ianr;410151 Wrote: Now that AACPlus is the defacto for iTunes purchases, has there been any thought given to implementing either native support or at the very least FF/RW functionality for these files? SC 7.3.3 will come with AAC/AAC+ support out of the box, using server-side transcoding using faad2. There will not be native codec support in the players: there is no more space in the firmware. Unfortunately, there will not be FF/RW support in this release. Note that this issue is independent of native codec support as FF/RW functionality is always implemented in SC, not the player. -- awy awy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7480 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19155 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Forward/Rewind buttons not working
Yes, no space in the firmware is the reason for no native codec. But that has nothing to do with FF/RW as this is always done on the server. Also, it is not correct to say that transcoded formats cannot support FF/RW (although that used to be the case before SC 7.3). But to support FF/RW, either SC's file-format handler for the specific format in use, or the transcoder program being used, needs to understand how to do seeking in the format. That is not currently the case for AAC/AAC+. Patches welcome (to faad2). To the OP: there should at least be a better error message (any error message) on the controller in these circumstances. -- awy awy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7480 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50308 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

We can all say don't listen to their music and boycott, but ppl have said that for years and we still love/consume their content! I think we might have to get use to paying for what we got used to not paying for. I would see this a bit more differentiated. Last.fm for me is radio, I have no direct control over what it plays, so I don't want to pay for it. Especially since Correct me, but could it be their quality has really suffered recently? I always get the same 30 artists or so, no matter what the start parameters is I set. And they don't care a lot anymore what I enter, I've already banned four Pussycat Dolls songs today, doesn't matter, they still keep coming up. I'm certainly not going to pay for THAT... On the other hand: A service like Napster where I can play what I want and which spares me buying a lot of stuff I don't _really_ want but would like to listen to once or so. For this I fully understand they have to charge since it costs record companies real money plus I get a real value for my money so I think it's OK to pay. -- pippin --- see iPeng, the Squeezebox iPhone remote, at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61752 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I couldn't have structured it any worse or made it any more confusing talking back and forth about flac and mp3HD without making any clear references. What I wanted to say was: 1. I would absolutely prefer buying FLAC files from music stores. But they aren't widely available. One big reason is that 95% of iPod users would just go What the FLAC?! 1.1 In this sense, mp3HD would make sense. Advanced users could buy it because of the lossless audio, and maybe some because it works om my iPod and hey, it says HD. The latter bunch would obviously be screwed over in a way.. 2. I don't see any point in anyone with even a little knowledge maintaining their music library in mp3HD. 3. For music stores it's a format that's directly compatible with existing mp3 players, so no one could complain about not being able to listen to it. skinny Wrote: Converting to FLAC would be no problem for me. Does copyright actually differentiate between lossy and lossless? The legacy mp3 part is not CP:ed, so why should the lossless part be? Anyway, in case they would decide to introduce unfair use stuff to the lossless portion, there would still be the CD-DA workaround. There would absolutely have to be a way of burning lossless - CD-DA for mp3HD sales to make the slightest sense. And yes, I've made my fair number of burn-rip tests to convince MYSELF (and that's well enough for ME, thank you) that I get 1:1 lossless perfect results every time that way. I could lose one or two samples (offset) in the process, but who knows at what offset they were encoded originally?! Now for the record, I don't think we need another format, since there are better ones for both lossy and lossless purposes. I don't like mp3HD. But if it becomes an easy way of purchasing lossless music, then welcome as there's really nothing right now! gorman;410221 Wrote: I wonder what's the reasoning behind keeping Vorbis native and transcoding AAC. While I don't use AAC at all and use Vorbis for portable needs... I don't doubt that the market would far prefer the opposite solution. Some idle speculation: #8226; Perhaps the AAC/AAC+ decoder would be far larger than the Ogg decoder, so there still wouldn't be space. #8226; Ogg has issues in the amount of memory it uses, especially with lower than 64bit recordings. Perhaps this is the same with AAC/AAC+? and if that's the case, broken native support is going to cause more problems than no native support will. #8226; Perhaps, even with a bug free codec in the firmware, there isn't enough processing power in the SB3/Receiver/Boom to run everything and decode AAC/AAC+ #8226; There is also the time/cost factor in implementing this codec in the firmware. I think the Ogg codec was a fairly simple port as various decoders are readily available as it is. AAC/AAC+ might need extensive reworking from faad2 to make it compatible with the Ubicom processor. I believe it doesn't have a floating point unit, so only integer maths is available. This heavily restricts what a codec can do. So as you can see, there are plenty of possible reasons why AAC/AAC+ and ALAC aren't included in the current lineup of players. Perhaps adding codecs to some future player will be trivial, and everything will be supported natively, who knows! :) -- funkstar funkstar's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19155 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I agree Magnatune have a great selection of ambient/chillout music and I quite like it. Watching them over a few years now, I think their library is quite static. It would still be nice to have some integration for - the free listen - the streaming membership - and the download membership Oh well. Maybe I particularly like that they support FLAC downloads. :-) Unlimited downloads for $10/month can be quite a bargain if you like that kind of music. @Moonbase There is already a squeezecenter plugin that makes free preview listening from Magnatune possible. http://magnaslim.sourceforge.net/ If you use 7.4 you have to adjust the maxVersion in install.xml and copy it manually to the SC Plugin folder and it will work there too, for previous versions you install it easily via the repository url. As for clues how to implement advanced features, Amarok2 is open source and could provide valuable help, and the Magantune website has also some information on services integration (info link on their homepage). I signed up for a 3 month (3 and 12 months and lifetime? is possible) download membership yesterday and I think I certainly will find enough music I like in these 3 months to justify the money I paid. The problem is, it's too transparent. Will do an update, maybe as a 1.1.1 or in 1.2 at latest. The trick would be to try to hit something non-transparent. Sorry. Chunkywizard;410315 Wrote: I am sure we have budding artists amongst us. What's the dimensions of the Icon? Also how many colours can you use? As many colors as you like, but I#d prefer something that uses my scheme colors which means: Background is 0% red, 0% green, 10% blue and the lightest foreground color is 90% red, 90% green, 100% blue. Dimensions: I need two: 57x57 and 512x512, the small one may or may not have a lense effect, iPhone does that, the big one must not have a lense effect. I've been planning to set up a little icon competition on PenguinLovesMusic.com (price: an iPod touch or an SBR, let's see) but didn't find the time, yet, to do this. saturn;410319 Wrote: Hi, just a short question. The internet radio function is not longer working in ipeng. Have you tried to use internet radio from SqueezeCenter (the web interface)? Unfortunately the error message is a bit ambiguous (another thing that will get better in 1.1), if you can use your local library it's obviously not the connection to the server. My guess would be either your server doesn't have an internet connection or your SqueezeNetwork account is not set correctly in SC. -- pippin --- see iPeng, the Squeezebox iPhone remote, at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55514 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Vote! Logitech products up for devices of the year award on Engadget
Kind of a pointless contest. Gee, wonder if people are voting for products they already own. Do the voters know anything about the competive products in their category? Doubt it. Yhid isn't really a contest. It's more about telling engadget.com, and their advertizers what their readers own or use, and might want to read about. -- eganders eganders's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=25846 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61792 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Odd power loss.
Gibbo;410268 Wrote: Hi, wondering if anyone has a similar problem to me. I have my SB3 setup next to my av receiver, the phono cable between the 2 is just about the right length which means whenever I move the receiver (obviously not very often) the SB3 moves slightly as well, when moving my stuff around the other day and hence getting to the wires at the back of the receiver I noticed that when the SB is moved all power is lost to it. the screen goes blank, I then have to kind of wiggle it around until it starts back up again? must be a loose connection somewhere. Is this a 'known' fault? I had the exact same thing happening. It felt like the power cord on my SB3 was plugged in nice and tight but if I moved it at all it would lose connection and power off. I called support and they sent a new power supply to me which has solved the problem. They were very good about it and sent it to me without having to send mine back first so that I was never without use of my SB3. I don't think taping it would help as it's in connecter. I'd give them a call. -- Nonreality -IF THE RULE YOU FOLLOWED BROUGHT YOU TO THIS, OF WHAT USE IS THE RULE.- HTTP://www.last.fm/user/nonreality Nonreality's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15723 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61811 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

So I have a personal preference for AAC over MP3. From my experience and readings on hydrogenaudio.org what you are saying is true up to about 160kbs. When you get into the higher bit rates you really can't tell any difference between mp3, ogg or aac. There may be differences in size but it's really not much at all. Try it and see. A 256 mp3 is going to sound every bit as good as a 256 aac or ogg. -- Nonreality -IF THE RULE YOU FOLLOWED BROUGHT YOU TO THIS, OF WHAT USE IS THE RULE.- HTTP://www.last.fm/user/nonreality Nonreality's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15723 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19155 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
