[slim] DIGITAL VOLUME CONTROL OUTPUT FIXED bug

2007-11-04 Thread willyhoops

I can't stop people messing with the darn volume control. There is a
setting on both the player interface and the Web interface that says
Disable Volume Adjustment or Digital Output Level is fixed but it does
not work. Anyone know why I have this bug?

Re: [slim] DIGITAL VOLUME CONTROL OUTPUT FIXED bug

2007-11-04 Thread Patrick Dixon

Disable volume adjustment only applies to Automatic Volume adjustment
which works from the replay gain tags on a track by track, or album by
album basis. Fixing the digital output level will only affect anything
if you are connecting to an external DAC using the electrical or optical
digital output. So I doubt you have a bug.

I don't think there's any way to set and lock the analogue volume
control, so the best approach is to remove remote privileges from any
of your friends/family who abuse them ;-)

[slim] Simple amp speaker setup

2007-11-04 Thread Gibbo

Hi

as in another thread I want to setup some connection to my SB in
another room. I'm looking at getting a small set of bookshelf speakers
and an amp, i'm not going to be connecting the amp to anything else so
it only needs one input, if that makes a difference. i'm in the uk and
want to keep it below £150 for the setup.

what would people reccomend?

any views appreciated.

And provided that the distance you're running the splitter cable isn't
too long. That's an unbalanced line level signal, and if the cable runs
more than 2 meters or so there's a good chance it will pick up
interference and you'll get a low frequency hum. So keep the cable run
short, and if you can't do that, look into other options like using
cat5 + baluns.

I'd recommend another SB. After the cost of the baluns and the
inconvenience of pulling the cat5 cable, you still wouldn't have any
control of the SB from the kitchen. Get another SB, you won't regret
it.

Start watching on eBay, and if you can possibly afford an SB2 or SB3
instead of an SB1, that would also be a good idea. The SB2 and SB3 have
bigger buffers, support wifi G, and have other benefits.

I use this in my bedroom coupled to Mission 771 speakers.
Clarity is really very good. Fantastic soundstage. Plenty of power for

Amp runs cold so I leave it on all the time - as it's my alarm clock

Re: [slim] Music skipping

2007-11-04 Thread mik63

The idea that it can be something in the music file is interesting.
But how is that it happens randomly, and not in a specific file and
position?
Also, I am watching the buffer fullness on the SB3 screen and it is
100% full, then suddenly, when the skip occurs, it goes to zero and
reloads.
This tells me that it is something with the SB3, that the packets
arrive in the right sequence and they are stuffed in the buffer
properly..; then something strange happens and makes the buffer
"reset"...

For now support has only suggested to connect the SB3 directly and not
wireless; it makes no difference...

That would work.

Or if the problem is limited to people messing with the volume using
the remote, you can edit IR/Default.map so that the volume keys don't
work. I set mine so they both increase the volume as I keep my
Squeezebox volume at max all the time and use the volume on my device.

You can also create an IR/Custom.map and then go into player
settings, remote, and choose Custom in the Remote Button Functions.

Credit to kdf for showing me how to do this back in '04.

Re: [slim] DS106 and mplayer

2007-11-04 Thread flipflip

There is no SSODS version 6.3.1. You probably mean Slimserver 6.3.1.
SSODS >= 2.5 (or so), however, comes with mplayer. For certain reasons,
it is not called mplayer but mplayer-stdout. Hence, you need to adjust
the conversion rules accordingly (in custom-convert.conf for 6.5.x and
in some other file which name I don't remember for 6.3.x). How to
enable mplayer(-stdout) for AlienBBC is documented in the README. The
procedure for other file formats (m4a in your case) should work in a
similar way. I think people have already done this.

See here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?AppleLosslessUnix

Something like the following rule should work:

Code:

  mov wav * *
  [mplayer-stdout] -novideo -ao pcm:file=- $FILE$ 2>/dev/null

Most of the report that I have seen recently are in respect to sudden
stopping. This can have a number of reasons and so initially each case
should be treated separately rather than assuming one common cause.

Re: [slim] Anyone tried running SlimServer on a fit-PC?

2007-11-04 Thread MelonMonkey

What's performance on the web interface using a Fit-PC? I used to run
SlimServer on a dual-processor 533MHz Power Mac G4 and thought the
performance was abysmal. It improved significantly moving the
installation over to a 1.5GHz dual-core Mac mini. Obviously this system
could be put to use as a client/workstation rather than a server. It
would be great to have something lower priced and more efficient to run
SlimServer as long as the performance wasn't terrible.

Someone mentioned that the Thecus N5200 NAS was very similar to the
other small system mentioned, the Windows Home Server from Ripcaster.
They're nothing alike. The Thecus uses only a 600MHz processor where
that Home Server has a 1.5GHz chip.

The Linutop seems like not much more than a more expensive and
feature-light Fit-PC. It has no hard drive.

I'd love to see something at this price point with multiple cores and
gigabit ethernet.

The Thecus looks pretty nice as a NAS which could also be capable of
running SlimServer, but all reports mention its configuration software
is the pits. I can't say I'm terribly excited about its speed either,
though it's head and shoulders above any other consumer NAS such as the
terribly slow Infrant products.

Tons of us do. Search the forum for "powered speakers" or "active
speakers" and you'll find lots of models and advice. If you go the
active speaker route the first thing to do is figure out your budget,
because the solutions available range from $30 to over $2000.

Two models that get a lot of good reviews here are the Aego M (a
subwoofer + 2 tiny satellites for about $200) and AudioEngine A5s (a 2
channel system for around $300).

Re: [slim] Skipping folders for import

I'd put them outside your music folder.

Under normal circumstances, SS won't see them.

When you want to see them, simply make a shortcut to those folders
inside your music folder and re-scan (or just browse to it). When
you've had enough of that, delete the shortcut or even move the
shortcut to the temporary folders for re-use later.

I do this for Christmas music.

Re: [slim] Wireless bridging problem

I've recently had a similar issue with bridging, and it appears to be
WPA2-related. My Slimserver PC is bridged using my SB2 and I lose

This is a repeatable issue and is resolved by either rebooting the

[slim] SB3 restarts songs

2007-11-04 Thread superbad

I've just recently started having a problem where my SB3 either 1) stops
mid song (display reads "stopped"), or 2) restarts at the beginning of
the current song, repeatedly.

I am pretty confident this is not a wireless issue- I've had plenty of
those in the past, and they usually manifest themselves as dropouts,
not as song stops/restarts. This problem happens even on low bandwidth
internet radio streams. My buffer fullness stays at 100% consistently.
Feels like a firmware problem, but I don't know why it's suddenly
popped up. Any ideas?

Well, if you're going to get rid of the router anyway, you might as well
flash it with DD-WRT first. It's worth a try.

Although I'm not using bridging full-time, I've never had a problem

Make sure you're not using WPA2/TKIP, that's not entirely supported.

[slim] LIbrary/Directory Organization - Seasonal Music

Getting close to tis the season again. Does anyone have any suggestions

Done a fresh install of Mac OS 10.4.10.
Installed SlimServer 6.5.5.
Had some success and had music playing.
Paused a song - SB3 (on wireless network) displays Stopped.

And now I can't get any music to play - I just get the "Problem: Can't
open file for xxx" - which my searching has suggested that this means
the music has moved, or it's path has changed... but it hasn't!

I've reinstalled the firmware (v81), tried downgrading to 6.5.4, redone
a complete music scan (all music managed by iTunes 7.4) and reset to
factory defaults and re-added the SB3. Yesterday, before the reinstall,
it was working fine!

SlimServer on the Mac server can "see" all the music still (as can
iTunes) as I can click through the albums, but in the right-hand side
of the screen the Music Player says Stopped and I cannot get it to
play.

The SB3 can navigate it's way through all the music by artist, album
etc but just won't play anything.

If someone could please spare the time to help me sort this problem
out, I would be most grateful. I've got a feeling I've overlooked
something VERY simple/obvious here :-)

Many thanks,

Face

Re: [slim] LIbrary/Directory Organization - Seasonal Music

2007-11-04 Thread aubuti

And to keep it from playing in July, I use Erland's Dynamic Playlist and
SQL Playlist plugins to create normal playlists that exclude the
"Holiday" genre, and seasonal playlists that include only the "Holiday"
genre, with different playlists "serious" Christmas music (e.g.,
Hallelujah Chorus) and "fun" Christmas music (Bing, Satchmo, etc.).

[slim] OT: Finding & eliminating duplicate files

2007-11-04 Thread egd

I've been going through a process of creating some order on my PCs and
external storage. As part of the process I wanted to identify and
eliminate duplicate files - I'd noticed I have multiple copies of the
same family snaps, probably the result of copying photos from my folks
and in-laws which inevitably means that I'm also taking copies of
photos I originally gave them.

To cut a long story short, after considerable googling and trialling I
settled on zsDuplicateHunter Professional Edition and was able to kill
700MB of duplicate files within a matter of 10 minutes. If you're
looking for a duplicate file manager, it is most definitely the best I
have come across. A real killer feature for me is the ability to point
it at a folder and tell it to find all duplicates anywhere within the
folder structure. It doesn't force a source/ target type comparison.

I don't normally do this but it is so effective at solving an issue I'm
guessing many of us have that I thought I'd pass on the tip.

And I'll "fifth" this issue...looks like I'll be calling them in the AM,
after chasing so-called network and server issues for the past 18
months, literally. I wish it had completely died inside the warranty
period, instead of stringing me along all this time. Geeze!

Let's be completely honest though...if companies made products that they
truly believed they could stand behind, they would offer lifetime
unconditional warranties. Most companies these days are mediocre and
care little about product quality and customer satisfaction, aside from
the bare minimum required to acquire and maintain a customer base.

Everything eventually decays. Plus who knows how the equipment is
situated, maybe by a heat source. Good companies will replace the
equipment out of warranty if they think they are not being screwed.
Get in the real world.

Can you name a single consumer electronics vendor with such a policy?

Not agreeing with poster, but AR replaced the woofers on my speakers 7
years after the warranty expired.

I find the Fit-PC performance to be fine on the web interface.

Now my library is only about 4000 songs, so that may be why it's quite
snappy.

Re: [slim] Left and right channel reversal

2007-11-04 Thread Acme

I use EAC with no-compression. I use wav files only.

I use my SB3 with a DAC.

If I put the problematic recording in my cd player and I use my DAC I
can clearly hear the 'reverse' between left and right when I switch
digital input from the the SB3 to my cd player.

Do these albums have any commonality? HDCD logos for example - not a
likely cause, I expect, but I'd be looking for something in common with
the recordings. As both WAV and CD Redbook formats are PCM, which
interleaves the L/R channel information, it is unlikely a corruption
during ripping, as EAC would pick this up, *hopefully*. Unless you can
configure EAC to swap left and right channels on purposeI'm not
sure if this is possible.
Try ripping them again?

Not sure this is relevant. You are aware that lossless compression
like FLAC only compresses the data, not the audio?

I was probably wrong to pinpoint the ripping process, but the SB3 can
no more flip channels -on certain albums only- than your CD player can.
If it did do it, it would do it all the time.

I'd suggest also listening to the same music files on a computer to
figure out for sure if the reversal is within the data files or within
the playback stream. I would expect that it has to be in the data, but
couldn't say how it happened.

Maybe it's a Europe/US difference, but two-year warranties are common
over here now. In fact I think it may be European law.

Regardless, out-of-warranty failures will always occur from time to
