Hi,
great idea and thank you for your effort.
Maybe I get something wrong but is it possible to set the Slimserver ip
, user and password to control a remote Slimserver (ie still on my LAN
but not the PC where the extension runs).
Thank you.

[slim] Slow SqueezeBox 3 power-up

2007-05-14 Thread SumnerBoy

Hi, I have noticed my SB3's (I have two, one wired and one wireless) are
taking a long time (30-60secs) to startup when pressing the Power button
on my remote - i.e. going from standby to ON.

I got the latest 6.5.2 nightly build last week to make sure I had the
latest code, but it is still a problem. It seems to be worse when
starting up 'cold'. Once started, I can switch from standby and back
again instantly.

I *think* the slow down may coincide with the purchase of my second SB3
(the wireless one in my bedroom). Is this likely? Is this a known
problem? Is there anything I can do to improve things, as it is very
frustrating when you want to listen to some music and you have to wait
up to a minute before anything responds.

NOTE: the delay is the same on both wired and wireless devices.

I don't think so. I rather presume your server either being slow or gone
to power saving mode. Once the box is powered up, can you power off/up
with no delay at all or is it always that slow?

What's your server specification?

Agree with Deadkenny on Parcelforce. On one occasion they put a card
through someone else's door and then sent the package back to Hawaii
when I did not collect it. Needless to say they sent it back surface
mail but it did arrive back with the maker, three months later.

My UPS package (a Sutherland Ph.d phono stage) referred to earlier
arrived today. UPS rang me on Friday and took customs payment via CC
over the phone - 23% of price - ouch!

Happily I have been able to find a Transporter in the UK - ordered
Friday, here this morning. Excellent service from Media Home.

Re: [slim] DVD files

The audio would have to be ripped into a format SlimServer could
understand - WAV, for example. There are both Windows and Linux
programs that can do this. You can even get SlimServer to pass the
files through digitally as Dolby Digital or DTS files to a receiver,
search the forum.

If you're trying to play back DVD audio while watching the DVD video on
another device that would be impossible due to synchronization issues.

Re: [slim] Mbridge - Possible WIFI tablet remote

2007-05-14 Thread shadowboxer

The handheld skin is optimized for the handheld 320x240 resolution, I
believe, and should work.

I am intrigued by this little device, especially the price point! But,
I can't seem to find any data on what, if any, kind of web browser is
included. It does appear to be linux based, like the nokia and the
pepperpad, but is a heck of a lot cheaper.

I found the following in a press release from the company:

8/21/06 - At San Francisco Linux World Expo Unicon Systems is
introducing the first wireless mobile chip-on-film Linux computer,
based on ARM9 embedded CPU running full blown Linux 2.6 and attached to
the back of a 3.5 touch screen. It is equipped with multiple
connectivity options including two 2.0 high-speed USB host ports and
WiFi, and can be used to create new handheld devices for industrial,
security, educational and medical applications, as well as various
mobile consumer electronics products

Here is a link to a pic of the innards:

http://www.linuxdevices.com/files/misc/unicon_system-on-display.jpg

Unfortunately, the device is not in stock I went ahead and
pre-ordered one purely for use as a digital photo repository. Sounds
pretty cool.

Yes it does via additional software, MediaServer and MediaClient.

The MediaClient sits on a client PC and the NevoSL can be used to
select the source from the server and play it out on that PC client.

What I'd like is to get the NevoSL to use SlimServer as the source and
the Squeezeboxes as the clients.

[slim] Displaying Now Playing information in web page

2007-05-14 Thread dborn

Is there a way, using an existing plugin or otherwise, to display the
Now Playing data for the currently playing track in a nice and
appealing format with all the music related information present such
that it could be displayed on a computer screen and be visible from a
distance?

Something similar to Michael Herger's Album Review plugin but using
only the local information?

This page would not have any buttons or controls, just for display
purposes.

I wouldn't want to see info such as bitrate or filesize or date
modified. I imagine a page with the cover art followed by title, album,
artist, genre, perhaps comment. Having the ability to specify which
field to use and in which order would also be nice.

I've gone through the slimserver technical information pages and I
don't see anything that would do what I want. I haven't found any
plugins that would do this either. I know that there is an issue of
catching a track change from a web page (how to get a dynamic update of
tracks?)

I was thinking of maybe using Michael's plugin and modifying it to do
this but was just wondering if anybody had done it already.

Thanks,
Daniel

Not sure if you're asking if it can display Asian fonts, or if you are

questions are available pretty easily by searching the forums.

A recent thread which gives a basic explanation is 'here'

More detailed explanation is in the ReadMe folder after you install
Slimserver.

Or is there a specific query or point you've got stuck at? If so, the
minimum details that people will need are:

What OS(Windows/Mac/Linux)?
What version SB (1/2/3/Transporter)?
What version of the firmware (6.3.1/6.5.1/6.5.2/something else)?

I've actually gotten it to pass a digital out from my XM receiver, but
you MUST switch the Transporter to look at your digital input source as
the CLOCK source, too. This option is ONLY available on the web
interface under the Transporter Player Settings:Audio. When you're
done 'passing' audio, you need to change the CLOCK source back to
INTERNAL.

Slim REALLY needs to have this option accessible from the front panel,
IMHO.

thanks for the answers, although here is what my girlfriend (not me I

1) Don't like what I listen to
2) Stop it : Hold pause
3) Clear it :
4) Add new songs
5) Shuffle
6) Shuffle again until 1st song is THE ONE
7) Play

So far we only miss step number 3 and if we don't clear the playlist we
can't really shuffle in 5+6 with the hope that it will choose a good
starting song...
Any thoughts...?

Re: [slim] Slow SqueezeBox 3 power-up

2007-05-14 Thread Mark Lanctot

I have observed this as directly proportional to server load and CPU.
When I temporarily ran on a slower server, startup was slower, but only
2 or 3 seconds total.

30-60 seconds is a huge delay. What's the CPU load on your server?

Re: [slim] Slow SqueezeBox 3 power-up

2007-05-14 Thread SumnerBoy

I have a high end server, Pentium D 3.2GHz with 4GB of RAM. The load is
minimal - the only time there is any sort of load is when I am working,
during the day. Anytime I am trying to listen to music, the server is
idle.

Is there any logging I can turn on to track the client start up timings
etc?

Re: [slim] SB3 chokes on 24/96

2007-05-14 Thread MrD

I have the read the Bug 1394 report. I see that the newer SB firmware,
downsamples a 96khz signal.

I am trying to play some linn 24/96 flac files on my SB3 (firmware 81).
The sound is normal, but, I get a lot of stutter with these files. The
SB3 is hooked up via the analog connections (i.e. I am using the SB3
DAC).

Should the SB3 be able to play these flac files correctly?

NB these files play fine on my transporter, as expected.

Re: [slim] SB3 chokes on 24/96

2007-05-14 Thread Ron F .

This has been discussed to some degree in the audiophile thread (Linn
Records now doing Flac)
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34985

Bascially, you can play 24/96 flac files on the SB3 if you recode
them in real-time as compression-level-0 as they are streaming. See
comment #10 in bug #4886.

While this essentially works, I feel the performance is worse than the
same material playing at 16/44.1 if using an SB3. I find the noise
floor rises considerably as a result of the way the SB3 down-samples a
96kHz stream to 48 kHz.

I would down-sample the file using Audacity to 48 kHz and stream that
result to the SB3.

Re: [slim] Chinese SB3?

2007-05-14 Thread ipy

Thanks both for this. I should have been more specific. I ripped my CDs
into Flac using EAC by doing so, the Chinese characters are not
converted into a readable format in SB3. Thinking a bit more, it might
be more a EAC/Flac issue rather than a Slimserver one. Any help on
fixing this will be appreciated as well.

I have been using an older version of Slimserver 6.2.1. I have a SB3
using Window XP OS (home verison).

Cheers,
Ian

6.2.1 is too old. In order to handle non-latin characters, you'll need
6.2.2 or newer.

Re: [slim] SB3 chokes on 24/96

2007-05-14 Thread MrD

Thanks!

Yep, I tried the convert.conf thing and the SB3 plays appropriately.

There *is* an audible hiss in the material, however during quiet
passages, I am not sure if this is in the source or not.

I would have to compare it with my transporter.

[slim] APE problem

2007-05-14 Thread steinwaytony

My APE files won't even play with APE--FLAC or APE--WAV.

When I enable ONLY APE--MP3 (LAME), there is a terrible hissing /
white noise sound and hardly any music is audible.

I've searched the forums for this problem, and found one thread, but it
doesn't appear to have been solved.

I've upgraded to the latest Slimserver, as well as the latest LAME.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: [slim] SB3 chokes on 24/96

2007-05-14 Thread Ron F .

MrD,

I think you will likely find that the hiss you hear will not be present
when the same file is played through your transporter.

I suspect the SB3 firmware lacks an adequate decimation filter for
receiving a 96 kHz stream, (I suspect maybe there is none at all) ...
maybe there is not enough room in the SB3 for such an addition?

Cliston,

I have been using DVD Audio Ripper V.4.0 with pretty good results. I
then convert the resulting WAV files to FLAC using DBpowerAMP.

first, look for the convert.conf file. It should be located where you
installed slimserver.
Open that up with your favourite text editor (use wordpad instead of
notepad if you are on windows)
Find the line:

ape mp3 * *

remove the '-x' from the line following, save and close. Restart the
server and see if that helps.

For streaming in the other formats, go into server settings-debugging
and check d_source.
Find the link for the log at the end up the description text near the
top of the page, click on that to open a view of the log.

Watch the log when you try to play using the -FLAC or -WAV options.
See if there are any errors reported. If you have trouble interpreting
the log, you can paste sections of it here.

cheers,
kdf

Re: [slim] Slow SqueezeBox 3 power-up

2007-05-14 Thread SumnerBoy

I tried turning on debugging for d_client and d_startup but there didn't
seem to be anything obvious in the logs. There is no dates or times in
the logs either, so difficult to work out where a delay may be
occuring.

I just tried to fire up both SB3's after them being powered down all
day. My server was idle, but was not in standby - I had just finished
working on it.

Both SB3's (wired and wireless) took 10secs to startup.

Can anyone else offer any suggestions on how to diagnose this problem?
