a decent price.

[slim] Where to buy an IR Blaster?

2005-11-09 Thread Dave Edwards

I am looking to buy an IR Blaster for my SB2. I was expecting to find it
as an accessory here but it isn't listed:
https://secure.slimdevices.com/order/upgrades.cgi

Could someone please post some information of how to obtain one (I live
in the UK).

I'm sorry if this is answered elsewhere in the forum - I have done a
quick search and can't find any specific information.

Thanks,

Dave

The most recent "official" release can always be found at:

http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html

You can use the "maintenance" release get small, safe bug fixes added
since the last "offical" release at:

http://www.slimdevices.com/dev_nightly.html

To find out what version you are currenlty running open the web
interface (http://localhost:9000) click on "Server Settings" and look
at the bottom of the left hand frame. It will show the version and
buid numbers.

As for installing, I personally always just install over the previous
install. I've never had a problem even when moving from one generation
to the next (4.x -> 5.x -> 6.x).

I'll have to let someone else answer for the Running As Service
question.

Allmost all of the current skins are already available in the standard
release of SlimSever. You can choose which one to display by selecting
it from the drop down list found in "Server Settings -> Interface ->
Web Interface"

There generally are not versions of skins. As Slimserver changes, the
skins get reworked. If the author of a skin does not maintain it, it
gets dropped. Any skin that is listed should work.

Any new skins that have yet to be included in the Slimserver release
can be found in the wiki:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?PluginSkins

> How do I update to the new version?

The current firmware release and version history is always included in
the Slimserver release notes. They are always available from:

http://www.slimdevices.com/su_changelog.html

To find out what version your player currently has install, go to the
Web Interface and select "Player Settings" for the plyer in question
and look at the bottom of the left frame.

As for what version you need, that is determined by what version of
Slimserver you have installed. Slimserver knows what firmware version
is required, and will prompt to do an automatic update if one is
required. All that will be required of you is to confirm the upgrade
by pressing and holding down the brightness button to start it.

There is lots of documentation installed as part of the slimserver
itself. Not the most organized, but there is a lot.

Third question first. On your local slimserver, click
on "Server settings" on the left side of the default
skin. Down at the bottom is the version.

Second question next, because most people talk to the
slimserver through a browser. So if you click
on help-> about you are much more likely to get
the version of IE or Firefox or Mozilla or
whatver browser you are using, and you want
the version of the server.

The "latest" version changes all the time,
the latest stable one is 6.2.1,
which is the one that the main SlimDevices
page points to.

> How do I update to the new version (uninstall first, or just install
> over the top of my current?)

The answer depends on your OS and level of paranoia.
I'm a Linux guy, and I'm pretty (or maybe very) paranoid.
So I first make a copy of all the important files,
including copying the whole slimserver tree.

Then I install the latest one using the OS-specific
install packager. And try it. Some number of months
later, I clean up unused copies.

> How do I get it to run as a service?

You'll need a Windows guy for that one.

Most of them are bundled with the release. You don't have to do any
installation of them. You can just use them.

On your slimserver:9000 page, go to
Server Settings -> interface -> Web Interface
and pick one out of the selection list.

I don't know how the skins are versioned, someone else can chime
in with that answer.

Home -> Player Settings at the bottom will have your current
setting. If you have more than one SqueezeBox, they may be different.

The firmware revision history is included somewhere in the normal
distribution, but I haven't had need to look for it in so long I
don't remember where.

Again, the firmware is bundled with the normal distribution,
and the server knows which firmware it matches. It normally
is completely automatic, except for holding down your
brightness button.

[slim] Aaargh - no documentation! How do I...

2005-11-09 Thread jhd

I'm a squeezebox owner, and reasonably happy with it. However, any time
I want to change anything, I end up pulling my hair out searching the
slimdevices site, the wiki, the help file the bug list, and Google for
any fragments or clues about stuff that ought to be obvious. If anyone
can point me to any of the following, I'll be grateful. And if I've
just been blind and missed an obvious source of information, my
appologies. As an I side, I did submit a documentation bug (#1720)
five months ago - it's still pending I believe.

Here are some things I'd like to know and can't seem to find:

Slimserver:
What is the most recent, stable release of Slimserver? Or just the
most recent release?
How do I find out what version I have? (Why isn’t the version number
in “Help/About” like in every other software package?)
How do I update to the new version (uninstall first, or just install
over the top of my current?)
How do I get it to run as a service?

Slimserver Skins
Where can I find a list of the skins available for Slimserver?
How can I find out whether a skin has changed since I installed it?
How do I know which version of a skin I have?
Where can I download them? (I know I tried a bunch of them once – now
I can’t find them)
How do I install them?

Squeezebox
What is the most recent version of the firmware for my Squeezebox?
Where is the firmware version history?
How do I find out what version I have installed?
How do I know which version I should have given my version of
Slimserver?
How do I update to the new version?

Thanks,
J

I like this idea very much, especially since I agree, browsing by album
title is kind of useless as is. That this also fixes browsing by artwork
(so that the artwork will then show up sorted by artist, rather than by
album name) is another plus.

Is there a good tool on Windows that will let me do this? (Heck, I run
Cygnus, so even a Unix tool might be OK.)

Ideally I'd like to automate this so that the tag would get populated as
a post-tagging step based on the values of ARTIST, ALBUM and YEAR. I
swear by Tag&Rename, but it doesn't look like it can handle this tag.
(I'll send some email to the developer, though, and request it.)

Thanks.

[slim] Softsqueeze noritake display mode

2005-11-09 Thread Chris Laplante
It seems noritake mode was removed from Softsqueeze 2.x. Any way to
get that display type restored, or is there some command line switch
to turn it back on? The binaries still seem to contain references to
it.

Graphics mode is more CPU intensive, and is making the difference
between whether or not I can enable elapsed time or not on a lower
powered CPU. It runs fine otherwise, and this was the case with the
1.x version as well.

Thanks,

unit from being unobtrusive and neutral like the low profile of the

Sometimes the simple black slimp3/sb/sb2 case design is desirable...

The sb3 was rejected as a replacement for my old sb near the tv for
this reason.

Both of these are available in the hardware comparison chart on the

If you would like to see what the platnum SB2 looked like there is a

In the version I have, that just takes you to the "Now Playing" window.
That window uses tages, but the Library window itself does not use
tags.

The list on the left side of the Library refers solely to directory
names, and unless a song's filename tips you off, there's no way to
know the title of a song unless you add it to the playing window.

Am I missing something?

Okay, sounds like I just need a crossover cable. I'll be thrilled if
this works. It will be like icing on the cake.

Yup, 600 ft. The signal strength is between 65 and 70 % It wouldn't
work with the stock antenna, however. I had to buy a directional
antenna for my router - which it turned out didn't have a removable
antenna, so I just stuck it on the SB2 instead. Voila, streaming
music. It probably helps that our office is 2x4 walls w/ no insulation
and minimal siding, that there is nothing in the 600 ft except for grass
and a few trees, and that our trailer is, well, a trailer, without much
to impede the signal.

Thanks.

[slim] Re: bridging option

2005-11-09 Thread seanadams

You need to connect a _crossover_ cable between SB2 and the PC. Then
press and hold power to reset SB2, and as you walk through setup it
should ask if you want to enable bridging. That's all you need to do -
just set up the PC normally as if it were on the main LAN.

600 feet? Wow, that's pretty good range. Anyway, yes you can use the SB2

Re: [slim] bridging option

2005-11-09 Thread Michael Herger

Since the SB2 is 'connected' with this wireless router, can I use the
SB2 as a bridge between the notebook and the DSL router. I've read
that the SB2 has a bridging option, but can figure out if this is the
same thing or something different. (and I can seem to turn the
bridging option on anyway).

Connect your computer to the SB2 using a crossover cable. Start the SB2
and when it asks to set up the networking, do it. You'll have the option
to turn bridging on.

[slim] Re: Lossy vs lossless formats - total newbie question

2005-11-09 Thread skyrush

I am a recent convert as well, and I am starting to re-rip my CDs (I had
not yet ripped my entire collection anyway) in FLAC. It's nice at least
knowing they are stored lossless.

As for the compression setting, don't worry too much. Think of it this
way: you could always run a script over your collection later (handy
also if FLAC compression is improved) that would re-compress all the
music. Since it's lossless, there'd be no problem with doing this as
many times as you like! I just use the default (-5), which is fast
(and I tested -8, and that didn't shrink the file much).

For your tags, I saw some good suggestions here for Windows. I use
Linux, and I have written several Python and bash scripts to deal with
fixing tags, etc. (for example, one converts my iTunes .m4a files to
FLAC, preserving the tags). What I would do is once you get a parallel
directory structure with FLACs and MP3s, write a script (I'd use Python)
to extract the tags from the corresponding MP3 file and set the tags on
the FLAC file.

Remember that with FLAC, you need to remove the particular tag first (I
use --remove-tag= --set-tag==), or setting it
will make a duplicate tag with a the new value (and better not to have
old invalid tags in the file). Let me know if you want some example
code that will extract or set MP3 or FLAC tags using Python.

Indeed, the library feature of Moose currently does its own scanning.
It's seriously quick though as it only looks at filenames and folders,
not tags. Scanning my collection with Moose over a network takes
about 3mins. For slimserver to do a rescan it takes well over 3.5hrs
and is pretty unusable during this time.. If you add new music to the
server, you should only need to do a Moose rescan to see and use it..

But, as mentioned elsewhere, the whole project is a work in progress,
and scanning the database is one of the two big features that still
needs implementing (playlist management being the other).

[slim] bridging option

2005-11-09 Thread scott_m

Currently I live in a trailer aprox 600 feet from our Nursery office.
We have the computer and internet in the office, but not in the
trailer. I've managed to get the SB2 (set up in the trailer) to
connect wirelessly w/ the office computer and can stream music from
that hard drive. This is cool. The question I have is, I have a
notebook computer which I'd love to be able use to access the web from
the trailer. The dsl and wireless router is located in the office.

Thanks in advance,

Scott.

2005-11-09 Thread Mike Anderson

Well I tried out Moose, and it's great for a free program but:

1) The library doesn't deal with tags, and instead simply organizes
things by directories (which doesn't work well unless you use a
predictable band/album/song hierarchy and the filenames include the
song titles);

and

2) Unless I'm missing something, there's no way to save a playlist from
within Moose.

Obviously it's free so I can't complain that it isn't good enough for
me, but that's not quite what I was talking about above.

I do like the slider feature though!

One interesting variation on this that I've read about is to put a
NAS or NAS RAID inside a fire-resistant gun safe. A lot of them have
electrical outlets inside, and you can actually use an ethernet
powerline adapter to access the device while it is running inside the
safe.

Granted, it's not going to survive a full-on fire torture test like
it would (hopefully) do inside a media safe (not that you couldn't
overcook one of those, too), but it's a lot more protection than most
people have short of an offsite backup. And you can access the
information live on your own LAN.

Alternatively, you could look into something like the Schwab
DataFortress or the ioSafe.

Hi Max

This should be possible with a 'special' IR file that only consists of
one 'on' and 'one' off time (i.e. one bit). However the signal is
always modulated with about 38kHz which means on the output you get a
couple of pulses.
The other problem you get with this approach is that SB and amp can get
out of sync since you don't know if it's a 'power on' or a 'power off'
IR signal unless you also decode the signal.

this bands Amazon.com reviews before the whole event unfolded, how many

many "owners" the CD has finally found who've had their review to give.
At least it reflects something positive about Amazon.com, where they
respect you have the right to review a product and use up their
bandwith/diskspace without havig to buy it from them.

What this does for the band I won't know...could there be a certain
sympathy element? Can they sue their record company for lost sales?
Would they have had any sales anyway?

It all repends on how long a vision you have for your backup.
For a really long term view, you have to periodically put the
data into a modern format, and then write it out to whatever
looks to be forward looking.

Fifteen years ago, I backed up my critical stuff on QIC 40MB tape.
Then 1 GB DAT tapes came out, so I used them.
Then a few years later, 4GB DAT tapes, then a few years after that DLT.
You have to expect that the physical media will deteriorate over
time. More importantly, the drives become obsolete.

If you have 8 inch floppies, I am not sure that anyone can read them.
Even 5-1/4" floppies have been unreadable in my house.

Hard disks are probably useful for 3 to 5 years, if the data
is valuable, you really have to move to new drives periodically.
Its an engineering and budget question, more so than technology.

The only reliable long term storage is permanent ink on acid free paper.
That can last a thousand years or so.

Remember that modern hard drives are designed to be run all the time.
Spinning anything mechanical up and down actually does more damage than
leaving it on all the time. Thus a hard drive will be more reliable if
left on all the time.

As far as storage, I too use an external hard drive encloser and a big
hard disk. As mentioned $100 for 300gb and $25 for a decent USB 2.0
enclosure. Then I use SyncBack (but any decent backup program will do)
to run weekly backups of my music to my enclosure.

If something truly terrible happens: fire, theft, "act of god" then at
least you still have your original CDs which you could re-rip. They are
the ultimate backup.

I would definitely consider doing a listening test between the EAC and
Creative rips also (perhaps rip the same CD that was ripped by Creative
with EAC (I assume you're using Lame with EAC)) and see if you can hear
a difference. I have no idea what Creative uses to create its MP3s but
I'll bet its not that great of an MP3 encoder.

My suggestion for re-genring your collection is to re-organize your
directory structure by Genre (ie. make a diretory for Jazz and put all
your Jazz albums in it). Once you've got that done, then it should be
simple with (say) Mp3Tag to add genres to all your stuff. Then, if you
don't like the genre directories, put it all back the way you want.

Just a thought,

ss.

many of them, I'm an even bigger fan. I also know that they are capable

There are pros and cons of joining the windows-only or mac-only camps. There
are pros and cons of sticking with cross-platform and open-source. It seems
clear that SD is committed to both, and I respect that.

You want a sexier UI, I can understand that. It is recognised as a
weak point,

and is part of the roadmap for 6.5. I imagine copying iTunes would border on
legal problems. Slimserver is not (at least to my knowledge) intended to be a
portal (like iTunes) but a multi-platform common access for managing the
hardware. All the other bells and whistles (java player, web plugins) are a
bonus.

If you take a look at http://bugs.slimdevices.com, you will see some UI
enhancements already entered (and many already implemented if you look at
resolved ones). Taking part in improving that would be great. The more, the
merrier. I would hope that it can stay away from the topic of how to actually
run the business.

I have people who come over and want to play DJ at a party, make

You can do it with the remote, but with a large music collection, it is
vastly more preferable to do it on the computer, where the user can

playlist.

Don't even get me started about the multitude of different JRE versions
out there and which apps do and don't run on different ones. I
currently have to switch between several different Java versions to get
certain apps to work.

While I realize that this is the fault of the programmers who created
the applications that won't run on newer JRE versions it's still
extremely irritating for end users that have to put up with this
"feature" of Java, and let's face it, apps and their authors do die and
stop getting supported.

It's very cool that Slimdevices has done this, but if I were an
investor I'd want the company to give some special attention to the
enormous market of Windows and Mac users (primarily the former).

I've had numerous people walk into my living room and flip out over the
Squeezebox; one guy called it the coolest thing he's seen since the
iPod (which is exactly what I said). But then they encounter the web
browser interface and they're kind of let down. People are getting
used to the iTunes format, and anything that isn't that easy to use is
going to be a big stumbling block for the average Joe.

I'm assuming Slimdevices wants to sell lots of boxes, not simply corner
a small niche market. To do so, they're going to have to come up with a
sexier front end. It's what the average user expects these days. Doing
this doesn't necessarily mean abandoning the web browser interface,
just accommodating the Windows/Mac crowd with something more user
friendly.

As for the practicability or programming ease of such an approach, I
guess I'm ignorant about that. (I've done lots of programming, but
it's all number-crunching, not GUI building). If somebody tells me
it's prohibitively difficult, I'll believe them, but there are plenty
of programs out there that do it already (iTunes, Winamp, J. River
Media, etc).

[slim] Re: Lossy vs lossless formats - total newbie question

2005-11-09 Thread jmpage2

The biggest advantage of switching to FLAC over MP3 would be the
introduction of gapless (no silence) between tracks, which MP3 does not
support natively (hardware can work around this to an extent).

The difference in audio quality between FLAC and a well encoded MP3
file (done using LAME VBR presets) is actually quite minimal, even on
quality systems. Folks that would notice the most would be those that
listen at high volumes in dedicated listening mode or with high end
gear (really good headphones, etc).

While I hear the difference between the two, I could not reliably
pick between them at normal listening volumes.

2005-11-09 Thread MrC

While I was writing "actually, keyboard or mouse activity" I knew I was
going to get called on my brevity, but didn't feel like filling in the
rest.

It should have included "terminal services logins". Waking up a
machine and expecting it to catch the 2 minute window would not be very
reliable.

Bank tellers don't do anything w/their sysystem, but their admins
configure the domain servers or Netware servers/logins and this
controls the teller's systems. These types of environments have login
scripts, where updates, patches, etc. are run upon terminal service
login. User's typically won't remain logged on in such environments,
and typically don't have priv's to update their systems. So the login
required to do the admin updates are domain or server controlled and
privileged.

Its all much more complicated than this; I was trying to simplify.

[slim] Can you search for items in a playlist?

2005-11-09 Thread Matt E. Alioto
Hi
I was wondering if there is a way to, or if there
are plans to allow for searching of playlist items in a playlist.
I have a playlist of real audio streams that will
be approaching 600 items and it would be nice to be able to search by DJ's,
dates of shows or more to the point by any string in the items
description.
The entries look like this.

   #EXTINF:-1,Jesper Dahlbäck Saturday,
May 31, 2003
   #EXTINF:-1,Metrologic, 370, Pole,
Picadub Thursday, September 25, 2003
   #EXTINF:-1,Urbs & Cutex Saturday,
September 13, 2003

I'd like to be able to search for "Cutex" or
"September 13"
and return all matching items in the
list.

I'm not sure what the implications are for
searching playlists since normally(with local files) playlist items would be in
your library.  Possibly a search playlist option that only searchs playlist
items.

If anyone has any feedback, suggestion ect.. it
would be appreciated.  Is it worthy of a feature request?

I also received mine yesterday. You're right, the screen is 800 pixels
wide but they're very small pixels. The screen is only 90mm (3.54")
wide, so it could really use a dedicated skin with larger fonts. As a
comparison, my LCD monitor has just over twice as many pixels but it's
nearly five times wider. Maybe it's possible to increase the font size
in the handheld skin.

Isn't the screen 800 pixels wide? I would have thought one of the
standard skins would work fine in that format.

[slim] Re: Wake up slimserver (Wake-on LAN) through wireless network

2005-11-09 Thread MrC

It is my understanding that there are two different behaviors with
Windows and what seems to be collectively called "sleep" here.

1) For automatic shutdown/sleep/hibernate modes, the Windows Power
Options controls the behavior.

2) Once the system is asleep, no matter how it got there, there is a 2
minute window to provide direct user input, or input via terminal
services to log in. This allows admins to log in, do their thing, and
have the system follow (1) above. If no log in occurs (actually,
keyboard or mouse activity), the system goes back to the state it was
in (sleep/hibernate) irrespective of (1).

If this is already clear to all, sorry for covering old ground.

2005-11-09 Thread interspectrum

Ok, I think whatever you guys did fixed the problem. I updated the
software this morning and for the last several hours the memory usage
has not moved. It is at 60,147K. I can live with that. Before, the
usage would have climed to 70-90K in this time frame.

I will check again after it does its scheduled scan tonight.

[slim] Re: Philosophical Banter

2005-11-09 Thread MrC

I was actually trying to suggest that we each take responsibility for
trying to recognize when we're tending to migrate from the posters main
point/question, and volunteer a move to a new appropriately titled
thread (perhaps in General). There are a number of lists which embrace
this ideal.

I posted this in the General list/forum, but it was actually intended
for diverging discussions mostly in the other lists (didn't want to
cross / multiple post).

[slim] Re: Options for remote power on of non ir amp

2005-11-09 Thread fcm4711

Hi all

Here is an idea to (mis-)use IR blaster output to trigger a relay.
One could code a plugin sending out an IR signal constantly while SB2/3
is turned on. A little logic (timer) hooked up to the IR blaster output
detects the signal and turns the relay on for a couple of seconds. If
more IR signals arrive within time the relay stays on. As soon as the
SB2/3 is turned off no more IR signals are sent and thus the relay
turns off some seconds later.

Is there a known race condition or a known way that could happen under
certain conditions? It was about 30 degrees F here when I turned it on
- could the colder temperature affect this?

-Thanks, Joe

Nope... I've only ever seen that during development while I was
initially getting the display interface to work.

[slim] Certain MP3s will not play (hang at start)

2005-11-09 Thread skyrush

I have a particular album on which none of the songs will play on my
real SB2. The display continues to show zero elapsed time. The songs
will play on SoftSqueeze and xmms. I looked at the tags, and they look
normal. I have looked in the slimserver log, and I do not see anything
particularly interesting, but then I am new at deciphering logs,
however, the things I would see when playing a properly working song do
not appear. I've included a bit below in case it helps.

Also, how would I debug this, especially if it's something going on in
firmware? Or is it better to send one of the songs in question to
someone who could see what is happening?

-Thanks, Joe
