Re: [slim] New Mac Mini

2009-10-27 Thread bigbossman

My G4 runs Leopard extremely well considering it vintage and the
plethora of applications I have running, but support for the PowerPC
platform is starting to wane so it's upgrade time.
I've decided on the 2.66ghz/320gb bundle, and I'll replace my 320gb IDE
M9 Minipod drive with a 1.5tb version for Time Machine duties. That'll
go nicely with my nice Iomega 1TB, which is simply brimming with
delicious lossless and WAV files (+ the odd movie and picture).

Re: [slim] idea for next product: a Squeeze-pod!

2009-10-27 Thread guybrush

Indeed the controller can be used as a "pocket player", but that is if
you have pretty large pockets... I was thinking about something much
smaller and lightweight. Besides, as some of you have pointed out, the
playback ability on the controller are Beta, and I have experienced
several crashes of the controller while using this functionality. But it
is true that with some ameliorations to the playback ability of the
controller, and with the addition of a transfer of music to the flash
card, the controller could be transformed to a (bulky) portable player.

I have to grin to the proposition of using the iphone (or apple ipod)
as a player... Maybe when Apple adds the possibility to play open source
formats and to not put in my hands an excellent hardware whose
capabilities are limited by a uncustomizable software (I own an iphone,
and I am not impressed). Thumbs up to slimdevices (and now logitech) for
their open product line that really put the user in control...

The device you specified has existed in various forms already.

Consider the following as adjuncts to an SB based system.

Stream via http://slimserverIP:9000/stream.mp3

As mentioned above - controller + iPhone/Touch

Play (supported) media locally , or stream over wi-fi. iPhone has has
streaming over 3G if your server is connected to the internet

1) Wi-fi + removable flash memory cards: Nokia internet tablets
(770, N800, N810, N900)
play (supported) media locally , or stream over wi-fi.

2) Sansa Clip plus. Has removeable flash card. Plays flac out of the
box.
Has FM receiver. Play output of SB on an FM transmitter, and away you
go :)

On Linux systems the pre-installed database server is being used. The changes
discussed would need to be applied to the main mysql instance. Configuration
will influence other apps using it too. Be sure what you're doing.

Configuration files most likely are in /etc/my.cnf or similar.

Well, I changed the files according instructions on my Sheevaplug
running Debian. It has 'only' 512mb memory and not the suggested at
least 1GB.

Speed increase is incredible on 16000 files with artwork files in each
album folder. First it took around 1 hour 30 minutes, now only 1 hour
and 2 minutes.

That's a beautiful question! I can see why it would be important to
have Facebook integration (market share increase, get some people to
move from the relatively boring Sonos system for example), but I do
agree it is absolutely unacceptable to do that before we have basic
functionality working!

So how do you guys get around this? I currently use MediaMonkey to
generate and export lists to Squeezebox and the other way around, but
this is a VERY dumb solution!

Many thanks. I downloaded and installed SqueezePlay 7.4-r0, and it's
excellent. However, in the interim, Squeezecentre 7.4 proved so leaden
and unstable on my Squeezebox that I reverted to 7.3.4 - which
SqueezePlay 7.4-r0 doesn't support, of course!
Still I can listen to Last.fm on this version of SqueezePlay, and it

[slim] Crown CE2000 to drive multiple speakers?

2009-10-27 Thread Scardeville

I'm doing a new audio setup in my new old house and have installed
speakers in six rooms that I'll be controlling through a Niles SLC-6.
I'd also like to control the power on the amp through
PowerControlCenter. So I'm looking for an low-priced solution to an
amplifier that can drive up to six pairs of 8 ohm speakers through the
Niles. Looking around on local sites I found a Crown CE2000 for just
$250. At 440 Watts per channel and with a hard toggle power switch
rather than a momentary it seems to be a good solution for my needs but
this is actually a pro audio rack-mount amp so I'm wondering if it's
overkill. Does anyone have experience with this unit or does anyone have
other recommendations for a reliable amp big enough to drive a whole
house-full of speakers for not too much money?

2009-10-27 Thread MrSinatra

thats what we're trying to figure out... the default my.tt is set to
work with even the most low power hardware, (think NAS, etc) so moonbase
setup a tweaked file to unchoke the DB, but his values for it are really
just guesses. the danger is the tweaks could outpower someones
hardware, but we don't yet have a handle on what thresholds are where.

ultimately, the best solution is for hardware tests to be run during
SBS install so the values are dynamically set (as well as library size
and artwork calculations), but unless there is a pgm out there that
already "knows" how to do that well (to optimize sql for differing
hardware), we have to give AndyG datapoints to set different my.tt's
based on what installer finds.

I saw some mention of SQLite so I wanted to clear up some confusion.
SQLite has no tunable parameters like this. It is faster during
scanning (no IPC traffic to MySQL) but not as fast during complex browse
queries where MySQL is more advanced.

The current plan is to include full support for both MySQL and SQLite,
with MySQL the default on non-embedded platforms. There will be a pref
to switch database backends if you want.

That makes me wonder. The Squeezecenter is sorting the artists
according to the ARTISTSORT tag. So, although the artist is displayed as
written in the ARTIST tag ("Tori Amos"), the artist appears under "A",
because the ARTISTSORT tag is "Amos, Tori".

Doe you mean with ARTISTSORT tag that this is an actual tag for e.g.
mp3 files? Personally i use tag&rename but can't find the ARTISTSORT
field.
Apart from that it should be easy to implement what you ask as it would
just be a sorting option in the query ACC performs.

That's good news. I am still figuring out how to migrate my iTunes smart
playlists to MySQL playlists, and was a bit worried that these might not
be compatible with the next major release.

I think it's not official, but Squeezecenter uses it. I added it
manually to my tagging programs (foobar2000, mp3tag).

Tag&Rename - will NOT show you "ArtistSort".

mp3tag - will show it if you tell it to

dBpoweramp - will show it

Re: [slim] After 7.4.1 upgrade and complete rescan, some songs appear double.

2009-10-27 Thread jimzak

I'm seeing similar previously reported behavior under New Music after a
rescan with 7.4.0 (and the behavior persists with 7.4.1)

The album is listed several times under New Music with 1-3 songs under
each entry.

It's always the most recent CD added to the database only.

A complete rescan corrects it.

[slim] inssider and netstumbler

2009-10-27 Thread fredpb

Netstumbler will not work on my machines.

I have been trying to use #inssider, but that does not work either:
gives "service has not been started" error when I try to start
scanning?

Help?

Re: [slim] Any Windows 7 issues yet

2009-10-27 Thread Bryan Jan

Clean installation of W7 and 7.4.1 on the same machine (different
harddisk)

so far I don't find any problem. performance-wise the initial scanning
is much faster than before.

Your joking, right? Its a Microsoft product, need I say anymore?!

As for are there any known issues with Squeezebox software running on
Windows 7 which I believe is your real question? Not at the moment.

[slim] can't see playlist contents in 7.4.X

2009-10-27 Thread curry100

Hi,

Since moving to 7.4.0 on Centos5, it seems .m3u playlists I have which
are basically lists of streaming radio stations don't provide the name
of the station.

If I click on a stream then it then updates the playlist name (I assume
collecting from the tags in the stream), but not after a reset. If I
modify 1 name entry in the playlist via squeezeboxserver and save, then
all the other extensions are deleted (luckily I had a backup), but the
entry I added is visible. The original entries in the file look
identical to before, no hidden characters.

Here's a sample if the .m3u file, is there anything I need to change?
It used to work perfectly fine before. I've also changed the owner and
group to squeezeboxserver in case that was a problem, and upgraded to
7.4.1
