Re: [slim] dual-core CPU usage
I am not very good at quoting previous posts :-) and no, I definiately do not want slimserver to load 99.9% of both cores and then the OS struggle to get some processing power. I just asked this from the perspective if it was by design to always use ~50% of the available precessing capacity. Multithreading in the scanning process is most likely is used, i.e. scanning more than one audio file at the same time. The scanning itself is indeed only one process but I think the number of threads are not directly adjustable, unless one digs deep in the code maybe... but I am no expert... overall, I certainly like the responsiveness and speed of SS on a C2D processor, this is by far exceeds the experience compared to NSLU2, AMD K5 450Mhz, Celeron 900 Mhz I previously used. -- Lleo_ Lleo_'s Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3271 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36030 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Odd web gui behavior
I recently added a bunch of albums. One of them doesn't show up in the web ui, but does when I use the sb3 interface directly. It's a flac file, all of the tags look ok, there aren't any non-ascii characters in the filenames, dirnames, or tags. While trying to figure this out, I noticed that my jazz genre cuts off a bunch of artists at the end of the alphabet. The last artist listed on the web interface is William Parker, but there are definitely artists occurring later in the alphabet (it was a Wolfgang Muthspiel record that caused me to notice this). Very odd. I'm using 6.5.1 still: I was early on that one, and experienced a lot of teething problems, so I've been hesitant to upgrade. Has anyone else seen anything like this? Think the latest release would fix it? While on the subject of odd behavior, the compound sort on artist/album seems strange, as well. I would expect the ordering to be (in pseudo-code, using early returns to get the desired behavior) int compare (x, y) { return 1 if x.artist > y.artist return -1 if y.artist > x.artist // x.artist == y.artist return 1 if x.album > y.album return -1 if y.album > x.album //they're both the same return 0 } This is definitely NOT what is happening in my setup. If I'm on the Bs, and I click the next link, I end up somewhere in the Ms (all I can think is that the compound sort intended is different than the above, or there is a bug here). -- totoro squeezebox 3 -> mccormack dna .5 -> audio physic tempo 4 totoro's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5935 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36038 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] FLAC Streaming
Hi, I have SlimServer running on an Infrant ReadyNAS connecting to a Squeezebox 3. Most of my music is FLAC and I was noticing occasional performance problems (stutter with rebuffering). Digging into the SlimServer settings, I saw that under file types, FLAC was both available as FLAC (built-in) stream and as WAV stream. I tried disabling the WAV stream to force FLAC streaming and to avoid any transcoding, but then I couldn't listen to any of my FLACs any more. Now my question is: Shouldn't the Squeezebox 3 natively support FLAC? How can I find out what format is being used for streaming? <> Actually they're already on sale in John Lewis - the store in Reading has had the all-black version on show for several months - whenever I go in there I turn it on and get something playing, as it doesn't seem to get much attention from the staff. However they reckon they've sold "loads". It's displayed in the computer part of the store (next to the Macs), well away from the audio stuff - maybe a good choice given the likely buyers? The JL website also has them. The guy in Reading Audio-T (where I bought my Aego Ms) was quite interested in what I thought, but seemed to have enough problems selling Sonos (or was it Roku?) systems and didn't seem to relish the after-sales challenges of sorting out Slimserver install quirks. The other big spectre in using Curry's / DSG for distribution is the fate of the Psion Wavefinder, which whatever it's issues still has no direct equivalent - in my view DSG were completely unable to sell and support the thing. The only bright spot is that there should be some pretty tasty discounts if and when DSG end up clearing their stock (I did a very good deal on the remaining Wavefinders in my local Dixons when they reached end of line). Whatever - I wish you luck. At the end of the day the only hope of volume sales in the UK is to distribute through DSG (and maybe Comet) and if you can pull off the trick of getting them to understand how to shift it without alienating all of the existing channels then you have a great future. Re: [slim] Audiophile wishlist
I just bought an external DAC. There are many in the $250 to $1000 range - new and used - that represent an improvement over the built-in DAC. The power supply replacement is also very easy (though I'll confess I found it made no difference for me.) I actually did the trial run with with Transporter and returned it. For me, the SB3 with an external DAC (Lavry DA10) sounded the same for a little over half the cost. (Also, like you, I preferred the size and styling of the SB3. The Transporter was just a bit too big and "too much" for my tastes.) I'm sure the people at Slim Devices have examined the possibility of a mid-point Squeezebox very carefully. Like any additional product in a line it'd have disadvantages for them along with advantages. (Disadvantages like siphoning off sales that would have otherwise been a Transporter, extra inventory to manage that might not result in a cost effective increase in sales, etc.) Who knows what they'll do, but I'd be a bit surprised if they added a product in the middle. I'd suspect they are looking for ways to simplify the computer end of things to make it more user friendly. I think Slimserver is more of a hurdle for their market penetration than the Squeezebox/Transporter issue. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36022 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] dual-core CPU usage
It's certainly the case for my E6600 using Ubuntu 7.04 64-bit. I don't think perl can take advantage of dual cores. The only thing you can do is Server Settings - Performance - Webserver Forking: > To avoid stalling the main process, certain web pages can be handled by > a child process. This will most benefit players with small buffers such > as Squeezebox1 which can experience audio dropouts while using the web > interface. It will also provide smoother scrolling and IR response > while accessing the web interface. But since the Core 2 Duos keep one core idle when scanning anyway, it will just use that core if it needs to while the other handles scanning. [slim] dual-core CPU usage
Hi All, After using slimserver on a number of low-power devices, like nslu and others, I built a server to host both the music and run slimserver among other functions. The specs of the server are: Core Duo 2 E6300, 2GB of memory, ~1TB of RAID5 storage. The server is also used as NAS. I have Ubuntu 7.04 Server as OS and everything works just fine. I use the webinterface a lot, and I like how snappy now is. What I noticed and my question relates to this: when slimserver scans for music or the webinterface is used extensively, it only uses one of the two CPU cores. Even if one of the cores is loaded to 100%, the other one is 99.9% idle for most of the time. Is this by design or something is wrong with my intallation? Re: [slim] PSU - Is it worth changing it?
If you type 'linear supply' into the search box and scroll through nine pages of posts, you'll see one at the bottom titled super regulator measurements by Sean Adams*, in which he says a linear supply is more likely to improve (the measured pk-pk jitter of) the digital output more so than the analog output. Whether this is audible or not is up for debate, but using a Denon surround receiver will certainly be a different story than with a silver-wired Audio Note DAC in a $100K system. I.e., OP, it's a waste of money for you, if you're not getting interference, IMHO. I used a Power One 5-3 for a long time until the transformer started getting noisy. Then I switched back to the supplied wall wart for the last six months and haven't felt I've been missing anything. There's been a Sola silver series 5-3 on my desk for a month that I got new for 9.99 on ebay, so whatever you do don't spend a fortune. *disclaimer: circuit changes in Sb3 and SD's acquisition of better measurement equipment may not provide a fair comparison to this rather dated thread. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=15201&highlight=linear+supply -- Skunk Skunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36015 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Audiophile wishlist
Hello All, I post here (and not in the Audiophile section), because I think it's a general issue. I know that there are many mods to improve the SB's sound. On my part I have no knowledge/time to do it myself, and I am not really willing to let my SBs be teared up by other hands than Slimdevices'. So, why not prepare a *premium* version of the SB, incorporating all mods and priced half way to the Transporter? I admit I won't go for the Transporter because I love *sooo much* the SB looks, but I would be interested to improve the sound. I wonder if I'm alone here... cheers, -GianLuca -- gian gian's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6702 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36022 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If it's Currys that are selling the Squeezebox then I wouldn't be counting on big sales if I was Logitech (equivalent store in the US is probably BestBuy). The people who work in these stores are technically incapable of selling a product like Sqeezebox - the staff struggle with fridges and tv's! I was looking to buy a tv a few weeks ago and thought I'd pop into one of their stores to see what the tv was like - the guy who attempted to help me had convinced himself that the tv didn't have freeview and that the only way I could get freeview on it was to hook up my laptop to it! -- killie99 Primare D30.2 CD player, MF 24/96 DAC, MF A1000 Amp, Impulse H2 speakers oh, and an SB3 killie99's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8337 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35899 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

You've made a very good point there. Even if the salesperson DOES manage to convince the customer that streaming music via their home network is the way forward, then the next challenge is to convince them to spend £200 on a Squeezebox when they could buy two Philips Streamium SLA5520 Wireless Music Adapters and still have change. Aah, my misunderstanding. I would have thought that you'd use a Squeezebox at home on your main system (this being a Slim Devices forum and all). Re: [slim] New (Logitech) Squeezebox
I disagree. TiVo can control Sky and Freeview boxes, and once they're set up, the user doesn't even have to worry about the medium over which any given channel is transmitted; they all appear in the same EPG and the unit selects between sources automatically. Freeview wasn't really an issue at the time anyway - cable and satellite were the usual sources and it handles those just fine. In fact, TiVo's ability to integrate with external video sources was just one of the features that put it streets ahead of most other recorders at the time. I guess that goes to confirm my point - great product, shame just how few potential customers realised quite what it could do. -- AndyC_772 AndyC_772's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10472 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35899 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

So you had 5 channels and a lack of a decent EPG. I believe there was also a subscription element to it as well. Re: [slim] PCM, 16bit, 24bit, 44.1khz, 48khz...
The Audigy probably sounds better at 48kHz as it works internally at 96kHz. Therefore, when playing a CD and outputting 44.1, it upsamples to 96 then downsamples to 44.1. If you get it to output to 48, 96 to 48 is a more transparent process than going to 44.1, so will probably sound better. Upsampling is generally a bad idea. You can't add information that's not there; it can add an illusion of detail but what does that mean? Saying that, I have heard dcS kit upsampling to 24/192 sound great. Either way, upsampling to 48 will make little improvement but quite some detriment. Changing the bit depth is pointless - your DAC probably does this anyway. You can try using DBPowerAmp or (I think) Audacity to perform changes to sample rate and bit depth on your FLAC files - see what you think! Good point, but I'll be listening to this at home on my main stereo as much as anywhere else, and probably never in a "noisy" environment. Actually, I'm never in a noisy environment. Listening to music in a randomized order will be a uniquely enjoyable experience that I wouldn't expect to be deprived of just because I happen to be home. In fact I expect to get most enjoyment out of it at home. I know larger devices designed for the home are available, but I would expect the sansa e200 to provide a comparable experience, with the added and not insignificant benefit of being portable, at a much lower cost. -- NauticusLX NauticusLX's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8981 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35991 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] PCM, 16bit, 24bit, 44.1khz, 48khz...
Hi, Sorry for the thread overload this morning *blush*. At the moment I have my SB3 connected to my Sony AV receiver with Digital Coax and I noticed when the SB3 starts playing my Sony says PCM 44khz on the display. Looking at the specs of the Sony it can accept upto 96khz. >From the SB3 specs: Sample rates: 44.1Khz, 48Khz Audio format: linear PCM, 16 or 24 bits per sample I am not an expert on this but in Windows Vista my Audigy 2 ZS can be configured to set sample rates and bit rate outputs regardless of the actual source music. (It defaulted to 16bit at 44100hz, when I changed to 24bit and 48000hz there was a noticable improvement in the sound quality [or maybe it was snake oil :)]. Is it possible to do this with the SB3? Will it make a difference? Re: [slim] PSU - Is it worth changing it?
Have a look in the Audiophiles board, you will find more threads on this topic there that you can count! Probably better to pick up one of those than to start yet another one... In summary, there are those who say that changing the PSU has made a massive difference, others who swear that this is snake oil and does nothing at all. The official Slim position is that changing the PSU makes no measureable difference to the SBs output. One possible explanation for the differing results (apart from the usual subjectivity and placebo effect explanations) is that the stock PSU goes generate a significant amount of electrical noise which may find its way into, and subsequently upset, other audio components in your setup such as the amplifier. Forecasting which such devices are likely to be upset is probably impossible, so experimentation is required in each case. One general principle applies at all times, however: if you like the sound of what you have, why change it?
