[slim] Brand New Squeezebox v3 switching off after 30 seconds
Hi, as you can see from the title I'm fairly new here. I just received my new Squeezebox v3 and installed Slimserver 6.2.2. OS is Windows 2003 SP1 with all hotfixes. The SB switches on fine and firmware upgrade takes place. After the reboot I have all menus and I can search for artists or albums or whatever. So far so good. When I finally press play on a song it runs for about 20-30 seconds when the unit switches off to the screensaver (clock date here) ... no more playback. I can switch the unit back on again but the same happens over and over. Could I have gotten a defective unit ? Are there any logs I could check? Thanks and sorry for being the newbie today ;-) Cheers -- candymanlux candymanlux's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5237 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23424 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Suggestion: Radio now playing display
When I'm listening to a radio station that transmits track-info, the display of my SB3 shows something like: NOW PLAYING (1 of 1) REM - Lotus When I'm listening to another stations (Dutch public radio), a WMA stream without track info, the display says: NOW PLAYING (1 of 1) mms://wm2.xs4all.nl/streamgate42 (scrolling annoyingly) IMO this is not very useful. In the case of radio streams the '(1 of 1)' contains no info at all. Couldn't that display line better be used to display the station title? Like this: NOW PLAYING: Kink FM Class-X REM - Lotus In the case of the WMA stream there is no station title of track info encoded in the stream (perhaps this is not possible with WMA). In such cases, couldn't the SB display the name of the playlist entry that was used to start the stream instead or in addition to the possible useless url? FWIW, jumping in at the end, I've just tried updating to 6.2.2 from 6.2.1 on my XP MCE server, got the same problem. Reverted to 6.2.1 after uninstalling, same problem. Rebooted routers didn't help. Reset holding the + key didn't seem to help. I'm now working again with 6.2.1, the only difference was that I normally manually enter the network details, final time I let them pick up via DHCP. I'm using an SB1 and 2 SB3s in the UK, and can vouch for many other installations! As far as ordering is concerned, you have a few options: Order from SlimDevices in the US - and specify in the order that you need UK spec. They will ship the appropriate country kit, including power supply, etc. This option appears cheaper at first, but don't forget that customs may sting you with VAT and import duty. Also, you will have to ship the devices back to the US for any warranty issues. Order from one of the many UK based resellers: I've used http://www.multitask-computing.co.uk/ but there are many others: Try Googling Squeezebox UK. eBay... etc Chippy -- Chippy Chippy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=247 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23426 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Any issues I should know about before ordering a Squeezebox for use in London, UK? Does it pick up UK radio stations? Assuming I'll need an adaptor plug. Anything else? I think you'll find there's quite a few of us using them in the UK. You shouldn't have any problems. Not quite sure what you meant about the radio stations but just to clarify, it doesn't work as a FM/AM tuner, it can 'tune in' to radio broadcast over the internet. The only restriction then is whether your favourite station has an internet stream and the format it is in. A lot of people use a plugin called AlienBBC to help use the BBC radio stations with the Squeezebox. If you buy from a UK dealer you won't need an adaptor plug. I've always used www.multitask-computing.co.uk and found them very helpful. Other retailers include www.advancedmp3players.co.uk and www.cooltopia.com and even www.dabs.com. Hope this helps. May not be anything to do with the Media Center edition... there has been an issue from time to time that people have installed 6.2.x and found, as you have, that on starting it just hangs. The fix has been simply to reinstall. You may find that reinstalling 6.2.2 works for you. The slightly more drastic version is to delete everything in the slimserver folder first, though you'd probably want to keep a copy of the slimserver.pref file as well as any plugins you've downloaded. One thing not touched on here is x.5 revisions usually denote a more significant or a halfway to x.0 step up that is bigger leap than a .1 revision. Richard, Out of the box, the SB will support internet radio stations streaming in Windows medai format. Will a little extra work, you can also get it to playback radio stations using the Real media streaming format. For some reason the BBC stream most of it's stations using Real, but 5 live is available in Windows media format. Slim operate an on-line favourites system that you can connect to with your PC off, and it already has a number of London based stations stored on it. [slim] Re: France Vs Apple
A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22423 Question: France Vs Apple - Apple are right - The French are right - Both are wrong, I have a better solution (explain) - What's France? I believe that Apple are wrong in this case. Personally I've no real interest in buying iTunes/ipod, but what does concern me is that this monopoly will eventually cause the demise of physical music stores/CD's and then I have bugger all choice but to give in. Apple will never license their Fairplay DRM to third parties because the bulk of their income comes from selling iPod's not the songs themselves. You could argue that the loss of iPod sales could be offset by the licensing fees to third parties, but Apple tried that with MacOS and got burned. Thet won't repeat that mistake. However, the fact that it happens to be the French taking a stand against an American company is not entirely surprising. If Apple were a large French company, we probably wouldn't hear a word from them. However the French do have a history of protecting their culture and having lived in the U.S. for some time, where town after town consists of strip malls fast food joints, you have to say that it's something worth protecting. BTW - please do not take my statement above as a personal attack on the U.S/Americans. I loved my time over there. It's just a pity that franchises seem to have turned every town into a spooky clone of every other town. -- oreillymj oreillymj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=699 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22423 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Kyle, you mensioned 0.x vs x.0 This happens a lot on Open Source Software where they have an open source code repositry where you can get the bleeding edge version any time you want, but the official releases are 0.x+1. Most of the time the developers considder their software to be in a constant state of rapid development so don't want to decrare the software as 1.0 For example MythTV is sitting at 0.19 right now. This isn't 0.1.9, more like the 19th set of compiled binaries we consider a release version. In theory when they get to 0.99 it could go to 1.0 or just continue to 0.100. there are no hard and fast rules for this sort of thing :) But what KDF and JJZolx said is more relevant to Slimserver development -- funkstar funkstar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23422 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Sorry if this has been answered before but I haven't been able to find it. What is the best way to upgrade the Slim Server software? Do I uninstall the old version and the install the new version? [slim] Crazy device MAC address - two days old and no longer working
I got my squeezebox two days ago and it was great -- for one. :-( It will no longer connect to the wireless network. I've reset all the settings several times. When I was looking through the current settings I happened to notice that the MAC address was very very odd looking. It was something like FF FD FE 00 00 00. This doesn't look like a valid MAC address to me. And I recall seeing what looked like a more normal one when scrolling through the settings when it was working. Sometime during all of this (when it was still working), I did upgrade to the latest firmware. Not sure if that's relevant or not. Help! [slim] Re: Problem with Slim server - refuse to start
Usually, ethernet cables are wired to go between a device and a router or switch or between a computer port and a switch (or router). To go directly from a computer port to a device without a router or switch in between requires, in theory, a different wiring of the cable. This cable configuration is usually called a cross-over cable (because of the way the wiring diagram for them isn't straightforward but 2 pairs of wires are crossed over each other). It may be unrelated to your problem but in theory the setup you describe requires a cross-over cable. At least it would in older hardware. Some newer hardware is able to sense when a computer is wired directly to a device (or equivalently, when a cross-over cable is used and not needed). If it worked before and you changed nothing hardware wise, not the cable, not the port, etc, then this is probably a red herring. -- Michaelwagner Michaelwagner's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23414 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

You had 2 main problems, the DHCP one and the PushSelf one. For the DHCP, you could assign a static IP for now. On your little subnet of just your computer and your SB, it shouldn't be complex. Do you have 2 network cards in this PC? For the other problem, you'll need to file a bug report, as per my directions before. The pushself call is a coding error in Slimserver, and a developer will have to look at it and fix it. They sometimes troll here, sometimes not. rcb Wrote: I've just got a (wireless) SB3, and was following the thread re improvements when using a linear power supply to replace the stock switching power supply. Folks have recommended the Elpac WM075-1950-760... so I tried that model, but, given the results, I'm willing to wager that the SB3 sometimes needs 2amps, while the SB2 made do with less...Bottom line, I haven't gotten the Elpac to work. The Elpac is rated at 1.5 amps. When it's connected to the SB3, for me, the display flickers and is dim... and the rest goes downhill from there...(and yes, this SB3 has the latest firmware). same here-I don't remember where I got the link I bought from but I got an Elpac WM075-1950 (no D5 or 1760 or anyhting else after that) and it just doesn't seem to have enough power to run the SB3 even though it's rated at +5VDC 1.5A guess I'll have to get something else... -- robertwb70 robertwb70's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4823 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=16245 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: 6.2.2 playlist problem
I had a similar issue. This is on 6.2.2, MacOS X 10.3.9, and iTunes 4.7.1. Initially, I had zero songs shown in my library. I had to disable 'use iTunes' under server settings, and manually select my iTunes music folder. That got all my music back, but with empty playlists. So I then renabled 'use iTunes' and my music was still there. I then went under the iTunes page of Server Settings and did several things. For some reason the music library XML location and the music folder were set (correctly, though), so I blanked those settings out. I then set my iTunes refresh time to 1 second. I opened up iTunes and changed one playlist. I finally did a 'only rescan playlists' from the server settings page. That got all my playlists repopulated. I switched my refresh time back and that was that. I'm not sure which of those things actually did the trick, but it's been working fine ever since. -- Ben Ben's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=54 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23442 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

By Slimsoft I presume you mean SoftSqueeze. I had similar symptoms on a Linux installation and I deleted the preferences file. On Windows the preferences are kept in the Windows Registry - I don't know the top key but the bottom is something like Javasoft/Prefs/com/Slim/SoftSqueeze I think delete the SoftSqueeze branch to reset the prefs. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23436 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Who was it that said, When you point a finger, three are pointing back at you.? All this network stuff can be daunting and confusing for some (many) people. Personally, I find the activity of stand-arounders kicking and shaming a man when's he's down to be extremely distasteful, counter productive and shows a lack of bawls. Whoops! Are three fingers pointing back at me? No. I'm pointing all four fingers and a thumb straight out saving the other hand for backup. -- curly curly's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5100 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23389 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: 6.2.2. OK now! This is fun! NOT!
Tony really just wants to play music. I'm glad he got it working with a great show of the unprecedented quality of support you get with Slim Devices systems. There are two kinds of support in this world, the kind you pay for and the kind you don't. The support he paid for (from SD) was excellent, looks like they got him right back up and running. They offered to call him, or email him, or whatever he wanted. I see nothing other than sheer professionalism from the offical SD folks on this thread. Above and beyond anything I get in a professional environment for products costing hundreds of times more. The free support, on the other hand, well that you have to play a little differently. If you expect other people to help you out of the goodness of their hearts (and by posting on a forum that's EXACTLY what you're asking for) then you have to be prepared to be nice, polite and to TRY WHAT PEOPLE SUGGEST. If you want to be rude, arrogant and vent, and choose to do so in public, then you deserve what you get. This forum is not a service, it's not a right, it's a COMMUNITY. Play by the rules and act nice, and you'll be rewarded in many ways with insight and excellent advice. If you want to play tough guy and throw your toys out of the crib, well that's what call centers are for. They're paid to put up with you. -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23389 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: PSP 2.6 with Qnap Slim Server
If my understanding of the QNAP is right, the reason you can use the 'name' of the box from a Windows system is because of Samba (ie, Windows-compatible filesharing stuff). Part of SMB is the name service. (Ie, this is how the old 'Network Neighborhood' thingie worked on Windows: the machines broadcast their name.) The PSP doesn't support SMB names, so you will have to use the IP. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23351 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Synchronization of Soft Squeeze 2.3 with Slim Server 6.2.2
Glad to see the Tony Muffin fiasco was resolved. So all he had to do was re-boot his router? So much heat on that one with such a simple fix. What a shame.. Anyway, I upgraded to 6.2.2, and it was painless. Two things in 6.2.2 caught my eye. One was the release notes say there is an improvement for people using Actiontech routers. THAT'S ME! Every now and then, (NOT very often) slimserver would just stop on my system, so now I will see if this now longer happens. The second thing was a claim of improvement of synch with SoftSqueeze. Trying it now and Softsqueeze is still LEADING my SqueezeBox by about a second. Is there any hope for me? P.S. No anger here. I just would love to be able to synch up Softsqueeze with SqueezeBox -- Zten Zten's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1810 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23460 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Radish, That's one of the best put posts on the topic I've ever seen. [slim] Re: Squeezebox and ogg Vorbis?
washburn Wrote: It seems sort of iffy to say that the Squeezebox supports ogg when it really offers only partial support of ogg. I was pretty disappointed to find that that I can't fast forward through any of my music. I hope that squeezebox or somebody offers native support eventually. There are a few of us ogg users out here! And it would be nice for the slim folks to support a format that's open source and technically excellent. Maybe ogg support is impossible/impractical, but I promise that if it happened, it would make a some of us out here very happy! When I purchased my first Squeezebox about 16 months ago, I myself was happy to find a product like it that dealt with Ogg in any manner; not many do. Since then, I've decided to work on phasing Ogg out of my library. Ogg is impressive and sounds much better to me than MP3 at any given bitrate, but nothing lossy is ever going to beat something lossless for sound quality. Storage is cheap and only getting cheaper. For those reasons, I'm transitioning to FLAC (and I hope ripping all my stuff for the last damned time). I think that SD saw these trends as well, which is why I think they went for native FLAC support and have native Ogg support way down on the priority list. I love Ogg as much as the next slashdot reading geek, but I fear that its chances for mass acceptance may have passed. -- eq72521 eq72521's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1512 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18357 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: PSP 2.6 with Qnap Slim Server
one thing to try...i set up a new connection on my psp because i couldn't get it to see the slimserver even though google etc was working. the last option when you set it up is to start the internet browser automatically when your psp sees the connection. this needs a yes for my psp to access the server and it works fine. my existing connection didn't have this and it was the only thing i changed. hope this helps. -- pfd pfd's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5259 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23351 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: SB2 as wireless bridge
Guys, thanks for the help. I had to ignore the problem for over a week - was tied up with work. But now finally I have it working as I wanted to. There were several things working against me, but I attacked them one by one. My first crossover cable was busted. Then my D-Link router did not initially want to issue an IP address to any device bridged over the SB2 (the logs gave this message, which I assumed to be a uPnP or Rendezvous associated thing). Packet Dropped Target IP(239.255.255.250), Target Port(1900) Spoof IP(192.168.0.109), Spoof Port(2048) Spoof Attack fromd MAC(SB2_MAC_ADDRESS) Detect However after ignoring it for a while, it seemed to give IP addressed to both the devices that I had connected to it; the wonderful SlingBox from SlingMedia and my newly aquired Sonos ZP-80 zone player. Am currently doing a side by side comparison of the ZP80 with the SB2 - will report on that in a separate thread.
