 missed the obvious answer:

GET OUT FROM BEHIND YOUR COMPUTER AND USE THE REMOTE!

... That's what the SB excels at: listening to your music without
having a computer in the room.

True, the IR remote aspect of the SB I like, and I have a Logitech
Harmony remote which had no trouble learning the SB remote, too.

Essentially, I know what's on the library but my wife doesn't, she also
doesn't remember, always, what artist goes with what album. She likes
the clarity of the iTunes interface. I think the SB remote is very
effective if you know exactly what you are looking for, but less so if
you don't.

Anyway, we're all spoiled ;)

I too had no idea there was a wired one till i tried to connect

i wasn't too fussed as i have just rewired the house and put what i
thought was sufficient cat5 in but i'm having difficulty relocating my
cable modem which is requiring me to use 1 of my ethernet ports in the
living room which i needed for the squeezebox. i'v got a hub i could
use but i wanted to avoid having yet another device plugged into the
mains...

anyway, i'll persevere with moving my cable modem and failing that i'll
just use a hub. if it could have taken a generic minipci wireless card
that would have made life easier as i have a broken nc6000 laptop that
i could have taken the wireless card out of. never mind

Re: [slim] Spotify on Squeezebox

2009-04-03 Thread DoomWolf

My music collection is on an internal drive, so I'm not totally sure why
it wouldn't work.

Is the drive just a standard external drive, or is it a type of NAS
device? This is from the TVersity Getting Started guide:

You can share media from network shares using the GUI or the command
line utility just like you did when sharing local media, however
network share pathnames cannot use mapped network drive letters and
instead they must include the name of the computer in which they
reside, e.g. \\george\movies is the path to the movies network share on
 a computer called george).

I don't see why it wouldn't work with a standard USB external drive
though. Only thing I can think of is to check if Windows is assigning
the USB drive the same drive letter as an existing mapped network share
(it does happen sometimes), if you have any mapped network shares that
is.

[slim] Help with organizing after ripping

2009-04-03 Thread mjohnson

I am trying to figure out a way to rip the songs off a CD in to a file
folder titled as the name of the CD. I then will put that folder in to
the proper Artist folder.

What is happening now is the songs are listed individually after being
ripped.

For example, ripping Sky Blue Sky by Wilco, I want a folder named Sky
Blue Sky with the songs already listed in that folder. I will then
send that folder the my Wilco folder.

Thanks in advance.

Most ripping programs support this semi-automatically, and allow for a
good amount of customization. What program are you using now? Also, you
should take a look at the ripping section of the Beginner's Guide of the

You could consider the use of an access point that support the client

Example: EDIMAX EW-7416APn
Probably it will not work out of the box, but you could configure it

[slim] Itunes album artwork only on first track of an album

2009-04-03 Thread gorstj

Using SC 7.3.2 on a Mac Mini (new)

I have used the option for SC to only use the itunes library to import
music. I added/downloaded all the artwork for all my albums into
itunes.

All this artwork is displayed in the web frontend of SC in the album
view. However when I add an album to the playlist only the first track
of an item has any artwork.

Is this a bug with SC or a problem with the method I have added artwork
to itunes (mixture between downloading from itunes store, already
associated with the musci from previous rips, and added manually to
itunes)

Cheers for any help

If you're using SqueezeCenter (not SqueezeNetwork) and run
SqueezeCenter on Mac or Linux *or* run the Perl version (not EXE), then
you can modify the volume steps by customizing SqueezeCenter. See

Are you referring to playback on the SB Duet Controller (SBC) or the SB
Duet Receiver (SBR)? If it's the SBR, then why not adjust the volume on
your amplifier or powered speakers? If it's the SBC then peterw's
suggestion is probably your best bet.

hardflipman - you can run two separate network connections over a single
piece of CAT5/6. Only two pairs are used for twisted pair ethernet, and
there are four pairs in CAT5/6.
There are simple dongles that convert one-to-two (you'd need one for
each end, or you can do it with a pair of punch down blocks if you're
using keystone plates and want to keep clutter down. Note that it's an
actual separate circuit so you'd need to have an extra port at the
router/hub at the far end. Also - you may slow g-bit down a bit doing
this (depends on the length of the CAT5/6.

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-04-03 Thread Andy8421

Pippin,

Slightly off topic, but have you looked at using the IR capabilities in
squeeze products to give iPeng control over other AV devices? To my
simple mind, it doesn't seem that much of a stretch.

I was wrestling with my Logitech harmony remote yesterday, which has a
beast of a touchscreen interface and thought that the iPeng / iPod type
application would be much better.

Wouldn't involve any additional hardware except for the IR wand as I
think squeeze products (apart from duet?) can drive an IR LED
directly.

The concept of a single remote using an iPod touch that was wireless /
networked across all my AV equipment sounded very appealing.

Just a thought.
