interesting, sounds like a great idea for a plugin.

i actually am not a good person to answer this, but in another thread i
was trying to find out if setting exclusions for ss exe files in my

but i have no answers...

Re: [slim] broken firmware 81?

2007-09-27 Thread gautscho

It happens when i listen to different internet radio streams with
squeezenetwork or to local mp3s with slimserver!

I tested it with wireless and wired, same problem.

Now i downgraded to a previous firmware and i have no problem anymore.
I use the wireless connection again without drop outs.

Seems to be a bug in firmware 81!

Cheers
Marc

Re: [slim] Library Scanning engine

2007-09-27 Thread ob_kook

Sorry if I was being vague.

The beta software was a performance acceleration tool which dedicates a
portion of the system memory for I/O cache together with a predictive
algorithm for doing prefetching of data. The net effect is that in most
databases and other I/O intensive applications, a 3-4x performance
improvement is often observed. (It is a well known fact that in most
applications, the performance bottleneck lies at the disk.)

Since mileage varies depending on systems and applications (for
example, there would not be any improvement at all if the disk was
*not* the bottleneck), I was curious if the slow library scans would be
affected or not. And as a matter of fact, I did install the tool and saw
huge improvments in many applications, but I did not do any specific
testing against the library scans - just a subjective seat-of-the-pants
feel of "yup, that's faster..."

This was all done quite some time ago, and I forgot about the tool and
left it installed. Yesterday we announced release of the product, and
that jogged my memory, so I did a search on the forums, and did not see
as many posts about slow scans as I was expecting. I was curious if this
is an issue that has been "fixed" or not.

I plan on running tests again collecting empiricle data, but I'm
travelling for the next 3 weeks and therefore am left to muse.

i use avast, and i set exclusions for slim and scanner.

i'm hoping it makes my scans quicker.

i don't see the *.myi or myd files, where/what are they and should i
set exclusions for them as well?

are they dbase files? if not, are there dbase files it would make
sense to exclude?

assuming the slim.exe file i excluded is itself virus free, is there
any other danger in excluding it, such as it manipulating virus laden
files?

Re: [slim] SS wont play internet radio - Snetwork does.

2007-09-27 Thread The Witchdoctor

The thing that often helps is to simply restart your computer. If that
doesn't work, restart your modem and/or router. This can often solve
the problem, particularly if you are logging into multiple networks
during the day. Give it a shot and see what happens.

BTW, this only applies if your Internet Radio was working fine and then
suddenly stopped for no apparent reason. If it's never worked from the
beginning, then it's a different story.

Yes, wireless. D-Link DWL-2100AP. Streaming only Flac. When it first
happened it seemed like a particular song was causing the problem and it
would always reboot at about the same point in the song. But later I
was able to go back and play the song without incident. Once it gets
into a dropout/reboot cycle it seems to stay there until you stop
playing music.

Actually I think that I'm not going to pursue this any more because
it's not too much of an issue for me and it happens so randomly. I
started this thread just wondering if this was a common problem. I was
trying to set up some more debug logging as you suggested but the
scanner crashed twice but on the third time it ran. It seems that it
never starts right and crashes or finishes to completion. Since the
rescan works every time and I seldom do a full scan it doesn't really
matter to me. That being said, how do I delete the MySQL cache and
tables? If it's simple maybe I'll give it a try.

This is what I am hoping if SD will not warranty it, because...

I have a spare AP which has client mode which I can plug in to the
ethernet port. Not as cool, but hopefully it will work well enough (or
even better than the built in wireless hmmm... 9dbi antenna!) in or
behind the cabinet... The problem with this is my gf used to plug into
the ethernet port when she worked from home and she has no built in
wireless... more retraining.

Would probably be the cheaper/easer/less-risky route for you (Glennmcb)
to do this.

Out of interest, did anyone who has experienced the dead SB3 thing also
start having mysterious wireless problems a few months beforehand as
well, e.g. SB restarting for no apparent reason etc after being stable
for months/years?

[slim] Library Scanning engine

2007-09-27 Thread ob_kook

Has this changed much over the past couple of major Slimserver releases?

I recall there was a time when there was a multitude of threads on this
forum with questions and complaints about long scanning times for large
libraries, but I don't seem to see that many now.

The reason I ask is that I also noticed extremely long scan times in
the past and addressed the problem with a self learning predictive I/O
scheduler and cache engine which my company had in beta and which an
engineer was kind enough to provide to me.

It certainly helped the situation, but now I am not sure if there were
other external factors such as the version changes which came into play
as well or not.

Anyone know?

As the guy who started this thread, I couldn't agree more. Though I did
end up returning the unit for repair, being able to get interpretations
of my symptoms and suggestions for things to try here was very useful,
and helped me rule out quite a few more-trivial possible causes.

Since the title I chose for this thread is rather downbeat, I
considered it important to add the "happy ending". My experience
wouldn't discourage me from buying more Squeezeboxes or a Transporter
(just our house layout, my ungilded ears (SB3 sounds fine to me, don't
feel I need anything better); oh, and my wallet :-))

[slim] Internet Radio Not Working

2007-09-27 Thread The Witchdoctor

Hi Everyone,

I have had lots of difficulties getting internet radio to work,
particularly the
"radioio network" or stations. But last night, I noticed that
virtually none of the internet radio stations worked. And I also
noticed that they ALL had completely different URL's than the day
before. Has anything changed on the Slimserver side of things that's
causing difficulty in logging on to many of the internet radio
stations? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, btw, I am using an Apple iBook with OS 10.4.10 and Slimserver 6.5.5
and the latest firmware version.

Re: [slim] Amazon MP3 store beta

2007-09-27 Thread dem

I've bought about 50 songs since yesterday to fill gaps in some of my
playlists. It works quite well, and of course the files work fine on
the SB3.

With iTunes, I had to burn, re-rip, re-encode, and re-tag a track to
free it from DRM, which was a real pain. iTunes Plus make this
somewhat easier.

The biggest problem I've had with Amazon so far is that every song
purchase results in a separate charge to your credit card, and
apparently my card provider limits me to around 20 charges a day. You
also get a confirmation mail for each purchase, which is a pain.
Amazon needs to batch up charges and confirmation messages like iTunes
does.

Re: [slim] IR Blaster - Basic Question

2007-09-27 Thread MelonMonkey

I'll be using compatible IR blasters with my software products and
already do worldwide shipping for compatible hardware.

If anyone needs IR blasters send me a PM. They should be listed on my
site within two weeks. Shipping to international destinations will be
nominal (read: pretty cheap).

My experience is that the quality is very good and that we are merely
seeing a biased sample. How many people bother posting that everything
is fine?

Also, most reasonable people report that the SD/Logitech service has
been good even in the event of a faulty unit.

If you decide you want one, I would not worry about the quality. FWIW,
I just bought my third SB3.

Toast is a great disc burning/backup/tivo tool, burns audio CDs directly

Yes it is possible, although not advised. Firmware versions are only
tested with their respective SlimServer/SqueezeCentre releases.

You should be able to find the method by searching about if you are

I'm running SlimCenter 7.xxx. Its beta, but its clearly part of the
future. More than an idea.

SlimDevices has never commented on future products. No reason to expect
them to start.

There is a public forum about Jive, Jive remotes, etc. Might give some
folks a clue, but there is no commitment to actually release Jive in any
form similar to what it is now.

I'd bet serious money that there will be a post-SB3, maybe even called a
SB4, maybe called a Aardvark. No clue as to what it would look like, do,
etc.

Make sure that you've used the setting for Atwork AND Artwork thumbnail
(if you use SS7, you only need the one) and then done a FULL wipe and
rescan. thumbnails are only collected after a full scan. This is a
requirement in order for the variable naming to work (one possible
future is for this to go away simply because requiring a full scan in a
pitb). Also, try the d_artwork (or set artwork = DEBUG for SS7) to set
the logging to show the artwork finding process.

Patches welcome, oh and don't forget every other personal
implementation that a user might want. It's a lot harder than you might
think. Then again, the SS requirements for artwork not all that
restrictive compared to much of what is out there.

A lot of development effort is going into Jive at the moment and SS 7.x
is needed to support Jive.

It has been stated that Jive desktop will take over from Softsqueeze

Jive has the potential to support a new generation of displays.

I have tried now a lot of different formats none is working. I think I
have to rename the whole bunch. Total Commander has a good rename tool
build-in.

Anyway I don't understand why it is not implemented to scan for a
filename with variable and fixed letters.
Is it so hard to scan for "front" somewhere in the filename?
And if it finds "front" in the front, middle or end of the filename
than it takes that jpeg as albumart.

As KDF suggested, having both fixed and variable componentes to the

If you do need to re-name a bunch of files, there are some good third

Is there not a wild string like in windows ** search everything

So SlimServer should look for any .jpg file with front somewhere in

Re: [slim] Album covers

2007-09-27 Thread funkstar

if the file is named "front.jpg" then the entry in Artwork should be
"front.jpg"

"%front" is telling SlimServer you want to use the -variable- called
"front" but there isn't one.

either have all your covers named " - .jpg" and have the
artwork enrty "%artist - album". Or name them all the same, "folder.jpg"
for example.

[slim] Any ideas for the future?

2007-09-27 Thread Seineseeker

I read this forum regularly. I bought my first SB3 nearly 2 years ago, I
bought a second one about 9 months ago, even though I felt sure there
could be a newer one out any time soon. But no. We are even still on
6.* Slimserver.

Will there be an SB4 at some point? What are those Slim guys up to?

That's true - competitive markets in action! But for $8.99, I'd rather
buy the CD (new or used) and have the lossless files. Sooner or later
the market is going to realize mp3 is compromised, and pricing is going
to reflect that (I hope..).
Actually, you can already see this at zunior.com, a small Canadian
music site - flac albums are $2.00 more than mp3.

[slim] Why isn't the bar at the back of the SB3 hinged?

2007-09-27 Thread NeilF

I really thought when I got this thing the bar would pivot a bit so you
could angle the unit from vertical to say about 45 degrees?

In my case, as it's up on a bookshelf, I want it vertical...

Re: [slim] IR Blaster - Basic Question

2007-09-27 Thread jordi . c

Hello Guys,

My Pioneer VSX-D510 amp. has a control out for connecting other pioneer
components (e.g. cd-player).

I have scanned the information of this "control out" from the manual.

[image: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w199/jordicc/IRBLaster.png]

Can anybody tell me if I can put two male jacks. The IR emitter I'm
using at the moment is pretty ugly though.

hi Kdf,

Thanks for your suggestion. I tried %front in both lines.

[image: http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w199/jordicc/slim1.png]

When I add the folder to the playlist it shows the cover :).

Only in this screenshot you see there is no albumart on the folder (in
the left screen) :(

Re: [slim] Scanner.exe crashes when rescanning everything

2007-09-27 Thread oreillymj

It sounds like a corrupt file that the scanner doesn't like or a
shortcut causing a loop, but the Autocommit does sound like a MySQL
issue.

My suggestions.

1) Enable more debug options like d_scan to figure out if the crash
always happens on a certan file/directory.

or

2) Maybe you should delete the MySQl cache and tables and let
Slimserver rebuild everything.

[slim] Transporter wake on lan -problem

2007-09-27 Thread Jarmo Toivanen

Just bought new Tranporter, however I have difficulties to have wake on
lan working. My Squeezebox3 still works fine. This new Tranporter does
not wake up my Mac at all. If the SlimServer is down, powering up the
Tranporter just usually shows network setup menu. It looks like it's
somehow forgets network settings, even I can find valid configuration
from the menu.

Any suggestions where to start look? Had reset Transporter already to
factory defaults. I use ethernet connection.

Ideally you would have avoided mixed formatting (variable AND fixed
components)
However, you could try "%ARTIST - ALBUM - front" as the format. The
server adds .jpg
and I believe it should take the 'folder' part as static text when it
doesn't match a variable.

the key is that you only need to start with % to trigger the variable
checking code. No closing %
is required.

Re: [slim] Album covers

2007-09-27 Thread jordi . c

Hi Funkstar,

I hope TS don't bother I hop in his topic :-D

Last week I have scanned all my cd covers with the scanner. I gave the
front cover the name "ARTIST - ALBUM - front.jpg". The problem is I
don't see any covers after a full rescan.

I tried;
%front%.jpg
front.jpg
%ARTIST - ALBUM% - front.jpg

I don't know what format else I can try.

Just of the top of my head...
Pro tag:
You can have different artwork per file
the artwork goes wherever your files go

Con Tag:
file sizes are larger for each file

Pro folder.jpg:
windows explorer gives you nifty folder icons when you browse the
filesystem
less overall drive usage with just one file per album

For best universal support, my own setup has artwork in tags, a
folder.jpg, cover.jpg (fastest find for slimserver when tags fail), then
a 100x100 cover.bmp so that I get cover art on my Sansa E260 using
the rockbox firmware.

[slim] Album Art: - Tags vs Files?

2007-09-27 Thread Skittler

I currently have all my album art in folder.jpg files.

What are the pros/cons of holding the album art in FLAC/MP3 tags
compared to using the folder.jpg method?

BTW, I use Mp3Tag as my weapon of choice for tagging.

This might already be possible with Erland's TrackStat plugin. You
can rate the FLAC files
high and mp3 files low. It then allows you to browse by rating.
What I don't know is if you can
set it up to show lower rated versions if nothing higher rated is
found with the same title/artist/album info.

My own setup, I have a music folder with FLAC and MP3. Anything I
have in FLAC is duplicated to mp3
using flac2mp3 and stored in a folder outside of the music tree.
If any mp3 albums in the music tree eventually
become available as FLAC, I erase the mp3 files in the music tree and
let flac2mp3 create new mp3 files outside of the tree.
it's nearly automated and thanks to the local Future Shop's lingering
clearance sales, I'm using it a lot.

Re: [slim] Let's here some suggestions for SlimServer 7

2007-09-27 Thread Meatwad650

Here's a feature that would be cool for me.

Support the ability to assign a "score" to a file format or somehow
weight it so that I can state a preference. In other words if I have a
track in both FLAC and MP3 formats it'd be really cool if I had a way to
say "only show/play the FLAC version". But if the track is only in MP3
then MP3 is fine.

Pretty far out there, I know...
