Re: [slim] Squeezebox Part Number differences

2009-08-09 Thread dean

The one starting with 8 is the part number for the Squeezebox itself,
the one starting with the 9 is the part number for the whole kit, box
and all.

Other thoughts:

1.

It is a known fact that upgrades don't always perform well in Squeeze
system have anyone experiencing mystery problems tried a clean install
removing everything SC or at least deleting the cache files ?

2.

Have anyone tried with an alternative OS install on the same hardware
?
Here is what i'm experienced years ago, my upgrade from 6.3 to 6.5 was
not good it stopped randomly so i tried 7.0 no joy could stop at random
occasions 1-2 times a week.
Did the network test 1500kbps ?

Installed ubuntu on another partition on the machine, network test
3000kbps !
wtf ? this indicated to me that it was no router or network card
problem.

My XP partition was a pre installed one delivered with my PC i have no
"real" OS cd/dvd to do installs with, only a restore partition with pre
configured stuff. For example it came pre infected with Norton and i had
never versions of Norton installed afterwards, i removed that and used
ezet for while, but i distrused Nortons removal tool etc.

There is something slightly fishy with my old XP install, as it was an
oem installed pc it does not come with the tools do something creative
about it.
It runs 6.3 just fine but no other versions. I have a suspicion that
MySQL was introduced after 6.3 or do I remember it wrong .

To rule out the OS do a multiboot install, the alternative OS don't
need to be a linux if thats uncomfortable to you, i think it's enough to
try a fresh install of something. Start without firewalls or AV
applications introduce you AV/FW of choice later and see whats
happening.

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-08-09 Thread dsdreamer

Improving the network seems necessary in your case, and I'm sure you'll
see improvements from so doing.

The jury remains out as to whether things have gotten worse due to some
regression in the software or firmware that makes up the Squeezebox
system. I suspect only a controlled experiment, with controlled amounts
of network congestion/radio interference will be able to answer that
one. The closest thing to a *user report* that could shed some light on
it is if someone reverts to 7.2.1 and gets perfect playback, goes to
7.3.3 and it's broken again, and then reverts to 7.2.1 and it stays
fixed. And as you rightly point out, it's not the rebuffering message
that is the problem, it's interruptions to playback we care about.

I suggest that anyone who has experiences that suggest the latest 7.3.3
or 7.3.4 is more fragile than a previous version post to the bug report
https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=13092. I don't think it is
particularly worth posting info to the bug that improving the network
improved the streaming experience, because that is what we'd all expect
whether or not there is a particular bug to be found. Probably, that
point has been emphasized enough by now :-)

Good luck with your network improvements; it's always a good investment
to make your network more robust, particularly in your case, since you
were already seeing issues with 7.2.1.

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-08-09 Thread maggior

I've been home a lot recently (kidney stones are so much fun!) and had
an opportunity to spend a lot of time listening to my squeezeboxes.

I have an SBR in my kitchen and in my living room (which shares a wall
with the kitchen). This is what I've been using mostly all week to
stream my FLAC library. Here are some things I've noticed:

1) The microwave oven greatly affects my SBR in the living room. I was
using Moose when my wife turned the nuke on and I noted that the signal
level went from ~60% to ~20%. Needless to say there was constant
rebuffering.

2) The kitchen SBR is known to be affected the nuke. We got into the
habit of pausing it when using nuking food. Regardless, sometimes
afterwards the SBR would continue to rebuffer randomly for up to an hour
afterwards.

3) Today it got rediculous with rebuffering in my kitchen. Out of
desperation, I rebooted my wireless router - problem solved! Interesting
point though is that none of my SB3s or Booms were affected at this time
- they continued to stream OK. ???

4) When using my SBR in the living room, Moose will randomly show the
signal drop down to 25% for up to 30 seconds. Most of the time, there is
no rebuffering! Sometimes there is though, preceded by the front light
showing "dim white" even though music is playing. Perhaps there is
something outside of the house causing interference?

5) My kids use their Booms EVERY night going to sleep. Occasionally
I'll use the microwave when while they are falling asleep. NEVER have
the Booms rebuffered or stopped streaming. One of them even has a
marginal signal of 40-45%, but never has a hiccup. Their bedrooms are
upstairs, the kitchen on the floor below under their rooms, and the WAP
is in the basement. Basically, the nuke is smack in the middle of the
router and the upstairs Booms! Yet they are unaffected.

6) I use my SB3 EVERY night to go to sleep and it NEVER rebuffers.

Conclusions
1) It is certainly not 100% conclusive, but I have a strong sense that
the SBRs are more susceptible to WiFi interference than the Boom or SB3.
If I have an opportunity to do a lot of listening again, I may swap out
my SBR in my living room with an SB3 and see how it behaves.

2) Resetting the router is sometimes necessary, even if other SBs are
not affected. *** This may help others that are having problems that
seem endless.

3) There may be a difference in the streaming in 7.3.3 from 7.2.1, but
the environment definitely is a factor. I had problems with 7.2.1, but
they seem to be more prevelant with 7.3.3. With 7.2.1, the stream would
just stop, or the track would restart from the beginning. Now it will
rebuffer and pick up from where it left off. Different
behavior...yes...but this is actually more robust behavor!

My plan of action:
1) I ordered a pair of homeplugs for the kitchen SBR - CAT-5 to the
kitchen just isn't an option. I'm tired of having to screw around with
the SBR when it gets scrambed by running the microwave. I can understand
it rebuffering, but often it gets into a state where, even after the
oven has been turned off, it randomly stops streaming. Usually this is
preceded by the light on the front going to "dim white" even though it
is still playing. Resetting the router occasionally helps, but when this
happens, where aren't the other SBs affected?

2) I will run cat-5 to my SBR in the living room. It is relatively easy
for me to do and I want to run a wire there for another reason anyway.
It's just as easy to run 2 runs as 1.

I will report back once I have these changes in place if I notice a
difference in behavior. I certainly expect that I will.

As an aside, I finally talked my brother into getting a squeezebox. He
was seduced by the SBC and went with a Duet. I hope I'm not going to
regret it and find myself on the defensive and trying to get him to
spend more money running CAT-5 or purchasing (expensive!) homeplugs.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Part Number differences

2009-08-09 Thread steve48201

The unit (I believe) is a Squeezebox3 purchased new in December 2007.
It's in the Logitech packaging, just says "Squeezebox Wireless Digital
Music Player" on the box (no model #) and has the picture with "Pink
Martini - Veronique" displayed on the unit.
It sounds like two different naming/numbering conventions were used for
the same product.

I wonder if 830-12 is the part number for the Squeezebox3 and

practical difference - the SB3 was rebranded as the Classic post

Re: [slim] Artwork for files with no artwork

2009-08-09 Thread sebage

Yes - the artwork for most of my files is usually a sinch to find. I
start with a rip from dbpoweramp (which captures most of my albums
artwork), then use Tag&Rename to try the amazon sources.

Re: Upgrades. Yes - I take that point, but it is a small extra step I
can live with to not look at the dingy grey pair of crotchets.

I had a feeling - going way back in slimserver versions (5 years?) -
there used to exist an option to choose your artwork file, if none was
found by the software. Anyone else remember that? Did I dream it?

It would be a nice idea I think.

Re: [slim] Artwork for files with no artwork

2009-08-09 Thread Justme

I had the same problem but use a third party progrm to sort this out.
jRiver's Media Center. It's a bit like the iTunes player though with far
better search facility and other additional features, and is great way
to tag songs. One feature it has is that you can simply right click a
song, group of songs or album etc and select the cover image from the
clipboard.

To get the image on the clip board, I usually google the album or
artist. It's very quick and you can even sort your music by Album covers
so it lists all the ones without cover art at the beginning.

It's not free though, but is worth the money in my opinion.

SqueezeCenter picks up all the tag and cover art changes Media Center
makes.

Re: [slim] DAC upgrade suggestions

2009-08-09 Thread earwaxer

It has been my experience that it is important to focus on what is
"wrong" with the sound you have and go from there.

If the audio is "uninvolved" it could be do to thinness or lack of
tonal depth - sometimes referred to as timber. What I noticed when I
went to a t-amp is that I got tonal depth - the notes seemed to be more
"fleshed out" rather than an emphasis on the leading edge.

Some highly upsampled and oversampled dacs that are not done right seem
thin in sound. Thats why some prefer the NOS (non oversampled) type of
DAC. Thinness is probably also an issue of an inadequate power supply on
the DAC.

Tubes add timber and depth (color) - many like that! - The Modwright
transporter adds both tubes and a beefy power supply, along with other
tweeks. Big bucks though! - almost $4K before you are done!

I have the unmodded Transporter - I really like it, but I have it mated
to a t-amp and I have euphonic caps in my maggies to add some of that
tube like sound. I am quite sure the Modwright would sound better! -
Just cant spring for the upgrade right now.

If I were looking for a DAC upgrade and had the cash I would go for the
Modwright and not look back. It is WAY more flexable that any other DAC
out there and I highly doubt you could beat the sound for less than $5K.

check it out!

He would need to find one the used market to meet his price target.

Also, I would think the only limitation of using an external DAC to
improve the SB3 comes down to timing jitter (lower quality clock, and no
way to get the said clock directly to the DAC).

The SB3 is rated to have intrinsic jitter of less than 50ps r.m.s.,
which is very good. So, if your external DAC measures well for jitter
sidebands per the Miller Jitter Analyzer, and you have a competent piece
of 75 Ohm coax, I don't see that you'd have any real weakness to speak
of. Or am I oversimplifying things?

[slim] iPod / iPhone as a receiver

2009-08-09 Thread philippe_44

Hi - Is there any plan to have application to transform an iPod / iPhone
transformed into a receiver ? I've read that porting Squeezeplay would
be rather difficult, but what I had more in mind what a simple solution
like SqueezeSlave. My use case is that I'd love to use some of my iPod
portable (battery powered) docking stations to listen to music _and_ to
sync it with my other players. A portable boom would be perfect, but
obviously this does not exist (I I can't find any solution, I'll
probably work something around with an external battery, but this is
going to look ugly). Initially, I would not even be willing to have a
fancy app on the iPod, just the receiver capability and I coudl use my
regular controller

It wouldn't take a lot to wrap that all up in a zipor rar file that you
extract after the update, overwriting the files already in those
directories.

Or a batch/script file to update everything.

Re: [slim] SC on a separate computer from my NAS (music library), bad idea for speed?

2009-08-09 Thread dBerriff

I gave up with my ReadyNAS too. It is now used as backup storage and
left switched off most of the time. I agree that it plays back fine but
part of the attraction of the SC system is rapid lookup and selection of
tracks. I found it frustratingly sluggish, especially with iPeng on my
iPod touch.

I am currently using a Dell server which was cheap (quite a bargain
actually, direct from Dell) but is big, heavy, fairly noisy and no doubt
expensive to run except in winter when it helps with the heating.

Ubuntu Server was free but needed a bit of reading before I could set
it up successfully. VortexBox looks like an interesting alternative but
I don't want to change a set up that is working well. I have given up
with Microsoft and do not want another server running on our iMac.

If I was starting again I would look at something like a Tranquil PC
(UK) although I am sure there are many alternatives. This should be
quiet enough to sit in the listening room connected by cable to the SB
and have the power to run the interface efficiently.

http://www.tranquilpc.co.uk/ [I have no connection with Tranquil - I
would just like to try one]

This will not survive an upgrade, you can pretty much redesign the

yourself after each upgrade.

For a while a was sick of that *euch* green theme in the web-UI and

Actually my main SC installation runs on a ViaC7 mini-server (today you
really should use Atom instead) which is fanless because it has no
internal HD (makes thermal management simpler).
It uses an external, eSata connected HD. This is very silent and fast
enough, I think with an atom box it would be really fast.
OS is Ubuntu.
I do backups by mirroring data to various other systems and doing
additional dedicated backups of essential data.

I've got others that are more silent but this one is pretty close to
what you want.
Actually I did run something even closer: before I added the external
HD I used a Synology NAS for data storage but that one was more noisy
and slower.
The server runs from a Flash disc but you don't really need that with
an external HD. If you do that note that using USB sticks is a bad idea,
they die after a while, you need more expensive IDE flash dongles or
real flash disks.
I've tried that, too :-)

Re: [slim] SC on a separate computer from my NAS (music library), bad idea for speed?

2009-08-09 Thread rickwookie

I've been running a ReadyNAS NV for a couple of years now and I ditched
Slimslerver on the NAS a long time ago (I needed to get AlienBBC
working). I built a server using old parts (AthlonXP 2500+) and it's
great. The experience on my SB3s is so much better.

The server runs Ubuntu Server and accesses all music from the NAS over
a 100 Mbit connection. Never had a problem, though the most it's ever
had to deal with is four simultaneous FLAC streams.

Regarding the backup thing, RAID is not a backup solution, but it does
offer protection against a single drive failure (or two with RAID-6) and
let's face it your hard drive WILL fail eventually. A backup is
different, but your collection/files are only as good as your last,
well, backup! It's usually a manual process that most users forget to or
never do. Use the USB port of the ReadyNAS to do scheduled backups to a
USB drive and you'll have a very good system. Locate the USB drive
off-site betweeen backup jobs and it's even better.

Are you saying that recording at 48kHz is not practical (I don't know
if it is or isn't)?
They do say that their programme includes live concerts/opera on
Wednesday and Sunday - and that D-Dur was chosen for this Flac
experiment because of the way that they store the broadcasts for it.
