Question: How often do you have hard drive failures of your music
server?

- 1 or more a year
- 2 or more in mutliple years
- Never
- All the time

After 20 years in IT I have also seen the odd drive fail.

For my music I have a second drive that I keep out of the computer.
(Except when doing backups.)

As my collection and drive capacity grows I kept my old drives too. So
a 1TB collection is also on a second 1TB, a 750/250 and 4 250s.

I'd personally hate back everything up to 100s of DVDs I wouldn't have
the patience. Also the cost of an extra HD is small compared to the
total cost of the hifi and music collection.

Re: [slim] iPhone application

2008-07-29 Thread pippin

Dean,

hmmm, your links actually support the view that you can NOT have an
open source iPhone app.
However, in this case it's not the main point. The main points are:
a) You can of course openly publish your own code. However, most people
will use Apple code and libraries which are covered by an NDA alongside
the license agreement
b) Since you usually cannot build your own app but have to go through
the App Store the usual OpenSource distribution model breaks apart. And
then there is no way to guarantee that you will be able to distribute an
app through the app store.

I I currently trying to figure out a way how you can manage that NDA
thing so that you can at least have a forum for people who have signed
that. Need to find time to REALLY CAREFULLY read those things, though.

Re: [slim] iPhone application

2008-07-29 Thread gsamsa

I am one of the multitudes working on a native app. I shared an early
version of my code with Jörg (Pippin), though I've made more progress
since then. The app is actually pretty useful already, though a number
of large chunks of functionality are absent. I'd be happy to share my
code with others as well...at least privately for the moment.

I've been using the CLI via sockets, rather than JSON, and I think it
works very well. It's quite fast, running on an ipod touch, although
the one thing I'm not doing yet is getting all the tracks (that's
probably slow). Not sure that's absolutely necessary, though. I suspect
CLI is the way to go (I haven't used or even investigated JSON before,
though...maybe it's just as good).

Is the NDA the same thing as the license agreement you agree on when
downloading the SDK ? Or is the NDA a separate thing only to those
paying the $99 to be able to distribute the binaries through AppStore
?

The Apple license it pretty clear that you can't re-distribute binaries
of your application besides through AppStore, but it is a bit less clear
regarding if you can re-distribute your part of the source code. Of
course, the problem is the NDA part which don't allow you to publish
stuff regarding the SDK and I guess you could interpret it as a
violation if you publish source code, which indirectly would be an
example of how to use the SDK, which isn't permitted by the NDA.

I think the restrictions in the Apple license may be there for similar
reasons as the restrictions in the Logitech SqueezeOS/SqueezePlay
license. Although the license prohibits some things, Apple is probably
not going to hunt you down unless you do something that really hurts
Apples business. I personally have a hard time too see how developers
collaborating to build iPhone applications which is distributed through
AppStore would hurt Apples business.

It will be interesting to see if the WordPress iPhone application
developers is allowed keep publish their source code or if Apple will
convince them to remove it.

I really wish the iPhone would have been surrounded by the same open
source philosophy as we have around the Squeezebox products, but I
guess Apple is Apple so that would be a bit too good.

2008-07-29 Thread bpa

The DOS window can made to appear when you have enabled some sorts of
logging (player.source I think) as it is helps debugging.

The other possibility may be some sort of system specific configuration
such as a transcoding app property although I don't know specifics.

More details on your system and versions such as version of Windows,
version of SC, file formats, transcoding app being used, have you
changed any of the conf files.

How SC is configured to run - service, login etc. ?
How do you start SC from systray , own bat file etc.?

2.1 Confidential Nature of SDK
The SDK is Apple Confidential Information and subject to the
confidentiality obligations of this Agreement. Distribution of
Applications created with the SDK is not permitted absent a separate
agreement with Apple
5.1 ...You further agree not to disclose or disseminate Apple
Confidential Information to anyone, or to discuss anything about the
Apple Confidential Information with anyone, other than those of Your
employees and contractors who have a need to know and who are bound by
a written agreement that prohibits unauthorized use or disclosure of
the Confidential Information,...

My understanding is: If you've got a closed group of developers who
have either
- signed that agreement
or
- have signed up on a mutual agreement that ensures confidentiality

You are fine. Open discussions or open code disclosure are not.

I really wish the iPhone would have been surrounded by the same open
source philosophy as we have around the Squeezebox products, but I
guess Apple is Apple so that would be a bit too good.
Well, it depends.
Of course it would be good if they were as open about their systems.
But on the other hand, they DO provide you with a lot of support stuff
which the SqueezeStuff is not so particularly strong at: Documentation,
commented sample code, libraries etc. In the end, they're a bit
bigger...
So if you go WITHOUT all that, you should be able to share your code
freely. But I don't think a lot of people do so, so far. You would have
to build up a whole open source framework first, which you can't, since
Apple's limited license breaks GPL so you cannot use anything published
under GPL, at least V3. That's one of the reasons why I use LGPL on
iPeng, GPL is way too dogmatic. And with Apple thats two rather
dogmatic parties hitting each other then...

Re: [slim] iPhone application

2008-07-29 Thread blaaaaaaah

Hi guys

Thanks for all your responses, wasn't expecting that much !
I looked a bit to iPeng .. a lot of work have been done, great work ! I
think it could be a great start for a native cocoa touch port.

For all the license/NDA stuff I agree with pinpin when he says that
Apple won't shoot us down for that. They simply don't want a parallel
distribution method. But we can easily go with a private svn for the
moment.

BTW, does anyone have a key for the Appstore ? I've the one of my work,
but we won't be able to use it to release the app.

For the moment I have the very basics stuff :
- List of folder/tracks tree, ability to play or add to the current
playlist a song
- View of current playlist.

TODO in priority :
- look feel of the lists (with buttons and so on)
- currently playing song screen (with working volume bar and so on)
- caching mechanism : i'm running squeezecenter on a linkstation and
it takes ages to load the whole folder list.

I really think we should follow Apple's UI guidelines so maybe we can
take the iPod mobile app as example.

So guys, what are the next steps ? :)

Interesting one. See this tread for more discussion about this:

What are you using to process the JSON/RPC? Own code? BSJSON?,
json-framework?

How much have you looked at iPeng? It does so a lot so there's quite a
bit of artwork already that is close to the iPod mobile app UI but
takes into respect that SC can do a bit more than the iPod (Playlists,
love/ban stuff, more shuffle modes, favorites, synching of players,
that kind of stuff)
I also have a UITableView controller that does Album Art and has a +
icon on the right like the iPeng browse page.

I will see whether I can set up a private svn on my server. I think a
registration that includes accepting a mutual NDA would do WRT to the
Apple license.

For the JSON I'm using SBJson (from Stig Brautaset) for the
deserialization and some custom code (using NSURLConnection) for the
transport.

How much have you looked at iPeng? It does so a lot so there's quite
a bit of artwork

Only looked at the screenshots, and yes it complies to the UI
guidelines :)

I'll try to do some work on my side to have something showable by the
end of the week. If in the meanwhile you can set up a SVN, we would be
able to share our sources (if you want to).

I'm yet another (almost) 20 years IT experience person to post in this

don't disagree with them at all - raid is a good option.

However, in my home setup, where I'm in the fortunate position of
having several machines (I guess that's not that uncommon these days),
I just run a scheduled nightly copy using Windows own robocopy software
to another drive on a separate machine. The initial copy takes a while
if you have a big collection, but with the right command line switches
in place, subsequent copies only update changed files, keeping the 2
drives in sync in a matter of a few moments.

Re: [slim] Is SC7.1 officially released?

2008-07-29 Thread dsendecki

Cool! Guess it's time to upgrade!

What's the received wisdom — is it best to uninstall through add/remove
programs and then install 7.1? Or might I just install 7.1 over my old
installation without removing anything?

Any help would be appreciated — I run Windows Home Server if it
matters!

Re: [slim] Problem: Ethernet appears disconnected.

2008-07-29 Thread jma

I actually have tried it both with and without DHCP. No luck either
way.

Yesterday I spoke with Support. After describing the steps I had taken
so far I was escalated to Level 2. He read over the case, confirmed
that I was getting the problem during network setup after doing the
factory reset, and then said I would have to send the unit back for
repair. My guess is that there is a problem with the Ethernet port on
the SB. I had an email with my RMA number less than 30 seconds after
the call.

Thank you for all of the suggestions

Re: [slim] Wake On LAN Issues

2008-07-29 Thread Peter

I am currently using my squeezebox as a wireless bridge for my shuttle
pc (windows xp and also my slim server), which works a treat except for
one thing. When I wake it up with the squezebox remote using Wake On
LAN, the PC boots up fine but says that the 'ethernet cable is not
connected'. I then have to reboot the squeezbox by holding down the
red power button on the remote for it to connect.

Any suggestions why this is happening and what can be done to stop me
having to reboot the SB everytime. Obviously the cable is correctly
attached, otherwise it wouldn't wake it up in the first place.

You have just a cable running from the SB to the shuttle PC? Try
inserting a network switch, that might help.

In my experience, once an SB3 loses its ethernet connection, like when
you remove the cable or reboot the switch it cannot reconnect to the
network. This is quite a hassle and, frankly, it's the only network
device I own that has that problem (and I own quite a few).

[slim] Wireless Bridge Yamaha Network Receiver

2008-07-29 Thread spinaltap

Here's a strange one to solve, one that even technical support cannot
fathom (but they thought you guys might have the answer)...

Before I bought my SB3 I routinely listened to internet radio via my
Yamaha RX-V2700 Network Receiver - connected to an Apple Airport
Express (N) via ethernet (which acted as an ethernet bridge) that
received streams from my Netgear DG834N router. Moreover, no problem
was encountered in setting-up this system.

I purchased the SB3 due to the inflexibility of the v.Tuner software
inherent in the Yamaha receiver. That is, stations such as
SmoothJazz.Com could only be heard at 44kbps via the Yamaha and with no
option to seek a higher bit-rate stream.

Reason suggests that the SB3 would act as a wireless bridge to for the
Yamaha unit in the same manner as the Airport Express. You might
wonder, why bother? In response, the SB3 blows the internal Yamaha
internet radio out of the water - but I'm a dog with a bone between his
teeth; I would simply like the Yamaha receiver to work fully as it did
before.

The problem is that the Yamaha will not make a connection with the SB3
working as a wireless bridge in the same way that the Apple Airport
Express did. To ensure that the wireless bridge in the SB3 is working
normally, I borrowed a Windoze laptop and switched-off its wireless
functionality. Connected via ethernet, the SB3 acted as normal as a
wireless bridge.

The MAC address (and ip address) of the Yamaha and the SB3 have been
entered into the Netgear router's set-up pane - as usual - but no luck
in making the vital through-connection.

Any ideas?

Be careful about plugins.

A lot of plugins have specified version checking only to run on 7.0.x
which may mean editing plugin files to get them active on 7.1.

Some plugins such as AlienBBC have minor functionality changes and so
there is a different version (currently beta) for 7.1.

[slim] Beware of 7.1 upgrade

2008-07-29 Thread audiogene

As some already pointed out the new official release 7.1 of the SC
looks like a half-baked snapshot probably released under management
pressure (or is it plain ignorance?). Following the current discussions
on the beta board there are so many open issues with this version branch
and it is hardly imaginable that they all have been solved over night.

The converse is true. Installing 7.1 over a 7.0.1 which was running
without *major* problems led to a complete oblivion of all artwork
icons in list modes! During the migration of the database files all
artwork files in the artwork cache were erased. There is no way to get
the artwork back - neither by a rescan, nor by physically deleting all
cache files and doing a fresh scan.

This time I am really upset, - relevant bug reports in the 7.1 branch
have been being discussed for weeks but nobody did take them seriously!
Do you guys have any quality assurance plan? Or is the internal
spaghetti logic of the SC software inscrutable even for the gurus
meanwhile? Yes, there is no comprehensible control structure in the
code, side effects generating side effects, etc etc. Isn't it high time
for a redesign?

Well ok. Having spent hours over hours with the always evolving Slim
product since version 3.x I am really frustrated now. If the SONOS
system did not have the size limitation of around 40.000 songs I would
have switched long time before. At least I am happy to have postponed
any further investment in Slim hardware by now.

Gr...

[slim] Audioengine 5 installation

2008-07-29 Thread Lesu

So I am now the proud owner of a pair of Audioengine 5 speakers. I'm
currently running them in using an SB3 on random play. The next step is
to install them in the room intended for them. I have searched the web
but I can't find a definitive answer on how to mount them, especially
because they need to be mounted at least 6-12 from the wall.
The manual recommends the use of speaker stands. However, the speakers
don't appear to have any means of fixing them to a stand. Most of the
stands I have come across appear to just rely on gravity to keep the
speakers in place.
I have visions of one stray nudge of a stand or speaker sending the
speaker to an early grave on my solid tiled floor.
Also, how do you guys out there with powered speakers on stands connect
and position the SB3? I have thought of securing it to the top of the LH
speaker with velcro or similar.

That is exactly how most speakers on stands work, they just sit on top
of them (often on a set of three metal spikes). Ideally you fill the
stands with something heavy like sand so that they don't wobble when
you nudge them and therefore the speaker is less likely to topple.

the release notes also make no mention of bug 8001 which was fixed by

so is it an oversight, or do they not list every bug addressed

Re: [slim] Beware of 7.1 upgrade

2008-07-29 Thread audiogene

Phil Leigh;323832 Wrote:
It can't have erased artwork...temporarily not having it in its cache
 is rather different.
I would expect a full clear/rescan to fix this. IS the real problem
that you are having scanner issues?

In 7.0.1 all artwork found during initital scan had been written to the
Artwork subfolder in the Cache folder. Artwork not present there
would not display in list modes. 7.1 erased all files except from two
entries for the system placeholder files for missing cover art.
Consequently no artwork is displayed in list modes under 7.1.

When playing a single album its cover art would be displayed and
inserted into the cache.

A rescan (even a full/clear rescan) does not help - as I already
pointed out.

This behaviour is well known with the developers and there are
discussions about weighing of importance in the bugs board (with regard
to the grafics oriented user interface of the Duet).

I should add that my music collection is made of single flacs with a
corresponding cue file plus a file cover.jpg (700x700px) in a
hierarchical directory structure, - so, absolutely straightforward, no
embedded art.

drive:
\genre_1
\artist_1
\album_1
CDImage.flac
CDImage.cue
cover.jpg
\album_n
\artist_n
\genre_n

some months back, i went from 7.0 to 7.1

when i did, this did not happen to me.

i would suspect, this is not happening to a lot of people.

so the question is, why is it happening to you? is there something
specific about your setup that would cause this?

secondly... would it be possible to simply uninstall everything fully,
and start over with a clean install? would that fix the issue?

Indeed it didn't happen to me either and I'm now on 7.2...

Anyway, as I said it hasn't erased your artwork (ie your many cover.jpg
files), simply deleted them from the cache - which it should in a full
rescan - and for some reason hasn't replaced them. My guess is that
something is messing up the scanning process at the crucial point when
the artwork cache is populated...

[slim] Any better NAS performance?

2008-07-29 Thread Splatter

Hi all,
A while back I was using my SqueezeBox with slimserver installed on a
Linkstation II NAS. The performance was pretty horrible though, even
only using it from the Squeezebox itself.

I was wondering, have the latest 7.X versions improved anything? I read
some improvements in scanning speed, but that wasn't my main problem,
using it was. Or are there any other lighter music servers able to
serve the SqueezeBox? If not I might give a shot at making a very light
simple basic server which would make SqueezeBoxes usable with slower
NASes. The famous last words how hard can it be? :P

Cheers,
Kalle

Re: [slim] Rhapsody Direct is now 192kb ???!!!

2008-07-29 Thread andyg

Lossless, maybe in 5 years when everyone has fiber? :) I dunno, I don't
really see streaming going past 256k any time soon. It's also a large
task for Rhapsody to re-encode millions of tracks into a new format,
not to mention the storage increase. Rhapsody has something like 10-15
formats stored for each track.

Re: [slim] Any better NAS performance?

2008-07-29 Thread aubuti

I've been running slimserver/SqueezeCenter for 2+ years on a Linkstation
HG (128MB RAM, 266MHz PowerPC processor), which is comparable to your
LS. The performance on 7.x is pretty much the same as on 6.5.x.
Scanning is a separate process (since 6.5.0), so it is possible to
listen to music while it is scanning the database, which it couldn't do
in 6.3.x.

In my experience, the LinkStation works fine for its critical purpose,
which is streaming flacs to multiple SBs around the house. The music
plays just as fast as it does on some brand new Core Duo 3GHz screamer
;o) Where the LS is slow is on (1) scanning and (2) the web ui.
Scanning time doesn't bother me, because I only do it when I add music
or edit tags, and I can do it in the background. The web ui is slow, so
I tend to use the IR remote or the Controller. In fact, the SB
Controller is a huge advantage for NAS users, because the software is
custom-written for SC, (rather than being a generic http interface),
and because some of the processing requirements for the interface are
transferred from the NAS to the Controller.

Trying to come up with a very light simple basic server to feed a
slim client sounds like quite a challenge, but go for it!

2008-07-29 Thread igroucho

On the download page the headline says:
Download the new SqueezeCenter 7.1.0

and further down it relapses into New SqueezeCenter 7.0.1 features.
So what's new 7.0.1 features gotta do with anything?

The download page shows 7.1.0 downloads available for Win, Mac, Linux
and version 7.0.1 (SqueezeCenter_7.0.1ntgr2.bin) for Netgear. At what
point will the Netgear ReadyNAS version of 7.1.0 become available?

It's available in the nightly downloads:

Installed today with no hiccup (except for the re-scan...)

Surely they would have a lossless master library that they can
re-generate the lossy streams from. Not doing that would be complete

OMG, that was it! While I had noticed the problem in the log I did not
