Re: [slim] SC7 library logic tags wiki entry project needed!

2008-04-06 Thread MrSinatra

i should note here the nature of my setup and the problem leading me to
see the extreme need for this.

i use EAC and lame.exe to rip 256kbps mp3s. (all mp3s made with lame
3.96 or later). i have the lame dll also installed in EAC to give me
the extra dialog screen, but afaik, i don't have EAC/lame setup to
create any special tags. i do make both v1.1 and v2.3 id3 tags.

i have not been able to find a program that shows me the exact names of
the fields in my tags, but i assume my tags use:

TPE1 for artist
TPE2 for albumartist or band

i do not think i have any user defined fields/tags, or any
"compilation" tags.

i use winamp 5.53 (set to no guessing) to handle my tag editing.

in SC7, i have the settings->music library choices set to:

NO checkmarks checked in the first three checkboxes, so

Composer
Conductor
Band/Orchestra

are all UNCHECKED. as far as i can tell, these checkboxes are only for
including in artist lists for searching.

after that, i have...

Group compilation albums together
and
List albums by band

...both selected.

here is my problem:

ANY album that has agreement on the albumartist field in winamp, but
has varying folks in the artist field for the same album, gets treated
as a various artists album.

so if ray charles is on one track with billy joel on one cd of the
billy joel box set, that one cd gets put under various artists even
though billy joel is the only person under albumartist.

in other words, the album is NOT being sorted properly.

so when i browse artwork, and i am in artist, year, album, that cd is
missing from the B's and is under the V's.

interestingly, the "list albums by band" option, while having no effect
on sorting, DOES DISPLAY the album as by billy joel, both under the B's
and V's.

so this is the heart of my issue, but i think all of us would benefit
from having a flowchart that would show expected behaviors.

Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection

2008-04-06 Thread Tiger

Yesterday, I upgraded to 2171 hoping that this Controller connectivity
issue could be solved. No luck. Every couple of minutes, the signal
strength indicator goes blue and reconnect fails most of the time.
Switching the new "WLAN power save mode" on or off doesn't seem to have
any effect, except when it's off, the battery drains quicker.
However, this is NOT a router issue, even though Slimdevices seems to
indicate so. My Zyxel router/wlan AP works fine with:

- IBM T60 laptop
- Nokia N95 mobile phone
- Playstation 3 (even with worse signal strength)
- Canon MP800R wlan printer
- Duet Receiver (yes, the receiver works quite fine when controlled by
SC / laptop FROM THE SAME LOCATION, where the Controller keeps dropping
out)

So the suggestion to get another router is just plain ridiculous. I
had such high expectations of the Squeezebox Duet system, and now I'm
simply just very, very disappointed.

Re: [slim] "Greatest Hits" problem?

2008-04-06 Thread MrSinatra

here's the thing... i think a TPE2 tag is by mp3.org standard a band or
albumartist tag, but i could be wrong.

(if i do indeed only have a TPE2 field, and no other fields for this
data, then both WMP and winamp as well as mp3tag all interpret that
info as albumartist OR band interchangeably)

i don't even know for sure if my tags are tpe2, but i am now assuming
so. i wish i had a program that would just show me the raw data in my
tags, not just the data of the info for a given field, but what the
field itself is too.

in any case, it seems to me you are using a 3rd party tag prog
workaround to get your tags done in such a way as to get SC7 to handle
them the way you want.

my point from the beginning of this thread has been that SC7 does not
sort correctly when using a generic tag type setup.

i think i laid it all out well here, let me know what you think in this
thread please:

I have now found out that I can add All the podcasts from Loveline to

I'm getting a similar problem with with CDex encoded Ogg Vorbis files -

Not good at all, I've only just noticed it as for the last few weeks

Technically you could have 2 albums with the same name - one an artist
album and one a compilation various hits album. The tracks would need
to be indexed separately, so the tagging would have to work long term.

I guess everybody's needs are different. I personally exclusively use
the AlbumArtist tag and on various artists albums I apply an
AlbumArtist tag of "[Compilations]". On tracks that are performed by
artists elsewhere in my collection, I tag them with that artist as the
AlbumArtist. I effectively use it as a track artist tag.

[slim] Controller won't boot. Have tried a lot..

2008-04-06 Thread hbjoerge

I received my Duet system yesterday and I was up and running in no time.

Once during the night the controller wanted to update firmware and I
let it do so. I do belive the update was successful, as this was about
the first thing happening after the box was opened and it worked
flawlessly for the rest of the night. I put it back in the base and
when I turned it off for the night it was fully charged. I removed it
from the base

This morning it would not boot, not even blink. Ok, tried to charge it
again, nothing happens. I measured the charging station to 5.13v and it
seems ok.

Factory reset test:
I've tried pushing (and holding) the + and inserting the battery,
I've tried pushing the volume up key (and holding) and inserting
battery

Result: The device does not reboot. The only reaction I get is that the
button lights enlights, nothing more happens.

Sometimes when inserting the battery, the device will go to the
logitech screen but no further, in order to have the screen go away I
can hold the on/off button for some 20 seconds.

all in all my problem looks very much like
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45093, but I'm not able
to produce a logfile...as I haven't found the way to do it. I've tried
to insert an empty sd card to see if it would produce itself, but can't
say I've been successful

Any suggestions? the device worked flawlessly last night

Re: [slim] Using 2 wireless routers

2008-04-06 Thread rbl

So I have the SpeedTouch (a poor router) with DHCP enabled plugged into
the telephone line, and the LinkSys LAN socket plugged into the
SpeedTouch LAN socket, with DHCP server disabled on the LinkSys. The
LinkSys and SpeedTouch have different SSIDs and channels, but the same
WEP password.

My desktop, running SlimServer, is hard wired into the LinkSys, and
works. My Vista LapTop will happily connect to either the SpeedTouch or
the LinkSys. My SB3 happily connects to the SpeedTouch. However the SB3
sees the LinkSys, but will not automatically obtain an IP address from
the LinkSys. I want the SB3 to run form the LinkSys since this is the
better router, and I continue to have drop out problems with the
SpeedTouch (esp when running 2 sync'd SB3s). Any idea why everything
else runs from the LinkSys but not the SB3? I have 2 SB3s and they are
the same.

[slim] Does SS6.5 support duet? Why my Duet controller often loose connection with server?

Why my duet controller often loose connection with server?
Sometime the duet controller seems loose the connection with the server
although the wifi signal strength is rather good. When I try to browse

[slim] SqueezeCenter 7 rescan bug - tracks in album out of order

2008-04-06 Thread Kuro

I'm using the latest beta built of SqueezeCenter 7.0.1.18463.

My music collection is ripped via Apple iTune using Apple Lossless
format.

I found that if I tell SqueezeCenter to rescan only changes on the disk
(ie: newly ripped CDs), the tracks within the album will be shown out of
order on the Duet controller. But the track order appears fine within
the SqueezeCenter software itself.

If I do a complete rescan by deleting the library, then every tracks
are scanned in the correct order. The tracks start with track number
in the file itself.

Anyone is having the same problem?

Yes, I see it now. The build script doesn't build the dbclient by
default, for that you must enter "dbclient" along with "dropbear" and
"scp" on line 165 in 'this Makefile'

Well, a custom build shouldn't be that difficult. Or convince the
community to build it by default :)

You shouldn't need a PIN with the Duet. What steps of the basic
installation did you do so far? Is the Controller configured? Did you
configure the Receiver, too?

Hi rbl

How much have you tried to use your own LinkSys router? I suspect the
ISP one is only using some QoS for the on demand data. If you
configured your own router, it would just mean that your internet thru
put would be slower for everything else requiring the internet at the
time you were pulling down on demand data as it would try to use the
whole bandwidth, rather than what is given to it via QoS.

You should be able to just note the login settings down and put them
into your LinkSys box and away you go.

In the UK, BT provide their own router box but you can just use your
own router without problems. No more than setting the username/pwd to
be the same as the original router.

Cheers

[slim] Can you delete playlist from Duet Controller

2008-04-06 Thread Howard Passman

Hi, I've really tried to figure this out and look in the forum, but so
far I can't find the answer.

Using the Duet controller I add songs to a playlist by pressing the +
button. Is there any way to delete the entire playlist or any part of
it without have to go to SC to do it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

[slim] Hierachy of menu item "new music"

Hi,

is there any way to change the way the menu "new music" works?

Using SqueezeCenter 7 it's like that if I select the menu item "new
music" on my Squeezebox v3 only the titles of all new albums are shown.
Instead I would like to see the Artist/Interpret first...

Is it possible to change this behaviour?

Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection

2008-04-06 Thread kimbl

OK - I too have been following the upgrade trail on this issue. As yet
not got to the bottom of it.
Here's some more data to add to the mix -

SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0.1 - 18409 @ Sat Apr 5 00:41:56 PDT 2008 -
Debian - EN - utf8
SC remote 7.01 r2171

Belkin F5D7130 AP

Receiver on same wireless - this has apparently never dropped out -
once started playing it's perfect, even after the controller has
problems.

After a power-cycle on the remote all is fine, then after a few minutes
the remote wireless icon goes blue, and it can't talk to the
SqueezeCenter server.

The new "wireless power save off" options don't seem to change anything
- other than battery life as you'd expect.

Watching general network connection with ping -t shows some oddities -
generally successes are 4-5ms, and go for long periods. I have seen a
couple of wierd 1400ms pings. When the screen dims there's no change
in ping behaviour. Screen going off sometimes stops ping responses,
sometimes not - I haven't properly got to the bottom of that yet.

After the connection icon's gone blue, the network seems ok - or at
least reconnects correctly - both ping and SSH still work fine to the
remote. But it seems something's wrong above the basic network layer,
and the player has given up trying to get through to the SqueezeCenter
server (which is itself fine - it's still playing out of the receiver,
and web ok). This is even when it tries with the rotating dots and
"connecting to..." - no change in icon when I can see the network layer
is ok because SSH is still open.

I've been looking in the logs in /var/log/messages, (and can happily
post same) but probably need more detail to make useful comment - which
process is responsible for the server comms and I'll turn it up to debug
level...!

[slim] Controller won't wake up ?

2008-04-06 Thread coupesport

I've had my Duet for about 3 weeks now and its working great.
Squeezecentre is running on a spare Mac Powerbook with all my music on
an 1.5Tb Readynas NV+. I've wired the Receiver directly to my router.

I seem to have a persistent problem with the controller. I have the
clock screensaver running and normally when i pick it up it wakes and i
can use it as intended. Other times i pick it up and the backlighting
flickers briefly and then the unit won't respond or the controller has
the backlight on (all keys lit up, no display) and again won't respond
when picked up or keys are pressed. Holding down the home button for
about 10 secs seems to reboot it.

Any ideas ? - The system is fantastic but this issue is getting to be a
pain.

Thanks

James

Re: [slim] Please help - Duet PIN not working, i've tried it all

2008-04-06 Thread Howard Passman

I am totally new to the whole mess, but I went through the same thing as
you did. The instructions tend to misdirect or not inform you of *when*
you can get your pin.

First, you have to get communication between the Controller and the
receiver! Also, I beleive, the receiver must have communication with
your network and be able to hit the Internet. Then and only then you
can go to Home/Settings/Advanced/About (on your controller).

At least that's how I finally got it.

Hope this helps and have a great day.

Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection

2008-04-06 Thread denmennis

Here is the latest episode in my saga. I got up this AM and went to
check on Duet (this is getting to be as commonplace as feeding my dogs
in the morning). Completely disconnected. I think she was out late
last night and wanted to sleep in.

I clearly recognize that I need to ramp up my wireless network. That
being said, I also realize that I am doing this primarily for my Duet
since I can sit in the same room with my laptop without having any
problems connecting to the network. I know that the laptop has a more
robust antenna etc, etc.so where is the inherent weakness really? I
think it all depends on the way that you look at the problem. Is it the
network which otherwise does everything that you expect or is it the
wireless client that is the weak link?

If I had read this forum prior to ordering the Duet, I probably would
have waited for the bugs to be ironed out or I would have gone in a
different direction and not ordered the Duet at all. After coddling,
nurturing and swearing at the Duet for almost 3 weeks now, its kind of
like an old girlfriend. You may or may not like her, but its hard to
let go. Lets face it, when it works , its can bring a smile to your
face.

So I'm going to risk screwing up my network altogether and try to hack
out a solution which I guess means that I won't be sending the Duet
back. I have to agree with rtimuss. Each network is different and one
solution does not work for all and I know that the Logitech people are
trying to work on this.

Regards
dj

Re: [slim] MacPro Users-Anyone using Digital Into the MP with SB3?

2008-04-06 Thread Eric Seaberg

Why waste the SB3 for that when you can play your entire Slim library
using SoftSqueeze on the MP.

Also, any DRM'd music from iTunes can be burned to CD, then re-ripped
for Slim. However, I would HIGHLY advise re-ripping lossless since the
damage to the music has already been done in the first compression done
by Apple. DO NOT RE-RIP AS MP3!!

Press home twice to get to the Now Playing screensaver, then push the
center button to get to the current playlist. At the bottom of the
current playlist there are options to save or clear.

The quicker way to clear the playlist is just push play instead of add
on an album/artist/genre, which will clear the playlist and start
playing that (much to some peoples dismay).

Anyway one would also need some kind of configuration system. The shell
is not accessible through the ui on the controller itself. Whether the
whole thing would be worth it would depend on the sort of battery life
one ends up with when streaming. Streaming to my mobile phone over wlan
is, albeit very cool, borderline useless due to the very limited
battery-life i get when doing it.

[slim] Rerunn of old scanner bug or not (2475 )

2008-04-06 Thread Mnyb

Hi i recently noticed that scanner won't scan folders with "foreign "
characters in the folder name ? at least not the nordic/swedish
character "ö".
As all my Björk and Röyksopp music was gone.
And it will not scan files with "ö" in the tags.

Proved by this workaround, if i go to each folder via "music folders"
and start each album then the artist and album shows up (with slightly
broken images at some places).

But for the songs with "ö" i had to play each and every song, then they
show up in albums etc.

That for for "scan for new or changed music" or what.

Now I'm in the process of a complete clear and rescan I supect that
this work around won't survive that I'll post when it's done.

Please inform me if theres an never bug on this, then I can vote there.

Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection

2008-04-06 Thread FatClemenza

Same issues as everyone else. I downloaded the latest build which only
served to make the controller angry.

Anyhoo, after rebooting the controller about 6 times it finally got a
good connection and held it. I had been keeping track of the IP
addresses of all my devices and the controller was always getting
assigned to 199 until that last time. Once it was assigned to 197 it
worked like a charm.

I'm no networking guru so I can't figure why it wasn't cooperating with
199. The only thing at all remarkable about 199 is that it's the last IP
in the DHCP range.

I hope this helps.

Router: D-Link DIR-655
Go to: Setup > Network Settings to reserve an IP for the MAC address of
the controller.

What file formats are you using?

I've done a few changes to the file path handling which fixed a bunch of
open bugs. No good if they re-introduced old bugs :-(.

You mean the scan didn't find them, but they would work if you played them
 from Browse Musicfolder?

Are you editing, ripping, managing these files all on that machine, or are
you using Windows or OSX across the network, using Samba?

[slim] SBC randomly rebooting

2008-04-06 Thread Mitch Harding
Ever since I moved from SC 7.0 to SC 7.0.1, I've noticed that my SBC
occasionally spontaneously restarts. It appears to happen most often after
I select a track from my playlist and hit play. Sometimes after I do this,
the SBC goes black and restarts.

I pretty much always use Random Mix, if that's relevant.

This doesn't impact the music playback, of course. And since the SBC is
booted back pretty quickly, it doesn't really bother me too much. I wanted
to bring it up here to see if anyone else has observed this. I searched in
bugzilla but did not see any similar reports. I'll probably open a bug on
it later today, unless someone points me to one that I missed.

Thanks,
Mitch

Mine tends to shut off WLAN after a while if it's not used so you

Try to remove the SD card and then SBC should find the files in the

Yes, but the key word you're using is "notably". AFAIK none of the mods
have stood up to the blind test. That means that no improvements have
been shown to do much, besides cost more, and make you feel better

Personally, if I had $250 to burn, I would buy some new CDs. :-)

[slim] Navigating music

2008-04-06 Thread herts101

Had my Duet for a few days now (1st Squeezebox!) and absolutely loving
it. Order about to go in for an additional receiver.

I have a few questions about navigating through my music which I
wondered whether anyone could help with:

1. There is lots of reference in the forums to pressing and holding
Add (+) to add a song to the next position in the playlist as opposed
to the end of the playlist. This would be cool but I can't seem to get
it to work. Is it implemented on the Duet?

2. Is there anyway to start an album in the middle and have the
Squeezebox play that track followed by all the other ones on it? (i.e.
I'd like to play tracks 5,6,7,8,9 and 10 of a 10 track album without
programming them all into the playlist individually.

3. I find it a bit risky when programming a new playlist on the
controller that if I accidentally press Play, all my hard work is
erased. I know there have been loads of threads on this and many
people feel differently but that is my initial impression.

I'd like to change the behaviour of the Play button so that rather than
clear the current playlist and start playing the track immediately, it
adds in the track as next on the playlist and then starts playing it
(leaving the rest of the playlist intact).

If that is not possible, I'd at least like it to add in the track to
the bottom of the current playlist and start playing it immediately
(again leaving the rest of the playlist intact as I can then navigate
back to it).

Is there anyway of making these changes by editing the button maps?

Thank you very much for your help.

Peter.

[slim] Minnesota Public Radio 128 Stream

2008-04-06 Thread Ralph 411

Minnesota Public Radio's published 128kb stream,
http://minnesota.publicradio.org/tools/play/streams/classical.pls,
worked on our two SqueezeBoxes until Friday. Now it won't work on
either SB, but does work on our PC through Winamp. The URL
http://205.234.179.203/, captured through ShoutCast, works at present,
but is not MPR's published URL.

In addition, the audio level of this stream recently has gone up 5 to
10 db and is now overloading both digital and analog outputs on peaks.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Re: [slim] SB3 Digital only mods - Is it worth the money

2008-04-06 Thread jsharper

Can someone help me understand the concept of tweaking/modding/improving
the digital interfacing of audio gear? Doesn't the PCM audio data
either get from the source to the DAC/receiver 100% intact or it
doesn't? And if it doesn't, isn't that a flaw in one of the devices or
the transport cable? Is the SP/DIF architecture so fragile that there
are often bit errors in the received data?

If my ethernet network started corrupting data, I wouldn't start
modding the magnetics of my ethernet cards and switches to improve the
analog signal on the wire; I'd send it back to be replaced under
warranty or throw it out and replace it with working gear.

Apparently I am missing something.

Yes - the data is either right or not. Unlike ethernet, as far as I
recall, SP/DIF does not have any error detection/corrrection built in,
however at the data rates and distances used, it shouldn't need it.
There is however an additional issue of jitter, i.e. slight differences
in the time at when each bit arrives. A decent receive-end will have its
own timebase to resynchronise the data, making it immune to normal
jitter levels. If tweaking the digital output makes an audible
difference, this is due to inadequacies at the receiving (DAC) end, and
any efforts in improvement should be spent there.

The only technical explanation for it that I know of has to to with the
j-word. Jitter. So its not about getting the same bits in and out, its
about the timing.

I've tried streaming with my mobile phone as well, and without constant
charging it drained in a few hours :) But I guess the Controller can be
charged with USB?

The actual streaming could also be done from another device like
softsqueeze/softslave/mp3-stream on a computer or embedded device and
only user the Controller as a remote.

I don't think a UI for creating and destroying a ssh-tunnel shouldn't
be too hard to make.

2008-04-06 Thread MrSinatra

exactly...

i was actually hoping the development team would internally have such a
flowchart somewhere, but that doesn't seem to be the case. in so far as
i can tell, its currently done ad hoc, and people seem to either use it
as is, or figure out workarounds.

my feeling is that a wiki chart should be setup as the reference
benchmark of how SC is supposed to work, and is expected to work.
then, when cases arise for users where it does not do so, it will be
easier to figure out if the problem is a bug, a needed enhancement, or
an issue with the users data.

at the moment, it absolutely seems to me that SC7 has a bug in so far
as organizing my music.

can some please get a wiki page started and organized into the right
place, and i and others i am sure will happily start trying to create a
linear flowchart?

Re: [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection

2008-04-06 Thread sapnho

With yesterday's software update on the controller, things "appear" to
be more stable. Let's wait and see. The idea behind the Duet is great
and I have no doubt that the problems will be ironed out, it would just
be nice if it wouldn't take too long.

BTW, to all people that have problems with the software update. I don't
know why, but sometimes it just doesn't work at all, and sometimes it
works no problem. It works great in the mornings (European time) but
almost never in the evening. Why that is...

The URL in the pls works OK for on SC with SB3
http://classicalstream1.publicradio.org

When using the pls direct there is a very very long delay.

I'd advise to contact the station re quality.

[slim] New owner, Duet - Updated software is available for this remote

2008-04-06 Thread epoch1970

Hello all,

I bought a Duet today, my 1st Squeezebox. With the well-written
documentation (which unfortunately is nowhere to be found in the
product box), I could setup my duet in bridged mode as needed. All
works well.

There is one thing bugging me: in settings/advanced/network update I
can see "updated software is available for this remote". Problem is, I
have updated the remote something like 4 times already today, and I
still have that message. The install seems to run fine each time, so I
really begin to wonder...
I don't know where to read the current version for the remote and I
can't get to a shell using ssh or ssh -1.

So, known issue, or non issue ?

(Again) not presently. But I read somewhere that the charging voltage
is 5V, so I guess it is just a matter of getting hold of a suitable
cable.

Re: [slim] Minnesota Public Radio 128 Stream

2008-04-06 Thread cooppw02

Thanks so much for the advice on looking up an alternate URL. I hadn't
even been aware that the regular URL stopped working. I've had a Duet
for a few weeks now, and have found that I listen to MPR's The Current
quite a bit.

I'm afraid that this might be an effort to lock out hardware streamers,
as I'm also able to stream the station on my computer using VLC. I do
believe I've read in some other threads that some internet radio
stations are starting to block access to hardware streamers.

As for your volume issue, I'm afraid I'm not any help. I use the
volume control on the SBC quite a bit, so I can't even confirm that
there is a difference.

[slim] Duet Controller Access to Music Folder

2008-04-06 Thread Millwood

I navigate my music collection on my SB3 by Music Folder. In looking at
the Duet documentation, that doesn't seem to be an option.

Can the Duet controller menu be configured to include Music Folder? Or
does it, even though the documentation doesn't show it?

If not, is this planned? When?

I'm considering the Duet, but this would be a deal breaker for me.

Same problem here.. If I don't touch the controller for a few hours it
has to try and reconnect. It connects back about 50% of the time. Taking
10-45 min sometimes.
