Re: [slim] Can't connect via PocketPC - newbie question

I dropped back to a IE browser and used http://10.0.1.5:9000/Handheld/
(10.0.1.5 is address of server)and recieved page not found.
The server is a Windows/XP Media Center system.
Maybe some app like MCE is using port 9000? I re-installed Slim Server
and no help.

What about Windows' firewall? Did you follow

PowerDsine do a range of splitters for use with a range of 'legacy'

Not sure about compatibility with that Netgear switch or whether you
would need to solder a new plug onto any of them to fit a SB.

Pandora == Yahoo! or Ask Jeeves, Last.FM == Google or AltaVista.
(Technology-wise, I'm not trying to say that they're backed or owned or
anything.) Two different approaches to the same problem.

I'd like to see what Pandora's classification system thinks of what I'm
listening to right now :)

Great press coverage, though I'll personally be sticking with Last.fm as
it does a better job of matching my taste
(http://www.last.fm/user/Stinkingpig/). I also like that I pay when I use
it instead of paying for the year up front. Still, I'll keep an eye on
Pandora, as the author's thesis makes sense, and I could see their service
improving at some point.

Congrats on the NYT writeup! Nice article and it should drive immediate
sales. If you don't watch out the Squeezebox could become the new iPod
- then you'll all be billionaires, end up buying Disney and have no
time to hang on the forums!

Pandora is a great feature, too. Adding thousands of SB users will
help them continue to fine-tune their service. As far as a "buy this
CD" feature, it'd be simple for Pandora to send a reminder to your
email or squeezenetwork account. I could even see a future where you
could set up your Pandora account to automatically ship the CD from
Amazon.

Best of luck with sales and I can't wait to try Pandora through the SB.

This was a major code upgrade to get ready for the Pandora service,
which we expect to have out by the end of the month.

The firmware upgrade on SN was a bug that we fixed.

The upgrade is our first step to rolling out Pandora on SqueezeNetwork.

The firmware update was accidental - it's fixed now.

seanadams Wrote:

I guess it depends on the details of the Pandora protocol, and which
bits are secret (and at this point I'm 100% guessing). I'm assuming
it's a single, persistent stream into which the tracks are played -
much like the stream.mp3 you can get from slimserver. In that case, the
SB connects to the Pandora server via your slimserver just like with a
normal streaming station. When you need to login, choose channels, or
interact in some way (I assume this is the secret bit) the plugin sends
a request to the SN server, which talks over the secure channel to the
Pandora server, which changes what you're listening to.

Another option is to put the secret stuff in a binary and ship that
with a regular plugin acting as a wrapper - similar to the way closed
drivers are sometimes shipped for Linux.

And yet another way (which is what was mentioned earlier) is for a
firmware change to allow the SB to transparently switch from local
slimserver to the SN server when you select Pandora.

I'd be happy with any of those options, and in the last case would be
happy to open up the SBs to the outside world (the other cases wouldn't
need that as the local slimserver proxies for them) - I'm not that
fussy. I guess I just see a firmware change like that being pretty big
and maybe not so fast to happen...whereas plugin stuff tends to move
pretty quick.

I guess my main point was that the current situation of having to log
out of one server and into another would mean that practically speaking
I'd probably rarely use it - which would be a shame. I know it sounds
lazy but I've had enough troubles getting SBs to connect that I like to
leave them alone once they're working :)

Radish, I agree that having to switch modes to use one or the other is
inelegant. However I think the architecture is sound, and we just need
some higher-level polish to make it feel right...

Firstly, congrats on the NYT mention, and I hope you have warned UPS to
send more trucks :)

The Pandora stuff is interesting. I'm listening now through the flash
player and it's not bad - took almost 10 goes before I found a song or
artist it had heard of but once I got suitably mainstream it was OK.
The only thing that concerns me is that it needs SN, I can understand
why, but although I'm an avid SD fan I don't even have an SN account -
switching servers is a pain and my SBs live on a private subnet with no
internet access. I'd be prepared to let them see the outside world, but
the transition from my local server to SN has to be seamless.

Can't you just create a regular server plugin with a closed source
component to handle the secret bits (native compiled)? Or have a plugin
which talks directly to the SN server and has it do the secret stuff?
Gotta be a way around this :)

I probably would have ordered 1 SB2 and 1 SB3 if I could have gotten
them for $200 each. The 100off2 promotion only applied to the SB3; I
also didn't need the wireless capability and the only new SB2s are
wireless. eBay was a thought, but then the single SB3 would've cost me
$50 more.

It's not a huge deal. I'll try living with it, and if I decide to
change it, I'm sure it will cost a lot less than $50.

And you're not the one who can change their protocols, I know...

If they're streaming mp3's, then really, the only 'gotcha' is the
authentication method. It would be nice (for them, though admittedly
it would give less of a lead to Slimdevices) to have it something like
the last.fm or xm stuff: authenticate with http somehow and that gives
you a magic-tokenized url.

Though there would be a neato side benefit to Slim this way...

Listen to track by Someone Odd, think, "you know, I like this song..."
and with a couple rightarrows ... hear similar stuff. No typing with
the remote, just some arrowing. (Ie, over in the tags and 'add to
favorites', throw in a 'find similar stuff' thing.)

(And the real killer app for something like Pandora or Last.fm... a "I
like this album, remind me to buy it when I get my ass off the couch"
button...)

That's something that would warm even the cold hearts at RIAA. :P

I'm quite new to the Mac (just received my iMac this very day, in

Not just any paint.. ideall you want vinyl dye. I think it's Krylon that
has their new stuff called "Fusion". It's designed for plastics. What it
and vinyl dye do are soak into the plastic to permanently color it.
Standard spray paint only sticks to the surface and can flake off. If
you do it, be sure to sand first so the paint catches better on the
first pass. Give yourself no less than two passes with a light sanding
between passes and a clear coat if you want the glossy look.

It's really simple. You'll add your pandora account in Squeezenetwork
settings, and then from the Squeezebox UI you'll see "Pandora Radio" at
the top level. Press right and choose to either view your stations or
create a new one by searching for artists or songs.

You can skip tracks and rate songs up or down, much the same as
Pandora's flash interface.

> Server based DRM support?

It's not DRM in the usual sense, but yes there are reasons why we
probably won't put this in SlimServer. Pandora uses standard mp3
streaming with no encryption, because (as i understand it) their deal
with the record companies makes them more like an internet radio
provider rather than a music store (really smart).

Point well taken. Among our longer-term goals is to make the
SqueezeNetwork vs SlimServer distinction irrelevant/invisible, so
you'll just get whatever you want to listen to without worrying about
where it's coming from.

Here's the link to the $699 deal at Fry's:
http://shop3.outpost.com/product/4633698#detailed

Here's the link to the manufaturer's web site:
http://www.anthologysolutions.com/products/

Apparent downsides - no gigabyte ethernet; IDE (Not SATA) drives not
hot swappable; NAS OS (some flavor of emedded linux) not yet GPL'd. It
does have an 8 port switch, however, and the company has promised on
it's forums that they will soon release the sourcecode for the NAS OS.
These devices can also be daisy chained together. I wonder how the
real-world speed difference in IDE vs SATA read/write times would play
out in otherwise similar NAS devices, and if gigabyte ethernet would
make that much of a speed difference for primarily audio (slimserving)
streaming/storage/delivery.

Anyone have any experience with the Yellow Box? According to the
(hardly comprehensive) smattering of reviews I've come across, these
Anthology devices seem to fall in quality between Buffalo and Infrant's
respective lines.

For the price they look pretty damned sweet, IMO and looks like a nice
match for a the Squeezebox owner seeking an affordable and reliable HABB
(Home Audio Bit Bucket).

Please share if you have an opinion one way or another on this product!

[slim] Shiny front panel

2006-02-08 Thread Pale Blue Ego

New SB3 works great (love the DTS capability), but it sure sticks out in
my all-black component rack. It even distracts from TV watching to some
extent.

I'll try living with it for a few weeks, but my first thought was to
get a can of flat black spray paint.

I like the look of the SB3, but it does stick out in some
installations. I wish there was a non-reflective interchangable panel,
and that may be something to consider for the next gen player.

Aesthetics matter to many people, and I'd hate to think Slim was losing
some sales because of this issue.

If I do paint the silver panel, I'll let you guys know how it turns
out.

None of the Squeezeboxen supports PoE.
Accoding to Netgear website the FS108P supplies PoE according to 802.3af
(48VDC) and
has auto-sensing for it, so you'd have to have some 802.3af compliant

Non-Latin characters in file names are supported if your Windows instance is
using another language entirely - such as Japanese. We've had reports of that
working. However, having non-latin file names in a latin (English, French,

This is not an issue on OS X or Unix/Linux platforms.

Sounds like the front end is looking for a file or registry entry. It's
not finding one or t'other, so Windows Installer is firing up a known
source for the file to restore it/reregister it. Just click the OK -
you won't get the full Office install, it'll just restore/fix what it
needs.

I've seen the 1st use of the VB runtime files trigger a Frontpage
install, and this is similar.

Of course, if you've never had office on your machine, then I'd be a
mite concerned.

Tried renaming the files to english name and it did not work either.
However, I went in to the properties of the file and change the title

that I would lose my ID3 Tag.

I do hope that slimdevices would start putting together a Chinese
language support for the slimserver as well as the squeeze box.

I am not going to change my mp3 files as I would lose info.

Can you please send one of the files with Chinese ID3 tags to dan | at |
slimdevices.com ?

This should work - we have a bunch of test files that do.

The thing that may not work is if the files have an old version of the ID3
tag that is craming Big5 or similar encoding into what is only an ISO-8859-1
space. Our Unicode code tries to guess, but it can only guess so well with
overlapping character sets unless the encoding is explicitly specified as in
ID3v2.4

Re: [slim] Re: Songbird Is Out

fairyliquidizer wrote:

AFAIK this is a _very early_ release from this project. Not sure
whether they're calling it alpha, beta or whatever, but I would not
expect a true release level of features or quality at this point.

That being said, I'm pretty excited about the project.

I use a lot of disconnected small tools to create, manage and play my
music library. These excel at the small tasks they are designed for,
but don't really have much in the way of aesthetics when it comes time
to sit back a enjoy what you've built. SlimServer is great, but like
many I have sometimes wanted the UI of a native app. Songbird looks to
have some potential in that department. And the world _really needs_ an
open alternative to iTunes and it's kin.

So, how could this work with the Squeezeboxes?

I'm pretty sure a SlimServer would still be in the mix. It drives the
SBs, implements the CLI, handles firmware updates, synchronization, and
provides an interface for web and the devices. Songbird would generate
the non-web user interface, do extra stuff like podcasts, and use some
sort of plug-in to communicate to the SS CLI.

The big question in my mind is which application owns the library
database. Does Songbird own it and provide linkage to SS (as with
iTunes today)? Or does SS own it and provide some sort of data layer
linkage that Songbird can use to drive its interfaces?

In any case, this app sure looks like a good candidate for a native app
that could drive the Squeezeboxes. It'll be interesting to watch it
mature and see what the community does with it.

I have full administrative rights to my account.

Please check the rights on the file: if slimserver is running as a
service, it's using the "SYSTEM" account (or whatever else you defined).
It therefore has to be readable for "everyone".

Again, perhaps I saved the file incorrectly?

Try to save it directly to disk using a right click on the link (instead
of copying/pasting).

[slim] Re: Could not Import songs with Chinese titiles in SLIMSERVERS 6.5

2006-02-08 Thread lkypeter

Tried renaming the files to english name and it did not work either.
However, I went in to the properties of the file and change the title
from chinese to english and it worked. However, this would also mean
that I would lose my ID3 Tag.

I do hope that slimdevices would start putting together a Chinese
language support for the slimserver as well as the squeeze box.

I am not going to change my mp3 files as I would lose info.

Thanks.

To return to the OP topic. I've never heard of this. Try a web

Is Microsoft Office Professional Edition actually installed on your
system? If it is, it sounds like you might want to try repairing that
installation. If it's not, you can try using the Microsoft Windows
Installer CleanUp Utility to clear out the cruft of its installer
that's been left behind. You can get that tool from

[slim] ExBowse3 German character problem

2006-02-08 Thread drhanso

Hello,

I'm using the ExBrowse3 skin with Safari in OSX.
If there are special characters in the song title (like a German
umlaut) then the title gets displayed correctly on the left half of the
browser window (where you select from playlists etc.) but not on the
right half (player side). No problem with Fishbone skin.
When using Firefox the right side is ok too in ExBrowse3, so I guess
the culprit is Safari.

With the Random Mix plug-in, you can already achieve this (if I've
understood things correctly). I've got a custom map set-up with
"press-and-hold" 7,8 or 9 for random tracks, albums or artists.

So, I hold down 8 to pick a random album. If Random Mix picks an album
I don't want to listen to, I just hold down 8 again and get another
one. Rinse & repeat until I've got something I want to listen to :)

[slim] Re: Audio dropouts during "Search Music" - Possible to increase buffering?

2006-02-08 Thread nico

Thanks for all those suggestions. So it seems like extending the level
of buffering (somehow) is not an option? (short of SB3 purchase of
course). That's good to know, I won't pursue that avenue any more.

Probably my next move is to try MySQL (I run this on my machine anyway
for other applications). Whether it gets rid of the gap I guess will
all depend on whether or not the code blocks when it submits the SQL
query to the server (hopefully it's async/non-blocking!), and/or, how
long it takes the server to process the query (relative to SQLLite).

Failing that, I guess I will switch to a high bitrate MP3 as you
suggested, at least until the search components are separated.

Regarding comment #5, about tweaking the OS, I have already spent a
little time optimizing this already. There is a write-up here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20865 Unfortunately,
despite these scheduler tweaks, I could not get rid of the droupouts
resulting from search queries.

Cheers,
Nico

So, what IS in the Artist tag? If its blank, Slimserver might be doing
its best to guess: see Server Settings / Formatting / Guess Tags

[slim] Re: Audio dropouts during "Search Music" - Possible to increase buffering?

2006-02-08 Thread ceejay

How to reduce dropouts?

1 - (simple but expensive) - upgrade to an SB3, as you already noted

2 - (a bit of a pain) - switch to using high bit rate MP3s... it is
claimed that 320kbit MP3 is pretty indistinguishable from lossless,
though this of course depends on the rest of your kit, and ears! You
could try a few, though.

3 - (worth a try) - switch to mySQL... treble's experience in the last
post is interesting, other people have reported improved performance.
Can't hurt to try it out.

4 - wait - longer term, the code is being separated into different
components which should mean that searching time doesn't interfere so
much with important stuff like playing music

5 - tweak the OS - I note you are running solaris, can you ensure that
slimserver has one of the CPUs to itself?

Ceejay.

[slim] Screensaver Functionality

2006-02-08 Thread saltydog4791

I don't know if this is possible or not. I have tried searching for the
answer but have come up empty.

Is there a way for the screensaver to go away on a track change and
then turn on again. I just love looking at the analog VU on my new
squeezebox 3 but I would love to know the name of the song when the
track changes, and then have it go back to the VU. Is that even
possible? It doesn't look like it but I want to make sure anyways.

Thanks to all the great people around here also. I am in love with my
