[slim] Cable Conundrum
Hi all, I have what I suspect is a network cable problem but I'd be very grateful for any hints/tips from the forum (before I give up and resort to wireless, which is a fairly weak signal). Here's what I've tried: I plug my Boom into an ethernet wall socket. The cable from the wall socket runs back to a cable cupboard where it terminates and I've patched it into a Netgear unmanaged switch. When I select wired ethernet on the SB setup it does (seemingly randomly) one of two things - (a) it says the network cable appears to be disconnected; or (b) it gets past that step and fails to find itself an IP. Failing to even detect the network cable made me concerned about the CAT5e cable itself. A cable test came up fine for all 8 pins (my cable tester is just a cheap 'pin' tester, it can't certify the cable for ethernet use). I also tried an 'audio over CAT5' gadget and that worked fine. So I conclude that the copper pairs are all connected but for some reason the cable is not up to scratch - maybe some crosstalk or interference or something I don't understand. Note - there's loads of other stuff in the house hooked up to the same switch and it all works well. I've also tried changing around the ports used on the switch in case of a duff switch port. Finally, the SB connects fine if I move it to the cable cupboard and plug it directly into the switch (although doesn't work so well there as an alarm clock...). My questions are: - Can I force the Boom's network interface to 10Mbps in the hope a slower speed makes the cable usable? - Can I force half duplex or some other clever setting that reduces speed but increases reliability (I'm only using for compressed audio playback)? - Can anyone see anything I'm missing?! Many thanks! Re: [slim] Need New Wireless Router
I decided trial and error was OK with liberal return policies. Since BJ's is close to my house I picked up a Belkin N router for $50. At 8 a.m. today, it is working well. I also managed to get my Belkin repeater to work (realized in all the setup networking I had to do with the SB, that I needed to point the SB to the repeater and not the router) and am now getting signal strength of 66%! Interestingly enough, although the SB got really low signal strength with the new, fancy lynksis, the 3rd floor pc got moderate reception. With this new Belkin, the SB is doing much better (even before I connected the repeater) but the 3rd floor sucks. I'm hoping that if I replace the wireless adapter up there with an N one, that will fix the problem. I may or may not try the alternate firmware with this little Belkin - it ain't broke, yet. One of the things which I constantly read in reviews is that these devices work for a day - or a week - or maybe a year. A year seems too short, but what's with a day or a week? Maybe I'll stick to playing the piano. -- mewzshn mewzshn's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22808 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57871 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I also use a Harmony for my SB from time to time, but I must admit that I can't recommend it - not because it doesn't support the SB (it does), but because the products - imho - are bad:-( I bought it because the concept is great, but as time goes by my impression with how it works gets worse: 1) Totally opposite the Squeeze* products, Logitech has chosen a completely closed approach for development of Harmony. No open source, no chance to look behind the scenes, and no way to change or even look at the IR-codes manually - highly relevant in a lot of cases. This approach also means that once you bought your Harmony, you aren't likely to get any new features. They are only implemented in new products. 2) This could be ok if everything just worked - after all many companies share this policy - but my Harmony (895) is unstable and I am still having a hard time getting it to consistently send one code instead of two - this applies to codes I taught it myself as well as codes that are in the database. 3) The hardware quality (specifically the buttons) is not impressive to say the least. Presumably this is SlimDSP, and I understood this was done in the CPLD so that new codecs could be added. the CPLDs in each o the products are: SLIMP3: xc95144 (DMA controller, SRAM interface, bitstream output to decoder) Squeezebox1: none (relatively fast CPU connected directly to decoder - did not need DMA or glue) Squeezebox2, 3, Boom, Receiver: xc9536xl (clock selection and s/pdif encoding - more features for handling raw PCM properly) Transporter: xc9572xl, similar functions as SB2/3, but a lot more of them eg s/pdif input -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57886 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The Marantz ZS5300 looks perfect, thanks for the info. Given the room is a loft, I'm really just distributing music and don't require different music in each zone simultaneously. I dunno if Marantz has this same limitation or not. :( EDIT: Yes, the Marantz is also limited to analog inputs. In case it matters. :) This means that the catch with the Yamaha could actually be a feature. The outputs on SB3s and SBRs are all always active. I have given up on SC using my iTunes library, something got out of wack and SC can no longer find my songs and playlists using iTunes xml. I have now pointed SC directly to my music directory and all is well except playlists. I found a program that will convert xml to .m3u and it seems to work well. This is where it gets complicated, SC is on a different computer than iTunes, my music library is on an external hd connected to the SC computer. The SC computer lists the ex. hd as Music HD (H:) The iTunes computer lists the ex. hd as Music HD(H)(\\DOUG)(M:). Itunes writes the playlist file as M:\iTunes\iTunes Music\Band Of Blacky Ranchette\Still Lookin' Good To Me\01 The Train Singer's Song.m4a and SC can not find the song, if I switch the M: to H: SC can find the song. The SC computer is XP, Itunes computer is Vista. Does anyone have a solution, I really like building playlists in iTunes and the new genius feature is pretty cool. I know... I was scared of them at first too. But now that I understand them it makes life much easier, especially in Squeezebox land. They are nothing that you have to create--they already exist on your system... you just have to find out what the UNC path is for your music folder. In Vista, if you type Network in the address bar of Windows Explorer, you should see all you networked computers, then you can drill down to the folder level and it should show you the UNC path when you click in the address bar. USB relies on drivers and chipsets. Had problems with certain devices, on certain PC's, same devices are fine on other PC's. Just bought two USB sticks, on one PC it disappears, but works fine on the other. Other USB devices work fine on either, such as mice and gaming controllers. Also had couple of USB drives and sometimes act up depending on phase of the moon. Lost data and partitions on USB HD. But another USB HD with exactly the same chipset has had no problems. Do a search for Pro-Lofic 3507 USB chipset. Also problems with USB printers. Motherboard chipsets are installed on both. USB is too tempremental to trust data storage. Saving 30%-50% of the bandwidth necessary to move a file around can mean buffers don't deplete during these typical drop-offs etc. Granted it doesn't take much to stream CD WAV files around uncompressed, and if that is all you are doing it is likely either hit or miss. But once you put a couple PCs in the house on the same wireless network, a NMT streaming DTS SD Video those bits of bandwidth become even more scarce.Keep in mind all these wireless technologies are simplex as well. Thanks. For once it doesn't matter - they are both digital. Save your money for fat speaker cables! Enough said, but if you like reading this kind of stuff: Really, you either get the digital signal or you don't. Maybe, just maybe, if you have a badly wired house (that is the outlets are at different ground potential) and you go plugging your equipment in these different outlets you may succumb to ground loop problems. Then the optical toslink (aka spdiff) cable would be safer. However, someone is sure to point out that the SqueezeBox uses a wall wart and, as such, probably has a floating ground. Coax cables are easier to find and are much cheaper. And, you are more likely to find coax switching boxes in case you run out of coax toslink inputs on your stereo. On the other hand, most stereos I have see only have 1 coax toslink input and several optical toslink input. So it usually is more convenient to hook up everything using the optical cables. I've bought moderately priced and cheap optical cables. The only difference I see is that the cheap cable ends are molded on where as the more expensive ends are built form parts. I guess if you were going to un-plug and plug in your equipment all the time the better cables will survive longer. For me, the cheap ones work fine. ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

That's fairly standard for compilers. Perlapp isn't really a compiler though. It bundles the Perl compiler and the libraries used inside the exe-package and unpacks it all before running.
