Have you seen the Squeezebox Touch announcement, isn't this more or

Every language has its advantages and disadvantages, one of perl
advantages is that it's pretty easy to support different platforms and
it uses less resources than for example Java.

It would take a lot of work to develop something in another language
with the same functionality as we currently have, so even though I'd
also like the server to be in something else than Perl I also understand
why it isn't changed.

off the box. basically, a small SC server box with other possible uses,
(and even optionally a SB client onboard).

That would basically be a Squeezebox Touch but without the display.
Seems like a very logical next step, but probably not until the Touch
has been released. The question is just how much hassle it will be to
setup a unit without a display and no web interface. My feeling is that
this is one thing that caused some support issues with the Duet.

Plus a CD drive and some decent ripping s/w, of course. (Oh, that's a
Vortexbox, isn't it?) But I agree that it would be a sensible offering
from Logitech - a turnkey solution for non-IT literate users. But if
such a device were to be created, it's crucial that SqueezeCenter
continue to be developed and made available to those of us who do want
to configure our own servers. I happen to have a Linux machine running
24/7, so it makes perfect sense to run SqueezeCenter on it too, rather
than have yet another box consuming power.

However, offering such a server appliance may not solve all of the
problems that non-technical users have. The impression I get from these
forums is that many (most?) of the problems are down to networking
issues rather than getting the server up running. As long as the
Squeezebox system runs over whatever standard network the user has, it's
vulnerable to these issues. That said, I'm certainly would not advocate
that Logitech do a Sonos and switch to a closed, proprietary wireless
solution.

You can think whatever you want, but the volume control issue is
exactly why I didn't pull the trigger on buying a Transporter right at
the product's outset. Shortly thereafter, I purchased a (used) Dodson

configured my system with an integrated tube amp instead of a power amp.
At that point, I no longer had a use for a Transporter even if its

I have the Squeezebox Radio in my bathroom. It's not near the wet areas
and I run a fan to keep humidity down. (I hate a steamy bathroom.)

I don't have a battery for it yet, so I just set it on a chair close
to--but outside of--the shower when I take a shower. When I get a
battery pack it will be easier to move it to shelf near the shower so I
don't have to set it on a chair. Obviously I can't control it in the
shower, but I just queue up something I like and don't need to mess with
it for the 15-20 minutes I'm in there.

Re: [slim] Question about kbps .

2009-09-12 Thread funkstar

Higher is better for sound quality, lower is better, as you have
discovered, for buffering.

kbps = kilobits per second.

This is the data rate of the encoded audio being sent to the player.
Talk stations can get away with much lower bitrates than music stations,
as the audio is much less complicated so compresses much better.

An explanation of bitrate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitrate

From the Wiki: In telecommunications, bit rate or data transfer rate is
the average number of bits, characters, or blocks per unit time passing
between equipment in a data transmission system. This is typically
measured in multiples of the units bit per second or byte per second.

So the higher the rate shown should translate to a higher quality audio
stream (of course that does not account for how well it was recorded in
the first place). So in other words if the exact same recording is
streamed at 24 Kbps and 64 Kbps on another channel, I would prefer to
listen to the 64 Kbps.

I could probably stand listening to Talk Radio at 24 Kbps for a little
while. Music audio minimum for me is 128 Kbps which I can take for a
little while. 192 is better and 256 Kbps even better, I can listen for
much longer.

If comparing to MP3s that have a bunch of detail thrown away, one would
consider those to be 96 and 128 Kbps MP3s. 128Kbps is 1/11th the size of
the Redbook file it started out as. Of course this is over simplifying
to make a comparison. Wiki MP3 for a more detailed explanation.

Again, maybe I am missing something or not seeing an advantage for use

Re: [slim] RTSP, why not ?

rtsp can also be used to stream audio, like webradios. And quite a few
radio I like to listen to uses only rtsp or mms.

Yes I know the format streams audio also, but if not in a Live
Conference setting, where is the advantage for audio (of course other
then a station only streams in that format which one could say is a
point)?

Isn't RSTP a bandwidth hog? I need to do some more digging when I have
time. I just have a basic overview of the format.

Re: [slim] RTSP, why not ?

2009-09-12 Thread andyg

RTSP would be useful for some WMA stations that stream using
MMS-over-RTSP. But all it takes for these stations to stream using the
HTTP method we do support is checking a single checkbox in the WM Server
admin tool. So it hasn't been a priority for us to support. RTSP is
also used for RealAudio, but it's not going to be around much longer and
we have no plans to support it.

Note that you can install the AlienBBC plugin with mplayer if you need
to play some of these streams.

Re: [slim] RTSP, why not ?

2009-09-12 Thread pablolie

RTSP is just the control protocol. It basically sets up the session
and control thereof (setup, teardown, pause ..). Many very popular apps
support it, not sure if elements of the SC solution do or don't.

The actual data is then transported with RTP (real time protocol) which
carries tiemstamps and sequence numbers and what not. RTP typically
works with RTCP for monitoring things like quality of service etc of the
session.

Not sure what parts of these protocols are or aren't implemented in SC,
but then again their whole point is to provide interoperability among
vendors in a very public environment - a consideration that isn't quite
important in my home.

Re: [slim] RTSP, why not ?

2009-09-12 Thread bpa

The RealAudio RTSP is different to the standard RTSP as it was used as a
basis for the standard RTSP but is not compliant with RTSP.

This mean when you build mplayer you sometimes have to choose which
flavour of RTSP you want to include.

Re: [slim] Internet radio URL's

2009-09-12 Thread Fahzz

Are the URL's available somewhere within SqueezeNetwork or elsewhere in
a form that can be copied? I've tried to find this, but can only see
them on the controller, and in SqueezeNetwork, and in both places they
are not able to be copied and pasted.
Thanks.

Did you try getting the URLs by opening the streams using a music player
(Winamp, etc)? Or a browser?

With a Squeezebox if you push the Right Arrow on the controller after
you get a station you like then push the Down Arrow once or twice you
will see the URL.

Re: [slim] Bathroom compatible squeezebox

2009-09-12 Thread Andy8421

Depending on the construction, the things that normally suffers in high
humidity areas are the speaker cones. I have installed ceiling speaker
with polyprop waterproof cones and a duet / amp system in the loftspace
to keep everything away from the water. The charger for the controller
is in the bedroom, again away from the water.

Although I have been negative about the stability of the controller, I
cant say the same about its ability to swim. My wife has dropped it in
the bath twice now, and given a day to dry out it still works OK.

There are very specific regulations in Europe (and probably the US)
about which electrical devices can taken or installed into a bathroom
from a safety perspective. As a general rule, unless the device has
been specifically designed for bathroom use, then dont do it. Damp hands
and damp feet provide a very good path for fault current. Even if you
keep the mains adaptor out of the damp area (eg wallmounting a touch in
the bathroom with a remote psu), you are still relying on whatever
insulation exists in the mains adaptor to keep you from wearing wings
and playing a harp. Battery operation is by far the safest.
