Re: [slim] Maxbitrate?

2007-12-02 Thread schiegl

concerning FLAC 24bit/96Khz files: I have a few ones which show these
problems even with replay gain disabled and no screensaver at all.

the only workaround i've found so far is transcoding on the server side
to flac-compress level 0 to relieve the transporter CPU.

convert.conf:

Code:

  #flc flc * *
  # -
  flc flc * *
  [flac] -dcs --skip=$START$ --until=$END$ -- $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --lax
--totally-silent --compression-level-0 -

unfortunately this disables fast forward/reward (which i don't care)
but also seek support using the progress bar on the webinterface.

You can, there is a rescan music library plugin that can be scheduled to
perform a scan regularly. I do an automatic complete wipe/rescan every
night so that I catch any scanning issues that crop up in the beta.

Re: [slim] Love My Squeezebox! What's The Equivalent For Video?

2007-12-02 Thread hoosier

Hands down, the best video solution is a TViX (www.dvico.com). It does
for video what the Squeezebox does for audio.

They are still working on new and better hardware, so at this point, it
reminds me a lot of the original Squeezebox with the crappy VFD (before
it went bitmapped). The box aint that pretty either.

Of all of the video solutions out there, the reason the TViX stands out
is that it plays ripped DVDs (in single file .ISO or multi file
IFO/VOBs) as if they were actual DVDs (menus and all).

The TViX also makes a lame attempt at playing mp3/flac/ogg files, but
it really shines with DVDs and video.

They all play high def and newer models will also play h.264 files, but
it chokes on high bandwidth HD files encoded as VC1 or h.264 (ie Blue
Ray or HDDVD). No problems with mpeg2 (over the air high def is
fine).

I own 5 Squeezeboxen and 2 TViX players (a 5000 and a 4100). They
complement each other well.

Re: [slim] SlimServer not restarting

2007-12-02 Thread wb52

You need to set Leopards firewall to access the SlimServer. I had this
problem also when I first upgraded, and it took some time to figure
out. I was using version 7.0 beta but it has some interface issues, so
I had to back track to version 6.5.4. In Leopards firewall you need to
set it up to access the System Preference Pane for the SlimServer and
Perl access. To do this you need to go to System Preferences then
Security and select Firewall, click on Set access for specific services
and applications then click the plus sign to add an application, browse
to your SlimServer preference pane and allow incoming connections. That
should fix your problem. If your familiar with the command line run
netstat -an to see if the SlimServer is running.

[slim] Transporter freeze up after listening to 24bit/96khz FLAC

2007-12-02 Thread chesebert

I am having problem with my transporter freeze up after listening to the
24bit/96khz flac (linn records) and attempt to switch to my own
16bit/44khz.

The symptom is as follows:
1) listen to the 24bit flac for say 10 min
2) immediately press play on a 16bit/44khz flac file
3) transporter/server would show the file playing but no sound coming
out!!

remedy: recycle the power.

What's the problem here?

I have tried this with slimserver 6.5, squeezecenter 7.0 and 7.01a -
all have the same problem

You say you didn't imply it before, but now you are outright saying it.
And you are wrong. My SB is 2 feet from my head, there's an amp
connected to it, I'm a light sleeper (it certainly wakes me up every
morning as it's supposed to) and it has never done this once in 18
months. My Transporter is the same, it turns on my receiver using
IRBlaster (but is not configured to turn it off) and if it turned on
when I wasn't watching my receiver would stay on. Universal means
every single one ever made, and this is not the case.

You don't seem to be the only one with this issue, however, to state
that it MUST be a universal issue because you think so is ridiculous.

Yes, it's hard to diagnose and it's not reproducible on command, which
makes it extremely difficult to fix because no one knows what causes
it.

Maybe you should threaten to sue again. That sure worked last time.
(Actually it did, Andy was nice enough to make very quick changes but
you complained anyway.)

Re: [slim] Love My Squeezebox! What's The Equivalent For Video?

2007-12-02 Thread sander

I would put forth in the current environment there will never be
anything equivalent in the video world due to the differences in
digital video, opposite digital audio.

Companies like Apple and Slim/Logitech piggy backed on the success of
the whole digital audio ecosystem, which grew out of an environment
that no longer exists.

The biggest problem I see is the lack of anything remotely similar to
the ubiquity of MP3, and now that the content producers are intent on
DRM, it will be a long time (maybe never) that you can buy movies in a
decent format like Divx/Xvid or H.264/mkv. Instead they will shoehorn
you into some proprietary junk, that will likely only play with
extensive trans coding or some constant checking with their server.

So we're stuck with the tower of babel, both incoming (file format) and
outgoing (HDMI 1.3 and beyond). I think the issue comes down to where
you're getting your video and how you want to play it, and what your
server is.

If you want to play anything you need a beefy CPU on either end (client
or server), from what I've seen the best on the client would be some
sort of hacked PC (xbmc, hacked appletv) but you're talking a great
amount of prep time with the chance of bricking the device. On the back
end there are a number of servers each with their own set of drawbacks,
generally ranging from freedom/anonymity on one end to the ability to
play protected media/corporate tracking on the other.

More common are UPnP devices which have custom chip sets (usually Sigma
Designs) which can trans code on the server end if you run their PC
software.

I have the buffalo LinkTheater DVD player, and for what I use it for,
streaming Divx/xvid/Mpeg 2/4 it works pretty well, but most other
things it sucks. What I like is I can stream from my NAS and all the
video is done on the device which means I don't need a real server. But
without transcoding it will never play my Sony SD 550 movies or any
newer codecs, which I can live with for now.

My feeling is Asian companies will take the lead on this as they're
less worried about DRM, and don't have to deal with media companies
coming after them, like American companies do. Most of the units
mentioned in this thread are Asian units rebranded for a small US
distribution company. So there won't be a quirky Slim type start-ups
coming down the pike more like TVIX (check out the TVIX forums to see
what I'm talking about http://forum.tvixbox.com/ ).

The best forum/information source I've found on this is the AVS Forum
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=39

Good luck!

I've heard good things about the Audioengine speakers and I am edging
towards the A2s for their reduced size (WAF important) and price.

I have looked at the Aego M also but I need a 2.0 setup as presumably I
would need to put a sub on the floor and I dont think that would be very
practical in the kitchen.

The main area of the kitchen is about 12 feet by 14 feet would the A2s
be ok for this?

[slim] Display format when browsing music folder

2007-12-02 Thread cliveb

I don't know when this changed (presumably at some release of
SqueezeCenter 7.0), but I've recently noticed that when browsing the
music folder, the Squeezebox display now shows the full pathname rather
than just the last part of it. (For example, whereas before it might
have just displayed "The Wall", it now displays
"\\musicserver\e-drive\FLAC.N-Z\Pink Floyd\The Wall".

This is actually not very useful. My typical (only?) use for Browse
Music Folder is to find a new album I've just added to the library so I
can add it to the SqueezeCenter database without needing to do a rescan.
Now that the complete pathname is shown, even at the smallest font size
the album name drops off the right hand end of the display, so you have
to wait a second or two at each entry for the display to start scrolling
before you know whether you've arrived at the right place. (At my
default font setting - large - you don't even get to see the artist
name before it scrolls!)

Is there a setting somewhere in SqueezeCenter that reverts to just
showing the last element of the pathname? I've had a look around in the
Settings page, but can't find one.

[slim] MAC OSX - How do I direct Slimserver to read music files on an external drive?

2007-12-02 Thread stippie

I'm a recent PC to Mac convert (Vista/Fat32 file system corrupted my
Vaio and all of my ripped music).

I can get Slimserver and the Mac Mini/Airport setup to work fine, but
can't get the SS to scan my external Iomega HD for music. I'm not
clear on Mac filepath structure yet and SS/OSX doesn't seem to support
"browse" in defining file paths. None of the combinations I use work
(e.g., Devices->Iomega HDD->Slimserver Music)

So my question is: How do I get the music file designation currently
set at:

/Users/stephentippie/Music

Which reads the library on my internal HD fine, to point to:

Iomega HDD->Slimserver Music

Which is what I've set up to hold my ripped music.

Thanks,
Steve

PS. Slimserver developers - how about a browse function?

It can be done. One slimserver creates an audio stream that the other
one plays. In theory it could work, but I never bothered to try it.

Re: [slim] Bitrate Display

2007-12-02 Thread Arie

Thanks for pointing me out this great plug in. I really like to
configure my own display settings. All's working great now, and to show
other SB fans the effect I added the result as a picture. Just one minor
detail, I wouldn't mind losing the 'KBPS' after the number.

Thanks for you reply. The drawback of file system integration is that
it won't make it possible to resample files at the source, and playing
FLAC files over ADSL lines is not feasible.

Perhaps a plugin could be made to do this...?

Slimserver as it stands won't do what you are asking for.

The closest I can think of would be to combine the contents of the
various servers at the file system / OS level - using shortcuts in the
"main" server out to the subsidiary ones. Slimserver would then just
see one filesystem, which it would be happy with, although it would of
course have no means of treating the different components differently.

Bingo Mark! Flac isn't always flac. Here's a new debugging question to
ask on the forum? Stuttering isn't always about the bandwidth of the
wireless network. I guess the lesson here is to stay away from anything
that is flakey!

[slim] Connecting to several servers simultaneously?

2007-12-02 Thread . brum

Hi,

Is there a way to either connect the SB3 to several servers at the same
time, where some are outside of the local network, or to "bridge" remote
servers to the local one so that you can access the other servers'
contents?

Since the content can be losslessly packed and the connection of the
remote servers vary, the ideal solution would support connection
specific resampling settings. I guess that for the server at the
material providing end, the connecting server could look like a player,
for which a forced resampling can be set. But it would also require user
ids and passwords separate from the one main one for the web interface.

Any thoughts?

TIA,

.brum

Re: [slim] Maxbitrate?

2007-12-02 Thread bpa

chesebert,

This could be a Transporter buffering problem which is exacerbated by
the additional small delays inherent when using wifi.

The fact that you can get continuous subsequent audio - means that
although your wifi may be marginal - it is OK.

When a track is being played - the Transporter buffer is initially
filled up and then when full "play" is initiated. It looks like the
Transporter waits just a little bit too long (when using marginal wifi)
before asking for the first top up of the buffer. This might because you
are using Flac 24bit/96KHz files which require high datarates.

I think you should log this as a bug.
