Oh yes, won't happen. That was when I supposed 1.1 would be ready for
January :-)

Prio 1 is nor wo fix usability of the NowPlaying screen, this is a UI
effort so it will take time for testing and trying things out.
Realistically two months which will put us at the end of May for 1.2

Playback is a development effort. iPhone does not support audio
streaming so you have to do that yourself and integrate it with the
local playback. iPhone 3.0 offers some promising new things, fist of
all video (not audio) streaming, now you can actually use the video
facility for audio, too, so that could be an option. Will evaluate, but
I think it's a good guess that the introduction of iPhone 3.0 would be a
possible timeframe.
iPhone 3.0 also offers to be able to sell add-ons which would help me
out with another issue: some of the streams used require proprietary
codecs which I might or might not get for free. Paying for rollout of
those to existing customers is something I probably can not handle (and
don't want to: investing a lot of work to add features for people who
did already purchase a product is one thing, me _paying_ for them to
get additional features is something else) so the ability to add those
codecs as an option adds to the chances...

Hi,

I'm using squeezeslave-0.8-25-lnx26-alsa-i686 on Ubuntu 710 and I spot
that it dies on certain wav files (log at the bottom). I've also tried
win32 version and it stops on same file, works ok on others

Same problem happens when I trigger play of speech announcements made

If I make stereo file with duplicating tracks, everything is ok

What are my options to avoid that crashes ?

Thanks in advance,

Re: [slim] Annouce: New Squeezeslave 0.8 release availabe on sourceforge

2009-03-25 Thread ralphy

Unfortunately squeezeslave doesn't support mono files in any format.
Only 16bit 44.1KHz stereo streams, everything else needs to be
transcoded on SC. Or as you have done, convert the file before added
it to the library. Not sure but SC might be able to convert mono
streams to stereo using sox on the fly.

I've had several discussions on how the 44.1KHz limitation could be
removed, hadn't considered mono.

Thanks for the excellent problem report. Sorry I don't have a better
solution for you right now.

Good to hear! :-)

There shouldn't be...OpenDNS has been around a while and uses their
service as a business while your Internet provider views DNS servers as
a waste of money - something they have to provide and reluctantly do.
OpenDNS is at least as secure as your ISP's DNS, probably more so - if
it's compromised, OpenDNS's future as a business is in serious
jeopardy. That's the core of their business.

The only security threat posed by the DNS system as far as I'm aware of
is "DNS poisoning", where the bad guys redirect DNS lookups to sites
they control.

DNS converts IP addresses (not very human friendly) to website
addresses (much more human friendly). So when you type:

www.google.com

into your browser, your computer asks the DNS server "I'm looking for
www.google.com, what's it's IP address?" The DNS server responds:

208.67.217.231

So then your computer asks your router to send a request to
208.67.217.231 and Google serves you up a web page.

If the bad guys manage to compromise the DNS server by poisoning it,
your request of www.google.com could resolve to 4.2.2.1, controlled by
the bad guys!

(Don't worry, 4.2.2.1 is actually a DNS server out there so it's
harmless!)

Tip: you can enter an IP address directly into your browser, but it's
unsafe to do so. You never know where you'll end up. You can actually
type 208.67.217.231 into your browser directly, Google should come up.
Your computer isn't doing any DNS lookup if you do this and will serve
up the website a tiny bit faster as a result, but remembering those
numbers is harder than www.google.com, isn't it? However only do this
if you're absolutely sure that the IP and website address match.

The only downside I can see to using OpenDNS is that it's outside of
your ISP's network and is subject to a bit more lag time and Internet
congestion. Your ISP's DNS servers, located inside their own network,
should be physically close to you with good connections in between and
they would be fast if your ISP didn't try to cram as many users as
possible onto as few servers as possible.

Re: [slim] iPod Genius similar to MusicIP

2009-03-25 Thread Moonbase

It’s actually "Power Searches" (you need an activated key for
this, i.e. the paid-for MIP — well worth the money, btw).

When using the GUI, you’d input something like
?GENRE CONTAINS \"TRANCE\" && BPM >= 140 && BPM < 150[/B]
OR
[B]?SEVENTIES && GENRE CONTAINS \"ROCK\" && ALBUMTYPE = \"LIVE\"
into the Search field (the "?" at the beginning denotes a "power
search"). Be aware my examples use extra keywords and fields I have set
up in the MIP library.

When using the http API, these can be used like filters. See also 'MIP
http protocol' (http://www.musicip.com/mixer/httpprotocol.jsp). the
first of above could (for instance) be encoded for the API as

Code:

http://localhost:10002/api/mix?filter=?genre%20contains%20%22trance%22%20&&%20bpm%20%3E=%20140%20&&%20bpm%20%3C%20150

in order to get a "Trance Mix".

This is a very good point, indeed! I would absolutely prefer buying
FLAC files from music stores, but this doesn't seem to catch on very
well. I guess it's just too much fuzz for tech support to teach
customers to convert their newly bought digital music into a format
that is compatible with their digital music player (into mp3 that is).

So, I'll gladly start buying mp3HD:s if they start showing up.
Converting to FLAC would be no problem for me. Anything that helps
bring us lossless music purchases is a good thing, no matter how silly
the suggested idea of carrying a 10+ MB/min lossy sounding file in your
mp3 player is. So in a way, I kind of hope this will make it into the
big time. I just don't think FLAC will be mainstream anytime soon.

Actually this is provided to you automatically. Just like the DHCP
server in your router, your ISP has a DHCP server as well that hands
out public IP addresses - you will find your modem has a public IP
address on its Internet side and you can find out what your public IP
address is at www.whatismyip.com

Included in the DHCP communication are also the addresses of two DNS
servers. Your modem can pick this up and you may find these addresses
get automatically added there or in your router.

To test which servers are faster, ping them.

I suspect my rather old DG834Gv1 router that was released before the G

Re: [slim] transporter re buffering

First off, if possible, connect wired - wired is always preferred to
wireless.
Second, why are you in b/g mode? Do you have "b" devices? This may be
reducing your wireless network bandwidth. If you don't need to support
"b" devices, switch to "g" only.
If still having problems, suggest you check for wireless
interference... may want to try changing your wifi channel. Could also
try re-positioning your router to improve signal strength at the
transporter... can you put it on a high shelf... try playing with the
antenna positioning, etc.

sander;347674 Wrote:
> I'm still only a week in...

Well, five months later and I've got to say MusicIP was well worth the
effort. It has totally changed how much I listen to music as before it
was a hassle figuring out playlists or albums, whereas all I need is
one song and I'm on my way.

The mixes overall work pretty well. Starting with MusicIP mix or just
letting Sugarcube do the mixing, listening and exploring my collection
has never been easier. 90% of the time the mix stays on track, but
sometimes it can drift into a whole new genre/tempo quickly, but every
Squeezecenter interface supports MusicIp so its easy to get back on
track.

Also sometimes the fingerprinting can flag whole collections/albums as
similar, so you make a mix and its basically all the songs in the album
shuffled. I thought it was a low bit rate thing, but it extends into
some CDs I ripped myself at high bit rates so I don't know what it is.

The biggest danger/downside is MusicIP going under which to casual
observer seems to be a real possibility. Their forums are dead and
development has slowed to a crawl. Also a lot of the newer features are
only available on the Windows gui which is unfortunate. But even if they
went under the software would still work, I hope.

So one strong vote for MusicIP. It's really one of the best things
about the Squeezecenter system!

[slim] Napster - Now Playing List issue

Signed up for the Napster trial and the whole family is enjoying it.

I noticed an issue this evening while scrolling through my now playing
list on the SB controller. I selected an album with approximately 21
tracks. If I attempt to scroll through all of the tracks in the now
playing list, I can never get past track 14 or 15. At this point the
scrolling stops. If I continue to scroll forward I get the audible
feedback that I have moved on to the next track but the display does
not update. If I continue to scroll forward eventually I end up back at
the top of this list and then the display updates.

Has anyone else experienced this? Suggestions?

There is no difference from a business point of view. Doesn't matter
whether you pay for a codec (code) or access to a service that requires
a codec (data).

Re: [slim] Last.fm becoming pay-service.

2009-03-25 Thread RyanS

This stinks - yet could turn out to be a growing trend on the web
forcing us to pay to listen and enjoy the big conglomerates music.

We can all say don't listen to their music and boycott, but ppl have
said that for years and we still love/consume their content!

I think we might have to get use to paying for what we got used to not
paying for.

Re: [slim] Native AAC Support

2009-03-25 Thread ianr

Hi,

Now that AACPlus is the defacto for iTunes purchases, has there been
any thought given to implementing either native support or at the very
least FF/RW functionality for these files?
I really don't want to transcode the files to mp3 (quality loss) or
flac (takes up additional space and no SQ benefit). Like it or not,
iTMS is the largest online music source, so surely it makes sense to
extend the support, no?

Re: [slim] Native AAC Support

2009-03-25 Thread agillis

Support for various music encoding formats is one of SqueezeCenters
strengths. Because SC is extensible Plugins can make it support any
type of file. Unfortunately most NAS systems don't have the processing
power to handle plugins and transcoding. This is why I created
VortexBox to allow the playing of all types of files and the widest
support of plugins.

If you really want to use apple files I would recommend VortexBox. If
you have Apple file with DRM you will need to play them on an Apple
Device.

Where I use AAC and AAC+ is not in my own library, but streaming
internet radio stations to my SB3. My own library is in FLAC of course.
