cool!

colours are easy, borders and positions, not too bad.
scaling...nope

as it is, each browser does css differently.
most are not so far off, but you always get stuck with EI, huge market
share and inability to play with others shoved wholesale up your
backside.
more fun, IE7 claims proper support all over again, yet breaks it in
all new ways.

Still, changing px values works. Anyone who doesn't like the font
sizes and positions should try to play with them to make them fit their
needs.
It only takes a browser refresh to make them take hold and you can take
a layout that you don't like, making it something you do like.

but, I agree it would be nifty to be able to make it happen.

As it is, the reason I maintain the 'alternate styles' is for the
purpose of illustrating just how easy it can be
to alter fonts and colours in order to make a skin into your own
preference. With 6.5, it is even easier. You can create a skin that
can inherit everything from another existing skin, changing only the
elements you add. This means you can inherit from Default, and just
make a skin.css for some font adjustments and you can set your skin,
get all the graphics, but have your font sizes and layout.

anyone interested should check out the wiki for the topic "skin
development" and you'll get the details. Post to devel forum if you
have questions.

[slim] Zone control on Squeezebox or Transporter?

2006-09-29 Thread tdampier

Okay, well I have been looking at this for some time and was wondering
if true zone control ala Sonos works on the Squeezebox or Transporter?

The zone flexiblity of the Sonos box is pretty impressive and would be
the only reason to not get a Squeezbox. The controller while
impressive is a closed platform and you can use a PDA with it with 3rd
party web interface. And they have introduced some UPnP control as
wel.

I really like the digital function of the Transporter as I will be
using digital media players in a couple locations and I could connect
them to the squeezbox using digital in port. No possible on current ZP
systems :(

2006-09-29 Thread Greg Erskine

I'm only a recent SlimServer/Squeezebox user but have already
upgraded/downgraded SlimServer a few times looking for the one that
suits me.

v6.2.2 - OK, downloaded to test with SoftQueeze before purchase of
Squeezebox
v6.3.1 - OK, upgraded when I purchased
v6.5b3 - didn't like it, so downgraded
v6.3.1 - OK, until I got over 65 Albums then all albums listed under No
Album
v6.5.0 - buggy, so downgraded
v6.3.1 - put up with this, until
v6.5 v2006-09-28 - GREAT for me, very happy now.

Did I report my issues? Well no. Being new to this, I wasn't sure if I
was doing things wrong with ripping, tagging, directory structure and
naming conventions.

I'm using Windows XP, and have found the SlimServer install/uninstall
process quick and easy, and works 100% of the time. The automatic
update of the SqueezeBox code to suit the version of SlimServer is
brillant.

It seems to me that the SlimServer code underwent a bit of a
restructure with 6.5 plus (a big plus) the release of the Transporter
(that required 6.5 on 18 Sept) may have contributed to some of the
issues reported. Bring on 6.5.1

I concur. The 6.5.0 (and 6.5.1) are very buggy. 6.3.1 was pretty stable
in comparison. It recognized all my music 27k+, and was not a resource
hog like the 6.5.n. With 6.5.n some music is not recognized, over 1/2
albums missing, server crashes when viewing some album art, etc. I
decided to do a clean install back down to 6.3.1 and the problems went
away. I had to retype the long WAP key though when downgrading. It
seems that 6.5 was rushed in order to meet the deadline for the release
of the Transporter.

[slim] SB2 keeps losing connection to server

2006-09-29 Thread hal9000

I'm running Linux 6.3.1 and my SB2's have firmware 55 installed.
Everything worked fine for months until last night when, after a
clear/rescan of my library and reboot of my music server (which I have
done a few times over the past months with no issues), the SB2 plays
about 30 seconds of a song...loses connection to the server...and then
starts playing the next track on the album. All of my SB2's are hard
wired in to my home network.

Any ideas what might be the problem? I thought I might be having a
problem with my network but I can stream the same flac files off of the
server from another computer on the network no problem.

thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Just speculating, but maybe with 18000 songs in the library you need
more ram. Did previous releases work in the same machine with the

2006-09-29 Thread MeSue

I think if there were some rewards for the betas testers, then Slim
would have more people testing the betas and squelch a lot more of the
problems before the release is made official.

I got pulled into the beta temptation when I first got my Squeezebox
and it took a LOT of time to troubleshoot, report bugs, install
frequent updates, and so on. These days, I wait for the official
announcement and then try to wait a few more days (or weeks) while
watching the forum here to try to get a feel for what the issues are.

Even so, I had problems when I finally got brave enough to try 6.5
about a week or so after the official announcement. That said, Slim
Devices and Dan Dully in particular really made an effort to help me,
and once I filed a bug with a sample file exhibiting the problem, they
had a fix to me in less than 24 hours.

[slim] Re: Tag problems with 6.5.0

2006-09-29 Thread MeSue

Brian: Your situation sounds something like a problem I had recently.

I had one album that SlimServer was showing with odd info, and it
really had me stumped for a while. I removed and rewrote the tags
multiple times with Media Center, but SS still had it wrong. Then I
downloaded mp3tag and it was showing the correct info — same as Media
Center.

But then I went poking around in mp3tag options and noticed it is set
NOT to show APE tags in mp3 files. I toggled the option to have it show
APE tags for MP3s, and sure enough, there was all the same odd info that
SlimServer was showing. So apparently SlimServer prefers APE tags to ID3
in MP3 files. I removed the APE tags with mp3tag, rewrote ID3 tags with
Media Center, and then everything was hunky dory in my next SlimServer
scan.

It may be that MediaMonkey and DBPowerAMP maintain their own database
and aren't showing the tag changes that you do in other programs. If
so, there should be a command in there somewhere to make it re-read
from the tags and update its database.

I am afraid I have to agree with Les.

I have been using 6.3.0 since it came out and always intended to
"watch" what happens to 6.5 - it is disappointing to see the number of
issues that have appeared. I am sure someone will jump on here and say
"everything is fine with me" (mr bflatmajor..!), but the bottom line is
that there are issues (6.5.1 is due way too soon after 6.5.0).

This is not SlimD or opensource bashing - I love the squeezebox and ss
and will continue to use it. To illustrate, I am still using MM from
Jan 06 (v1.5d) and a version of cataloging software (collectorz.com)
from the early summer -> both of these software packages have had
relatively big upgrades which have caused problems. I have not
upgraded because a) my system works 99.99% of the time and b)"if it
ain't broke don't fix it"...

So 2 points

1. Slim have (had?) the opportunity to 'package' the server into a
friendly bundle with InstallShield-like utilities that can make
install, upgrade and general usage (e.g. plugins) much easier. This
would probably lighten the load on Slim support and make tech adoption
more easier.

2. Should we also have a bit of review of the roadmap to release new
features that people will actually want to use (the fishbone gallery is
cool I am sure but do I really NEED it?)

It would be good to hear others opinion on this - some constructive
views, especially from Slim, would be good. I suspect the 6.5
experience will not want to be repeated by Slim or its customers so now
is the time to set the direction?

My 1 dollar...!

I've had the upgrade ever since it was officially released and have only
one issue. The random mode mix not updating the UI properly.

I have no problems with the wireless connectivity.
I have no problems listening to internet radio.
I have no problems streaming my flac files from pc to sb
My setup is just plain vanaila, no third party plugins or third party
skins.

So if you are having problems with third party stuff, is it really 6.5
at fault or the third party at fault.

Just my two cents.

[slim] 6.5 Unstable and Bugs

2006-09-29 Thread Les

I have had to reload 6.5 once already when I changed skins on the
Browser and it became unusable. The scanner appears to abort part way
through the database build and has missed many of my artist/albums.
This is quite scary because 6.5 is a major release and clearly it has
not been properly checked before release.

The problem is that once you upgrade you can't go back to the previous
version very easily (if at all).

Don't get me wrong I am a very strong advocate of this technology it is
absolutely top drawer stuff and I would not for a minute slate it, but
clearly this release has flaws that have gotten through the release
process. Am I right in thinking that the Database has been updated in
this release?

This is quite serious for Slim Devices for a new novice user getting
their first experience of the technology and lots of the functionality
(some of it very basic) not working may put them off which spreads
quickly. This must be resolved fast.

I think I will be using the save as option from now on to keep old
versions because this is not funny at all.

That's correct. Anything found in tags will override anything found

[slim] Re: internet radio - flaky software?

2006-09-29 Thread bpa

There are two issues but they may be interconnected.

Can you get radio on SoftSqueeze on the same PC as Slimserver ?

You should also put into the exclusion list socketwrapper.exe and
mplayer.exe. After an upgrade some users have found it necessary on
some security s/w/ to delete the old entries and make new entries as
the Security s/w remembered the old files as being authorised and not
the new ones with the same name.

A log with d_source and d_directstream enabled would provide more
information about what is going on when radio is being selected.

[slim] Re: internet radio - flaky software?

2006-09-29 Thread radish

One difference in streaming between past versions and 6.5 is that now
(in most cases) the stream is run directly to the squeezebox from the
remote server - bypassing the slimserver entirely. This is the same
approach as Squeezenetwork has always taken. In previous versions, the
slimserver acted as a proxy in the process.

What this means is that the squeezeboxes must have access to the
internet, including correctly set DNS and gateway entries, which
previously weren't needed unless you were using Squeezenetwork. From
the error message, I think this is the case with you. If you're using
static IPs make sure the gateway and DNS settings match those on your
PC, if you're using DHCP we'd need to investigate why they're not being
set properly.

This doesn't apply to AlienBBC of course, as the stream needs to go
through the server for transcoding in this case. I think you have two
seperate issues - (a) AlienBBC just isn't working for some reason and
(b) your squeezebox can't see the outside world, so regular radio
doesn't work.

A sidenote - I've seen several users mystified as to why their
streaming radio has suddenly stopped working in 6.5, but it was only by
accident that I found out about the change in protocol. To me this is a
pretty significant change, as it will cause failures on previously
working setups based soley on network topology. I think it would be
good to see the change advertised a little more widely.

Hi bpa

No radio at all!!!
when I select slim picks the little 'wait' ring goes round and round
and all buttons on the remote don't function with the exception of the
volume. It locks up, and the only button that seems to work is 'search'
which takes the system back to the top menu. All the alien channels just
go to sleep after the connecting message on the squeezebox.

I'm using xp pro(sp2) and Norton AV(2005). Its a new mobo(ASUS) with a
pentium d(2.8 dual core).
The alien test streams ok.

As I say, the only sniff of a clue is the slimserver diagnostic which
shows the message 'no dns server responding - check network
config'but I havnt changed anything between 6.2.2 and 6.5 except
between every reconfig I have to put slim in the norton exclusions list
otherwise the firewall stops the internet access.

I hope some of this makes sense.

More info would help debug problems - most AlienBBC problems are well
characterised and resolvable once the symptoms and system have been
described in detail.

When you say no internet radio with 6.5 - do you mean just AlienBBC or
all internate radio such as RadIO, Lives365, etc. ?

If it is just AlienBBC - have you tried both Live and "Listen Again" ?

What OS are you using ?

If you are using Windows - what security s/w. have you installed ?

What processor is in your system ?

Does mplayer work standalone with the 6.5 install ?

Ok, I'll see what happens them.

One thing I hadn't realised was that the cover art in the 'list' views is

Thanks for the input. After I posted the message, it occured to me that

Thanks; it's now moved from there, but there's a link to
http://music.predixis.com/freetools.html where it can be found (well,
today at least :-)). I tried the -test option on my Anouar Brahem
directory (I can re-rip if it eats anything), but it said something
like "0 of 14 files need fixing"; so it looks like it won't help.

Supplementary: I risked running it for real on the same directory, and
it said "Scanned 14 files in 0 sec / Fixed 0 files". So then I tried
-remove1, and it seems to have done just what it said... but looks like
there are still APE tags there, and dBPowerAMP still reports Artist as
"Anouar Brahem", which isn't too promising... and looking at the files
in SS via Browse Music Folder suggests that SS can no longer read any
tag info! It shows the "Anouar Brahem" etc. tags on first click, but if
I look again, there's nothing at all! Yet MediaMonkey definitely sees
"Brahem, Anouar", etc. Hmm.

Since the files looked OK in SlimServer 6.2.2, I wonder whether this
really does count as a bug, or if the newer SS is now doing something
the right way...

[slim] internet radio - flaky software?

2006-09-29 Thread swet

Hi all

Big problems with internet radio!!

I can run server 6.2.2 with alienbbc 1.03 but I want to upgrade to
obtain other european stations, particularly French.

I have tried unsuccessfully over the last few months to upgrade to
6.3.1 (alien 1.06-6.2). Every time I select internet radio on the
squeezebox slimserver stops.no error messages, just drops
out..I gave up with this after spending many, many hours of
upgrading and then regressing to 6.2.2got very weary with it!!

today I tried 6.5 with alien 1.06-6.5it seems to sound generally
crisper but...no radio at all this time slim doesnt drop out or
stop, it just wont connect. The only message in the diagnostic log is
something like 'no dns server responding' I have regressed once more to
6.2.2 where at least my alienbbc is working.

I can't seem to get any info from the bug reports and can't find any
similar posts.

Anybody got any ideas?

Regards

Ed

[slim] Missing ID tags in 6.5 but they are there in the music file

2006-09-29 Thread pechspilz

SlimServer doesn't recognize the artist, album AND genre tags on a lot
of my MP3 files. I'm using JRiver MediaCenter to import them into my
music collection and I never had an issue with ID tags with any other
software. Only the title tag is there but not the way it's stored in
the ID tag.

It looks like SlimServer is guessing the title tag from the filename
and ignores the ID tags completely.

Does anyone know what's going on here? Did I set a wrong setting
somewhere in SlimServer? I want it to use the ID tags of course.

I'm gradually transitioning over to all my music being in FLAC files
containing an entire CD (with embedded CUE sheet). It's these that I'm
primarily interested in, the rest will hopefully sort itself out as I
re-rip.

For multi-disc sets, I tend to put all the FLAC files in the same directory,
so I'd have:

FLAC/Various Artists/Compilation/Compilation (CD 1).flac
FLAC/Various Artists/Compilation/Compilation (CD 2).flac
FLAC/Various Artists/Compilation/cover.jpg

most of my music is:

FLAC/Artist/Album/Artist - Album.flac
FLAC/Artist/Album/cover.jpg

I'll try to run a re-scan with d_artwork set and see what it gives me.

I was after more 'general' advice than anything though. Should it 'work'
with just one cover.jpg for each album, or do I need a 'smaller' one for the
thumbnails on the browse pages?

Thanks

something like 300x300 or 500x500. This file shows up once I drill down all
the way into an album directory.

However, for some of my albums I don't get any cover art shown in the
'Browse Album' view of the default skin when I have it in 'Gallery View'

Can anyone tell me what I should be doing? Should I also have a smaller
dimension file for this view?

many things can happen. If you have tracks from teh same album in
different folders, various artists, etc. you can turn on d_artwork in
server settings->debugging and run a "clear library" scan to see what
is going on when teh server compiles the artwork cache. Gallery view
uses this cache, whereas browsing to an album of folder is able to
seek for artwork on the fly.

[slim] Re: can I import tags directly into mysql

2006-09-29 Thread erland

You can import tags manually, the problem is to keep them there.

Slimserver will clear/modify the tags during scanning and also when
using the "Browse Music Folder" menu browse your music.

There has been some discussions earlier that it would be a good idea to
make it possible to force slimserver to never touch the tags in the
database but I don't think it has been implemented yet.

I don't know anything specific about the slimserver db schema, but that
looks _very_ suspect. Something's certainly screwy, I'd raise a bug and
attach the log.

2006-09-29 Thread radish

What I would probably do is run the scanner to build the initial DB (the
scanner will guess tag values based on filenames for untagged files).
Then, using (I assume) the filename as a key, merge data in from your
external DB, overwriting the values generated by the scanner.

Re: [slim] 6.5 directory names error

2006-09-29 Thread kdf
This is a result of the "guesstags" feature, which is only used when
tags are not found by slimserver.
This is a known issue, that some tags get missed, and it is fixed in
the 6.5.1 nightly builds and will be for 6.5.1 release.

[slim] Re: AACPlus fails with 6.5.0

2006-09-29 Thread Ramage

Music files

File mp3 128K converted to 64K as displayed on SB3 screen. Lame
launches at start of track at 90% - 99% CPU usage, and stops after
45-60 secs . When lame stops, network traffic reduces to background
level from 500K, indicating that the track has been loaded into SB3
buffer. Slimserver can be stopped at this point and the track will
continue to play to its end.

File wma 97K converted to 64K as displayed on SB3 screen. Lame and
wmadec launch at start of track and both drop after 45-60 sec when
network traffic drops from around 500K to background (9K6) as per above
observation.

The indicated network rate of 500K at start of track implies that
bitrate limit is not actually happening.

Internet Radio Streams

mp3 128K converted to 64K as displayed on SB3 screen. No evidence of
lame being launched at stream start; therefore conclude that the
bitrate conversion is not happening. Because of buffering, it is
impossible to measure the actual server output bit rate. Debug log
indicates that although conversion is attempted it gives up and goes to
direct mode.

aac+ 32K will not run when bitrate limit set. No evidence of lame
starting.

wma 128K converted to 64K as displayed on SB3 screen. Lame and wmadec
launched. Buffering took a long time (2mins) and when eventually
loaded, the output was white noise. CPU usage 100%. Debug log
attached

wma 128K No limit SB3 built-in wma deselected. Network rate 1.5Mb/s -
output OK.

wma 128K converted to 320K as displayed on SB3 screen - SB3 built-in
wma deselected. Lame and wmadec running output OK. Network rate
limited to 320K. Working as it should but CPU usage is 100% - mainly
lame.

Conclude that an indication of conversion on the SB3 screen does not
reflect the reality of any conversion or limit.

The player connects directly to internet streams on any built-in
protocol, and once a stream is playing, slimserver can be stopped and
the music will continue for as long as the stream stays up - the
information on the SB3 display is of course lost.

Debugging.

Debugging logs using d_directstream and d_source for mp3 and wma
streams are attached.

However the music collection is all from same souce - located on home

Work PC only has about 2500 songs / 600 artists / 350 albums

directory is generally

c:/music/artist/album

if any album has artwork it is stored in album folder (although not all
have artwork)

Home PC same as above but for the fact that it is much larger

roughly 26,000 tracks / 4000 artists / 2500 albums

directory is held on an external HD

f:/ Music/genre/artist/album

I will also try to run the evnt viewer today on work pc so a

Re: [slim] Slimserver 'not seeing' random files...limitations?

2006-09-29 Thread Neil Cameron
I have a similar problem; it seems to be something to do with MP3 tagging -
but I have no idea why.
It doesn't like The Pretenders, claiming that the songs had No Artist, No
Title and No Genre (even when they did) - so I deleted the files and
re-ripped them. Now they have Artist, Title and Genre tags, and SlimServer
will search and find 'The Pretenders' and if I Browse to the Album in Browse
Music Folder (usually a good way to force Slimserver to see an album) it
will play it - BUT then it loses it on a rescan! and removes it from the
list. I have no idea why...

made - so sometimes a change is made but the cached value overrides the
change. I found to get reproducible test results - clear database and
cache between changes & runs.

2. In 6.5 more use of direct streams was made - whereby the SB talks to
the source directly. The confusion seems to be AACplus looks like an MP3
direct stream. Without bit rate limit SS identifies it as a special
format and processes correctly. With bit rate it sees the end result
as MP3 so it tries to direct stream to SB - but just as SS starts the
direct stream SS finds the stream is in AACPlus format and can't be
handled directly by SB so it stops. Use d_directstream, d_source and
d_remotestream to get an idea of what is happening.

3. I think bit rate limiting doesn't work for MP3 streams - when I
enable a limit of 64k on a 96k stream - no lame process is set up and
the 64 is ignored. The stream plays OK but it is not bit rate limited.
This may be true of all direct stream formats - point 4 could test
this.

4. I'd like to test bit rate limit on WMA but prefer to keep my SB on a
6.3.1 NAS so if you could test this it would be helpful. Check for a
lame process when stream it running.

[slim] 6.5 problems

2006-09-29 Thread michaelch

I'm running 6.5.1 - 10078 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252. If I go to slim
device picks I get this message.

There was an error loading the remote feed for Slim Devices Picks: (
not well-formed (invalid token) at line 1, column 6, byte 6 at
/PerlApp/XML/Parser.pm line 187 )

I get a similar message from Live Music Archive. Alien BBC and "tune
in url" work fine.
Has anyone any ideas?

Have you tried the deb package? I've had no problems using the .deb package from

My mistake, SS doesn't actually shut down when you 'Exit' from the task
bar.
Works great. Thanks for all your work on the plugin.

There's a known issue with the plugin's list not being updated
automatically. You'd have to restart the server or switch the language
back and forth to initialize it. Does this help?

Working fine for me, but check that you have the MM reload interval set
to 0 ? Then do a full clear and rescan. Don't try to initial a mix
until after the scan is finished as all the MM info is put in at the
end of the scan.

There was a problem with the scanning process which AFAIK, isn't
resolved. Will try and find the bug report.

[slim] Slimserver 'not seeing' random files...limitations?

2006-09-29 Thread jonnypd

Hi,

I've just installed Slimserver and have been messing with it for a
couple of days. I have a largeish collection of music, all in one
place, about 20,000 tracks which I manage with MediaMonkey.

Slimserver seems to be missing almost 4,000 of these tracks... and I
can see little logic it it's choice. Some whole albums are missing,
sometimes individual tracks from albums... there seems to be no
particular file type and my tagging is extremely rigorous and
consistant. I've activated all the different file types in the server
options, but no matter how many times I try to re-scan...no joy.

Anyone have an idea why this might be?

Cheers,

Jonnpd

[slim] can I import tags directly into mysql

2006-09-29 Thread rambham2

My library is stored as uncompressed wav files.
I would like to do a bulk import of the tag
info directly into mysql. Is there a supported
way to do this?

If not, what would be best way to do that? If
required I am willing to write perl/python/C
code that would be used to populate the db. I
just need some general ideas on where to start.

Thanks for any info.

The bug is well documented. It's real. If you have not noticed it, feel
lucky! It's there in the current release.
