This is a very common problem for the Transporter and this upgrade. I
agree entirely with the poster. There should be some obvious warning
(and help) with the for Transporter users with this software/firmware
upgrade.

sure..one data point.
Some of us recall the bulk of data.

It was also on 7.2 roadmap. It's a roadmap, a plan.
The point is that it's not a spec on a box, which is what some folks
tend to build from just roadmaps.

u run SC7 on your home machine with the music.

then, use a router that has ddns. you can then get to your SC7 via the
ddns addy with :9000/ after it. (you might also have to use ip port
forwarding so that the SC7 machine is the one port 9000 goes to)

at that point, all you have to do is tune a software player into the
:9000/stream.mp3 ddns addy, assuming you started some music going on
the server.

Sounds good that it is fixed in 7.3.

The reason that i am press-holding the back-button is, that i'm used to
using the back button to go back to the main menu/hom screeen. I've used

SqueezePlay is a desktop version of the controller software.

A "working" jack already exists. Playback of audio on the controller
is, for all I've seen, a desire. Never promised as an official
supported feature, but open to work from third parties or maybe
eventually something official if something feasible comes along.

I can see how SqueezePlay and audio on the controller may be loosely
linked, but they are very different platforms with very different
capabilities and scalability.

Re: [slim] Announcement: a new PSP skin

2008-09-11 Thread tmarti

Pilot and other PSP skinners, I just merged a couple of my efforts
together into a single skin called "Mobile". I basically took my PSP
skin and modified it to be more compatible with the iPhone & iPod
Touch. The Mobile skin retains all the features and capabilities of
the original PSP skin - although there are some minor changes to the
"Now Playing" screen. Check out the Mobile skin at:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=339509#post339509.
Moving forward, I'm going to make all-PSP specific changes to the
Mobile skin, so please switch over to that if you want to stay
up-to-date on modifications.

Pilot, thanks for your recent post. I'm investigating now.

[slim] Angry about Tranporter + SqueezeCenter

2008-09-11 Thread tygar

I have been a long-time customer and evangelist for SlimDevices/Logitech
-- I've bought at least 8 SlimDevices products and currently use a
Transporter as my main listening device.

Today I "upgraded" to SqueezeCenter 7.2 after having used successfully
used various SlimServer 6.5 versions. And, like many, many Transporter
users on these boards, my Transporter promptly died -- freezing up when
it tried to play any song.

And thus, I began my hunt for problems. I spent several hours tracking
things -- not thinking that SlimDevices would have released a firmware
upgrade that kills their high-end product.

It was very frustrating -- I found a link suggesting I force a xilinx
reprogramming step. That did nothing.

Finally, I found a post suggesting a factory reset. It didn't tell how
to do it that. Here is how. With your first hand, hold your
Transporter. With your second hand, plug in the Transporter. With
your third hand (apparently, this reprogramming system was not designed
for mere two-handed humans to actually use) hold down the ADD button on
the remote.

That fixed the problem. But I was angry. I paid $2000 for
SlimDevice/Logitech's top-of-the-line product, and I just had to waste
three hours of my life because SlimDevices/Logitech didn't bother to
warn me that the firmware upgrade would kill my system.

Now if my situation were unique, perhaps I could more easily forgive
SlimDevices/Logitech. But I see that many Transporter owners have
similar problems. I don't see why SlimDevices/Logitech isn't warning
owners. It shouldn't be the case that one needs to hunt down in the
forum just to perform an upgrade operation.

I am sure that in their own good time, SlimDevices/Logitech will fix
the bug -- but given that forum posts suggest it has been present for
several months, perhaps that fix will come sometime in 2009 or 2010.
In the meanwhile, SlimDevices/Logitech should warn Transporter users --
on the download page -- about this problem. There is no reason for a
company to treat its most avid users with particular scorn.

I hope that SlimDevices/Logitech takes this advice to heart, because I
would like to evangelize for the company's products in the future as
well.

Re: [slim] Announcement: iSqueeze lightweight skin for iPhone & iPod touch

2008-09-11 Thread tmarti

A couple of updates:

- my sincere apologies to Luke Redpath who has already started on a
skin called iSqueeze - you had it first, so it's yours
- I spent some time tonight merging the PSP and (formerly) iSqueeze
skin into a single skin called "Mobile". I've posted it here
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=339509#post339509 to
drive traffic away from this thread so I don't distract from Luke's
original iSqueeze efforts.
- I also cleaned up some of the PSP cruft in this version - the red X's
that MeSue notices were hangovers from some PSP-specific optimizations.
You shouldn't see them anymore in this version.

- Tim

[slim] Announcement: Mobile skin for iPhone, iPod touch, PSP, LG Dare, Samsung Instinct ...

2008-09-11 Thread tmarti

All, I've adapted my PSP skin
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35993) to be more
compatible with the vertical form factor of the iPhone and the iPod
Touch. I liked the slickness of iPeng (really rich UI - nice work on
that), but I found it to be a bit heavyweight for my liking. So I
modified my PSP skin, and I'm really enjoying it on my iPod Touch.

The new Mobile skin defaults to the iPhone & iPod touch 320 pixel
width, but you can easily edit the top of pageheader.html to select a
different device. Setting 'device = "PSP"' will give you my previous
PSP skin (which is optimized for a more landscape 450 pixels width) and
includes some PSP-specific functions like local image storing. I am
hopeful that I can add support for other devices (LG Dare, Samsung
Instinct, etc) quite easily by setting them up at the top of
pageheader.html. Testers welcome :) Much of the underlying framework
should work well across lots of small form-factor devices.

So if you are looking for something really lightweight & fast but still
full-featured for your handheld device or mobile phone, you may want to
try this out.

Thanks,
Tim

The Controller (the part of the Duet that has the UI, wheel, and
unsupported headphone jack) has all the hardware to drive the headphone
and be great. It has a serious DAC, and the Controller is actually a
very powerful computer, better than my desktop was of say 1999.

But you may have noticed that there has been a lot of activity about the
SqueezeBox Boom. And thus making the headphone jack work has not been a
top priority.

Slim Devices/Logitech never comments about futures, so we don't know
where it is in a release schedule.

You could, of course, hack some Lua to make it happen sooner. As they
always say in open source stuff, "Patches welcome"

[slim] Mommy, Why is there a server in the house?

Maybe it would be a good idea to include a copy with every Squeezebox
sold. It's hard enough to explain it to the adults who went out and
bought one of these players without realizing how they work. See
chapter 7: "Why don't we just have a NAS, like the Johnson's?"

[slim] Duet I Give Up!!

2008-09-11 Thread Spidey9534

Okay,

I looked through the manual, searched the threads and could not find
any info on this feature of my new Duet Controller. There is a ~3.5mm
plugin jack on the top of the unit near the Infrared output; what is it
for?

I feel really stupid having to ask but I can't for the life of me find
a picture, description, spec or anything else that tells me what this
plugin is for.

Thanks in advance,

[slim] Multiple Playlist Directories

2008-09-11 Thread SlimChances

Is it possible to have multiple playlist directories? When I tried this
my original directory works but the new one does not; presumably
because Slimserver under server settings has an allowance for only one
directory.
The reason I want a second directory is that originally all my music
was MP3 but I now have a new hard drive of FLAC and would prefer to
have a separate Playlist folder for only FLAC related music in addition
to the MP3 playlist directory. This is a minor matter and I can put my
FLAC playlists in with the MP3 playlists and distinguish them in file
name by an asterix or other symbol if I have to.

[slim] SB Controller: Now Playing Issue

2008-09-11 Thread balts

Hello to all!

Now playing (displaying by screensaver or manualy), is often not
right!
It stucks on some previously played song and that's it! Nothing helps
but restarting the controller. Didn't discover yet when/why is this
happening, but it happens almost every day at least once! And it is
annoying...

Let's say, I'm listening to Coldplay and "now playing" is showing that
I'm listening to Bebel Gilberto to which I was listening to 2hours
ago.. crazy :(

It seems like when player goes to sleep, then "now playing" shows
something previously played...but I'm not sure for now if this is the
only case when "now playing" functions goes crazy.

Is this a known bug?
I'm using the last firmware for controller/squeezecenter
Updated both - again on yesterday 11.9.2008.

Thank you.

This particular issue is separate from what's being described in the
thread, and I've fixed that issue in 7.3 (I may roll it back to 7.2 if
it proves to be a serious enough issue). That issue is that Choose
Player, which is removed when connected to a 1-player network, should
re-appear on 1-player networks after disconnecting from that player
(e.g., with press-hold of the back button). That is, don't bother the
user with "Choose Player" if they only have one player, but make sure
there is a means of selecting it.

Question: You mention that it happens all the time...why are you
frequently executing a press-hold of the back button? The intended
behavior of press-hold on the back button is to disconnect from the
player and server...what are you expecting press-hold of that button to
do?

cheers,

Re: [slim] Can Squeeze Box Play m4a Files

2008-09-11 Thread bpa

SC will not play DRMed files. The following applies to files without
DRM.

SC on OSX and Windows (if Quicktime is installed) will play m4a (both
lossless & lossy compression) file with any additions /changes.

SC on supported Linux (I.e. x86 based) will normally play Appless
Lossless except a bug in 7.2 has disabled this.

SC running on Linux need a application such as faad or mplayer and some
changes to conf file to play m4a lossy compression files.

Re: [slim] Can Squeeze Box Play m4a Files

2008-09-11 Thread andlauer

Hello,

It really depends on the contents of the m4a files. Squeezebox won't
play DRMed m4a files (i.e. files bought through the iTunes Music
Store). However, Squeezebox should play other m4a files, that are not
DRMed. However, SqueezeCenter 7.2 has introduced a bug (see bug report
9420), and cannot play some m4a files (Apple Lossless) in some
circumstances (when the operating system is Linux, or when m4a files
cannot be converted to mp3).

Therefore, I would recommend you to think about deleting your m4a
files. You may have bought them from Apple, and therefore not wish to
delete them. Or, another version of SqueezeCenter (the previous version
7.1, or a version yet to be released) may play them just fine.

I hope to have helped you.

Regards,

JC

this is very much on our radar, and unfortunately a difficult bug to
fix
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9362

the issue only affects the UI when you add a "Choice" menu item to the
home menu with Settings->Home Menu. You can reproduce it 100% by adding
Shuffle or Repeat to the home menu then go back and forth between
Settings and Home.

Follow the bug link above to track the issue.

That is my best guess as to what causes this. An electrical transient
could cause the PCM data to become misaligned on a particular serial
connection between two chips in the SB3. Data misaligned that way
(specifically, shifted left by 1 or 2 bits) would cause exactly the
kind of sound described. Assuming that is the cause, it is not an easy
problem to fix, but I've been kicking around some ideas.

Could the firmware just reset the system periodically during idle time,
or does it require an electrical cycling? There's no easy way to simply
reboot a Squeezebox, so it's likely nobody has ever tried that as a fix,
the first reaction being to yank it out of the wall.

The only time you wouldn't be able to get away with it would be when
playing tracks back to back, so that gapless playback isn't affected.
If someone zaps it in the middle of playing, it's probably going to be
a lot more obvious what happened and they'll be more careful next time.

This is exactly how my PC sounds if I accidentally zap it with static
electricity. Rebooting the computer resets something or other in the
sound card, I guess, and then it's back to normal.

You say you handled the SB3 prior to this happening, so I wonder if it

The only display you might be able to find on the open market is the

Unfortunately the graphic modules from Noritake won't work, and even
those are hard to buy individually. We use only the glass component of
those modules, and they are difficult to replace even if you could find

Wow, indeed, Paul.
Its easy to see there is a divide on energy concerns and I can see (and
never intended) to try and talk round individuals like Mr Dogberry here.
Your opinon/my opinion, but leave out the shrouded insults - you have no
idea of whom you post about. Happy to back up your experiences

Well, this probably explains the reason, but rebooting the controller
(for several times) did me no good. It seemed that the wireless network
connection was totally down for the receiver.

If I can reproduce it (I certainly hope not! :), I'll file a bug
report...

Thanks for the reply!

Re: [slim] Duet controller - Menu items disappeared

2008-09-11 Thread iballan

I am having the same problem. It ocours when i'm holding the
"back-button" down for two seconds. Then the controller jumps to the
"Home-screen" leaving med with only one option "Settings". It is a huge
problem since it happens all the time.

The only way i can bring back the controller to normal is factory
reset.

I'm running SC 7.2 and my controller is: Version 7.2 r2873

I believe this is the old character display used in the SliMP3 and the
SB1 (not the later SB1G).

The SB2, SB3/SB Classic and Transporter seem to use the following
graphical Noritake display: GU320x32D-3900
http://www.noritake-elec.com/3000_series.htm . 143.85mm x 14.25mm
display area, 189mm x 33mm PCB size. So even bigger.

Not a good first day or sign that they have it all in one bag. One
can't even cruise around the website because its down due to an
overwhelming first day response. How are they going to handle FLAC
downloads if they can't keep their Home Page up?!

I wish them luck, more bandwidth, and a better Web Monkey.

Re: [slim] Duet for $312.96 on Amazon

2008-09-11 Thread maggior

The seller where I got the $307 price is the same that now has it posted
as $371 - electronics expo. The OP said it was $317 - 3 different
prices in one day from the same seller. Wierd.

The idea of the controller really appealed to me to, but there was NO
way I could justify spending $400! Once I started seeing price drops
and found a new one on Ebay for $319, which is just a bit more than the
SB3 cost (well, used to cost), I was able to swallow it. My wife was
also able to accept it. And it made a nice addition to our newly
renovated kitchen and plugged nicely into my existing iPod dock Klipsch
speaker system.

With these price drops, I'm going to talk to my brother and see if he
wants to get into the game. It's good to see the technology mature and
become a little more reasonably priced.

Last night it was "ships from and sold by Amazon.com." But Amazon is
out of stock now so they insert 3rd party sellers. The one that shows
by default will usually be the one with the current lowest price, but
that is not necessarily the one with the lowest price including
shipping.

I lust for a controller, but really can't justify it.

It is a great price. I went there this morning and added one to my cart
just to see what shipping would cost. $307 is the price I saw for the
Duet.

But now the price has jumped up to $371.

I wonder if this was a mistake earlier or of the price is fluxuating
for some reason.

Strange.

Too bad I already have one and I just added a receiver.

Re: [slim] Duet controller - Menu items disappeared

2008-09-11 Thread bklaas

a reduced home menu typically means you've lost contact with your player
and/or SqueezeCenter. Not sure of the cause, but that's what's
happening.

If you can reliably reproduce this issue it'd be very helpful if you'd
open a bug at http://bugs.slimdevices.com. Be as thorough as possible,
including reporting what versions of SqueezeCenter and Controller you
are using (on the controller, Settings->Advanced->About, then look for
the number represented by r, where is the version number).

Also, I doubt you need to do a factory reset when this happens--
instead just reboot the controller. It strikes me that there's no
reason to wipe preferences when this occurs.

cheers,
#!/ben

Re: [slim] SqueezeBox Duet - missing fast forward

2008-09-11 Thread maggior

I found that if you press the FFWD button and hold it for a second and
let go, it brings up a progress bar that you can adjust with the scroll
wheel to move around the file. My library are mp3 files and it works
quite well with them.

I always liked the way the iPod did this, and the SB controller does it
this way now.

Good luck.

Re: [slim] Exporting a playlist

2008-09-11 Thread Siduhe

It shouldn't make a difference that you're running on SS.

If you save the playlist in SS, it will automatically create a .m3u
file, so long as you have given SS a Playlist folder to put it in. So
collate your list of files that form your playlist and press save in
the SS window. The location of the Save button may depend on which
skin you are using, and it's been ages since I used SS, but should be
somewhere up towards the top centre or right of the right hand pane.

Give the playlist a name and then save it.

That should create a .m3u file with the same name in your playlist
directory.

Let us hope.

Question: how does one assign static IP addresses to the Duet
components (SBR and SBC)? I have doen that with the SB3, but not with
the Duet, which doesn't seem to offer that option during setup, rather
asking which receiver and then which server to connect to as part of

Re: [slim] SqueezeBox Power On Issue - Constantly Trying to Connect to Suspended SC

2008-09-11 Thread Gibbo

I posted this last week, I was told that it was a change due to problems
with people not knowing if the server had lost connection due to the SB
reverting to the same black screen as will be shown if you just have
the clock display turned off.

ie the change has been implemented as if someone has set a wake up
alarm and the SB loses connection they will now be made aware as the
screen will show the box trying to connect.

Its annoying for me as I have a smilar av setup, i've reverted to
connecting to squeezenetwork when my av setup is turned on but the
computer is off, this way I get the clock rather than the repeatedly
refreshing connection screen.

Re: [slim] SqueezeBox Power On Issue - Constantly Trying to Connect to Suspended SC

2008-09-11 Thread ShadowWar

Further to my previous post, 7.2 installed new firmware. I think this
may have been the problem in combination with the non-functioning
plugins; however, dropping the firmware back down to the previous
version made no difference, and I'm now running f/w 112 with the old
build of 7.2 (nightly, that is). Ultimately, I think the resolution is
to install an old nightly build or 7.1, then check your plugins are
up-to-date (or disabled). Then update to 7.2 stable or newer.

I had the same problem when In installed a nightly build of 7.3. I went
back to the stable 7.2 but had the same problem, then eventually
reverted further back to the last nightly build of 7.2 I'd been
previously running. In my case I think it may have related to some
plugins which weren't updated for the new screen size for Squeezebox
Boom. I was running an older version of Michael Herger's
MusicInfoScreen, and SuperDateTime as my "off" display. Haven't
advanced back up to 7.2 stable yet, but I may do that at the weekend.

Re: [slim] Debian nightly build - favorites stopped working

2008-09-11 Thread GoodVibrations

By "stopped working" I mean the playlist isn't being populated.

When I press the "play"-icon for a certain favorite, the playlist is
cleared, but not populated again.

Eg. in the main menu I choose Random mix, and it works fine. The
playlist is populated and it starts playing.
If I then go to favorites and chose Random mix this way, it's not
working.
Random Mix and Favorites afaik aren't 3rd party plugins.

I use Dynamic PL and Trackstat. Both have stopped working, either
directly or as favorites.

I have som radio-urls in my favorites. They still work.

I haven't changed any permissions or anything else. SC runs a the only
application on a dedicated Debian Etch server, that is left alone all
the time.

The only thing that's been done is upgrading SC.

Re: [slim] Exporting a playlist

2008-09-11 Thread Siduhe

Why do you need to move the FLAC files to a different location? This
will undoubtedly mess up the process using the playlist to create an
audio CD.

If you save the FLAC playlist in SC, it will be saved as a .m3u file in
whatever directory you have set as your playlist directory.

You should be able to load this .m3u playlist into a decent burning
program (I don't know Burrnn, but I can do this in Roxio or WMP for
example) and then just burn the CD.

A .m3u playlist is just a list of links to the various files, whch can
be followed by audio programs like SC. Move the files and you break the
links.

Disable any 3rd party plugins and restart SC just to make sure it is a
SC problem and not one caused by a Plugin.

In 7.1 Weathertime was a suspect.

Also what do you mean "stopped working" ?
If it means favorites are not being saved then check directory
permissions / disk quotas. Favorites are written to playlist directory
- if SC cannot write to this dir, then Favorites may appear not to be
working. Have you a playlist dir defined ? If so try changing it to a
new one which you are sure has no protection.
