Re: [slim] Powered bookshelf speaker for bookshelf ?
If you can, consider the 'NHT M-00 powered monitors' (http://store.nhthifi.com/M-00-Powered-Mini-monitor?sc=12&category=1213). These are an acoustic-suspension design, so no worries placing on a bookshelf. You will probably require an attenuator, and NHT makes 'the PVC PC' (http://store.nhthifi.com/NHT-PVC-PC;jsessionid=0a0109441f436905e28e75754ea3bd6f93bdadfddfe7.e3eTaxmKbNaNe34Pa38Ta38Qc350?sc=12&category=1213) which works great with the Squeezebox (and breaks ground-loops too). If you want more bass and thus also add a subwoofer, you will have a very nice sounding full-range system. -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70600 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Online radio stations strike big deal on royalties
Many fees for use of copyrighted material, especially music, have been too high for too long. Historically, owners of copyrighted material could charge high fees because the distribution was tightly controlled. This is called exclusivity. The revenue potential is so high that the history of the music industry is rife with stories of theft and squander. It's understandable that many owners complain that they loose money in a new world of free information and open networks of sharing. I for one, do not have compassion for those who lament disappearance of the old ways of commanding control of distribution. It's time for new business models that embrace the openness of the net. Here's an example: www.cdbaby.com. You'll notice that the musicians set prices and label fees are set up front, and the musician retains ownership. -- mark-e-mark mark-e-mark's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4726 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65373 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] 7.4.(x) random mix excluding Genres doesn't work
Hi, Thanks for the reply, I only have 1 genre tag per track, on 7.4.x it really is just a matter of time before a christmas track would pop up in the playlist based on the volume of tracks in there (missus has *lots* of christmas stuff). I'd tried restarting squeezeboxserver in case there was a problem there, but the problem didn't clear. I didn't come across this before upgrading and since reverting I've had random mix running for hours without a Christmas track turning up. It could be just the randomness of it, but probability of a Christmas track turning up based on the number of hours I've had random play running is high without the genre being excluded. Not sure if its down to the build or setup I'm running but I'm using the Linux version on a Centos5 server. [slim] Powered bookshelf speaker for bookshelf ?
Hi, I'm looking forward to buy a SqueezeBox. I don't want to keep my old hi-fi around, as I want to keep things simple, and it's not that special anyway. So I'm looking in into powered bookshelf speakers. The gotcha is that my current speaker are in a bookshelf cabinet, with books on the side and top, and this is the obvious place to put the new speakers. With kids running around, I can't really consider other options. I searched the forum, and it seems that one of the favorite is the AudioEngine 5. It's in the price range I was considering. The dimension are also similar to my old speakers. What worries me is that the bass-reflex is at the back (my current speaker has it in front). My feeling is that I would be loosing all the bass extension of the bass-reflex, and that may also impact the response of the bass woofer. First question : are my worry about the AudioEngine 5 bass-reflex overblown ? Has anybody tested the AudioEngine 5 against a wall or in a shelf ? Second question : is there alternative speakers in the USA, similar in price/size/feature as the AudioEngine 5 but more compatible with bookshelf use ? Thanks in advance... If you use 'connection sharing' on Windows, every device needs to go through the windows machine, which is counterproductive when routers are cheap enough. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70594 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Mine is in the basement. Connect the router to the switch, your computer to the switch, and your SqueezeBoxes to the switch. When you buy more computers or more SqueezeBoxes, you may need to get a 8 port switch. Or more. I'm up to 24 ports. With this setup, you can just add stuff by plugging it into the switch. You can even add a WiFi Access Point. I perfer not using the cable company's router/modem as my only firewall and wifi setup. Someone mentioned not 'making' your own ethernet cables... You don't want to make your own _patch_ cables. These are the short, flexible cables that you use to attach equipment to switches, hubs, and to wall jacks. It's difficult to do well, and the store-bought variety are cheap and available in any length you like. Google running ethernet cabling, though. There's a lot of online info, and you'll find that you can easily do it yourself. Use solid core cable and punch the ends into wall jacks and/or patch panels at either end. Don't use patch cable (flexible, stranded core) in walls unless you leave the original RJ-45 plugs on either end, which generally makes for a sloppy install. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70586 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The stream breaks up due to errors and retransmissions to fix them. The problem is that streaming media demands delivery or you can hear the dropouts. Same with HD Video, only far more bandwidth is needed, so you can get it more often. If the packets are delivered on time, there is no sounds quality difference between Cat5/5e/6 and WiFi. Re: [slim] Ethernet Cables: How well do they work?
The sound quality of ethernet is no better than wireless. They both use TCP/IP which has error correction protocols to make sure that the bits sent are the bits received, and in proper order. However, ethernet is generally more reliable than wifi, and much less susceptible to interference. Your phones can interfere with wifi, but they can't interfere with ethernet. Same for your neighbor's new router, your microwave oven, etc. You'll only get interference with ethernet if you run it next to electrical wires for long distances (several feet). Some ethernet cables are made better than others, eg, better connectors, better jackets, etc. But the differences are nothing at all like the differences in quality -- and especially price -- that exist with audio cables. Any ethernet cable from a reputable supplier is the same as the next. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70586 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Yup, and any place you take your player to (assuming internet access) all of your Favorite stations and all of your Music Services are right there. MySB basically follows your players, no local server needed. -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70558 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Napster - Can't see Napster Playlists !
This is the thing, thats stopping me signing up after the trial, its the same with removing albums etc as well, it takes a while, its very annoying on ipeng scrolling in and out waiting fo them to disappear, I understand there would be a bit of a delay due to being wirless and all, but had one the other day, it took about 2 mins for one to disappear. [slim] Some Radiostations are not playing when connected to fresh installed server
Hi guys hope you can help me with my following problem: Yesterday I installed a new (7.4.1) SB-Server and some radiostations stopped playing. The strange thing is: if I connect to my 'old' 7.4.1 SB-Server everythings works like a charm. So something in the new server-install seems to prevent the playing of some radio-stations. Server 'old': Debian Lenny on Linkstation LS-CHL, 7.4.1 Debian-Image installed Server 'new': Ubuntu on SheevaPlug, 7.4.1 Debian-Image installed. I'm currently streaming to the receiver, I switch servers with the Controller with 'Choose Library' under 'My Music'. Some other notable things: - when connected to the new server the menu under 'internet radio' shows 'RADIO_TIME_LOCAL' instead of 'Lokal' like on the old server. - when connected to the new server, the streaminfos show 'M3U', when connected to the old server we have 'Windows Media' The serverlog shows the following error Code: [09-10-29 10:21:38.1320] Slim::Networking::IO::Select::__ANON__ (146) Error: Select task failed calling Slim::Networking::Async::HTTP::_http_read_body: Error in tempfile() using ./XX: Parent directory (./) is not writable at /usr/share/perl5/Slim/Utils/Scanner/Remote.pm line 662 ; fh=Slim::Networking::Async::Socket::HTTP=GLOB(0x367bb58) Don't know if that is related ? -- bluegaspode 1x SB-Controller+Receiver (Duet), 1xSB-Boom. 1xSB-Radio Server (7.4.1) running on Linkstation NAS (LS-CHL) (with Debian Lenny instead of Stock-Firmware) bluegaspode's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31651 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70569 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] 7.4.(x) random mix excluding Genres doesn't work
Maybe you just haven't tested it long enough. I've been using 7.4 for a long time and Random Mix works fine for me and plays only the selected genres. One thing you have to know is that the unchecked genres are not excluded by the Random Mix. The checked genres are included, but there's no exclusion implied. This comes into play when you have tracks that are tagged with and belong to more than one genre. Is any of your Christmas stuff tagged with more than one genre? If you have a track tagged, say, Christmas;Rock, and you play only 'Rock' in Random Mix, then it _will_ play this track. It's always been like this. I'm not sure if there's an enhancement request on file to have it explicitly exclude the unchecked genres. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70566 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Reverted back to 7.3.3 and the problem clears. The file content has not been changed so can confirm the problem is with 7.4.X release.
