Re: [slim] Bad experience upgrading to SC7 (pops and cracks and pause)
although I was warned not to fix things that ain't broke, I moved to SC7 for SS6.5.4 because my Ubuntu 6.10 did not support a new printer and had to go for 8.04. Well, now I have the same problem pops, cracks and pauses. Since I have a high end stereo chain I almost fainted hearing these cracks fearing for my tweeters. Had to jump out of the bathtub to save them! Has this issue been fixed or should I revert to 6.5.4 right away?! Also, my playlist are no more usable with SC7. Re: [slim] Problem with itunes playlists
I've just stumbled into what I think is a very similar, if not the same, problem. I have a just built a SlimNAS that I have Squeezecenter 7 running on and all my music files copied over from my wifes PC so we can leave the SlimNAS 'ON' and access all the songs with our Sqeezeboxes. Trouble is the goal was to turn OFF the wifes PC and leave the SlimNAS turned ON, (<45w), but we loose access to our Itunes Playlists because they are stored on her PC, which is now turned OFF. We're wanting to use her PC to load songs and create playlists so we'll still be using itunes on it but I hadn't thought I'd loose access to the playlists. Anyone got any ideas about how to make itunes store its playlists on a remote drive/machine/NAS ?? -- njanda njanda's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18731 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49855 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I also do not use WMP but WinAmp. I have tried every solution mentioned here and still have the problem of albums being split into two, with the same name, by SqueezeCenter. I Use a separate folder for each album. I use WinAmp or freedb to get tags and then examine them with MP3Tag or TagEditor. The songs in the two (or even more) pieces have identical tags except for the track title and track number. It seems SqueezeCenter is using something not shown in a tag editor. Re: [slim] SBC Search hangs SC, SBR, SB, Transporter
I replaced the Duet SBC and SBR I have done no changes to the SC system, as before on SC I run SqueezeCenter-Version: 7.1 - 21967 @ Tue Jul 22 01:03:27 PDT 2008 - Windows XP - DE - cp1252 The reason to change the Duet was the ping responsetime of the SBC which was about ~20ms to ~300ms where the SBC was in the same place (about 1 meter) near to the receiver. The SBR has always ping times about 3ms to 5ms. After replacing the units the ping response of the SBC was about 5ms to 8ms. So there must be something wrong with the contoller unit. In the display it shows already full signalstrength but the pingtimes are always changing and sometimes droped out. Now after connecting the new unit for example I can change players within 3 to 10 sec, which I think is quite ok, before it tooks plenty of minutes. But, after I thought everything is nice I start again a search for "WHO" where the connection breaks to the SC. I restart both, the SC and the SBC and try to search "supertr" via interpret search, the sbc displays the different albums and after choose "all albums" it hangs the controller again. after about 20 minutes the sbc was responding again and I tried the same search... with no problem. Is that belong to the huge music library or processor which is a 3.2 GHZ Pentium with 3GB RAM (the Siemens CELSIUS Workstation runs for about 2 1/2 ongoing without any issue)? After the 20 minutes a second same search there was no disconnecting event and I got the title list of the search and can play it. I don't know, maybe somebody out there have the right idea or technical hint for what is going wrong here. What make, model and firmware are you running on your access point? Is it the latest firmware, are you sure it has properly implemented PSM? If disabling PSM on the Controller improves the ability of your Controller to connect to your Squeezecenter (ie. disabling PSM improves overall network connectivity) then it seems pretty obvious that PSM is the problem, and there's a good chance it's your router that has a stuffed up PSM implementation. Correctly implemented PSM (both on the client and the access point) should not noticeably impact network performance but it will significantly improve battery lifetime on the client. There's always the possibility that Slim Devices have implemented PSM incorrectly, but since the introduction of PSM on Nokia hardware almost 12 months ago it has _always_ turned out to be a flaw in the access point for anyone that has experienced network problems, so much so that Nokia introduced the ability for the user to turn off PSM on the client (on the understanding that this is to the detriment of battery life - there's nothing Nokia can do about [EMAIL PROTECTED] access point firmware). I genuinely think you're wasting your time replacing the Slim Devices hardware at this stage - if possible, try another access point. I agree that turning off PSM is an unacceptable solution, but there's nothing anyone here can do about faulty router firmware (assuming that it is the router, which I'd put money on). Only the manufacturer of your router can resolve this problem (or try after market firmware if it's available). There's a Nokia bug on PSM problems 'here' (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1636) which references some access points with known PSM problems. Discussing this further really is futile unless people include details (make/model/firmware) of their access points. The Controller is now part of a wider and non-Logitech/Slim Devices system, yet when battery life is poor in the Controller the focus is only on the Controller hardware leaving the likely culprit (the access point) to go undetected. -- Milhouse Milhouse's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=928 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47190 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Duet Wireless Network Problems - Possible Solution?
I have an open case with Logitech about this issue. In my case, after not using the SBC remote for a while (overnight, typically), it cannot connect to my Squeezecenter box. 2 things work reliably to correct this: * disable the powersaving mode on the SBC--it almost never has a problem then. * turn off/on the SBC remote. I doubt my issues are about problems in the power save mode for my router because the SBC controller can be pinged and I can log on to it remotely from the Squeezecenter computer. It just doesn't connect to Squeezecenter even though it's on the network. Turning off powersave mode is unacceptable as a workaround because the battery drains extremely quickly--it won't last more than a couple of hours off the cradle. At this point, technical support is offering to replace the hardware, but they don't have a root cause--they're guessing too. -- mikelee999 mikelee999's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17310 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47190 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Last.fm. Why do they allow Logitech to use their service with no ads?
IIRC, the only ads you see are on the website (if you're not a subscriber). As snarly says, there was talk of audio ad breaks but hasn't come to anything yet. Perhaps it explains why there's a lot of focus on the web player in the new version of the site, rather than the standalone player. Some people seem to think DVD and Blue Ray are on their way out much sooner than they are because they are just looking at it from a technological point of view and missing the differences between the markets. It's partly due to technical limitations like net speeds etc, but its also a generation thing. Music technology trends tend to be driven by the young - at least most people that listen to music on the move are young. But thats not the case with movies, its a much broader generational thing. And i know many people of the age of 50ish who are still just getting into DVD, let alone Blue Ray etc. Of course i'm generalising a lot here, but it mostly true. [slim] Last.fm. Why do they allow Logitech to use their service with no ads?
I'm perplexed about the Last.fm revenue model when it comes to hardware players like the Logitech stuff. If you use Last.fm via their web site you get stomping great animated adds directed at you. If you use Last.fm on your Logitech devices there are no ads and, as Last.fm publish their api freely on their web site and appear to invite third parties to hook into it without asking anything in return, no apparent way for them to gain any revenue. It can be seen that very few people become paid subscribers (maybe because the advantages of this are minimal) so how does the service work? Are we to expect streamed audio ads inbetween the music soon? Personally I can't see any other way the service can make a profit. It worries me as I can't listen to music with ads and I love Last.fm.. . but maybe, as I'm a paid subscriber already I'll avoid the ads I think that might be it! Any thoughts welcome. Re: [slim] CNet: It's official: Audiophiles are over CDs
I certainly think packaged media for audio are on the way out. Hi-def video discs will take a bit longer to be superseded - assuming that's what people actually want. Most people are happy with DVD - a resolution which is eminently downloadable. But if you want the content of a BRD, you will be waiting a while at current net speeds. My expectation is that BRD will be a lukewarm success, not because of the death of packed media, but because people just don't think they need it. Stick a good scaler on the end of a good (not $50) DVD player and you can't tell the difference really. I think most people will get their hi-def from other sources - downloads ultimately, but in the meantime from satellite, cable and digital terrestrial. --R -- relen Radio Riel - Real radio; your reality http://www.radioriel.org/ (partially) powered by Slim Devices relen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50035 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] CNet: It's official: Audiophiles are over CDs
I've never understood why some people still go so fuzzy about vinyl. During my original studio career I was trained as a cutting engineer - definitely in the Dark Arts Department - and I never liked what I heard back from my discs or anyone else's if I had the original master tape to refer to. I think vinyl lovers tend to be people who've never heard what the music really sounded like in the studio. (Exception: if you record/mix/etc specifically intending to use the "sound" of vinyl as part of the effect/experience, then it probably DOES sound like what your production team intended.) I still like CDs (I'm not an audiophile). I tend to buy the discs and rip 'em, cos then I have control over the rip quality. iTunes downloads, for example, tend not to be as good as your own rips, even if the data specs are the same - goodness knows why: carelessness? Once ripped, though, the CDs go into storage boxes under the bed. I do buy lossless downloads, eg FLAC files from Magnatune.com or Jonathan Coulton's site, say; and sometimes lossy ones if I have no option. Ultimately I imagine everyone will offer lossless downloads and I will happily leave CDs behind. The software used by content providers to upload material to iTunes already includes lossless capability. Technically, I find the very, very best CD players (so far out of my range I can't imagine) are still, right now, better than the best file playback I've heard. For example, in my view a Meridian* 808.2 trumps a Transporter (it's several times the price so it ought to). But that won't be true forever. The basic deal with audiophiles generally seems to be that they like the LAST great technology not the current one. So for them to like something it has to have been superseded. --Richard E *I work for them so I'm biased, be warned. -- relen Radio Riel - Real radio; your reality http://www.radioriel.org/ (partially) powered by Slim Devices relen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50035 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] CNet: It's official: Audiophiles are over CDs
Good thread. I still buy CDs, and will continue to do so until the stuff I like is available as a lossless DRM free download. So for me that's loads of Americana (for want of a better word) - Bon Iver, Silver Jews; stuff like that. For the moment the best quality I can get is ripping it myself. As soon as there's a good download solution for all my tastes CDs are gone from my life. TBH things the quality of the Amazon service would be fine for my amp/speakers, but at least I know I've made my rips as future-proof as possible doing them bit-perfect lossless. Agree with the comment about finding it easier to find things on a server based system - I love being able to put all 15,000 of my tracks on random, I love all of the internet radio I can get for free with my SB3, I'm very excited about MIP / LastFM radio & scrobbling which are my next things to play with! Can't do that on a CD player. I did a big move round on the PC t'other day. SB3 was off for a couple of hours while I shuttled files around. My wife desired music. She used the CD player, and I realised that was the first time it had been switched on in about 4 years, since I got my first box, an MP101 (I know, I didn't know any better...) As for putting the movie collection on the server, AppleTV is a fantastic solution. I don't want to wait 2 minutes while the DVD menu loads. I don't (personally) want all of the extras/menus. I want the film, which is where AppleTV wins out for me. iTMS is great when used with AppleTV for movies and TV shows. Same DRM restrictions as for music, of course, which may or may not be a problem depending on what else you'll use your films for. For me, it's great. TBH if you're ripping your DVDs you could always rip them to MPEG and have a dupe library of MPEG-4 / your format of choice. 1TB drives are down to about £90 in the UK now, so the server approach, at least for me, is the way to go for everything I listen to or watch. -- moley6knipe Win XP Pro SP3 > dBpoweramp Reference 13.1 > SqueezeCenter 7.1 > 2 x Squeezebox 3 > ears moley6knipe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10014 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50035 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Nostalgia I guess... ;) +---+ |Filename: slimmz4.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5524| +---+ -- shabbs [shabbs] *Rip/encode:* 'EAC' (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/) v0.99 prebeta 4 [secure] w/ 'Lame' (http://www.rarewares.org/mp3.html) v3.98 [-V 0] *Audio:* 'SB1' (http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_squeezebox.html) --> Technics SA-DX1040 --> customs; 'SB3' (http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_squeezebox.html) --> Yamaha RX-V661 --> JBL E30's shabbs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6016 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50228 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] CNet: It's official: Audiophiles are over CDs
i think cd/dvd is a fantastic long term backup solution. sure, eventually we'll all have terrabyte raid storage in our homes standard, but i have peace of mind knowing i own the album, (or whatever), and i frequently enjoy the booklets info in them. -- MrSinatra www.LION-Radio.org Using: Squeezebox2 (primary) / SBR (secondary) / SBC - w/SC 7.1beta - Win XP Pro SP3 - 3.2ghz / 2gig ram - D-Link DIR-655 MrSinatra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50035 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The SBR updates itself AFAIK. Also there is an IR remote under the SBC factory test menu. For configuring or updating the SB3's you need the supplied IR. > 2) Why can't a Squeezebox Receiver (SBR) be configured for a > non-wireless connection without having to resort to a third party (i.e. > non-Logitech) script (SBR Configuration tool)? > It can be configured with the controller. A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50180 Question: Which Random Mix do you use most often? - Random songs - Random artists - Random albums - Random years - No preference, I use several more or less equally I used to have it on random song but found it rather annoying when it plays just the intro track of a song then jumps on to something else. Also I don't like it jumping from something chilled to heavy techno etc. (I can't be bothered to set genre filters) Now I have it on random album which is great as it forces me to listen to some albums I've hardly ever played. If I decide I don't want to hear the album its chosen I just select random album again. -- Trevor Trevor's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10977 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50180 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Duet eccentricities: Firmware update and configuration. Why??
I know there must be good reason for what seems to me to be oddities/eccentricities in the SqueezeBox Duet system. If anyone know whats they are I'd appreciate any enlightenment offered. 1) Why is it not possible to action a player firmware update from the Squeezebox Controller (SBC) and instead have to find a remote to do it? 2) Why can't a Squeezebox Receiver (SBR) be configured for a non-wireless connection without having to resort to a third party (i.e. non-Logitech) script (SBR Configuration tool)? Re: [slim] Duet - wireless SB Receiver problem - Help!
I'm guessing a Factory Reset on the Controller would also have worked, allowing it to pick up the Receiver. Had you tried that? -- Skittler Dave.
