Well, that does narrow things down a bit. Can we assume you've taken
the other tips in the thread and tried a server-reboot and fresh
batteries in the remote (the good response at the beginning of a
session and poor response as you use it more would tend to point
towards a battery problem)?

Are you using it wirelessly? These is often the sort of problem you'll
see if you're suffering from wireless interference (the music can
frequently play on due to the large buffer). To isolate the problem
you could try moving your box somewhere near your network switch and
wiring it directly into your network. If the latency disappears then
at least you know to start troubleshooting your wireless network.

Hello,

I'm having the exact same problem with my 2 year old SB2. It worked
flawlessly for nearly 2 years until recently. I haven't done any
firmware or software updates in over 1 year. Not sure what versions I
have installed.

It's very frustrating. As described the remote works for a few button
presses at the beginning of each listening session then starts freezing
up. The songs play unaffected. All buttons are non-responsive.

I'll also try disabling most plug-ins but I believe they are already
stripped down.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [slim] How do I remove Slimserver completely?

2007-03-12 Thread RichardG

Slimserver install on windows creates a service to handle the starting
of the MySQL database. I guess that this service hangs around after the
uninstall.

For Windows 2000/XP based installations, you can use the sc.exe command
to stop and delete the mysqld service installed by slimserver.

sc query SlimServerMySQL
sc stop SlimServerMySQL
sc delete SlimServerMySQL

Not sure if sc.exe is included in the reduced functionality set of XP
Media Center edition. If it is, use the above steps to remove the
service, and then delete the directory that could not be removed. If it
is not..

ZoneAlarm messes up socketwrapper just by being installed. I don't
understand how AlienBBC could still be working but the normal fix for
socketwrapper problem with ZoneAlarm is to replace socketwrapper by the
following version so it worth trying.
http://homepage.eircom.net/~altondsl/slim/socketwrapper_0.12_20060220.zip

1. Make sure no stream is playing
2. Download and unzip into a temporary areas.
3. Save current socktwrapper.exe in case you need to revert
4. Copy new unzipped Socketwrapper.exe into the server Bin/MS-Win32 ...
directory
5. Tell ZoneAlarm or whatever firewall that socketwrapper is a trusted
app.
6. Try again

[slim] Can't connect to Slimserver

2007-03-12 Thread ashmore

Hi
I'm having real trouble working out why my SB3 is so tempremental. I
think I have two issues. Firstly the SB can't always find slimserver
running from my PC. SServer is running from system tray on startup but
I just can't view the slimserver page on my machine using local host or
ip address. (I've been running ipconfig to see if IP is changing).
What's going on?

The second problem is that SB3 can't find the squeezenetwork when the
PC is off. This doesn't make sense to me at all. The dsiplay hangs for
a bit then goes blank and becomes unresponsive to the remote. I'm
running 6.5.2. Help please!

Error 10054 is typically a security app (Firewall, AV) affecting
socketwrapper. This happens even if firewall is disabled - just
installed but the fact that AlienBBC works means that may not be the
reason.

What security s/w have you installed ?

Now that you mention it, I seem to have similar issues. I had assumed
it was my remote batteries getting old, but I am quite sure its not
that now.

I never ever saw anything similar with version 6.1 running even on a
puny 1st Gen Linkstation, nor with v 6.5 on my g4 mac mini but now
i'm on 6.5.1 on windows and that might have something to do with it

this seems particularly pronounced when i have really long playlists
running for several hours. All of a sudden, the remote become
unresponsive, including volume, but the music continues unaffected. I
noticed that the Nokia770 skin also suffers some performance lags at
this time, though not as pronounced as the remote.

Yes, when it is on the wired connection (not wireless) it all works
correctly, so the Slimserver sees it as connected, and it plays as it
should, full function.

Regarding brightness, heh, I am sure that isn't the problem, because I
see the "Connecting to Slimserver..." bright and clear, it just doesn't
get past that.

As far as the firewall, this is on my LAN, there is no firewall, and I
have Windows Firewall disabled on the server computer.

LOL,

What can I say, it's a occupational hazard. I'm responsible for the
server and storage environments at an insurance company. I can't seem
to get disaster recovery plans out of my head. ;)

Albeit, I had to reboot the host OS due to patching. And I couldn't
believe my eyes when I started the VM with SS and tried to recreate the
hickup - nothing! It works fine now! My IR delays have decreased from
>0.5 to 0.05 or less. The same with the web build processes.

So the old reboot-routine is still the primary windows problem solver.
;)

Thanks for all help! I appreciated it!

Best regards,
CH

Does SlimServer ever see it as connected?

(silly question) Have you tried pressing brightness? Maybe the player
brightness was accidentally set to 0?

Have your firewall settings changed? Try temporarily disabling the

Re: [slim] Multiple servers - changing player to new server FROM the server?

2007-03-12 Thread mherger

So... here's a quickly hacked plugin ServerSwitcher, which allows you to
define other servers. They will show up under the web pages plugins
section, like the "Switch to Squeezenetwork". You should install the
plugin on all the servers to be able to switch back.

There's currently no player menu available. If there's some interest I
might enhance it.

Have fun!

Actually, a feature was added to the Squeezebox not very long ago to
allow an automatic firmware upgrades without any user intervention.
Unfortunately, this option must be set in the Squeezebox itself. That
requires using the remote, but once it's done, you never have to deal
with it again.

You're on the right track. Forward the two ports and also be sure that
you're using the right ip address for your computer at home: you'll
need to find your global IP address which is different from the local
one you're using on your home network (if you're trying to use an
address like 192.168.x.x to access your pc from work then that's not
the right one).

I am using DHCP and it is receiving a unique IP address and the router
sees the device as a wireless DHCP client.

The MAC address that the player displays in Current Settings is the
same as the one identified by my router as connected as well as matches
the sticker on the bottom.

> Did you have good wireless bandwidth and strength when it used to

The signal strength listed is 100% as since I am troubleshooting, it is
in the same room as the router. And I don't think it is a microwave /
cordless as this is persistent, regardless of their use. There are no
other wireless networks in the area of any noticeable signal strength.

> Does your router have a function that shows what wireless clients are
> connected and does it ever show the Squeezebox as connected?

The router does see the Squeezebox as connected. I am using WPA2
Personal, and nothing has changed on my network from when it worked
originally.

It is perplexing since I haven't changed anything recently, it goes
through the wireless connection steps without a problem, just hangs on
connecting.

Connecting the ethernet on the same network with the same server
works.

Thanks for your time and help.

Re: [slim] Connecting to Slimserver at Work

2007-03-12 Thread 4mula1

First off make sure there aren't any firewall settings that are
interfering with the connection. If you have port forwarding set in
your router (correctly) you either have a firewall problem or aren't
allowing hosts other than localhost to connect. I don't know exactly
where that setting is but somebody else will surely point you to you.

For listening to the stream.mp3 the only port you need open is 9000.
Be sure to point your media player to
http://your_ip_address:9000/stream.mp3 or it won't work.

If you want to setup an ssh tunnel it's not scary, but takes a little
bit of work. Google for OpenSSH for Windows and you'll find what you
need. There are some tutorials on how to configure it also. If you go
that route install SoftSqueeze at work and stream that way through the
SSH tunnel which SoftSqueeze can be configured for. That's how I do it
from work...

Good luck

[slim] Connecting to Slimserver at Work

2007-03-12 Thread BigTony

Dear All,

Having just become a convert to SS, I also would like to listen to
music at work. I have had a go browsing the forums, but I seem to have
spent a good few hours and I'm not really any nearer what it is I need
to do.

My Setup:

SS running on my PC at Home (Windows XP Media Center)
PC Connected to DSL router -> 8MB connection

SS runs fine in my home, all my local PC's run Softsqueeze.

I have tried to use winamp to play music via

http://My_Home_PC_IP/stream.mp3

but all I get a timeout on the connection.

If I try and look at SS from work via

http://My_Home_PC_IP:9000

I get an error Connection Refused

Things I 'think' in need to do :

Portforward 9000 (and the other port) to my router

Check blocked ports at work (22 is open 443 isn't)

I will try these things out, but is there anything else I need to do? I
read about an SSH tunnel - but that kinda sounds scary.

All help appreciated

BT

2007-03-12 Thread Mark Lanctot

It would come in handy in emergencies.

I searched bugzilla and couldn't find anything like this. The closest
was something that could help you right now, but it may not work
anymore:

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2970

which was a JVC DVD remote triggering a firmware update when pressing
and holding FF.

So it doesn't appear to be a duplicate, which is always the requirement
before putting something into bugzilla.

Typically SlimServer doesn't have access to the Squeezebox firmware
functions like this, but there is some access now at least:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33482 so I'll leave it
to the developers to comment on the feasibility. Firmware changes are
usually far-reaching and more difficult to implement than SlimServer
changes though.

Re: [slim] Radio Connection problems

2007-03-12 Thread bpa

It may be a firewall issues - with AlienBBC the connection to internet
comes from the PC. PC transcodes and relays audio to an SB. With
"native" radio such as MP3 and WMA - Slimserver arranages the
connection but the SB has to communicate directly with the radio
stations. It's possibel the firewall is blockign the SB from accessing
the internet.

Debug flags to try would be d_source and d_directstream.

[slim] Connecting to SlimServer... *stuck*

2007-03-12 Thread hajji

Hi all,

I have been using the SB3 for about 3 months now, on some derivation of
6.5.2.

Recently though the unit stops at "Connecting to SlimServer..." but
only when connecting through wireless.

If I plug the ethernet cable it, it works fine. Wireless, it gets an
IP as always, but when targetting the server it just hangs.

Any insight here? I have downgraded to 6.5.1 and updated the firmware
but with no luck.

Any help would be appreciated. Is there additional information that I
can provide that can help troubleshoot?

Re: [slim] slim.exe --d_startup? What does it say?

2007-03-12 Thread bpa

The message "here is already another copy of the SlimServer running on
this machine." is produced when slimserver cannot open UDP port 3483
and it is reasonable to assume that it is another slimserver but
slimserver does not in fact check the process list for "slim.exe".

If when you are trying to run slimserver and you get the "another copy
of Slimserver" messages - just check the ProcessExplorer main window on
the left hand side and see if there is a Slim.exe process running - and
if so who is the owning process.

If there is no Slim.exe running then you need to find out who is using
port 3483 and kill that process - it may be the SB is keeping the TCP
connection alive even though the "listening" process has died.

To find the process open a cmd prompt and issues the command "netstat
-ab" and look for port 3483

Re: [slim] How do I remove Slimserver completely?

2007-03-12 Thread ModelCitizen

If you can't delete mysqld.exe then the process mysqld.exe must almost
certainly be running. Have another look in Task Manager. Make sure you
are seeing all running processes. Kill it if/when you find it.

FYI (and any others):
To completely remove SlimServer 6.5.1 and 6.5.2 from Windows 2000/XP
etc it is best to:

* Stop the SlimServer process (right click on tray icon and select Stop
SlimServer).
* Remove Slimserver program via Windows Add/Remove Programs.
* Go to Task Manager and ensure that all slim related processes are not
listed (i.e. mysqld.exe, slim.exe or slimtray.exe). If any are listed
right click on them and select "End Process".
* Then go to your installation directory (by default: C:\Program
Files\SlimServer and delete it.

All done.

Note: The usual problem with deletion is that the Windows SlimServer
uninstal program has a bug and does not (cannot?) stop the MySQL daemon
and so the file mysqld.exe cannot be deleted and neither can the
directories containing it.

Re: [slim] How to upgrade firmware whitout using the remote control ?

2007-03-12 Thread Mark Lanctot

Haven't heard of any!

At first I was going to suggest to try a universal remote with a JVC
DVD player code, but that wouldn't have a brightness button.

Unfortunately you may have to order a replacement remote from here:
https://secure.slimdevices.com/order/upgrades.cgi It's not too
expensive but when you add shipping, duty, etc. it might be.

Re: [slim] slim.exe --d_startup? What does it say?

2007-03-12 Thread bpa

This error looks like somehting is wrong with DNS as well as Windows
thinking another slimserver running. This is in keeping with the
message you said that SlimTray thinks slimserver is running.

Does this error occur after rebooting your system ? If Yes then
install Www.sysinternals.com ProcessExplorer tool. It gives better
details on running processes and services. Using it check for a
slim.exe.

[slim] Radio Connection problems

2007-03-12 Thread yeomanspc

Hi.
I am running 6.5.2 (Mar 11 build) - installed because I was having
problems with 6.5.1. (not radio)

I can connect to shoutcast stations and to Alien BBC, but not to other
streams (for example SlimDevices picks from uk - like Radio 1 (but
works on Alien) or Virgin Radio). I am testing with Softsqueeze. Java
v11 installed.

Softsqueeze screen shows connecting, and cycles round. I have changed
connection timeout to 15 secs. Same symptoms on SB's too. Any ideas on
how I debug this - e.g. which debug flag(s) do I set on for starters.

Re: [slim] How do I remove Slimserver completely?

2007-03-12 Thread bpa

You should first stop slimserver via SlimTray or Service control panel.
Then Check in the Services control panel that Mysqld services is
stopped and disabled as SlimTray does not always stop the MySqld
service.
Then run the Slimserver uninstall
Then delete the Slimserver directory.
If you are brave you can then delete the remaining Slimserver entries
in the registry.

Something to try.

Check to see if the mysqld.exe process is still running. Stopping the
SlimServerMySQL service will stop it, otherwise use "End process" thru
Windows Task Manager to kill it.

Now delete the files.

Thanks Michael. However, my lossy and lossless collections do not
overlap. They live in separate directories under my top level music
directory. One called mp3 and once called flac. Slimserver is pointing
at the flac directory but it is picking up some albums from the mp3
directory as well. Don't even know why it should be looking there?

Consider it a feature not implemented yet. SlimServer can't handle
multiple format collections. See this other thread of today as well:

Re: [slim] albums listed twice

2007-03-12 Thread jimmy

Hi

Well, I found what is happening - looks like a bug to me:

I have 2 copies of my music stored on my terastation. One copy in flac,
the other in mp3. They are stored in different directories and i've set
the slimserver music folder to be the /flac directory. However, the
duplicate albums are where slimserver has (seemingly randomly) also
picked up the same version of the album from the mp3 directory...?!

I've done a complete music folder rescan and the problem is still
there. Anyone know how to fix this problem? Or is it a bug?

Many thanks
Jimmy

Maybe this makes some kind of sense, if Logitech's intention is to
retain the Slim Devices brand name for the Transporter (and other
future high-end devices). If they want to shift the Squeezebox in high
numbers through big chain stores, then the average man in the street
may well be happier with the Logitech brand they know than with this
unknown company "Slim Devices".

But if the intention is to also rebrand the Transporter as Logitech,
then I am convinced that would be a big marketing gaffe. Example: when
Philips owned Marantz in the 80s and 90s, they were fully aware of the
fact that the way to get their higher end stuff accepted in the
marketplace was to brand it as Marantz. Sales would have been much
lower with a Philips badge.
