[slim] Re: Full Scan Not Getting All Files

2006-10-15 Thread kyleki

It turns out the errors were due to some tags in my files. After
launching
slimserver with "--d_scan --d_paths --d_mp3 --d_info", I was able to
see the
file names that were causing the problem. The debug output was placed
in
the logfile on the server (/tmp/slimserver.log).

I cleared the id3 tags on the "bad" files and reset them using
'Zortam Mp3 Media Studio' (http://www.zortam.com/) (I just found this
online while trying to
fix my tags from my networked Windows box. Otherwise I would have
used
'EasyTag' (http://easytag.sourceforge.net/) in Linux).

I'm fairly new to utilizing debug flags and found the ones I listed to
at least get me the info I was looking for. Unfortunately, it took a
very
long time and generated a fairly large log file I had to wade through.
Does anyone know if there's a more efficient way to find these needles
in the haystack?

When I can go out and buy a 2 TB hard drive for $1-200 and I have

Yes, but barely. Your average wireless router is going to have a lot of
trouble keeping an HD stream going, but it is possible with the right
gear. I just spent the weekend on the SlimDevices stand at DigitalLife
and we had Ruckus Wireless with us showing their new 802.11 compatible
routers which are optimized for video streaming - we had an 18mbps HD
stream going all weekend with no glitches. That demo attracted a _lot_
of attention, and those who saw it know why ;)

[slim] Re: Transporter vs ??

2006-10-15 Thread Mark Lanctot

Some audiophiles do go by weight.

It can be an indicator of build quality - discrete components and metal
construction rather than integrated components and plastic construction
obviously weighs more, but as you noted, manufacturers can cheat.

In the case of a turntable though, I'd say it's probably there for
stability.

The Transporter is made from aluminum. Maybe they should have made it
out of depleted uranium? :-) There's no weight listed for the
Transporter. That could be good (no "faux audiophile" gimmicry of
listing it prominently when it really has nothing to do with the sound)
or it could be bad when competing against an 8 kg device.

I'd prefer to get something where the manufacturer isn't too concerned
about the weight and concentrates on the sound rather than specifically
engineering the product to be heavy, perhaps at the expense of something
that actually impacts the sound.

Interference can come from other sources (e.g. cordless phones,
microwaves) and not just other Wifi installations.

Low retransmit count is good but does not mean something else could be
happening.

You should give the Server health menu a try and see if it throws up
something such as a slow server (e.g. badly behaved plugin) .

Can you provide more details on the symptoms of the "trouble"

Since you have Max encoding to flac I'll assume you have the flac and
metaflac programs installed. Metaflac can calculate the replaygain
for flac files and add the tags. If you tell it to work on a group of
files it will assume those files are an album and will add album and
track gain tags at the same time. Sooo... assuming (hoping) you have
each album in it's own directory you can add replaygain tags by
changing into that directory in the terminal application and running
the command:

metaflac --add-replay-gain --preserve-modtime *.flac

I have a little script that will traverse into subdirectories and
process all the flac files. Copy the following into a file and make
it executable. The run it from the top level directory where all your
flac files are. It will apply replay gain to all the flac files in
all the subdirectories treating all files in a directory as an album.
It will recalculate and apply the values even if the files already
have RG tags so after the first run use it directly in an album
directory to process newly added albums.

#!/bin/bash
BASE="$PWD"
find "$PWD" -type d | while read dir ; do
cd "$dir"
if [ $(ls | grep "\.flac$" | wc -l) -gt 0 ]; then
echo "$(date "+%T") Processing: ${PWD#$BASE/}"

[slim] Re: Stuttering, and the File Types page

2006-10-15 Thread Triode

That doesn't look too bad, though it would be good to see with the stats
reset to 0 first.

If you get persitent readings over 0.5 seconds then this could cause
stuttering. In this case its worth enabling logging of events which
take over 0.5 seconds [go to bottom of page and put 0.5 in the High box
nxt to "Set All" and press "Set All". Leave running for a while whilst
playing and then look at the server log - does it show any warnings
about response times?

Alternative, itts possible you have something that causes short bursts
of wireless interference - so that nettest normally runs OK, but would
drop for a second during the interference. To see this start nettest
from the server web interface and look at the graph - do you see any
readings below 90% if left to run for an hour or so?

... and your response appeared when I posted my last!

I've been playing FLAC files for about 20 minutes now, with server
performance monitoring on. At the moment, the graph looks like this:

Server Response Time
The response time of the server - the time between successive calls to
select.
< 0.002 :82375 : 96%
###
< 0.005 : 2467 : 3% #

< 0.5 : 29 : 0%
< 1 :4 : 0%
< 5 :1 : 0%
>=5 :0 :  0%
max : 1.138204
min : 0.27
avg : 0.000847

(I forgot to reset the counters, so this probably includes figures from
during the network test as well; but I don't think they've been
monotonically decreasing since I started looking.)

No stuttering, even when I started doing other things on the PC
(transcoding, downloading). However, just as I returned downstairs, my
wife said that the SB display had gone blank! The current track was
still playing. I hit Now Playing on the remote, and the SB said it
couldn't connect. I've seen this before on power-on; I pressed left
(which showed me the IP address of the PC), then right, and it
connected OK. THe current track finished, and playback stopped instead
of going on to the next track. When I hit play, it started playing the
track that had just finished. Hit next, and all was well. *Then* I
started this message, and pasted the current server stats. Odd!

My system behaves exactly this way, after a clean install and rescan.
As another data point, the number of songs matches the count from

It might, if only I could see it for long enough! When I run any of the
Network tests, I get a very brief view of a page that includes an empty
graph, and then the main test page reloads on top of it!

Perhaps I should try it in a different theme (I'm using Fishbone)...
ah, no: it works OK in IE, but not in Firefox (damn!)

I've been running the 5000kbps test for several minutes now, and it's
averaging 99.6%, with a minimum of 82%. Of course, I don't know what
the figures would have been last night, when the stuttering was
happening. (I've not been playing flac files today, by chance.)

Now I know how to run the tests, I'll be ready to do them next time
stuttering starts.

Oh, and thanks for the explanation. Sounds like FLAC should be FLAC,

Uninstall/reinstall seems so drastic. But if you do, go in there and
delete the rest of the SlimServer directory after uninstall and before
you reinstall - it leaves items behind.

[slim] Re: Random play only plays 10 songs and stops...

2006-10-15 Thread ctviggen

Mark Lanctot;146223 Wrote:
> Have you set in Random Mix - Add new items when old ones finish?

I wonder if my installation is corrupted? When I go to Random Mix,
there is no option to add new items when old ones finish. Also, the
genres to include are all numbered and are not named. Further, where
it asks you to choose a random mix, it lists Random Albums, Songs and
Years, but there is no entry for Artists. There is additionally a
large space between the "Home / Random Mix" and "Choose a random
mix...", and it appears that something should be there that is not.

Would you recommend a complete uninstall followed by a reinstall?
Thank you for your help.

KDF wasn't saying that bug wouldn't fix syncing, he was saying that it
was a bit of a stretch to promise it for some future release when
no-one's started work on it yet.

[slim] Re: Stuttering, and the File Types page

2006-10-15 Thread radish

The network test plugin will give you an idea of what your usable
bandwidth is.

In terms of the conversion page, you are selecting which
formats/conversions are available for use. Which one is actually used
depends on the source file format and the type of player. Each player
has a preference order for formats (for SB3 I think it's FLAC, WAV,
WMA, OGG, MP3) - the server either sends the file as-is if that's
possible, or otherwise finds the transcoding path which ends up with
the highest preference file type. So streaming FLAC will always send
FLAC if you have "FLAC/FLAC (built-in)" selected.

Where "the same problem" is spending time working around a bug without
bothering to report it in the bug database so it has a chance of ever
getting fixed?

It's worth noting that while some related bugs have been fixed, no-one
seems to have actually reported the issue you folks keep complaining about:

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2874
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1217
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=242

A good rule of thumb is, if you ever find yourself wanting to ask about
the status of something on the mailing list, either refer to it by bug
number, or chastise yourself for not having filed a bug yet, file the
bug, and then refer to it by bug number. Speaking as a developer (though
not one that works on this product) it is orders of magnitude easier to
close duplicate and redundant bug reports than it is to track and fix
issues that aren't being reported in the bug system.

[slim] Re: Anit-Virus Problem: Kasperky Internet Security 6.0

2006-10-15 Thread oreillymj

Try the following. I'm assuming Slimserver has been installed in the
default location on your machine.

# Right-click Kaspersky AV icon in the system tray. In the shortcut
menu select Settings.
# Click Protection - Trusted Zone.
# Click the Exclusions Masks tab - Add. Make sure the Object option is
chek marked.
# By the Object name click Specify.
# Browse to the Outpost folder (by default C:\Program
Files\Slimserver\server) and check mark the option "Include
subfolders".
# By the Checking task click Selected.
The line should look like this:

The object will not be scanned if the following conditions are met:
Object name: C:\Program Files\Slimserver\server
Checking task: any task
# Save your settings by clicking OK 3 times.

[slim] Re: Happy SB2 - Wireless Signal Strength to Stream FLAC's ?

2006-10-15 Thread bpa

Try using Net test plugin to see if you can get about 2500kbps @100%.
This is a short burst test so interference won't show up.

The Server health may also highlight transmission vs other problems.

If you are using windows - another indicator of the quality of the
connection can be found with the TCP statistics - from a command
prompt window "netstat -p TCP -s". Unfortunately this is for all TCP
connections but high no. retransmits is one indicator of interference.

That's not the case for me unfortunately. I've just investigated one of
my problem albums, and the tracks do not have any embedded cover art.

The ony tags in these tracks are: ALBUM, ARTIST, DISCNUMBER, ENCODEDBY,
GENRE, TITLE, TRACK, YEAR

I don't use Itunesupdater, but the tracks were originaly ripped by
Itunes (v4.9.0.17)

[slim] Happy SB2 - Wireless Signal Strength to Stream FLAC's ?

2006-10-15 Thread Deaf Cat

Just wondering if I have something a miss as I'm sure I have read that
peoples SB's have worked with 30% or so signal strength.

Mine has trouble in the high 50's anything less and SB2 says I need
more signal to work...please!

Just wondering if 50-60% is a normal cut off for streaming FLAC's ?

(I've a G+ wireless router)

[slim] Anit-Virus Problem: Kasperky Internet Security 6.0

2006-10-15 Thread maxlamont

Hello,

after having read the forum I now found out that my anti virus program
seems to be the reason for all the problems I face recently with
SlimServer.

Unfortunately I can't find how to tell Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0
to leave SlimServer (and the MySQL stuff) do their thing without
bothering.

Kasperky support is very bad: They say they don't answer questions
about other companies programs. So does anyone of you use the same anti
virus program and can tell me how to solve my problem?

Thanks
Max

2006-10-15 Thread t081

I'm experiencing the same problem, see here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28668

I found that this issue is really related to embedded coverart, at
least the noise dissappears as soon as I remove the embedded coverart.
I also found, that the noise is longer with big cover art. Another
observation is, that files with coverart aren't played to their very
end.

[slim] Re: Mandriva 2007 and YAML::Syck

2006-10-15 Thread Lyndon

Thanks guys,

I have finished the music server using version 6.3.1. I will try to
test 6.5.0 on a different machine. To get 6.3.1 working with Mandriva
Free 2007.0 I only needed to install two extra packages:

perl-DBD-SQLite-1.12-3mdv2007.0
perl-CGI-3.16.1mdk

There seemed to be an issue with the versions however. Slim Server
-did not- work with the newer version 2.x of SQLite.

I used a mini-itx board in a SilverStone LC-19 case. It's a nice setup
as the board is fanless and virtually silent. Here is a photo.
