By your use of language, it isn't clear to me that you understand what
a "front" is. The RIAA is the recording industry lobbying
organization. Every industry has one, there's nothing special about
them relative to the hundreds of others. Most large companies conduct
their own lobbying efforts in addition to participating in industry
group projects.

I suspect you and I are on the same side of this issue, the approach
for internet music royalties makes no sense. But the biggest dog barks
the loudest, and RIAA has won this one so far.

Try reading post 10 Phil.

Also, there are at least two later posts in this thread praising the
fact that the problem has been described at last!

Wouldn't have expected any change in behaviour between the two. But I must

OK, my bad, I should looked before posting.

The InguzDSP plugin is compatible with SC7, It doesn't say if it has
been updated for 7.1 yet though. Must plugins can however be made to
work just by changing a config file telling it to run on 7.1 instead.
The wiki page needs a little editing.

Isn't there supposed to be some sort of a surprise built into the

could be Napster too... or maybe the whole secret thing is just a

Most startups not only experience one or more significant market or
"paradigm" shifts along the way to adulthood, but in fact the better
ones cause them. That's what management is for, to successfully direct
and alter strategy to deal with changes in the world.

Paying for something that you then give away for free is not a business
model. I don't care what you pay for it, advertising will not support
the giveaway. I have no specific insights, but I would bet most
internet music sites these days are walking wounded, or worse. The
problem is not royalties.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy them too, but my guess is that most of them
will not be around long term.

They haven't until now. I used an Internet radio station as an alarm

Looks like the InguzDSP plugin hasn't been updated in a while then.
SlimServer is the old name for SqueezeCenter, it was changes for v7.
Significant changes were made to the plugin architecture for SC7 so the
plugin will need to be updated to make it work with SC7.

Use 'softsqueeze' to listen to Squeezcenter on your computer. You can
sync the 2 players with button on top right corner of SC.

On SC, on the left towards the bottom there should be 'extras', click
on that and you'll see 'softsqueeze' download info. Or just type
'softsqueeze 3.6 download' into your browser, and you'll find it. Good
luck.

I haven't had any issues, though *normally* the Controllers are each
controlling different players. BTW, the Controller configurations are
largely independent, so if you want behavior like always using the same

Silly boy. The RIAA, which is just a front for the big five labels,
wrote the DMCA law, which effectively outlaws anything that doesn't give
the labels lots of money. While I was not doing professionally when
Sound Exchange was invented, I bet it was also effectively "chartered by
Congress" at the behest of the RIAA.

DOJ only enforces laws that Congress passes.

That Congress has shown no interest in even reading the laws that the
RIAA ghostwrites for them, is not really DOJ's fault.

Re: [slim] MusicIP causes to become Miscellaneous

2008-08-18 Thread brawny

Hi All,

Not to be alarmist, but...

I believe I may have an issue of genpuid actually deleting tags when
analyzing my library.

I apologize if this is somewhat off-topic, however, it does match the
subject line of the thread, as the symptom I see is that a number of my
albums that were correctly tagged previously now have blank tags in the
album, genre and artist tags. When viewed in SqueezeCenter, these
blank tags are showing up as 'Miscellaneous' in the respective tag.

I believe this was caused by genpuid, based on how I've analyzed my
library, following the wiki instructions here:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Integrating_MusicIP_with_SqueezeCenter#Option_1:_Using_Genpuid

In particular, I used the 'archive' feature of genpuid to create
ANALYSIS and FINGERPRINT tags.

Code:

  genpuid [dnskey] -r -logex -m3lib=cache.m3lib -archive .

My guess is that along with writing these two tags specific to MusicIP,
genpuid altered some other additional tags (ALBUM, GENRE, and possibly
ARTIST as well). On some tracks only one of the tags was cleared -
most often the ALBUM tag, but sometimes both ARTIST and GENRE or ALBUM
and ARTIST - there doesn't appear to be any pattern.

My library is approx 20K FLAC with vorbis comments only.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this?

I've replied to an existing thread on the MusicIP forums to check with
the folks there. The forum link is:

I saw the Iphone at 1200 and the touch at 500...I can dig out the sites
if that helps, not saying they are necessarily right, but that's what my
research found.

Ignoring screensavers for the moment, what do you find not intuitive and
obvious about Now Playing? I assume we are talking about SqueezeBox now
playing screens, and the Now Playing standard remote button?

Press the button and it shows the now playing screen. Erm, isn't that it?

Maybe if someone could describe the problem, we could all chip in with some
suggestions and see where we end up?

How about press-and-hold Now Playing when in browse menus shows the currently

I have no idea whether what you say about the sizes is true or not. But
the same certainly can't be said about the battery capacity.

The iPhone has a larger battery capacity at 1400mAh compared to the SBC
at 1250mAh. The Touch is about the same as the SBC.

So to expect the SBC to last as long as that when streaming over wifi

Re: [slim] 7.1/7.2 fails to remember previous menu position from Now Playing screen?

2008-08-18 Thread Phil Meyer
I do frequently change my mind on what I want to play, and thus navigate to
play other stuff.

However, I just as frequently want to use the now playing screen, eg. to see
more detailed information on the currently playing track. In fact, as soon as
I start playing something, I tend to navigate myself to the Now Playing screen,
rather than wait for the screensaver to jump me to it.

Also, I use TrackStat plugin to rate the current song I am listening to, by
press-and-hold 1-5 keys. If the "jump back on wake" screensaver was used,
press-and-hold 5 whilst looking at the now-playing screen would instead jump
back to the browse menu and initially jumps to items beginning with J (when 5
is pressed), and then start to play my favorite stored in position 5 (when
5.hold is detected). That wipes out what I was previously playing.

I've done this a few times recently, due to changes in the alarm functionality
in SC 7.2, and found it infuriating that there was no clue on the screen as to
what the next keypress was going to do. So I found myself pressing
right-arrow, followed by left-arrow to refresh the screen, removing the
screensaver to return me to where I was (which may have been the Now Playing
screensaver when I had manually navigated to that screen). Only sometimes a
menu may not have a right-arrow menu action, so that would be ignored and and
left-arrow would go back a level.

People have different requirements, which is why there's always been an option.
The text for the options has changed; the options are now more sensibly named
Now Playing or Jump To Now Playing. I think you are saying that Now Playing is
also doing a Jump To Now Playing?

Thanks.I read that this plugin requires a lot of processing power. Is
my Dell work station 690 with 1.60 Hz Xeon processor and 2GB ram
adequate for the task? I don't mind buying an external EQ like DEQ2496

[slim] Runaway Volume

2008-08-18 Thread markbieg

I sent the following message to Logitech Support, but I really want to
konw if anyone has experienced this problem:

When pressing the volume up button on the SBC and then releasing the
button, the volume continued to increase out of control. Then in a
panic to turn it down, the same problem occured as the volume continued
to decrease after releasing the button until all the way down. This
problem happened twice now in two completely different situations. The
first time it happened when using the SBC with the SBR on one audio
system. I thought it was a fluke. But, a few days later it happened
again on a different audio system with the SBC controlling a SB3. It is
not simply a "delayed" response of the volume when holding down the
volume button (as I have experienced many times), but a quick press and
release of the volume button (to attempt to turn up volume just a notch)
with the quite shocking and loud result of "runaway volume".

Thanks. Mark.

[slim] SqueezeCenter Performance Suddenly Got Worse

2008-08-18 Thread steves4567

I have run SqueezeCenter for more than two years, and the system was
running extremely well. Then at some point a couple of months ago, the
update performance of SqueezeCenter on my client became dramatically
worse. I am running the Fishbone skin, although I see the same problem
with Default. When I enter or delete tracks from the playlist, the
update may take more than a minute, and the playlist will be blank for
most of the time. Either or both of "CONNECTING..." and "LOADING..."
will be displayed at the top of the Playlist pane. The upper data in
the Playlist pane is usually delayed by a few minutes, and the Artist
displayed is often several tracks behind. Switching pages in the Album
or Artist pane can also take 15-60 seconds.

I am running SC on an HP MediaSmart server, which runs Windows Home
Server. My main client is a Dell Latitude D610, and everything
including the SqueezeBox is connected over a 100MB wired Ethernet
network. I have seen the same performance problems from another
identical Dell machine, and also running the browser directly on the
Server using Remote Desktop. I have had some problems with ports dying
on my Ethernet switch, so I replaced it with a new one to no effect.
For a few days quite a while ago I noticed that there would
occasionally be a 10-20 second delay at the start of a track, which I
assume was the buffer of the SB filling, but that went away before I
changed anything else.

I generally run IE7 on the Client machine and on the Server, but I have
also tried Safari on the Client, which is a little faster but still much
worse than IE7 used to be. All of this (particularly the poor
performance running the browser on the Server itself) leads me to
believe that the problem is in the SC software and not the network.

I was running SC 7.0 when this started. I have since tried 7.1 and am
currently running a Beta of 7.2 - 22343, but none of the software
changes have made any difference. Each time I performed a complete
removal of the oldversion before installing.

When I decided to debug this problem, I looked at the log file. I
noticed that I get the following sequence of Error messages every few
seconds to every few minutes (the spacing is much greater when music
isn't streaming, but the errors still occur every hour or so). There
are a large number of "frame" lines with more data after the second of
these three error messages, which I believe is the "backtrace". This
varies in length, from 17 to 46 lines.

I noticed the same issue when Pvconnect was automatically installed by
the MediaSmart upgrade. I went to Add/Remove Programs on the Server
(via Remote Desktop) and removed Pvconnect, and SqueezeCenter began
working again. This can also be done from the WHS Console, in Settings

In the beta forum, it was suggested that Comodo firewall, etc. might be

However, I'm not sure what I should be telling Comodo is a safe

Perl executable, per se, in the installation. Has anyone had this

[slim] Another can't open Slimserver question . . .

2008-08-18 Thread liffy99

Setup;

Slimserver 6.5.4 on QNAP TS201 NAS, connected to PC via wireless router
(i.e. router is ethernet cabled to PC and NAS plugged into one of the
router ports).

NAS IP is 192.168.2.4
ROUTER is 192.168.2.1

All IP addresses in the 192.168.2.nnn range are enabled in the router
software.

I use Zone Alarm and have ensured Slimserver is in the Trusted Zone
(I've also enabled the 9000 and 3483 ports in the Windows firewall as
exceptions).

SB3 plays just fine and I can see all my music files on the NAS via a
mapped drive.

BUT I CAN'T ACCESS SLIMSERVER VIA THE WEB INTERFACE.

I used to be able to but haven't been near it for weeks and nothing
much has changed PC wise. I've pinged the NAS but get no response,
despite being able to access the mapped drive. Surfing the web is fine
so I can get to any other website.

One strange thing I've noticed is that even if I turn the Windows
firewall off, the status button still says it is on !

Slimserver is obvioulsy running but I can't acces it for configuration
etc.

Any ideas ?

As I said that a CD was not recordable for 15 years was the main
advantage of it. It was smaller and more portable than an LP and still
not recordable.

I'm not sure I understand what you don't get. CDs were not recordable
for 15+ years, SACDs were never recordable, DVD-A were only slightly
recordable. This is how the labels wanted it.

The labels are not artists, musicians, recording studios, etc. They are

I don't get this. Surely, the main difference between LP and cassette
was the recording capability of the latter? To replace the compact
cassette Sony created the mini disk (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini_disk ) and Philips (who created the CD
together with Sony) came up with the (horrible) Digital Compact Cassette
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Compact_Cassette ). So the
inventors apparently hadn't noticed that their CD was aimed at the
cassette. Sure, the CD was much more portable than the LP, but it
wouldn't be recordable for a long time, which is rather important for
some people ;)

Peter

A Controller is a powerful computer. Its got tons of ram, fast
processor, SD card, color display, built in WiFi. It actually amazing,
its got the power of a desktop computer of about five to eight years ago.

Sadly no. Hotshield is a web based vpn. SC outbound streaming traffic
isn't proxied through the browser so makes no use of Hotshield.

If it'll run an hour or two, I'll be good for what I want it for. If
I'm on the treadmill any longer than that, my heirs will get it :-)

I would think they would come up with a large capacity battery to help
offset the useage.

It's typical Logitech IMO, it's neither attractive or not attractive -
a little minimal, functional and dare i say 'bland' (bit nt in a really
bad way)- the safer option i guess. Being logitech, i can just tell
already what the plastics will feel like. But it's perfectly fine for
me, i hate show piece designs that no matter how much i like them at

I really hope the speakers in this are shielded from mobile phone
interference.

I made the major mistake of buying this http://tinyurl.com/5m48vg

Since I do on-call from work, I need to keep a mobile phone on the
bedside locker, but cannot leave it anywhere near the JBL on-time or
else I get a blast of the mobile's "phone home" chatter in the middle
of the night amplified through the JBL speaker. I have to put the phone
on the other side of the room.

Also the alarm function plays the first song on the iPod. Waking up to
ABBA every morning is not a good way to start the day.

So this looks very tempting.

[slim] Issue with Album Artwork & Podcast Images in SC 7.1

2008-08-18 Thread ShutterShock

I have one of the early Duets. I loaded SqueezeCenter 7.1 over the
weekend and have noticed the Controller no longer consistently displays
album artwork. (BTW, I have the album jpeg image located in the same
folder as the album’s flac files). Also related to this, I find the
Controller won’t display Podcast images consistently. As a ‘visual
person’, I’d actually appreciate having this capability – even for
podcasts.

If I power-cycle the controller images load somewhat reliably but over
time, they only appear intermittently.

I’ve confirmed the images are loading in SqueezeCenter, so there’s
something stopping them from 'being sent' to the controller. Any
thoughts?

I am only running 11 plugins and I am at 133,000K for SC. I also have a
large library. SqueezeTray seems very big on my system at 15,216K and
Mysqld is at 17,972K. Another memory issue to consider is how much
memory your IE is using if you have the WebUI open. Including IE if the
WebUI is open would give you the total memory footprint of having Music
playing.

Squeeze on your system is just over double the amount of memory use as
on mine. So with all the active pluggins you have listed, one would
assume that the plugins are where the differences are. I think MC is on
the right track by suggesting that you disable a good number of plugins
and see how much that affects the memory usage total. I need to figure
out why SqueezeTray is using more memory on my system when I never use
the thing anyway.

Re: [slim] Music Library and SC memory usage

2008-08-18 Thread ModelCitizen

It is noticeable how the web interface speeds up if you only use a
subset of your library (as I sometimes do for testing). I imagine the
RAM footprint might be affected by the size of a library but have not
personally noticed any change as the size of my library has increased.

If you want to know for use if the RAM usage is affected by library
size why not make a subset of yours and see if usage changes?

The plugins are definitely known make a difference to memory usage
(hence my suggestion), but I've not heard of any documentation
detailing the individual RAM usage of plugins (and would be dead
surprised if any existed).

Mr. Citizen,

I suppose that I could try doing as you suggest but that wouldn't
answer my first (and at least to me, more important) question regarding
the correlation between the size of one's music library and the amount
of memory used by SqueezeCenter. Basically, I feel that SqueezeCenter
and large music libraries do not play well together, i.e. slow response
times, increased(?) memory usage, etc., but I've yet to see any
acknowledgment of this by anyone else here on the Slim Devices forum,
especially by anyone directly associated with Slim Devices, and I'd
like to know if my suspicions are true.

More to the point, does there exist some kind of accounting which lists
the various plugins and the their respective memory usage? Plus, does
the size of one's music library also have an impact on the memory usage
of the various plugins?

[slim] Duet Controller, Transporter and Amplifier Volume Control

2008-08-18 Thread newy

Ah, here you all are! Forgive me if you have read this post before but
I just found this forum after posing my question on the Beginners and
DIY forums. Here is my situation.

I have a Transporter w/ the volume output fixed at 0db. I have a Duet
Controller. I have a Cambridge Audio 840v2 Receiver (with IR IN
jack).

Question: Can I control the Receiver's Volume Up and Volume Down
functions using the Duet Controller and an IR Blaster coming out of the
Transporter and/or having the Transporter's IR OUT jack connected to the
Receiver's IR IN jack via a mini-mini cable?

I have been told this is not possible but would like to see if anyone
on this board has had any success using an IR Blaster with a SB3 or

Thanks!

Crikey. 300mb RAM usage. That's a lot!

I am worried that 7.2 and MusicIP has increased my memory footprint but
SqueezeCenter currently uses a max of 130mb (and MusicIP another 30mb).
I should stop worrying.

I am running XP and my library consists of:
Total Tracks: 23,746
Total Albums: 1,790
Total Artists: 863
Total Genres: 58

Why don't you try disabling all your plugins and see what happens to
memory usage... and then just add in the ones you actually need and
have a look at which ones that increase your RAM usage?

In a related thread

memory footprint was discussed but after reading through the thread I
failed to see any mention of what correlation exists between the size

What, if any, is the correlation between the size of one's music

How can one reduce the total memory usage? And what plugins are safe to

[slim] Squeezebox v3 /QNAP / Airport express

2008-08-18 Thread mangs

I have been running my Squeezebox v3 for almost two years now and I'm
very happy with it. My current setup in my house is a computer running
slim server connected wirelessly to an Apple Airport Extreme. This
computer is placed in the home cinema which means that in this room the
sound card from the computer is the audio source. The Airport act as a
router in my home and is connected to the internet. I have my
squeezebox in my living room connected wirelessly and even though I
send the information twice ove a wireless link it works really well.
This Squeezbox is connected to the main stereo and will offer sound in
most of the house but I have been playing around with the idea to add
squeeze boxes to more rooms.

I have now ordered a QNAP 107 that will act as a NAS and will be
running Slimserver so I don't need to have the computer running 24/7,
this will be direct connected with a ethernet cable to the Airport
Extreme. I will put in a 750G harddrive full of music in FLAC/MP3. I
have also bought an extra SB v3 that I will have in my either my office
or master bedroom. This stereo also have a connection to the batroom so
I can access all my music when I'm taking a bath. I will also have this
one connected to my headphone amplifier so I can listen to music in the
bed.

I have also got hold of an Airport Express that has an audio out to be
used with Itunes. My idea is to include this in the setup and use it as
a dumb client in the gym stereo. This will let me at least listen to
music but with the backdraw that I can't change the music in that
location.

I have also thought about buying the Squeezebox duet which will let me
use the system remote to change music wherever I am.

Hmm, that about my setup, my question is, do you know if it's possible
to stream music from the QNAP on to the Airport Express? I know that
there should be a workaraund from I-tunes if you run it on the same
machine as the Slimserver?

I think the setup with the QNAP sounds really tempting since this will
bea quiet and small 24/7 soultion so that I always can listen to music
without booting a computer. It should be great if I also can include
the Airport into this, do you have an idea or suggestion of a smarter
set up for me?
Thanks a lot in advance!

No surprise there then. :-)

tended just to line up albums and hit play. The Now Playing
functionality was not too much of a problem for him either... mainly
because he didn't spend much time using the UI!

I find I am making use of the new services (like Last.fm) and radio
(Alien BBC and Shoutcast) now, and listening to my local music
collection less and less. The current Now Playing (dis-)functionality
has become much more apparent when using these modern services. And
only one reason is because I end up using the UI much more frequently.

To me, it looks to me that Logitech are focussing more and more on
integrating these (new?) services into SlimCenter and also that their
usage is increasing pretty quickly. This should increase the urgency of
sorting out the Now Playing area.

...I have to admit, once I got through the initial problems, I really
like this little box. :-)

...I really like Pandora more for the older stuff. I set up old R&R,
Motown, blues, etc.. It's ended up causing me to buy a bunch of old
stuff that I would have never remembered and purchased.

Whatsa rubber biscuit anyway :-)

I think the name change is a good one, but it did confuse me for a few seconds.

I'm in the other camp - I actually like it jumping to Now Playing, rather than
returning to where I was. As I leave it running for some time, I can't
remember where I was, so jumping to now playing screen means I always know
where I am, and if I revisit the browse page, it remembers the menu options I
had previously navigated to.

Very true. Although the Controller was a huge step up in complexity
from any of the previous products, so the open discussion and beta
testing was invaluabl as far as i can tell. It's the "fatest" device
they have built, running a full linux OS with the SqueezeOS interface
on top. Quite a bit different from the embeded nature of the other
devices. Also, the Reciever wasn't spoken about until the official
release either.

Re: [slim] stopping at end of track

2008-08-18 Thread aevans

Had the problem again this morning and i had been syncing over the
weekend. Went into squeeze center and unsynced (softsqeeze was in the
list but not actually running or connected).

After the unsync, everything was fine so it looks like this is the
problem.

It's generally accepted that SqueezeCenter runs better on Linux, it also
works fine as a Windows fileserver which would seem to cover your needs.
Obviously, you don't have any experience with it, which is a valid
reason to stick with XP, but please don't claim it runs *better*. In
fact on a 256 MB PC as this one Linux without X would be far superior.

I don't see why this shouldn't work, really. The whole idea of bridging
is that two networks are joined into one. Remote desktop or VNC should
just work. Perhaps you configured something wrong in XP. In this case I
wonder if you can access the Fit-PC from your other systems at all. Can
you access the SC web interface? Can you access the disk via Windows
networking? If not, then your setup is seriously broken IMHO. If you
can, remote desktop and VNC should work also. There's nothing magical
about those protocols.

Peter

Agreed. In fact as you move into Server-land it *is* for a large part a
Linux world!
OTOH, a Windows server behind a (NAT router) firewall that doesn't
provide services to the outside world doesn't really need to be updated
regularly.

Another good point. In fact, as I've pointed out before, you could still
use a controller to drive softsqueeze in a PC-only setup.
