[slim] Need advice on Amp & Speakers

2007-10-02 Thread mike_zandvliet

Hello everyone!

I need advice from anyone who knows about amps and large speakers...
if that's you - please read on!

I am in charge of the music for an event coming up in a few months
time, and have absolutely no idea what kind of amp and speaker set up I
need. I'll likely be using my Squeezebox 2 as the music source - but
have never needed to use it anywhere larger than my living room.

The event will have about 80 people up and dancing in a conference room
with a low ceiling. The room is about 10 metres wide and 13 metres long,
and the speakers need to fill most of the room with clear, loud, sound
(think a couple of steps down from a night club).

It'd be great if we could hook up a wireless microphone to the amp as
well, so that the MC can speak to the crowd as needed.

Anyone want to hazard a guess what size of amp/speakers I'd need?
Would 400 Watt speakers do it? And does the amp need to have the same
rating or different from the speakers?

Sorry for my ignorance in these matters! I hope someone can offer some
suggestions.

Thanks!
Mike

It's a preference in Server Settings/Behaviour. "show artist with albums"
or something.

No kidding, as someone on Xbox 360 number 3 and who knows a guy on

I don't see the display part listed in the store, but I can get a new

I'd be amazed, Consumer electronics are generally not repairable.

I've got a SB1/g (wired only) that I'm not using if you are interested

[slim] Squeezebox 1 w/ Upgraded (Dead) Display

2007-10-02 Thread lowbit

I noticed this morning that my Squeezebox 1 (with the upgraded display)
appeared to be off. There was nothing on the display and it wasn't
responding to the remote or to a power cycle. I opened it up this
evening and am seeing an orange spark on the front side of the display
board near C22 when power is applied to the device. Not to mention the
nice smell of ozone.

Obviously there has been a hardware failure. Anyone else know if a
repair is possible or if one can order a new display for this unit?
Rather disappointing when I have far older audio gear running
flawlessly. :-(

I had stayed away from outlining solutions affecting content (skip or
resample) on purpose in my reply since in the described scenario both
instances are running on the same machine and thus, in an ideal world,
should use the *same* crystal (and not 2 hand-picked ones, which will
always drift).

But for situations where sharing the sync signal is not possible (e.g.:
1 squeezebox and 1 squeezeslave), then this resync feature you are
describing will be a great improvement, thanks for the heads up!

[slim] playback problem

2007-10-02 Thread Upgradealways

I know I will proabably get in trouble for the double post but I got no
answer in the Vista thread so I am going to the genral. Basically my
problem is since migrating to Vista, the music when connected to
SLimservers is hashed and constantly cuts and by cutting I mean a cut
every half to one second.

I have tried turning off the firewall. virus software, windows sidebar,
openning ports. If you have any suggestions please fell free. I have no
problem on squeeznetwork. I have doen the networks test and have no
bandwith issue.

original post...

I run Vista Premium. My problem is playback. Any song whether it plays
on my squeezebox or softsqueeze jitters. The music keeps on cutting. I
have no problem on squeezenetwork. The squeezebox is wired to a linksys
router so wireless is not an issue. The PC has plenty of capacity, 3
gigs of RAM. No other process susceptible of taking resource is
running. I have gone in the firewall and granted access to ports,
slimserver, scanner.

If I use the exact same setup but use an old Emachine underpowered as a
source, I get no problem at all (in runs on XP)

I have the lastest slimserver version, it was doing the same older
versions

Any thoughts ?

[slim] pocketpc and security

2007-10-02 Thread cbslim

Hi !

I have been able to use the slimserver with GSPlayer on my pocketpc
(without security) from inside the LAN. I would now like to listen to
it from the outside. I do not want to open a port on my router without
security.

None of the pocketpc players seem to be able to deal with password
protected streams. I can't get slimremote on PocketPC to work even
inside the LAN.

I am OK with allowing unprotected access to the stream.mp3, but not to
the webpage controls. Can I password protect the web page, but not the
stream? Maybe put the stream on a different port?

The other options seem to be VPN ing into the server machine or Ogg
Vorbis ing the stream.

Any other simpler options?

TIA

[slim] Problems with Multiple albums with same name

2007-10-02 Thread Ralph Plumb
I updated to latest version of slim device software. It seemed to
work alright but after adding some more albums to my iTunes and
rescanning my slim service I have a problem with my albums. On
several of my albums, rather than showing all of the songs under the
same album name, it created multiple albums with same name each of
which contain only the songs within the album by the same artist. For
example, with 70 artists on one album, I end up with 70 different
albums with the same name but containing Ray Charles songs in one and
so on. I have checked the new albums with get info and see no
difference between these albums and others that catalog properly.
Anyone got any ideas or had similar problems

[slim] how to arrange album art and so on...

2007-10-02 Thread MrSinatra

in fishbone, when i browse in gallery view, i do artist, year, album.

can someone please verify that the way SS works when it organizes music
from a scan, is that it arranges the albums via the "artist" tag, but
when it displays the artist name in gallery view, it uses the
"albumartist" or "band" tag first if available?

can someone also explain why it does that? and is it possible to
change that behavior?

also, is it the case that albumartist as a tag is supposed to account
for any given track on a CD which may have an extra artist or be
different from the main artist of the CD?

for instance on the billy joel box set, on CD3 there is a track with
both billy joel and ray charles performing together.

should artist for that track be billy joel, and albumartist be 'billy
joel / ray charles.'?

i just switched it to that, to see what SS will do with it now, but b4
it was reversed, and so SS put the whole CD3 under various artists b/c
of that.

[slim] minor no artwork default image issue

as a result, the buttons under the ? mark image and the CD info are

Re: [slim] Please help me solve a SS .asx streaming problem

2007-10-02 Thread Mark Lanctot

Probably true, but did you get that uncompressed track to play? Until
you compare lossless, it's supposition.

Actually when used purely as a transport, the SB3 has nothing to be
ashamed of. Its jitter numbers are extremely low. And with a secure
ripper and AccurateRip, we know for a fact that the bits coming out are
identical to those off the CD. The humble SB3 has an advantage over a
regular CD transport here - the ripping process can be done over and
over again to ensure the bits are perfect, a transport has only one
shot at it no matter how good it is.

That's what I use, ripping to flac. It works great with CDs that are
in good shape. For CDs in bad shape, EAD on a Windows desktop works
better than Max on my Macbook Pro (although EAD is much less convienent
for setting up tags). I suspect that the difference is a better CD
drive in the desktop rather than a software difference, but I don't
know that for sure. I've considered buying an external CD drive for
the Macbook Pro to see if that helps with bad CDs, since I much prefer
working with Max when I can.

[slim] SqueezeCenter - Album & artist index for non-english text

2007-10-02 Thread auronthas

I upgraded my SS from 6.5.4 to SC 7 last night.

Kudos to team crews who develop this fantastic software. I have no more
buffering problem with internet radio since, could it improvement of SC7
or my ISP?

However, there is a 'bug' in album & artist index, the text A to Z are
shown within the grey box, but not other character such chinese,
japanese text, I do hope it can be improved, otherwise, the non-english
text clashes with the first album art.

Attached please find photo showing the above problem

Is that right? I thought the SlimDevices stock was all gone? So anybody
in North America who orders one today gets the SlimDevices logo, but
overseas gets the Logitech version?

There are a number of ways to get the info you want.

Using the web interface, browse Albums > Album name (gives you list of
songs) > click any of the song titles > Song info including location is
then listed.

This info also available on the squeezebox by clicking right arrow on
album and continue clicking right until the end then click up/down to
get song info.

[slim] How do I find the folder location of my music

2007-10-02 Thread Wilbur111

I keep my music on a selection of hard drives and in various folders. A
while ago I was able to get the slimserver to tell me the address for an
album but now I can't remember how.

Would someone tell me how, please?

Thanks.

Re: [slim] Browse entire filesystem (not just audio files)

2007-10-02 Thread funkstar

I haven't heard of or seen any plugins that do this, and there
certainally isn't a way to do it in SS itself.
