WMA support was a biggy for me. Most local (Dutch) radiostations stream
in WMA format so that meant I could get rid of my radio tuners, just
SB's, amps and speakers, I like it that way. Simple and uncluttered...

I think the answer is pretty simple, it is no different to making your
albums available for distribution online or copying a cd to give to
someone else.

[slim] Is there a lawyer in the house?

2007-04-10 Thread Harry G

We all know its legal to copy the music you have to your kid's IPod and
that its not legal to upload it for the world pick up from a torrent
site.

Does anyone know for sure what the legal status is for giving some of
your music files to a friend?

I think everyone knows the drill. Friends come over, like what you do
with music from your Squeezebox and a few weeks later, you're helping
them get their Squeezebox configured.

In this situation, I'd really like to get the new owners started with
some music so they have something to listen to before they rip their
collection.

While I've wondered about this for awhile, I wouldn't ask here except
that our latest interested friend is in law enforcement. Its not that I
think he'd haul me away. Its that I just don't want a potentially
embarrassing situation. "Thanks for your generous offer but its a
federal offense". puts a real damper on dinner conversation.

Re: [slim] To upgrade or not to upgrade?

2007-04-10 Thread Mark Lanctot

There's also another thing which is hardly mentioned anymore - SlimDSP.

This means all the codecs are implemented in firmware. snarlydwarf
alludes to this, but its real power is that it's changeable. With the
SliMP3 and the SB1, it's a hardwired chip that can never and will never
change.

New codecs aren't added often and and they take up a lot of precious
firmware space that's apparently at quite a premium at the moment, but
the flexibility and capability is there.

[slim] 6.5.1 Can't Play Long Tracks?

2007-04-10 Thread rgmiller1974

Has anybody noticed a problem with 6.5.1 not being able to stream long
mp3 tracks?

I've got several audiobooks where I ripped an entire CD as one track,
so these are mp3 files that are ~60 minutes long. Everything was fine
on 6.5.0, but once I upgraded to 6.5.1 they won't play. The mp3 files
themselves haven't changed, and they still play fine through other
software players, so I'm guessing it's something with 6.5.1 or maybe
the firmware.

What happens specifically is that if I try to play one of these files,
the SB3 will show the track's title, but the timer won't start counting
(up or down), the spectrum analyzer graphics won't show anything and, of
course, no sound comes out. It looks to me like SlimServer wouldn't
actually stream the data.

Worse still, the SB3 (or maybe SlimServer) is apparently left in a
state where it won't play anything. The SB3 will respond to the remote
- I can clear the playlist and add other tracks, for example - but no
sound will come out when I try to play anything. I have to clear the
playlist and restart slimserver before the SB3 will work again.

I'm wondering if maybe the files are big enough to overflow a buffer
somewhere. FWIW: I can play a 46 minute track (ripped from a cassette
tape) just fine. Both the working 46 minute track and the non-working
60 minute one are 64kbps mp3 files. I haven't experimented with other
formats or anything like that.

Has anybody seen this problem before? Any ideas? I know SlimServer
has a bunch of command-line parameters that will output debugging info;
can someone tell me which ones I should run to get some more info about
what might be happening?

Thanks very much,
Ross Miller

BTW: I'm running SlimServer on Linux (OpenSUSE 10.2)

Re: [slim] Recommendation for linear power supply (interference with AM radio)

2007-04-10 Thread Max F

I've got the GlobTek and it works fine. One thing that I did notice was
that while all of the RF noise from the power supply is gone in the AM
freq. there still some noise coming out of the SB itself presumably
from the little switching supplys from within the SB. Not nearly as
loud as the powersupply though, so the improvement is significant and
worth it. Just be prepared for some leftover noise from the SB
internal switching supplies.

Re: [slim] Tune In Assistance Please

I found a post on another forum that showed that most CBS stations using
streamtheworld had a format

Code:

  http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/FMDIALUP.pls

Where is the station code. However this URL is not handled by all
media players but SB3 can.

So for WZLX use

Code:

http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/WZLXFMDIALUP.pls

Or for KROQ use

Code:

http://provisioning.streamtheworld.com/pls/KROQFMDIALUP.pls

Squeezenetwork is the big win. We use it to stream Rhapsody, and it's
awesome. If you're not going to subscribe to Rhapsody or Pandora, it's
not as useful, but if the subscription music services interest you,
Squeezenetwork is the best way to play them.

You should be able to get $100-150 for your Squeezebox v1 on eBay.

A much larger buffer (incredibly helpful for lossless files and even
more useful to get around wireless burps), support for more protocols
in firmware (WMA, Ogg, FLAC), support for Squeezenetwork (which gives
you access to things like Rhapsody and Pandora), etc etc etc...

This is a Flash-based stream. The audio data is embedded in the swf
file. URLSnooper doesn't show any auxiliary audio streams apart from
the Flash. I don't believe you'll be able to get the SqueezeBox to
play this directly.

I can listen using my web browser using:

mikesradioworld.com says pretty much the same thing:
javascript:wzlx=void(window.open('http://player.streamtheworld.com/CBS/?CALLSIGN=WZLXFM','wzlx','width=600,height=360,top=30,left=30'))

Strip out the code to open a new window, and the url is the same.

Can anyone help me with this?

2007-04-10 Thread Club1820

I was wondering if I disconnect the Squeezebox - will it still keep all
of its settings? I eventually plan on getting a second one, but until
then would like to be able to disconnect it and move it to another
stereo on occasion.

Thanks!

[slim] Connect to SqueezeNetwork from a script

2007-04-10 Thread andlauer

Hello,

I am trying to write a plugin to halt the slimserver: i would like this
script to:
1. connect all clients known to slimserver to SqueezeNetwork
2. turn off the client that launched the script
3. halt the server

I managed steps 2 and 3, but I do not seem to manage step 1. I tried
with Slim::Buttons:SqueezeNetwork::connectSqueezeNetwork($_) in a
foreach client loop.

Could anyone here help me out.

Thank you for support, and regards,

JC

Re: [slim] "do not use itunes" but link one album from itunes music?

2007-04-10 Thread roll - gybe

thanks guys, those are both good suggestions. i'll try unchecking the
songs first and see if i can work with that. if that doesn't work,
i'll resort to the flac method, which puts more demand on my storage.

Re: [slim] Debugging help re Vista m4a issue, please

2007-04-10 Thread bpa

Testing mov123 & Lame still has the common factor of the source file,
socketwrapper and mov123.

The problem needs to be isolated and see if it is associated with just
one of the source file, socketwrapper and mov123. Here are some of the
possibilities and associated conclusions.

If problem occurs when playing with QuickTime on Vista PC then problem
could be M4A file and/or QuickTime Libraries.

If problem occurs when playing a WMA file through SoftSqueeze then the
problem is socketwrapper / pipes related as there is no QuickTime or
m4a files in this scenario.

If problem does not occur when playing m4a files through mplayer - then
problem is with QuickTime.

[slim] [FEATURE REQUEST] pulseaudio / bonjour-avahi-rendezvous

2007-04-10 Thread alcor

Pulse Audio (www.pulseaudio.org) is a linux / win32 sound server that
will be the next "standard" linux sound server, if it is not already
the case! The server / sink / source system combined to
avahi/bonjour/rendezvous would be an impressive and very usefull
feature that could multiply the possibilities of the slimserver / SB
couple.

If this feature is done on the SB, this one could be used as direct
external sound card!!!
If this is done for the slimserver (probably easily?), it could :
- replace or simplify the software client to listen to the music on the
sink computer.
- permit to use the SB as an external sound card, via the slimserver
(latency and bp not optimal).

A first step that implement avahi/bonjour/zeroconf/mdns/... could be
very useful! launching the browser admin or the softsqueeze could be
very easy for all people connected to my network (think about
commercial application in hostels, etc)

PS : sorry if this had been already discussed but i didn't get result
by searching "pulseaudio".

when in standby ie. waiting for a signal to wake up.

I've looked around on the websites of the manufacturers and cant find

Thanks for the suggestion; I'll try that tonight. I just tried the
simple test of installing LAME 3.98 and selecting the mov123/lame
decoder in File Types, and that didn't work, either.

Re: [slim] Q: Access player from server when player is on SqueezeNetwork

2007-04-10 Thread Siduhe

You can access and control the player when it is on Squeezenetwork from
the SN webpage, including disconnecting from SN and reverting back to
your Slimserver.

At present, it isn't possible to control a player from SN via
Slimserver (although closer integration is planned for Slimserver7
AFAIK).
