[slim] Re: TouchScreen Skin
I have a LocationFree LF-X11 touchscreen device. It works OK as a touchscreen remote using the default skin, but the size of the buttons on the touch skin look great and the skin seems ideal. However, I can't drill down (click on) anything any deeper than the large icons at the top level. All the text also seems to not have any links associated with it, so I can't click on the "More" link to get to the other buttons on the main page. [slim] Re: Open Source Dream Falls Apart?
I am an open source developer, and have been for ten years or more. Not on SlimServer, but on Info-Zip.org. I do this because: 1) I like seeing my ideas out there, and people enjoying what product I put out. 2) I truly enjoy coding - when I have the time - and it makes a good hobby that doesn't require a lot of money to maintain. 3) Most importantly, I am giving back to the community - not just the open source community, but the computer users community. I have worked with computers for close to 40 years, and every single time I have sought help from others, I have not only been given the help I requested, but far more. In my opinion it is time I give some of that back. If someone makes money off it, more power to them. I know for a fact that some companies have incorporated my dll's and libraries into their commercial products. All I have ever asked is that credit be given to me for the code I have provided. It always has been to the best of my knowledge. -- Mike White Mike White's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=630 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28873 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

At hourly intervals (consistent with the cache purge fix), Lots of disk activity, some Slim CPU activity, (indicating its I/O bound) lasting for between say 3-8 minutes. This stalls all clients of slimserver (indicating slimserver is busy on its main thread?). Observable effects. Playing Slim devices: Buffer empties, not refreshed, music stops. Unresponsive to any command until disk activity finished. So thats only about 90% uptime on an hourly basis when listening :( Non playing slim devices running clock screensaver: Clock does not update - giving good feedback of when issue started - and how long it lasts. Anybody else experiencing this issue? Is a "one size fits all" solution appropriate for all cases? Would some logging and recording help? (e.g. starting purge... purge ended ... took X mins) Log the elapsed time for a purge, and if its longer than some threshold - say the buffer size on a SB, defer the next purge, or take into account free space on the disk, or whatever). blue;150255 Wrote: > ... in a free market ...Of course it's not a free market in the sense of a > perfectly competitive one. It's a market of monopolistic competition. For people who buy CDs, there are no close substitutes for their favorite bands. Accordingly, the sellers can extract some monopoly rents. This, I believe, is enough to account for your observation that prices don't track production costs. (But also, there are a lot of costs besides manufacturing that probably haven't gone down.) But then, I think, the heroes are the almost-as-good bands, not the people who "liberate" the stars' product. As to the price of downloads compared to CDs, I think the key is that most people don't want most songs on most CDs. Yes, $12 for downloading 12 songs compares unfavorably in many ways to a $12 CD. But if you want 3 songs (or 1), your choices are 3 downloads for $3 or $12 for a disc, a box, and some "bonus material." In this sense the suits are in fact selling tracks for less than they have ever sold them for before. Even 45 rpm singles used to sell for close to a 1960 dollar (for much the same reason), if I remember right, which is close to the price of a CD in real terms. -- tom permutt tom permutt's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1893 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28858 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

However, I do suggest that the CD price seems to be artificially fixed at the current price of $12-$15 over the last 20 years without adding value (while computers remain at a $500 to $1500 cost, their computing power aka value, has dramatically increased). So how does one price a CD? If the price were indeed just a reflection of recouping the costs of production plus a fixed profit margin, then simple logic dictates that the cost to record/produce and manufacture/distribute an album 10 years ago versus today should be dramatically lower given technology advances (even including inflation costs, etc.). So, say the above is currect and the cost to produce an album has gone down in cost. Is the media industry obligated to pass the cost savings onto the consumer? No. They can price the CD however they want to. They do not have to justify any price. However, in a free market where price is not artificially fixed, since there is more margin in the CD price, logic again says that someone will try to undercut someone else's prices and start lowering their price. The price of CDs should naturally float to a lower stable price point until more technology advances occur. Has this happened? No. Something is gumming the works up artificially. On the other hand, lets say my reasoning above is not accurate. Lets leave the costs of CDs alone all-together. Lets now look at the online price of a song. I question the $1 per song online price. They have taken the entire physical production and logistics component out of the loop (and replaced it with a far less costly technology computer distribution method) and yet the price remains almost exactly the same as a CD per song?Either the media industry was losing money on the sales of CDs (surrre) or they have artificially set the online song price high. Why in the world would they do that? I don't know why, but I think it is because they want to stifle the online sales channel. Am I a socialist who thinks people "deserve" free things? No. I support real capitalism which needs free markets. The media industry is not that. True competition looks different than the media industry. I believe that as alternative methods that lower the net cost to the consumer have sprung up over the last 5 years (not just piracy) they have been ruthlessly and short sightedly cut down. There is a cost for this policy. -- blue blue's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=798 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28858 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

You can use "Save Album Art to Album Folder v1.3" at Doug's AppleScripts: http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scripts13.php?page=1#savealbumart Or you can use "Embed Artwork v1.1" at Doug's AppleScripts: http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scripts13.php?page=1#embedart I don't recommend "Embed Artwork v1.1" since it will bloat all your files with artwork which is not very efficient and it will modify your files. Another option is to wait for Slim Server 7 which should support iTunes 7 artwork. Good Luck! In any case, Apple's play will be the iTV and their brand will win over many in the market - it's probably one of the reasons Slim decided to bulk up with LogiTech. A browser interface can be smart, but it's slow because the screen has to be refreshed and all data reloaded and re-interpreted. Ajax helps a bit, but as soon as you move from the page, you're back to a slow refresh. IMO it just looks and feels clunky compared to alternatives like iTunes and Sonos. A good Harmony control can fix this, spending more effort on the web interface won't. -- CardinalFang CardinalFang's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=962 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29081 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Let's formulate it this way: I'd like kind of a local Squeezenetwork, just for the radio station presets and the alarms, and being able to interface with AlienBBC. (BTW I dont' like putting more ore less personal data on a remote server if there is no really a need for it - and that's not the case here, there is no added value for me, only for slimdevices/logitech I suppose). Having this simple local squeezenetwork, I'd need upnp on the SB3 itself for getting my local music archive played just by browsing it; I already use twonky mediaserver for my other box (Roku Soundbridge radio) this way. > What's improvements would you like to see? "Better" is rather vague. Well, navigation inside a track is not really good, isn't it? I never got it to fast forward in bigger steps (maybe there is some plugin for this), I can't set repeats or marks inside a track (or I am wrong?)... Re: [slim] Re: Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7
- separation of the SlimServer engine itself and the database/music Please define "SlimServer engine". The DB backend is already separated, as is the scanner. - possibility to only run the SS-kernel with radio stations, while streaming music e.g. through UpNP (switching off the SS music database and streaming engine). No need for UPnP, you can use SqueezeNetwork to achieve this, don't you? - and when using the SS-database catalogue anyway, better support of classical music - better fast-forward and fast-back function inside one music file, also on the player web-interface (right panel) What's improvements would you like to see? [slim] Re: Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7
After using the SB3 for some weeks with a little NAS (Synology DS-106), I'd like to see: - separation of the SlimServer engine itself and the database/music archive administration; this way the footprint of the "SS-kernel" could be very small and compact - also, (optional) logical separation of the radio stations and radio favourites from the music archive/database. - update of the SB3-firmware to natively support UpNP - possibility to only run the SS-kernel with radio stations, while streaming music e.g. through UpNP (switching off the SS music database and streaming engine). - and when using the SS-database catalogue anyway, better support of classical music - better fast-forward and fast-back function inside one music file, also on the player web-interface (right panel) Thats just how I'd use my SB3; I don't really need a huge catalogue application for my music, having the following simple folder structure: Genre (about two dozens, including many classical-specifics) -> Artist/Composer -> Album/Interpreter -> CD1..X (optional) -> Song Title (classical: Piece and Tempo) -- glem01 glem01's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7047 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26874 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: A question about limited sample rate.
Well, here's a guess ... the vast majority of recorded material is at 44.1kHz sample rate, with a little at 48 ... DVDA isn't, IMHO, mainstream (ok, there could be a debate about that!). As it happens you can play a 96kHz stream on an SB2/3, it gets downsampled in the server. And a transporter can play 96, apparently. [slim] A question about limited sample rate.
This is not a criticism so spare me the flames. I love my SB and was describing what it did to an avid Headfier/hacker. When he inquired about streaming DVDA I told him the SB was limited to a 44/48 khz sample rate. He seemed quite knowledgeable (having developed his own software to maximize the quality of the bit stream out of his PC) and claimed there should be no reason for this limitation. Other than assuming it was a bandwidth issue (which apparently it isn't) I was at a loss to explain the limitation . Can anyone explain this to me so that I can pass it on. -- gdg gdg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1122 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29093 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] On which MySQL port is SlimServer running?
Hello, where can I change the MySQL port on which SlimServer is running? I am asking because I have another MySQL application that is running on my machine and it doesn't work as long as SlimServer is active. I thought: Maybe I can tell SlimServer to use another port and then I won't have to turn it off each time I use my other application.
