I guess I was just looking for a comprehensive list of what's been
changed, added, improved, sped up, etc.

If I don't know what's there, obviously I have no reason to upgrade.
But if I know what's new & improved, maybe I might see a reason to go
for it...

Thanks though, that attitude has indeed kept me happily at 6.3.1 for
quite some time now...

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If you are happy, why even ask the question? I ran 5.4 for about a year
after the 6.x series servers were out.

Even if it was 50% faster for some particular operation, would that
justify more than a few seconds of upgrade time to you? it sure would
not for me, if I was happy and it was 'working fine'

Upgrade when you need what the upgrade offers. All computer upgrades
have costs, if not in money, then in time and often in aggravation. My
main Windows box ran Windows 2000 up until six months ago, and I only
changed it because the boot disk drive failed.

Even my replacement box, which has had Windows XP on it since I bought
it a couple of years ago, is never going to see Windows Vista.

[slim] Why upgrade slimserver? Serious question...

2007-02-16 Thread GeorgeE12

A general question about upgrading the slimserver software...

I have four SB3's and am happily running the final release of the 6.3.1
software.

I tried upgrading to 6.5.x a few times in the early days, but ran into
so many problems, I decided to hold off for a while

Now, I'm fairly sure that the latest 6.5.1 official, or the 6.5.2
nightly, is pretty stable, and I can probably try again to upgrade.

But my question is, Why should I? I'm serious...

If all I have are SB3's, and 6.3.1 is working fine for me, should I
even bother to upgrade? Can somebody point out the major functional
differences between 6.5.x and 6.3.1 that might give me a reason to
upgrade?

Like, Does it index my music library faster? Is it more stable? (I'm
not having stability problems.) Does it use less memory? (That seems
unlikely from what I understand.) Is the web interface noticeably
faster?

I'm just curious if 6.5.x actually represents a functional step forward
for a user like myself, or if it was just a code re-write which uses a
new database.

Thanks for any info,

George

2007-02-16 Thread fingers

* What version of Vista are you running? (Home Premium, Ultimate, etc.)
Also specify if it's 32-bit or 64-bit.
Ultimate, 32-bit

* What version of Slimserver have you installed?
I have tried them all after 6.3.1. 6.3.1 is the only version that will
work. In fact, it works first time each time, no issues, not fiddle
F&$*ing around

* What error messages are you getting? (if any)
No error messages. All versions other than 6.3.1 show Slim.exe
running, the interface says it is running, Services says it is running,
the systray icon says it is running, even Slim support agreed it was
running, the browser opens but is blank.

* What additional Security software are you using? (Firewalls,
Antivirus, etc.)
Besides Windows Vista Firewall, ETrust AV

* What happens if you try running Slim.exe manually from a DOS prompt?
(Cut and paste any errors.)
No errors. Same thing. It says Slim is running

If two have the same MAC address then you will definitely get crashes
and all sorts of other odd behavior. We had a problem where the
settings on the device could get corrupted and this may have caused
both to get stuck with the same bogus MAC.

To fix, go to view current settings, scroll down to MAC address, and
press right. You can then edit the MAC - enter the one that is printed
on the unit's label. Press right to save.

I don't really understand why renaming it would help... I was having
problems with my SB3 with all other SBs off (unplugged). So I didn't
check mac addresses. I did one test with my mac as a server (where
usually I have my XP PC). I installed 6.5.0 and the SB was fine. I then
installed 6.5.1 and t he sb started rebooting. I installed 6.5.0 and it
was fine again.
I haven't found the time to downgrade my XP PC to 6.5.0 yet - will
probably do it tomorrow or Sunday. I'll report back with results but I
am fairly convinced it is a problem with the firmware in 6.5.1. I can't
explain why only one SB is affected though!
Where did you see the SBs had the same MAC address? That DOES seem very
odd! I just checked mine and they are all different (similar but
different ;-) )

Re: [slim] SB3 rebooting very frequently

2007-02-16 Thread blueweiser

hi there.
i kind of have the same problem.
slightly different:
3 x SB3 and one older model.
the oldest of the SB3 (13 months) keeps rebooting, but with very little
success. it takes a couple of factory resets and setup-procedures to get
the device up and running again, just to watch it dying after some 10
seconds of streaming or so.
i monitored that very thread and tried every aspect and idea
mentioned.

i was ready to send it in, but there was one little thing, that kept me
from giving up. obviously the same setup i'm having problems with
recently, was working absolutely great for some weeks or months, so i
wasn't really bothering with ip-conflicts or so. Long story short, i
just found out, that two of my devices DO HAVE THE SAME MAC-ADDRESS,
which i thought would just not be possible. As soon as i started
figuring out a way to solve my problem i renamed the sq, i had problems
with "broken". but after FACTORY RESETS the old name kept reappearing
again. Ain't that just crazy? I'm really wondering how that happens!

Now I am so surprised and confused, that i just don't know what to do
anymore.

Did you ever solved your problem?
And has anyone here a clue what i'm supposed to do now?

Because iTunes changed where they hide the album art and I'm not sure
if anyone has fully figured out where it moved to.

If you store your albums in a "folder per album" (ie, something like:
E:\Music\Artist\GreatestHits would be "Greatest Hits" by Artist, then
just save the cover are in that folder as "cover.jpg" and you are
done.

You -can- embed them in the tags of the file itself, but I find it
harder to mess with them then, and trickier to notice subtle things
like one track having "wrong" art.

[slim] Setup in 6.5.1

2007-02-16 Thread danco

In 6.5.0 and below, pressing and holding the Power button brought one to
a setup menu, with "To start setup, press Right" as the default option,
and pressing Up and Down leading to other options.

Now, as far as I can see, pressing and holding Power gives, if things
are more or less ok but not completely, just the message "connecting to
network" followed by "obtaining IP address" followed by completing the
connection. There seems to be no option to go through the setup
procedure.

This can be a little inconvenient. My SB was resolutely refusing to
connect to my SlimServer recently. It gave me "connecting to network"
then "obtaining IP address" which it said for a long time, then
"connecting to SlimServer" for a long time, then the display went black
again.

In the end it turned out that it wasn't an issue with
Squeezebox/SlimServer but a problem on my wireless network.

But if I had been able to go through all the steps of the SB setup
process it would probably have been easier for me to diagnose what was
happening.

So is this a change in firmware? Or have I managed to set something so
that I get fewer choices when I press and hold Power? Or what else is
going on?

SB2, SS 6.5.1, Mac OS 10.4.8

You need to allow port 9000 and port 3483. 3483 should allow both TCP
and UDP.

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2007-02-16 Thread RDaneel

I'm having trouble, too. Running Vista Home Premium 32 bit, 6.5.1,
(11206 release). When I have the Windows Firewall on, the sb3 will
never connect to the slimserver, no matter what IP or DHCP settings I
use. It will work with internet radio just fine, so I know the network
is ok. With the firewall off, no problems at all. Even with port 9000
whitelisted, it still won't connect. Had no problems with the Win XP
firewall running the same exact setup.

Seems like conflict between Slim and the Vista security, I'd love to
have a patch or workaround so I can get the firewall turned back on!

Re: [slim] End of songs chopped off

2007-02-16 Thread brucesee

I am having the same issue when streaming Apple Lossless files from my
ITunes library and FLAC files. As I listen, I can see the counter
running down and the songs cut out (and move to the next track) usually
with about 7-8 seconds left to play. Any suggestions as to how to fix
this extremely annoying problem (I mean, what's the point in listening
to music if you can't hear the full tune)? Thanks.

Unfortunately neither device acts as a soundcard.

There's a workaround, install Shoutcast and tune into the captured
stream like an Internet radio station.

You also get the lovely "system noises" - beeps, boops and boings
Windows loves so much.

[slim] Transporter and Winamp

2007-02-16 Thread cmachine

Hi
I'm interested in the transporter or the squeezebox.

But I want to use them as an externeal soundcard that can be used with
every player (like winamp, musicmatch, etc.)

Is it possible to use the transporter or the squeezebo as external
soundcards (with asio drivers of course)?
I don't like the web-streaming

thanks for more information

Depending on where in NY (it is a big state, ya know! ;) ), you could
always have one shipped to someone local... I think there are a couple
retail places in the state where you can actually go in and buy one.

Yes, you've got to point your Squeezebox to the PC's wired IP address.

Is there a reason you're using the PC's wireless connection? Best just
disable it. It's probably interfering with your router's wireless
communication.

Re: [slim] 100% CPU usage

Bah - the problem resurfaced when I restarted Slimserver later in the
day.

I disabled the suspect plugin to no avail.

Then I noticed that there was LOTS of network activity (considering
very little should have been going on) and Squeezebox would no longer
connect to Slimserver.

I appear to have sorted the problem by reducing the security levels in
Slimserver. It was working yesterday though - why the change today?

I guess it's proportionate with the number of people who have to reset

Re: [slim] Microwave oven causes dropouts

2007-02-16 Thread Fleury

Same basic problem, after a few days of OK connection, my SB3 started to
drop out, frequent reconnects, black screen etc. Power cycling the cable
gateway would solve the problem for a brief time, then more lost
connections. The network test would show 90-100% connection, even at
the highest throughput, at the tip top it might drop to 85% or so. The
buffer settings were all maxed out, netstumbler showed nobody on my
channel nearby (isolated house). In theory, all should have been
copacetic, so maybe it was the IP or an intermittent squeezenetwork
problems? I put softsqueeze on my office PC, a different IP running
from a university mainframe with bandwidth to spare. The connection was
rock solid, only stuttering or dropping the signal once or twice when
the mainframe was having a bad hair day. To make matters worse, I
couldn't stream flacs at all on my SB3 at home. My first flac files
buffered for a half a minute, then stuttered horribly until I put them
out of their misery. But the same files played OK in a flac player on
the PC.

My home network linksys WCG200 and Linksys range extender were just not
up to the challenge, even with dual high gain antennas on the gateway.
Sending the signal to the front of my very long house turned out to be
a perilous journey. Every time the heat or AC kicked in, or the
microwave started up, or the cat farted, the signal would vanish. SB3
refused to rebuffer half the time. I've seen the same symptoms
described in a dozen different threads. It got so bad I could not even
listen to a single song on the radio without the agony of rebuffering.
What to do?

After much research, I decided to give the homeplug option a try, and
picked up a Netgear XE104 base unit for the router, and an XE103 for
the SB3. Don't buy the older versions that only do 10-14 mbs on a good
day. The pricier 85 mbs models are the way to go, though 85 mbs is
science fiction - but I'm getting 50-60 mbs over about 100 foot
distance, which is more than adequate. Anything to do with networking
is generally as bad a setup/install experience as you are likely to
have. But these little adapters were literally plug and play, and how
often have you had that experience with a PC product? I didn't have to
install interface software (though it later proved useful to monitor
the signal). Just stuck them in the wall, popped in the ethernet patch
cords, reset the SB3 from wireless to wired, and that was that. Over
the past week I have had only two blackouts, both due to the wireless
connection from slimserver on my PC to my now hybrid wireless/homeplug
LAN. No more dropouts, no more endless rebuffering. Just an
uninterrupted flow of beautiful music. And my flac files load almost
instantly and stream flawlessly (and sound FANTASTIC).

There are some problems with homeplug technology. Old or bad wiring
could limit your success. My home is newly wired, with a single breaker
panel, so not an issue for me. The biggest drawback is losing my
protection from power surges. Homeplug adapters have to be plugged
directly into the wall, power strips with surge protection just won't
work. My speed went from 65 to 10 MBS when plugged it into a top end
Monster Cable strip, and SB3 could no longer find the server. Almost
every surge protector on the market now includes line filtering, which
is great for quiet stereo listening or high end LCD TV's, but it treats
the homeplug signal as noise and trashes it. Belkin makes a power strip
with one plug designed for homeplug equipment, but that seems to be it
for the market, and I really don't want to shell out major bucks for a
9 outlet strip with only one homeplug compatible outlet. The cheapest
strips have no filtering, but are nearly useless in terms of surge
protection capacity. If anyone knows of a surge protector (for a
standard plug or for just ethernet cable) that is homeplug compatible
please let me know. Meanwhile, I can let the music play all day, just
in time for Mardi Gras. Laissez les bons temps roulez!

I've experienced the problem with the web interface not starting up

making the SlimServerMySQL service startup automatically and then
disabling the tray program from startup using MSConfig. If I start the

Everything is well again now. I seem to have cured it by
uninstalling/reinstalling Slimserver itself.

Incidentally, I'm running 6.5.1 on XP (SP2).

I think I've ruled Cyberhawk out of the equation - I'm starting to
think a Plugin may have been to blame. I'll investigate.

Thanks again,

Daz

[slim] Analog and Digital Hookup

2007-02-16 Thread thesil

I currently run my SB3 with a digital audio output. I am going to add a
Rotel receiver into the mix. My question is this: Can I run an analog
audio interconect to the second receiver in addition to the digital.

Thanks

Contact them in advance to make sure they have it in stock for you.
Another option is to order from our web site and have it shipped to

Any time I want to run Slim Server, I first have to go to Services and

Your PC's wireless and wired ports will have different IP and MAC
addresses - perhaps the Squeezeboxes are still trying to connect to the
wireless ports? With the PC's wireless connection disabled, try
resetting the Squeezeboxes (hold down power button, or remove and
reconnect power). Then go through the Squeezebox configuration process
and reselect your server.

Cheers,

Ian

The PC is wired to the router, the SBs are wireless. It has both wired
and wireless connections. If I knock out the wireless connection I can
still access the web (i.e. the wired connection to the router is fine)
but the SBs drop out.

Re: [slim] 100% CPU usage

2007-02-16 Thread Siduhe

Having just looked up Cyberhawk, I'm wondering if the reinstallation is
what has sent Slimserver into a flat spin in the first place. Some
firewalls and on-access scanners mistake the MySQL process in
slimserver for a dodgy process. The solution is to have them ignore
*.myi and *.myd files. Can you do this with Cyberhawk ?

Re: [slim] 100% CPU usage

2007-02-16 Thread Siduhe

Difficult to debug the symptoms without a bit more information like what
OS you are using, what version of Slimsever, what plugins you have
installed, whether you have any antivirus or firewall software
installed ?

Couple of thoughts - Have you tried killing the slim.exe process, then
rebooting your pc ?

Have you added any new music, shortcuts to folders or playlists
recently ? Is Slimserver rescanning when you open up the web interface
? Slimserver can sometimes get caught up in a loop if there are
recursive links in your music library.

Are you using MusicMagic or Itunes to populate your Slimserver library
? If so, does changing the reload interval of both in the web
interfact to 0, stopping Slimserver and starting again sort the problem
out ?

Is it scanning your collection? You might leave it for a while and see
whether it settles down again or not. Meanwhile please create a little
factsheet about your system: operating system version, slimserver version,
AV scanner etc.

Re: [slim] DVBShout

2007-02-16 Thread florca

In answer to your question about channel selection -

Several ways to do this, but I've put the URL for each available
channel (station) into a single "BBC Radio" playlist, from where they
can be selected by number from the remote - just like presets on a
normal tuner. You could also put them into Favourites if more
convenient.

There are other solutions to streaming entire DVB multiplexes instead
of DVBShout - VLC under Linux should work, as might a program called
"GetStream" which can be found at
http://silicon-verl.de/home/flo/projects/streaming/ . DVBShout was
simply the first one I tried and has worked well for me.

[slim] 100% CPU usage

2007-02-16 Thread dazbarber

Help!

I turned on my PC this morning and, after about 30 seconds, slim.exe
started taking over the CPU.

I rebooted - the same thing happened.

The only change to my PC since yesterday has been the uninstallation of
'Cyberhawk' from Novatix.

I reinstalled this and restored my PC back to yesterday. No luck -
slim.exe is still taking over.

What now?

Thanks for any help,

Daz

I'd second that. Bugs have been filed e.g.
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4699
, but progress seems to have stopped. This is very frustrating for
many. The suggested fix in the bugzilla report (open and re-save the
JPEGs), didn't work for me; deleting all embedded artwork stopped SS
actually crashing, but the artwork still doesn't load, or some does and
some doesn't randomly. I've tried upgrading to SS 6.5.2, tried deleting
cache, etc.

Can someone at SlimDevices please comment on this?

The Windows telnet is plenty good enough for the CLI. It's the
Slimserver CLI that's awful (as in, not meant to be used by a human
being over telnet). The %xx codes you see are not UTF encoded.

Re: [slim] Running SlimServer as "service" on Mac

2007-02-16 Thread danco

So I was wrong in saying it couldn't be done.

In the SlimServer preference pane there are three option for automatic
start, namely "never", "when I log in", and "when system boots" which
is the option you want.

As for doing it with other programs, they mostly will not have this
particular option. You can make a program run when you login, using the
Accounts preference pane.

Because of the Unix underpinnings of OS X, I would guess that it is
possible to do what you want by juggling with Terminal, creating a
shell script, etc, but I don't know how to do it.

Though I still wonder why you want to do this, and whether what you
want could not be as well achieved by another method. Perhaps if you
explain your needs we could come up with an easy solution. One thing
that occurs to me, but might not be what you want, is to set up a user
with automatic login (possibly with restricted access to programs) and
then just set programs to start at login.
