When I bring up the Touch interface on my Sony LF-X11 web browser, the
bar at the bottom of the screen with the settings link does not
display, several other buttons don't work either.

[slim] Re: TouchScreen Skin

2006-10-27 Thread merc4a2

I have a LocationFree LF-X11 touchscreen device. It works OK as a
touchscreen remote using the default skin, but the size of the buttons
on the touch skin look great and the skin seems ideal. However, I
can't drill down (click on) anything any deeper than the large icons at
the top level. All the text also seems to not have any links associated
with it, so I can't click on the "More" link to get to the other buttons
on the main page. Any ideas what the problem might be?

[slim] Re: Open Source Dream Falls Apart?

2006-10-27 Thread Mike White

I am an open source developer, and have been for ten years or more. Not
on SlimServer, but on Info-Zip.org.

I do this because:

1) I like seeing my ideas out there, and people enjoying what product I
put out.

2) I truly enjoy coding - when I have the time - and it makes a good
hobby that doesn't require a lot of money to maintain.

3) Most importantly, I am giving back to the community - not just the
open source community, but the computer users community. I have worked
with computers for close to 40 years, and every single time I have
sought help from others, I have not only been given the help I
requested, but far more. In my opinion it is time I give some of that
back. If someone makes money off it, more power to them. I know for a
fact that some companies have incorporated my dll's and libraries into
their commercial products. All I have ever asked is that credit be
given to me for the code I have provided. It always has been to the
best of my knowledge.

The following script traverses your file system recursively and calls
the conversion command in every directory.
Yust point it at the root of your music library and let it do its work
(if you're on linux).

-s.

Code:

  #!/bin/sh

  traverse()
  {
  # Traverse a directory
  cd "$1"
  pngtopnm cover.png | pnmtojpeg > cover.jpg
  ls | while read i
  do
  if [ -d "$i" ]; then
  echo "Directory: $i"
  # Calling this as a subshell means that when the called
  # function changes directory, it will not affect our
  # current working directory
  (traverse "$i" `expr $2 + 1`)
  fi
  done
  }

  if [ -z "$1" ]; then
  traverse . 0
  else
  traverse "$1" 0
  fi

Convert to jpg.
If you run linux you might have the netpbm graphic tools already
installed.
Use this command to convert cover.png to cover.jpg:

Code:

pngtopnm cover.png | pnmtojpeg > cover.jpg

There should be binaries for windows available at the project website,
too.

Works for me.
Would it work for people running on "resource constrained" machines?,
which is what got us here in the first place.

Any easy way to define where the file cache lives, and what its likely
footprint is, so people can plan around it?

Can one size fit all for such differing requirements?

On my system(s), Windows XP "enough" space on C:\ but with a large
collection (300GB \ 500GB +) of tagged flacs with album art Typically
300x300 - ish, on 6.5.1 nightlies after this fix, I've noticed the
following.

At hourly intervals (consistent with the cache purge fix), Lots of disk
activity, some Slim CPU activity, (indicating its I/O bound) lasting for
between say 3-8 minutes. This stalls all clients of slimserver
(indicating slimserver is busy on its main thread?).

Observable effects.

Playing Slim devices:
Buffer empties, not refreshed, music stops. Unresponsive to any command
until disk activity finished. So thats only about 90% uptime on an
hourly basis when listening :(

Non playing slim devices running clock screensaver:
Clock does not update - giving good feedback of when issue started -
and how long it lasts.

Anybody else experiencing this issue?

Is a "one size fits all" solution appropriate for all cases?
Would some logging and recording help?
(e.g. starting purge... purge ended ... took X mins)
Log the elapsed time for a purge, and if its longer than some threshold
- say the buffer size on a SB, defer the next purge, or take into
account free space on the disk, or whatever).

Moving cache purge to separate thread? ( is this possible?, what about
cache coherency etc)

Any more info you need?

I've opened this as Bug 4432

one. It's a market of monopolistic competition. For people who buy CDs,
there are no close substitutes for their favorite bands. Accordingly,
the sellers can extract some monopoly rents. This, I believe, is enough
to account for your observation that prices don't track production
costs. (But also, there are a lot of costs besides manufacturing that
probably haven't gone down.) But then, I think, the heroes are the
almost-as-good bands, not the people who "liberate" the stars'
product.

As to the price of downloads compared to CDs, I think the key is that
most people don't want most songs on most CDs. Yes, $12 for downloading
12 songs compares unfavorably in many ways to a $12 CD. But if you want
3 songs (or 1), your choices are 3 downloads for $3 or $12 for a disc,
a box, and some "bonus material." In this sense the suits are in fact
selling tracks for less than they have ever sold them for before. Even
45 rpm singles used to sell for close to a 1960 dollar (for much the
same reason), if I remember right, which is close to the price of a CD
in real terms.

Ahh, gotcha. Thanks. Although as you mentioned previously, if the
Roku doesn't support AAC then I guess it's kind of a moot point. I'll

Go to Home/Player settings/Audio/Bitrate Limitation (or something): if you
set it, Slimserver will stream MP3, if you don't, slimserver will send
whatever the player knows the best. (FLAC -> WAV -> MP3)

I think they should just hold hands and live in harmony. That

Even more niche than the SB (is today). I'm sure it is up to Sean what

[slim] Browse Music Folders Issue

2006-10-27 Thread saltydog4791

Hello all,

Simple question I have. Is it possible to force Browse Music Folders
to actually refresh the folders without rescanning the music library.
I had a Windows shortcut pointing to another server that was down
during my last scan so Slim now is treating it as a file instead of
following the shortcut. There must be a way to force the directory
listing to refresh without doing a scan. I have a massive library that
I do not want to rescan again.

Thanks to anyone who can help me with this.

I think a cool idea would be for the SB to have a video output so

[slim] MLB Gameday Audio on SB

2006-10-27 Thread Mitch Harding
Hi everyone,A while back I opened a feature request for working out a way to listen to MLB Gameday Audio on the SB.  It is feature request 3280:http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3280
I just wanted to bring it up again here in the forum, so any of you who would like to see this can vote for the feature:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/votes.cgi?action="">This would require SD to negotiate with MLB, I think.  Maybe now that they're on board with Logitech they'll have a better negotiating position.  Anyway, just wanted to bring this up in the public forum again, so that anyone else who would like to see this implemented can cast their vote.
Thanks!Mitch

[slim] Re: Decent Universal Remote

2006-10-27 Thread bigjilm

In case anyone else is asking the same question, I'm going to throw out
a vote for the Phillips Pronto.

I'm a programmer by trade, so I don't mind spending hours and hours
tweeking the config. My old Pronto has been amazing for the better
part of 6 years, and it still controls every IR device in the house.

Beware though, it took me a TON of effort to build the initial
interface. Think about how much effort it would take to build a remote
UI in Visual Basic, plus learning all of the IR codes, and that's
comparable to the Pronto effort.

Now, if only I could convince the wife that the TSU9600 is a required
addition to the household...

> AdamTo be clear, I differentiate in my mind the media industry and
musicians. I thought it was clear I was alluding to the media
industry, those that own the music and sell it as the 'suits'.

With regards to the comment above "How on earth could a $10 CD not be
justified?" The industry can charge what the wish, I ask for no
'justification'. However, I do suggest that the CD price seems to be
artificially fixed at the current price of $12-$15 over the last 20
years without adding value (while computers remain at a $500 to $1500
cost, their computing power aka value, has dramatically increased).

So how does one price a CD? If the price were indeed just a reflection
of recouping the costs of production plus a fixed profit margin, then
simple logic dictates that the cost to record/produce and
manufacture/distribute an album 10 years ago versus today should be
dramatically lower given technology advances (even including inflation
costs, etc.).

So, say the above is currect and the cost to produce an album has gone
down in cost. Is the media industry obligated to pass the cost savings
onto the consumer? No. They can price the CD however they want to.
They do not have to justify any price. However, in a free market where
price is not artificially fixed, since there is more margin in the CD
price, logic again says that someone will try to undercut someone
else's prices and start lowering their price. The price of CDs should
naturally float to a lower stable price point until more technology
advances occur. Has this happened? No. Something is gumming the
works up artificially.

On the other hand, lets say my reasoning above is not accurate. Lets
leave the costs of CDs alone all-together. Lets now look at the online
price of a song. I question the $1 per song online price. They have
taken the entire physical production and logistics component out of the
loop (and replaced it with a far less costly technology computer
distribution method) and yet the price remains almost exactly the same
as a CD per song?Either the media industry was losing money on the
sales of CDs (surrre) or they have artificially set the online song
price high. Why in the world would they do that? I don't know why,
but I think it is because they want to stifle the online sales channel.

Am I a socialist who thinks people "deserve" free things? No. I
support real capitalism which needs free markets. The media industry
is not that. True competition looks different than the media industry.
I believe that as alternative methods that lower the net cost to the
consumer have sprung up over the last 5 years (not just piracy) they
have been ruthlessly and short sightedly cut down. There is a cost for
this policy.

I think they are the only labels that can get you significant radio
play. More play, more popularity... and that translates to more CD
sales... and more profit for the RIAA. I don't really understand how it
all works and I'm sure most of the bands don't either, but it does seem
like the RIAA has the upper hand across the board as far as profits go.
I think the only place bands makes any significant money is on tour
selling merchandise.

I'm not sure how it works with artists that create their own labels
like Prince did with Paisley Park Records. The digital age has
certainly made it easier to produce your own stuff but I think the RIAA
still controls distribution.

Cheers.

Re: [slim] Album art in itunes

You can use "Save Album Art to Album Folder v1.3" at Doug's AppleScripts:
http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scripts13.php?page=1#savealbumart
Or you can use "Embed Artwork v1.1" at Doug's AppleScripts:
http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scripts13.php?page=1#embedart
I don't recommend "Embed Artwork v1.1" since it will bloat all your files with
artwork which is not very efficient and it will modify your files.
Another option
is to wait for Slim Server 7 which should support iTunes 7 artwork. Good Luck!

Youy *are* able to play back all of the music on another PC connected
to the same network and I believe there are remote control add-ons that
allow you to control iTunes from another Mac, but I may be mistaken on
that. In any case, Apple's play will be the iTV and their brand will
win over many in the market - it's probably one of the reasons Slim
decided to bulk up with LogiTech.

A browser interface can be smart, but it's slow because the screen has
to be refreshed and all data reloaded and re-interpreted. Ajax helps a
bit, but as soon as you move from the page, you're back to a slow
refresh. IMO it just looks and feels clunky compared to alternatives
like iTunes and Sonos. A good Harmony control can fix this, spending
more effort on the web interface won't.

User self-help is pretty much standard nowdays in the industry.
I can understand the feelings of "betrayal", especially if one is a
major contributor, but there was never any guarantee of longevity. SB

Logitech is a "two rubber feet" company, wheras SD was a "four rubber
feet" company. Any company that saves a few cents on their products by
using two rubber feet instead of four because "it is just as good"
needs to have their bean counters shot! (And that is a lot of
companies, with a lot of bean counters to shoot..)

Is a browser interface not smart?
How do you use iTunes on your server PC while sitting at your laptop in
another room, or even on your PDA or Smartphone?
Answer: You don't.

SD and their team should know what logitech stands for and the
associated customer perception and experience - if they've done their
homework - it's no accident so many people fear this marriage!

if Logitech has any savy at all they will address this issue with a new
hi-end division and start off right with an excellent product!

That's correct!
We already know what Logitech is (reasonably) good at, and it sure as
heck is not audio.

This means an SB3 (or derivative) will have to cost about $150 to sell
as a Logitech. And that, in turn, might mean a lot when it comes to
quality.

The general consensus seems to be that the NVidia binary drivers are, in

I purchased a Harmony 525 from Logitech.
One of the buttons on the remote failed after about 10 mths and
Logitech replaced it without any fuss. Their customer service was
excellent and I had my new remote within 1 week.
I would still recommend their remotes and I agree the web based
software is kind of klunky (remind you of something else?) but it works
and the remote works great.

I think the squeezebox is let down by buggy software. When I purchased
my sb1 the software was at version 5.4, searching was a pain and and
re-scanning took forever. I was expecting an itunes like interface
instead I got a browser based interface, not a good start.
6.5 is an improvement but there are still problems as can be seen from
the boards, the amount of tag fixing/changing I've had to do in order
for slimserver to work properly is very annoying.
People like me who use itunes, which itself is not perfect, wonder why
slimserver cannot work in the same way.
No software is bug free but maybe a cash injection from Logitech will
allow more programmers to be hired and the software will improve.
Perhaps proper applications could be produced and we can get away from
the browser interface.
If slimdevices under the Logitech wing can improve their software then
I think this will be a good partnership.

OK. Let's formulate it this way: I'd like kind of a local
Squeezenetwork, just for the radio station presets and the alarms, and
being able to interface with AlienBBC. (BTW I dont' like putting more
ore less personal data on a remote server if there is no really a need
for it - and that's not the case here, there is no added value for me,
only for slimdevices/logitech I suppose).

Having this simple local squeezenetwork, I'd need upnp on the SB3
itself for getting my local music archive played just by browsing it; I
already use twonky mediaserver for my other box (Roku Soundbridge radio)
this way.

> What's improvements would you like to see? "Better" is rather vague.

Well, navigation inside a track is not really good, isn't it? I never
got it to fast forward in bigger steps (maybe there is some plugin for
this), I can't set repeats or marks inside a track (or I am wrong?)...

Greetings, manuel

Re: [slim] Re: Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7

2006-10-27 Thread Michael Herger

- separation of the SlimServer engine itself and the database/music

Please define "SlimServer engine". The DB backend is already separated, as
is the scanner.

- possibility to only run the SS-kernel with radio stations, while
streaming music e.g. through UpNP (switching off the SS music database
and streaming engine).

No need for UPnP, you can use SqueezeNetwork to achieve this, don't you?

- and when using the SS-database catalogue anyway, better support of
classical music
- better fast-forward and fast-back function inside one music file,
also on the player web-interface (right panel)

What's improvements would you like to see? "Better" is rather vague.

[slim] Re: Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7

2006-10-27 Thread glem01

After using the SB3 for some weeks with a little NAS (Synology DS-106),
I'd like to see:
- separation of the SlimServer engine itself and the database/music
archive administration; this way the footprint of the "SS-kernel" could
be very small and compact
- also, (optional) logical separation of the radio stations and radio
favourites from the music archive/database.
- update of the SB3-firmware to natively support UpNP
- possibility to only run the SS-kernel with radio stations, while
streaming music e.g. through UpNP (switching off the SS music database
and streaming engine).
- and when using the SS-database catalogue anyway, better support of
classical music
- better fast-forward and fast-back function inside one music file,
also on the player web-interface (right panel)

Thats just how I'd use my SB3; I don't really need a huge catalogue
application for my music, having the following simple folder structure:
Genre (about two dozens, including many classical-specifics) ->
Artist/Composer -> Album/Interpreter -> CD1..X (optional) -> Song Title
(classical: Piece and Tempo)

Well, here's a guess ... the vast majority of recorded material is at
44.1kHz sample rate, with a little at 48 ... DVDA isn't, IMHO,
mainstream (ok, there could be a debate about that!).

As it happens you can play a 96kHz stream on an SB2/3, it gets
downsampled in the server. And a transporter can play 96, apparently.

This is not a criticism so spare me the flames. I love my SB and was
describing what it did to an avid Headfier/hacker. When he inquired
about streaming DVDA I told him the SB was limited to a 44/48 khz
sample rate. He seemed quite knowledgeable (having developed his own
software to maximize the quality of the bit stream out of his PC) and
claimed there should be no reason for this limitation. Other than
assuming it was a bandwidth issue (which apparently it isn't) I was at
a loss to explain the limitation . Can anyone explain this to me so
that I can pass it on.
