Still, changing px values works. Anyone who doesn't like the font sizes and positions should try to play with them to make them fit their needs. As it is, the reason I maintain the 'alternate styles' is for the purpose of illustrating just how easy it can be to alter fonts and colours in order to make a skin into your own preference. With 6.5, it is even easier. You can create a skin that can inherit everything from another existing skin, changing only the elements you add. This means you can inherit from Default, and just make a skin.css for some font adjustments and you can set your skin, get all the graphics, but have your font sizes and layout. anyone interested should check out the wiki for the topic "skin development" and you'll get the details. Okay, well I have been looking at this for some time and was wondering if true zone control ala Sonos works on the Squeezebox or Transporter? The zone flexiblity of the Sonos box is pretty impressive and would be the only reason to not get a Squeezbox. The controller while impressive is a closed platform and you can use a PDA with it with 3rd party web interface. And they have introduced some UPnP control as wel. I really like the digital function of the Transporter as I will be using digital media players in a couple locations and I could connect them to the squeezbox using digital in port. I concur. The 6.5.0 (and 6.5.1) are very buggy. 6.3.1 was pretty stable in comparison. It recognized all my music 27k+, and was not a resource hog like the 6.5.n. With 6.5.n some music is not recognized, over 1/2 albums missing, server crashes when viewing some album art, etc. I decided to do a clean install back down to 6.3.1 and the problems went away. I think if there were some rewards for the betas testers, then Slim would have more people testing the betas and squelch a lot more of the problems before the release is made official. I got pulled into the beta temptation when I first got my Squeezebox and it took a LOT of time to troubleshoot, report bugs, install frequent updates, and so on. These days, I wait for the official announcement and then try to wait a few more days (or weeks) while watching the forum here to try to get a feel for what the issues are. Even so, I had problems when I finally got brave enough to try 6.5 about a week or so after the official announcement. Brian: Your situation sounds something like a problem I had recently. I had one album that SlimServer was showing with odd info, and it really had me stumped for a while. I removed and rewrote the tags multiple times with Media Center, but SS still had it wrong. Then I downloaded mp3tag and it was showing the correct info same as Media Center. But then I went poking around in mp3tag options and noticed it is set NOT to show APE tags in mp3 files. I toggled the option to have it show APE tags for MP3s, and sure enough, there was all the same odd info that SlimServer was showing. So apparently SlimServer prefers APE tags to ID3 in MP3 files. I removed the APE tags with mp3tag, rewrote ID3 tags with Media Center, and then everything was hunky dory in my next SlimServer scan. It may be that MediaMonkey and DBPowerAMP maintain their own database and aren't showing the tag changes that you do in other programs. If so, there should be a command in there somewhere to make it re-read from the tags and update its database. -- MeSue Sue PS: I once wanted a Squeezebox boombox, but I don't anymore. ;-) MeSue's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=985 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27848 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: 6.5 Unstable and Bugs
I am afraid I have to agree with Les. I have been using 6.3.0 since it came out and always intended to "watch" what happens to 6.5 - it is disappointing to see the number of issues that have appeared. I am sure someone will jump on here and say "everything is fine with me" (mr bflatmajor..!), but the bottom line is that there are issues (6.5.1 is due way too soon after 6.5.0). This is not SlimD or opensource bashing - I love the squeezebox and ss and will continue to use it. To illustrate, I am still using MM from Jan 06 (v1.5d) and a version of cataloging software (collectorz.com) from the early summer -> both of these software packages have had relatively big upgrades which have caused problems. I have not upgraded because a) my system works 99.99% of the time and b)"if it ain't broke don't fix it"... So 2 points 1. Slim have (had?) the opportunity to 'package' the server into a friendly bundle with InstallShield-like utilities that can make install, upgrade and general usage (e.g. plugins) much easier. This would probably lighten the load on Slim support and make tech adoption more easier. 2. Should we also have a bit of review of the roadmap to release new features that people will actually want to use (the fishbone gallery is cool I am sure but do I really NEED it?) It would be good to hear others opinion on this - some constructive views, especially from Slim, would be good. I suspect the 6.5 experience will not want to be repeated by Slim or its customers so now is the time to set the direction? [slim] 6.5 Unstable and Bugs
I have had to reload 6.5 once already when I changed skins on the Browser and it became unusable. The scanner appears to abort part way through the database build and has missed many of my artist/albums. This is quite scary because 6.5 is a major release and clearly it has not been properly checked before release. The problem is that once you upgrade you can't go back to the previous version very easily (if at all). Don't get me wrong I am a very strong advocate of this technology it is absolutely top drawer stuff and I would not for a minute slate it, but clearly this release has flaws that have gotten through the release process. Am I right in thinking that the Database has been updated in this release? This is quite serious for Slim Devices for a new novice user getting their first experience of the technology and lots of the functionality (some of it very basic) not working may put them off which spreads quickly. This must be resolved fast. I think I will be using the save as option from now on to keep old versions because this is not funny at all. -- Les Les's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5990 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28070 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Thanks for the speedy reply. This is probably the answer to some of the people on this forum experiencing artwork problems with WMA files. I have no idea why this is the case but I do know that when opening those albums from within the gallery view, wma.pm is throwing an exception when trying to get the embedded art. Quoting luga00 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: Can someone at Slim please confirm that the gallery view only uses artwork found in the library folder of an album (ie folder.jpg) if it doesn't manage to find any cover art embedded in the tags of any of the album tracks? That's correct. Anything found in tags will override anything found in the folders. This seems to be the case looking at the debug log after a clear and rescan. If this is true then it will help me track down why only a few of my albums aren't showing artwork for no apparent reason. There was a problem with some tag reading in 6.5.0. You can try out the latest nightly and run a rescan to see if this fixes your issues with artwork tags as well. -kdf ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

There are two issues but they may be interconnected. Can you get radio on SoftSqueeze on the same PC as Slimserver ? You should also put into the exclusion list socketwrapper.exe and mplayer.exe. After an upgrade some users have found it necessary on some security s/w/ to delete the old entries and make new entries as the Security s/w remembered the old files as being authorised and not the new ones with the same name. A log with d_source and d_directstream enabled would provide more information about what is going on when radio is being selected. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28062 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: internet radio - flaky software?
One difference in streaming between past versions and 6.5 is that now (in most cases) the stream is run directly to the squeezebox from the remote server - bypassing the slimserver entirely. This is the same approach as Squeezenetwork has always taken. In previous versions, the slimserver acted as a proxy in the process. What this means is that the squeezeboxes must have access to the internet, including correctly set DNS and gateway entries, which previously weren't needed unless you were using Squeezenetwork. From the error message, I think this is the case with you. If you're using static IPs make sure the gateway and DNS settings match those on your PC, if you're using DHCP we'd need to investigate why they're not being set properly. This doesn't apply to AlienBBC of course, as the stream needs to go through the server for transcoding in this case. I think you have two seperate issues - (a) AlienBBC just isn't working for some reason and (b) your squeezebox can't see the outside world, so regular radio doesn't work. A sidenote - I've seen several users mystified as to why their streaming radio has suddenly stopped working in 6.5, but it was only by accident that I found out about the change in protocol. To me this is a pretty significant change, as it will cause failures on previously working setups based soley on network topology. I think it would be good to see the change advertised a little more widely. -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28062 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hi bpa No radio at all!!! when I select slim picks the little 'wait' ring goes round and round and all buttons on the remote don't function with the exception of the volume. It locks up, and the only button that seems to work is 'search' which takes the system back to the top menu. All the alien channels just go to sleep after the connecting message on the squeezebox. I'm using xp pro(sp2) and Norton AV(2005). Its a new mobo(ASUS) with a pentium d(2.8 dual core). The alien test streams ok. As I say, the only sniff of a clue is the slimserver diagnostic which shows the message 'no dns server responding - check network config'but I havnt changed anything between 6.2.2 and 6.5 except between every reconfig I have to put slim in the norton exclusions list otherwise the firewall stops the internet access. You can import tags manually, the problem is to keep them there. Slimserver will clear/modify the tags during scanning and also when using the "Browse Music Folder" menu browse your music. Lame and wmadec launch at start of track and both drop after 45-60 sec when network traffic drops from around 500K to background (9K6) as per above observation. The indicated network rate of 500K at start of track implies that bitrate limit is not actually happening. Internet Radio Streams mp3 128K converted to 64K as displayed on SB3 screen. No evidence of lame being launched at stream start; therefore conclude that the bitrate conversion is not happening. Because of buffering, it is impossible to measure the actual server output bit rate. Debug log indicates that although conversion is attempted it gives up and goes to direct mode. aac+ 32K will not run when bitrate limit set. No evidence of lame starting. wma 128K converted to 64K as displayed on SB3 screen. Lame and wmadec launched. Buffering took a long time (2mins) and when eventually loaded, the output was white noise. CPU usage 100%. Debug log attached wma 128K No limit SB3 built-in wma deselected. Network rate 1.5Mb/s - output OK. wma 128K converted to 320K as displayed on SB3 screen - SB3 built-in wma deselected. Lame and wmadec running output OK. Network rate limited to 320K. Working as it should but CPU usage is 100% - mainly lame. Conclude that an indication of conversion on the SB3 screen does not reflect the reality of any conversion or limit. The player connects directly to internet streams on any built-in protocol, and once a stream is playing, slimserver can be stopped and the music will continue for as long as the stream stays up - the information on the SB3 display is of course lost. Re: [slim] Slimserver 'not seeing' random files...limitations?
I have a similar problem; it seems to be something to do with MP3 tagging - but I have no idea why. It doesn't like The Pretenders, claiming that the songs had No Artist, No Title and No Genre (even when they did) - so I deleted the files and re-ripped them. Now they have Artist, Title and Genre tags, and SlimServer will search and find 'The Pretenders' and if I Browse to the Album in Browse Music Folder (usually a good way to force Slimserver to see an album) it will play it - BUT then it loses it on a rescan! and removes it from the list. I have no idea why... Neil "jonnypd" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > > Hi, > > I've just installed Slimserver and have been messing with it for a > couple of days. [slim] Re: AACPlus fails with 6.5.0
A status report as I wont be able to get back to this for a while 1. I think caching interferes with what is happening when changes are made - so sometimes a change is made but the cached value overrides the change. I found to get reproducible test results - clear database and cache between changes & runs. 2. In 6.5 more use of direct streams was made - whereby the SB talks to the source directly. The confusion seems to be AACplus looks like an MP3 direct stream. Without bit rate limit SS identifies it as a special format and processes correctly. With bit rate it sees the end result as MP3 so it tries to direct stream to SB - but just as SS starts the direct stream SS finds the stream is in AACPlus format and can't be handled directly by SB so it stops. Use d_directstream, d_source and d_remotestream to get an idea of what is happening. 3. I think bit rate limiting doesn't work for MP3 streams - when I enable a limit of 64k on a 96k stream - no lame process is set up and the 64 is ignored. The stream plays OK but it is not bit rate limited. This may be true of all direct stream formats - point 4 could test this. 4. I'd like to test bit rate limit on WMA but prefer to keep my SB on a 6.3.1 NAS so if you could test this it would be helpful. Check for a lame process when stream it running. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27996 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
