Re: [slim] A rant towards a rescue. Needed. NOW. ... From here to where?

2009-08-19 Thread egd

Having read the comments made in this thread I'm inclined to agree with
the spirit of the intial post. I'll repeat what I posted in the beta
forum a while back: Looking at the 8.0/1 roadmap I don't see the software
making any
significant functional strides. It seems to me that there are two things
 happening:
 - catering for implementation on embedded systems
 - tinkering at the edges of existing functionality to address bugs/
 tweak features etc.

All told, when the above is achieved, we're going to have more or less
exactly what we have today in functional terms, except plugin developers
whose plugins interact with the db are being forced to move support to a
different db layer (that is if they want their plugins to continue to
 operate).

The technological aspect of the Squeezebox offering is no longer a
differentiator. The biggest opportunity that's being squandered here is
that of content, allowing users to interact with their music collections
in ways that are meaningful to them. Someone else is going to do it and
that'll herald sunset for the SB line.

No doubt many at Logitech don't want to hear the above, but I genuinely
think that is where things are headed. The hardware offerings are
continually being expanded but the front end remains pretty much what it
is today. Whilst it's good, I don't see it evolving. Folks on the
Logitech development team would do well to take a look at products like
Qsonix to get some ideas of what shape meaningful interaction with one's
music might take.

If Logitech is patently disinterested in taking SC in that sort of
direction then at least publish a comprehensive roadmap and finalise the
database structure so that adding 3rd party functionality doesn't become
a lifetime maintenance project.

I've returned to this app to see if it'll work for me now and it does!
Thanks very much Frank. The catalogue it produces from my library is
superb.

The only option addition I'd welcome is to be able to choose to have
the track listing produced in a larger font size (without needing to
adjust it via my browser's settings each time I view the catalogue). For
my old eyes the default font size for the track listing (in both Firefox

and browser font size set to normal/medium).

Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2009-08-19 Thread tme

Hi all - streaming spotify is great and all but I am looking into how we
might have a full plugin with all the lists and controls etc. On linux
I can run spotify under wine under xvfb and trace text output to scrape
track names etc and inject x11 events to control it, eg:

Code:

  $ WINEDEBUG=+text wine spotify.exe
  trace:text:DrawTextExW LHome, 4, [(28,61)-(229,79)] 8824
  trace:text:DrawTextExW Params: iTabLength=0, iLeftMargin=0, iRightMargin=0
  trace:text:DrawTextExW LRadio, 5, [(28,80)-(229,98)] 8824
  trace:text:DrawTextExW Params: iTabLength=0, iLeftMargin=0, iRightMargin=0
  trace:text:DrawTextExW LPlay queue, 10, [(28,99)-(229,117)] 8824
  trace:text:DrawTextExW Params: iTabLength=0, iLeftMargin=0, iRightMargin=0
  trace:text:DrawTextExW LAmy Macdonald, 13, [(28,128)-(229,146)] 8824
  trace:text:DrawTextExW Params: iTabLength=0, iLeftMargin=0, iRightMargin=0
  trace:text:DrawTextExW Lamy mcdonald, 12, [(28,147)-(229,165)] 8824
  trace:text:DrawTextExW Params: iTabLength=0, iLeftMargin=0, iRightMargin=0
  trace:text:DrawTextExW Lanis, 4, [(28,166)-(229,184)] 8824
  trace:text:DrawTextExW Params: iTabLength=0, iLeftMargin=0, iRightMargin=0
  trace:text:DrawTextExW Ljohn mayer, 10, [(28,185)-(229,203)] 8824
  ...etc...

then with some perl filtering on magic numbers can give appropriate
data:

Code:

  LIST: [1] Amy Macdonald
  LIST: [2] amy mcdonald
  LIST: [3] anis
  LIST: [4] john mayer
  LIST: [5] amelie
ITEM: [0] Who Did You Think I Was - Live at the Nokia Theatre / John Mayer /
4:23 / Where The Light Is: John Mayer Live In Los Angeles
ITEM: [1] Bold As Love - Live at the Nokia Theatre / John Mayer / 8:38 /
Where The Light Is: John Mayer Live In Los Angeles
ITEM: [2] Good Love Is On The Way - Live at the Nokia Theatre / John Mayer /
4:19 / Where The Light Is: John Mayer Live In Los Angeles
ITEM: [3] Vultures - Live at the Nokia Theatre / John Mayer / 5:20 / Where
The Light Is: John Mayer Live In Los Angeles
ITEM: [4] Belief - Live at the Nokia Theatre / John Mayer / 6:03 / Where The
Light Is: John Mayer Live In Los Angeles
ITEM: [5] Come When I Call - Live at the Nokia Theatre / John Mayer / 3:23 /
Where The Light Is: John Mayer Live In Los Angeles
ITEM: [6] Out Of My Mind - Live at the Nokia Theatre / John Mayer / 10:11 /
Where The Light Is: John Mayer Live In Los Angeles
  ...etc...

then injecting clicks and pops to select tracks and do searches etc is
straightforward using xdotool, eg list select:

Code:

  $ xdotool mousemove 64 190
  $ xdotool click 1

so all that remains is to scoop up all this metadata and build it into
some sort of SC plugin. Any helpers? this could also work on windows
using one or more gdi hooks - using the same plugin for both would be
great.

Edit:The wavinput pluggin, how does it work?It uses wav.

The wavinput plugin will work with Spotify although as SPotify meses
with audio, I believe it is a bit picky about how you start WavINput and
Spotify.

WaveInput makes a copy of the PCM output from Windows audio subsystem
using ther What U hear or similar feature of audio driver which means
if the Windows mangles/enhances/upsamples the audio - you get a copy of
the mangled/ehancmed/upsampled audio.

DeSpotify should be able to deliver a PCM which could be handled by the
wavin2cmd.exe app and so feed the PCM directly into SC without any
encoding - the only drawback is Spotify will have to play on same PC as
SC.

Because most people know where the major buttons (volume, etc) on their

Harmony did so well - combining the customisation options of a screen

As far as I know, the default configuration of SC is to convert WAV

in WAV format, you are actually streaming FLAC over the network to your
player. That is unless you've taken steps in the configuration to

Do you see a spike in CPU activity on the NAS at the beginning of a

CPU is spiking and not able to encode enough to FLAC to keep the stream
going at the very beginning of the file.

Is it possible to change the year into origyear ???
Because I am only interested in the origyear.

You can enter the origyear tag in the Squeezebox database with Custom

I use the year-tag for the releasedatum from the album and the
origyear-tag for the original releaseyear of an album.

I now have version 7.2.1 installed which works fine. CPU load is
between 6 and 9% during playback (this was the same with 7.3.3). Nearing
the end of a song CPU load goes up gradually. The highest peaks I
noticed was 74% - it tends to differ from song to song. I don’t know at
what value it peaked with 7.3.3.
Memory usage with 7.2.1 is 5.5%; with 7.3.3 memory consumption was
around 9%. These figures should be fine for the NV+ (even those of
7.3.3).
My NAS is still very responsive even with SC peaking at higher levels
during buffer loads at the beginning of each song. I actually can’t tell
any difference in performance during the heavier SC loads. I must say
that I’m very happy with the NV+ considering it uses a SPARC processor.

As for the streaming format: I didn’t change anything on the
configuration – so I guess I’m streaming FLAC then. In the Advanced tab,
on the File type page, WAV is set to system default.

I have since found another vagary. If you use delimters (like ; for
instance) in your tags for tracks that belong to more than one genre (so
that they will be listed in both genres by SqueezeServer) ACC treats the
whole tag as the genre (i.e. ACC lists a genre as called Pop, Disco).

Otherwise, it's really great and has provided the first useful and good

I would recommend a vertical list of IP's with checkmarks to

2009-08-19 Thread Pascal Hibon

Another update: I ran the linux top command with the –d1 option on my
NV+ to update the display every second. Then I pressed FWD on the SB
remote (to speed up the “beginning of next track” event). The highest
CPU load I noticed was 97% during this test. Again, it varies for
different songs. The upper CPU load stays there for 1 second at most.
This is still with 7.2.1. Still no rebuffering occurring.
This is certainly something to investigate further. Maybe 7.3.3 max out
the CPU usage in some occasions and so causing the rebuffering.

Bery, can you try this on your DUO? You’ll need to install the
EnableRootSSH addon http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=617. Next login to
your NAS using something like PuTTY
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ .
Username is root and psw is the same as your admin. At the linux prompt
run “top –d1”.
See here for more info on the top command:
http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l/blcmdl1_top.htm. Note that linux
commands are case sensitive. Press CTRL-C to exit the top command. And
type “exit” to close the SSH session when finished. I’m curious to see
the results with 7.3.3

[slim] Receiver automatically connecting to SC

2009-08-19 Thread htrd

I've just bought my first receiver (I'm a very happy SB3 user) without a
controller. I think it's configured correctly, using Net::UDAP. It
certainly -can- connect to squeezecenter, and plays as expected once
connected, but it doesn't always connect automatically.

In particular if I power up the computer and receiver at the same time
(from the same power switch), the receiver finishes booting before
squeezecenter has started. The receiver remains stuck on the blue light,
which means waiting to connect to a music source.

I can force it to connect by power cycling it (after squeezecenter is
fully booted), or using Net:UDAP to reset it. But surely there must be a
better way. What am I missing? What exactly is it waiting for?

I'll do that, but it does seem to me that the default font size for ACC
track listing is just too small to be very useful, even for people with
better eyes (like my young son, who also thinks it's too small). BTW. I
don't appear to be able to resize the font in IE, although I can in
 Firefox.

Otherwise, it's really great and has provided the first useful and good
looking catalogue of my music I've ever had.

 MC

Hi,

I have send you a PM with a link to download an ACC version with a
larger track listing font size. Please check it out.

I do expect issues with the print pagination as tracks are occupying
more space and may even wrap to the next line occupying two line which
ACC can not account for in the print pagination. So please play with the
print pagination settings in the advanced option screen of ACC to get
print pagination right. Let me know if this delivers decent print
pagination. Also let let me know how much pages your catalog is for me
to determine if the print pagination has been tested thoroughly.

As for the Genre question; What would your suggested ACC behaviour look
like?

Just bought one for the 1000 on ebay -- has the same ID # so should

Logitech customer support on this issue has been lousy. Emailed
customer support after 3 weeks passing after order, was told my CC

So why doesn't Logitech make this battery more easily available?

I've seen that happen too. And yes, All Software Has Bugs! Usually
though, there are release notes that will list any known issues that are
currently being worked on. That's the way we used to handle it where I
used to work.

If Logitech is releasing product with full knowledge that significant
issues exist, I think it would be a smart move on their part to do
something similar by issuing release notes.

Hmmm, that's odd.

I've experienced a situation where I would have an empty mix generated.
I stopped SC and MiP and restarted them and the problem went away.

According to the documentation, it is important that the MiP service
start before SC. Do you have your machine configured this way through a
service dependency? To see if this is the issue, you could manually
stop both services and manually start each one - MiP first and SC second
- and see what happens.

Other than that, I can't think of anything.

If I've got some music that has been tagged with two genres (i.e.

album should appear twice, once under the genre Christmas and once under
the genre Choral. Behaviour when not sorted by genre remains the same as
current.
I guess there would need to be an AAC setting for chosen delimeter.

I can see how this might be objected to by people who have tagged their
music with loads of genres and I'm not too sure what should hapen if
tracks within an album are tagged with different and multiple genres.

Thx for the feedback but I guess the print pagination hasn't been
tested. Print pagination does noting when the catalog is only viewed in
IE. However the use is limited this way as it is not portable as album
art will most often not work when the catalog is opened on another
computer. Put creating a PDF file, by printing to a PDF printer will use
print pagination as PDF's are made up out of papers. ACC inserts new
page seperators to correctly end a page. If AC wouldn't do that the page
will often break half-way cover art and track listings.

So with a greater track listing font the print pagination setting most
certainly must be adjusted to account for the greater line spacing of
the larger font. Please perform a print preview and see how the pages
are formatted.

do is a Print Preview and in the preview I adjust the top/bot/sides
margins before I print to .pdf file. With the number of pages that you
have you'll need to be patient for the Print Preview to adjust the
pagination after you adjust the margins. At least the Windows Print

reprint the catalog after I have added 4 or more CDs.

[slim] Squeezebox over mains network?

mains network connection I mean using an Home Plug adapter as a means to

All SqueezeBoxen have a normal RJ45 Ethernet jack, in addition to WiFi.
So you can plug into CAT5/6 or anything that ends up with a Ethernet

I have been using iRedtouch - an iPodtouch or iPhone app that uses a
network resident IR flasher.

1. Take a picture or use a scanner to get an image of the remote
2. Display picture on iPod
3. Define button areas on the picture (app comes with a very neat tool
for doing this)
4. Teach the system from the original remote

The system works, and I have no problems finding the buttons.

Have a look at http://www.tinbert.com/iRed2/iRedTouch

The IR flasher box is not cheap however, but seems to work well.

I use Firefox for everything else except ACC. With IE the Print Preview
show adjustable margin lines and its layout looks a lot different. In

Margins and Headers to adjust the margins so that the pagination will

I would say it's waiting for SC to start and then it's timing-out..

Re: [slim] Musicip quit working...What to check?

2009-08-19 Thread Nonreality

Are you holding the play button until it makes a mix? It almost sounds
like maybe you were using Spice's musicip addon, Sugarcube, before. If
that's on then you can just hit play and it will continue to add new
songs until you stop it. Music ip will only make a mix of x amount of
songs that you set up before hand in the settings and you have to hold
the play button, not just hit it. Are you seeing an m on the screen?
Or the option to mix from the web?

Hi just wondering how this compares to the controlworks module? And if
you have had any problems with the newer versions of squeezecenter?

Re: [slim] Open-Source Crestron Module

2009-08-19 Thread jwmelvin

I have not used the ControlWorks module, but have heard mixed things
about it. I wrote this as an exercise in getting what I want, as there
were a few features that ControlWorks didn't have when I started. I use
it daily as do a few other people I work with. It has dynamic playlist
integration, which I do not believe the ControlWorks module has. I just
added Pandora integration (partial) so that is nice too.

I use SqueezeCenter 7.3.4 and have no problems. Well, fast forward
rewind do not work. I have no idea why, except that the published
command in the CLI does not function. I expect to move to 7.4 fairly
soon, and when I do, I will fix anything that needs it in the module.

I'm most interested in having a few people try this and tell me what
could be better about it.

Re: [slim] Love My Squeezebox! What's The Equivalent For Video?

2009-08-19 Thread Ozz

They dropped the price of the PS3 to $299US and PMS (PS3mediaserver) is
free. I find it works pretty good IF you rip your content in acceptable
formats. PMS will transcode on the fly, you need to have a decent server
to do a good job but now days that is not hard to come by. I use the
same server to run SqueezeCenter and PMS and they seem to work fine
together. If you are going to stream 1080P movies you need to run it
wired at 1GB and not wireless. I have 40 movies ripped in .mkv files
along with MPeg4 files. It works great and looks good. It also streams
FLAC and transcodes it albeit not as well as my Transporter, but it does
support DTS and other 5.1/6.1/7.1 audio streams.

It is early in the development phase but at this point I could not be
happier for the cost.

For what it's worth, I just released a new version of KidsPlay that
lets you change the behavior of the button on a Receiver.

Yes, it makes a big difference if you have fixed IP addresses. If the
OP had used fixed IP addressing, he would not have this issue, (or least
that's what I found with my SBRs).

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator v1.5 (ACC)

Glad the GUI now displays correctly. Did you perhaps select an

give it a try. Let me know the results please...

Frank - sorry for the tardy reply. Yes, the output folder is on the
same drive but the FLAC files are on a different drive on the same PC.
However I did a bit more digging and found a setting in IE
Tools/Internet Options/Security/Custom Level 'Access data across
domains'. The default is 'Disabled' and I set it to 'Prompt' and sure
enough a prompt appears when I use ACC. Now I can create a catalogue and
I will try playing with a few of the options.
