I can't get scan library to recognize all my songs. This became evident
when I couldn't find any of my 16 Beatles CDs although they are all
tagged. I don't know what else is missing. I do have a large
collection, over 35,000 songs but I've been reading that this is not a
 problem other than potential slowness.

I've tried using 6.2, 6.2.2 and 6.5 and get the same results. When I
re-scan, eventually Slimserver shuts down while the browser continues
to tell me that it is still scanning my library.

If I go to Browse Music Folder, I can see the missing albums and songs
and play them. Once I play an otherwise missing song, It will appear in
 the library.

 Can anyone suggest a work-around?

[slim] SB3 and Linkstation - my dream almost realised

2005-12-23 Thread jonathan

My SB3 - without doubt my best purchase for years, with possible
exception of my seemingly dated IPod which gathers dust as I no longer
live in Central London.

What an all-round pleasure the SB3 is proving, albeit my family
concerned with my obsessional transportation of armloads of CDs out of
the living room (as for all those broken bits of plastic casing...)

And strangely I'm leaving my PC on 24 hours, Slimserver ticking away on
the impossibility that someone other than myself grabs the new remote
downstairs. Strange because, when looking for a wi-fi music player, I
was determined for a solution which excludes my power-hungry PC.

Hence the Linkstation, still in its box. On reflection, not sure that
its cost outweighs the PC power bill, though it's another piece of kit
with another set of flashing lights to have on my flight deck, and I'd
enjoy migrating my recently re-ripped lossless files from the PC.

Except now I'm not so sure. I've read several reviews and followed
threads about using NAS devices and associated cumbersome installs,
poor performance, updates of Slimserver etc. And with never having used
Linux, the Slimserver install is daunting even with seven pages of
detailed instructions.

So do I proceed down my ideal power-saving Linkstation route, or do I
return it for a refund? My feeling is that I'll ultimately be
disappointed and relunctantly revert to using my power-hungry PC with
numerous trips upstairs to start-up and shut-down.

Any advice before the stores close for Christmas?

[slim] Re: SB3 hanging after song in Random Mix Mode

2005-12-23 Thread RichardG

Almost ready to file a bug report here..

First off, playing the same song that caused the SQB to enter the
endless playing state at various positions in the playlist had no
impact. flac -t on the file showed 100% correct.

I tried the pause test as suggested in the previous post. I tested on
windows XP SP2 with the source 6.2.1 package and a SQB 2. I played a
track. I waited for 20 seconds remaining (19 to be exact), and pressed
the pause button. I waited until the screensaver kicked in. I am using
the Now Playing sceen saver while playing, and None when not
playing.

After the screensaver kicked in, I waited another 60 seconds, and then
pressed the pause button again. The SQB 2 I was testing with
immediately lost its connection to the server and the screen went blank
after a few moments of displaying the lost connection notice. I checked
the server, and it said the player was playing. The web interface was
fully operational.

I am now going to do some limited debug checking to get a better view
of the environment when the SQB losses its connection, and to see if
eliminating the screen saver solves the poblem.

I believe we have what we need to file a bug report. Thanks to the OP
for his work on this.

If you were in your slim music folder when you entered the command then
you're fine. You should now have a symbolic link called Slim in that
directory. But if you were in some other directory then the symbolic
link was created right there. Remove the unwanted link with this
command: rm Slim
Create the symbolic link by either changing to your slim music
directory first and then entering the command ln -s /Volumes/ION/Slim
or by entering the following command anywhere in your directory tree:
ln -s /Volumes/ION/Slim path_to_your_music_folder (replace
path_to_your_music_folder with the actual path eg. /media/music/).

Enter ln --help to get the complete syntax of the ln command.

Replace localhost with the IP address of your SlimServer computer, and

[slim] Re: Wake up slimserver (Wake-on LAN) through wireless network

2005-12-23 Thread don_quay

I've just raised a bug sheet for this issue. Please vote for this...

Ethernet to wireless router, then wireless to SB2. XP settings on the
network
card set to allow PC to be woken by WOL packet, and Admin Only checkbox
also
checked.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Configure WOL on network card, as above. Set Power Saving settings
on the PC
to make the PC go into standby after 5 minutes (or whatever).
2. Put the computer into standby (either by automatically or manually
will
produce the same result).
3. Turn on the SB2. This will wake up the PC. Build a playlist (doesn't
matter
how - either using browse albums or random mix or whatever). Start
listening to
the music.

Actual Results:
After the pre-determined length of time set in Power Saving, the PC
goes back
to sleep. Once the buffer empties, the SB2 stops playing.

Expected Results:
The PC stays awake until the SB2 is turned off (by using the power
button on
the SB2 remote). Once the SB2 is turned off, the PC should then start
the
standby countdown as usual (dependant on whatever else is running on
it, of
course!). In other words, the SB2 should do something on the PC that
keeps it
awake.

P.S I love my Squeezebox. After Xmas I'll be loving BOTH of my
Squeezeboxes!
Happy Christmas, and keep up the good work!

[slim] Re: Native AAC Support

samlw Wrote:
 Hi,

Are there plans to add native AAC support to the Squeezebox? Not the
DRM version - just plain AAC. I bought my Squeezebox expecting to be
able to have a central music library accessible by both iTunes and the
Squeezebox via SlimServer. However, I want to store the music
uncompressed. So this rules out MP3, which seems to be the only common
denominator format between iTunes and SlimServer.

FLAC is not supported by iTunes. And AAC is not directly supported by
SlimServer. (And no, I don't want to install extra software modules
like LAME to convert my uncompressed music to high quality MP3!)

Why doesn't the Squeezebox simply support AAC in firmware? Is there a
licensing issue? The Roku SoundBridge products have such support as far
 as I can tell...

 Thanks,

 Sam

In response to this post, and other later posts by yourself, and
possibly others (if I got them mixed up), I'd like to say the
following:

1. AAC is not lossless (normally). Does even Apple support lossless
AAC?

2. My ultralight laptop, running at 500MHz, manages to transcode
224kbit AAC and route it via a 11Mbit/s wifi to the SB3, which is also
on the same wifi network. I can't imagine what underpowered server
can't manage the same? Are you perhaps transcoding to another lossy
format, rather than AIFF? Or is the server under load from spyware or
other demanding things?

3. Transcoding one lossless format to another must be even less
demanding than transcoding 224 kbit AAC like I'm doing.

4. Implementing some way of seeking through transcoded material would
be a good idea. Personally I would be happy with a way to move a marker
through a bar representing the song. (Like on the iPod). Being able to
actually hear anything while moving is almost useless anyway, I think
-and is what would be the hard part to implement, I believe.

Please excuse me if some of the things I have commented on were
actually related to other peoples postings!

Regards, and happy holidays!

I received my SB3 from advanced MP3 Players on Wednesday and it also
seems to have a fault with the display. It works perfectly for 20

Turning off with the remote, shows the time, but date is faint and
shimmers - eventually returning to full brightness. Turn the box on and
the top of the display vanishes again.
Power off and on at the mains won't cure the problem. Only when the
unit has been deprived of power for ½ hour or more is it working
properly (at least for 20 minutes!)

Also when the unit is operating I can’t listen to FM radio on the
connected HiFi due to interference and DAB isn’t too good either. I do
expect this from a wireless device but though I’d mention it.

I'm not sure what the correct syntax is. The line you were given

Look for it there, and move it into wherever your local SlimServer

NAS disks often have very weak processors - just enough to move files

[slim] Re: Elpac power supply for the SB2

2005-12-23 Thread TriodeGuy

Have to give Occam over at AudioCircle credit for finding this one.
It's a very nice 5V 3A supply made by power one for $2.50!

http://www.cascadesurplus.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/99/products_id/856

I purchased several of these and they are really nice supplies if you
don't mind doing a little DIY work. You have to solder a power cord on
and enclose it yourself.

Denon UDM-30 or UDM-31.
Just discovered these today - don't know how I've missed them for so
long. One of these would look great with an SB3 on top!
I don't like the look of the newest version(UDM-33) as much, but it
looks like there are still quite a few of the older units available.
Just thought I'd get this on here, for anybody else who has been
looking

now if i can figure out why the sb and slimserver are suddenly saying i
have no sb i might be able to use my sb

Sorry, false alarm (I think).

It appears that my neighbour changed her wireless channel this evening - must
have been the same time that I was installing the windows updates.

I've changed channel, and things seem to be back to normal (although my SBG had
some spurious pixels on and needed a hard reboot before it would work again).

OK, thanks for the info!
I wasn't aware of this, and in this case such machines are probably not
really suitable to run real server-side software such as Slimserver.
(Which has a working set of 35MB, and total usage of 55MB on my
XP-machine.)
Anyway, it would be unfair to demand or even expect that it works!

[slim] Noise at track change since FW update for 6.2.1 on SB2

2005-12-23 Thread jmpage2

I've just observed some rather nasty behavior from my SB2 which I've
only seen since recently upgrading to 6.2.1 and upgrading the firmware
on the SB2.

When switching tracks with albums that previously played fine I'm
getting a loud pop/click burst of static from the SB. This is with
44.1 khz LAME VBR encoded MP3 files. The files play fine on all of my
other devices.

I'm utilizing the analog output stage from my SB2.

Anyone have any info on this issue?

[slim] Confused about how to configure album artwork

2005-12-23 Thread AdamC

Hi!

I am using SlimServer v6.1.1 on WinXP. I would like SS to display album
artwork. I keep my artwork files in a single directory named:

D:\Gallery\Pictures\Album Covers\

According to the help text: there is an option in Server Settings,
Additional, Interface for setting filenames for Artwork, Artwork
Thumbnail, and for setting a central location for artwork files.

I can see the settings for Artwork and Artwork Thumbnail, but I'm
unable to find a setting for central location (and entering the full
path in the two aforementioned textboxes seems to prevent SS from using
variables in the filename).

Please would someone help me to understand how to configure SS to use
album art with filenames of the form ALBUM - ARTIST in the
above-named directory.

Thanks for any help,

Adam

Yes, but as I understand the original post, the idea was that the SB
would send a WOL packet every 115 (sat) seconds while it was on. It
does sound a good idea for an option (an option only, as Macs don't
seem to need it) if it is practical.
