Re: [slim] Brick Potential?

2009-12-08 Thread DaveWr

The server maybe a fully open codebase, but if Logitech fail to
continue, I doubt the open source community could take it forwards.

The development team have changed interfaces repeatedly, documentation
of key interfaces is out of date. The third party developers struggle
to maintain code that works. Two major ones seem to have given up.

The latest moves - Radio Touch seem more akin to what people have
against Mr Jobs style, significant requirement for MySb.com. This the
same as the Harmony remote business, also purchased by Logitech.

As to the longevity, I have no opinion. Obviously Logitech have been
right-sizing the business, their management will be primarily focussed
on returns.

One has to treat the product for what it is. buy today, it is the most
effective product on the market, but don't expect hi-fi component
longevity of the systems. This is the fast moving consumer goods
market, not Sean Dean's great innovation, volumes and profit returns
are the key issues.

I seem to be having trouble with all AIFF files now that I switched to
7.4.1 on Snow Leopard. Issues range from hiss/noise on the last two
seconds of tracks to no music/all noise on other tracks. The server is
set to AIFF native.

There would be little problem with taking the code forwards. The code
works already, there are bugs here and there but overall it works pretty
well.

In any normal development life cycle you'd describe Squeezebox Server
as feature complete.

So it isn't as if anyone maintaining it would have rewrite big chunks
of it, like the SB dev team have been doing recently (to get it to work
well on the Touch).

This of course just applies to the server software and some of the
software on the newer players. We'd be stuck with the firmware as it
currently is on the Boom, Receiver, SB3 etc

Re: [slim] Internet Radio Gone

2009-12-08 Thread Siduhe

Can you access any internet radio stations via Squeezebox Server? If
not, have you tried stopping the Squeezebox server and then restarting
it (alternatively rebooting your server)? What sometimes happens is
that Squeezebox Server starts up before the box running it has an
internet connection available. It is therefore set up to run as if no
internet is available, even though the internet connection has
subsequently become available.

If this doesn't work, what does the server.log file say when you try to
play one of these stations? Could be a DNS issue.

Re: [slim] Logitech should hire Pippin! Those having difficulty w/Controller should get iPeng.

2009-12-08 Thread ajkidle

There are many reasons it might not be a good idea for Logitech to
formally hire Pippin (namely, Pippin may not be interested.) However, I
believe Logitech would be well served by formally sponsoring and
branding the iPeng app. To a new customer, I think it looks sloppy that
the app is (1) not free and (2) not associated with Logitech in any
way.

Full disclaimer, I own iPeng, love it, was worth every penny, etc. I
am not arguing that Pippin should not be compensated for his fantastic
app. Rather I'm trying to look at it from the perspective of someone
not already immersed in the Squeezebox community / mindset. We on this
board understand the power and benefit of the open source approach, but
the masses do not. And for my 2 cents, I think it gives the appearance
(on the surface) of not being a fully integrated, credible, and clean
solution that Logitech is not formally associated with the app.

Again, I mean no criticism of Pippin or iPeng here, rather that
Logitech's strategy on this front could be improved.

It's the same as in very much the same sort of stuff. It wouldn't
matter if I could see the artist on the player but I was hoping that the

How would you treat the developers of the other applications for
controlling Squeezeboxes on the iPhone, Android and various other
platforms. There's no Logitech-branded control application for the
increasingly popular Android phones, but there are at least four free
applications and at least one paid (the stunningly-good Squeeze
Commander) that provide some of the same facilities and sometimes more.
There's also Moose for Windows users - an application I love and use all
the time.

In other words (and this is a serious question), why single out the
developer of one application when I suspect very few of us have tried
all of them, and so aren't in a position to judge between them?

I share the original poster's problems with rebuffering and also believe it to
be a software issue with recent versions of Squeezebox Server. I have been
running the same set up flawlessly for over two years, without ever having any

upgraded Squeezebox Server I am having constant problems with music
rebuffering. Nothing else in my setup has changed at all, only the upgrade of

I've only noticed this problem with music from my local collection (mixture of
FLAC and Ogg Vorbis), and to my recollection the rebuffering has not been an
issue with Internet streams.

2009-12-08 Thread sander

As much as I admire Pippin and the good work he's done, after using
iPeng on a first generation itouch, I think the controller has a much
cleaner UI and more responsive. I know the controller's had its
problems, but so does ipeng or any other aspect of SqueezeX.

Maybe its different on a newer device, but the ipeng UI can be slow,
and I haven't warmed up to its UI conventions as much as everyone else.

That said I'm glad I bought it as I do use it more a home and, in
conjunction with vpn from my router, I can stream remotely to my ipod,
which is very nice. Also ipeng is the only UI, I know of, that shows you
an active view of all your devices/streams in one area.

Lastly, I don't think one developer can make the difference at this
point. Hiring Pippin won't make up the fact that the controller hardware
was under spec'ed and Squeezeplay is still a work in progress. The
problems people are having are more systemic.

You can then add a favorite with New Favorite. Type a useful name

Unlike the hardware players SOftsqueeze and Squeezeslave do not have WMA
support. On Windows WMA transcoding support is standard and so software
players can play WMA streams. On Linux and OSX you need additional app
but this is not available on most ReadyNAS models.

I would have expected the Unable to play message to be displayed when
using Softsqueeze. Are you really using Softqueeze and not Squeezeplay
?

In summary - you would not have this problem with a hardware player.

Re: [slim] Radio URL

2009-12-08 Thread Tobias Rittel
Well, you´re right. I´m sorry but my last tests were with Squeezeslave,
and there for sure I don´t see anything on the player. Using
Softsqueeze, it says file type cannot be played (or something like
this, I translated).

Because I´m running my Squeezeserver on a CentOS Linux machine I should
be able to add WMA support? Any suggestions?

Thank you very much for the quick help

Unlike the hardware players SOftsqueeze and Squeezeslave do not have WMA
support. On Windows WMA transcoding support is standard and so software
players can play WMA streams. On Linux and OSX you need additional app
but this is not available on most ReadyNAS models.

I would have expected the Unable to play message to be displayed when
using Softsqueeze. Are you really using Softqueeze and not Squeezeplay
?

In summary - you would not have this problem with a hardware player.

I guess what I really mean to argue is that Logitech needs a formal

evaluate and judge the various apps that currently exist. (Seems silly
to start over given the maturity of iPeng and others.) If there is
something better than iPeng, they should use that.

Re: [slim] AAC+ Internet Radio

I did read that bit about AAC support being standard, but I didn't see
anything about AAC+. I must have missed that. I honestly don't really
understand the difference between the two, but regardless, I am unable
to get any of the groovera.com streams to work.

I am running a 32-bit version of Windows 7 ultimate. I'll try
installing 7.4.1 on a Vista box when I get home tonight to see if it
works.

Are you able to to access the stream that I linked via your setup?

Thanks

[slim] Spotify on Squeezebox now possible?

I'm currently sitting here browsing and listening to Spotify (including

anybody here started work on a SqueezeCenter plugin or is there still
some other barrier in place that I haven't thought of (other than
technical know-how)?

Despotify is a hack around their DRM right? There is no way we could
use that unless we wanted to get sued. Also, we need to implement it in
our player firmware, which isn't x86, so we need a real API from
Spotify. But don't worry, I'm sure the Spotify team will get something

That's interesting; I always thought that the Squeezeboxes were fairly
dumb clients, with most of the work being done on the server. I didn't
realize that something would need implementing in the firmware, so I
guess that's what rules out a third-party from having a go and I guess I
have my answer. A shame.

Incidentally, the Plex plugin seems to be quite buggy still so I guess
it's Spotify on my iPhone with iPhone speakers for now!

As I understand it restricted services, including pay-for services like
Rhapsody, premium Spotify, etc aren't going to be implemented via the
open source server software. They need the closed-source player firmware
and/or closed-source mysb.com to keep the secret handshakes secret.

Right, Spotify uses Vorbis wrapped in DRM. The DRM decryption must be
kept secret and so lives in the firmware. The rest of the service is
implemented within the server and on the backend in MySB.com.

[slim] Suggestion for future software upgrade

2009-12-08 Thread mpmains

I just wanted to make a suggestion for a possible change in a future
upgrade. I'm using my Squeezebox at my bedside. I'm old enough that I
need glasses to see menu selections. A valuable modification would be to
make my Favorites available through a one button push as opposed to
finding it on the menu. If you could make the preset buttons capable of
linking to a menu item it would vastly improve the usability of this
fine product.
Thanks for considering my suggestion.

cheaper which would be nice.

If I run out of time will more than likely go for the Blue Jeans / Mark

[slim] Feature Wish - LastFM/Artwork

2009-12-08 Thread socistep

Hi All,

Slightly pie in the sky this idea, however I was thinking before how it
would be good to hook up my local music collection with lastFM for
artwork, for example if there was no artwork saved for an album then it
would send a request to LastFm and get the artwork from there (or
Napster etc.) - this would be particularly beneficial for compilations
if there was some way of displaying album art for an artist rather then
'101 power ballads' for example.

As mentioned I doubt whether this would ever be viable but I think it
would be a nice feature!

Any thoughts ?

Ian

It only supports the old mms transport protocol and not http. The mms
protocol has been deprecated by Microsoft and even WMP12 will not play

All the station broadcasting has to do is check a box on their software

So...what exactly is wrong with Pippin staying independent and carrying

[slim] rhapsody and the new web-based remote control applet

2009-12-08 Thread mortslim

Several people have complained over the last two months as to the
problems with the new web-based remote control applet at
mysqueezebox.com, ever since it debuted.

Specifically, shoutcast is totally unusable.

And Rhapsody can only play channels, but no albums. Yes, I can use the
hardware remote control with infrared to play albums, but why are there
still bugs in the ability of the software remote control at
mysqueezebox.com for this feature?

I am quite confused as to why Logitech has not:

1. Fixed the issue yet.
2. Even acknowledged (as far as I know) that there is a problem.

I called today to both Logitech and Rhapsody technical support. Both
companies forward the calls to Phillipine call centers where nice people
read from scripts and have no idea what I am talking about.

In the old days, maybe a year ago, there was participation by Logitech
employees on these forums. A year ago, I could call technical support
and talk directly to an empoyee at the slim devices company. Now, there
is no logitech employee feedback and no one to talk to who even knows
about this problem.

I am frustrated that two months since the new web interface has
debuted, I have no idea if:
1. Does Logitech know about this problem?
2. Is Logitech working on this problem?
3. When will this problem be fixed?

No, I didn't report this as a bug on a separate web page where I
would have to do a new registration to log in. I am not going to hassle
with that. Anyways, others have already reported this bug two months
ago.

In the old days, reporting a problem on this forum would be enough to
bring it to Logitech's attention and get it fixed, usually within 24
hours or less.

Bottom line - what's going on?
Two months is long enough for this major problem to continue.

I don't use a local server. I rely totally on internet music, like
Rhapsody. I like to use my computer on occasion to conrol Rhapsody on
my squeezebox. At the moment, it is not possible.

Re: [slim] Think I've been ripped off - Squeezebox Classic Store Demo Unit.. Help!

2009-12-08 Thread Radrismo

Unfortunately all attempts to contact the seller have failed and he has
also sold at least 2 other Squeezeboxes recently so I'm not sure I'm the
only victim.

I'm still dissapointed there is no firmware fix that can turn these
ddemo units into a functional player. There is nothing (apart from the
CF Card replacing the wireless card) obviously different about the
Hardware (I've been comparing lots of the helpful online modding
closeups of the insides) and I know the unit is capable of outputting
audio (it does it in the Demo).

My next step is to try and hack the Demo mode code - think I have
successfully accessed the data on the card, so now will see if I can do
anything else with it.

I think you might not know who Sean is, He started the Squeezebox!

Hack all you want, it is a menu demo unit (not working demo unit) and I
believe it doesn't have the guts to be a player even if one could put
the correct OS and Firmware onto it.

You may not have noticed, but Sean, who replied to your post, is one of
the original founders of SlimDevices (that was subsequently bought by
Logitech). If he says its worthless I suspect it is, but hey maybe you
can get something working :)

Ok the sofsqueeze/sqslave may not support it. I was at my PC when
testing and it worked on hardware player and on SqueezePlay without
problems. Actually enjoyed the stream while working too :)

Re: [slim] Logitech should hire Pippin! Those having difficulty w/Controller should get iPeng.

2009-12-08 Thread Andy8421

I am a huge fan of iPeng and have 3 copies across the various i*
products owned by my family. I am in agreement however that an
officialy supported product gives comfort to users that the product will
continue to be supported going forward.

A case in point would be Inguz, the room correction add in. By all
accounts a fine piece of software that gives squeeze products
significant dsp capability. I have held off implementing this as every
squeeze software update seems to break Inguz, and it is only because of
the dedication of the original author that the software is brought back
to life.

What if Pippin were to win the lottery tomorrow and spend his declining
years on a beach somewhere? The next squeeze software update would
probably break iPeng (see the developers forum for discussion of
squeeze's lack of a stable framework to hang add-ins on), and who would
bring iPeng back to life?

No criticism of Pippin, he has done a fine job, but I would feel more
comfortable if it were a Squeeze supported product.

Re: [slim] Feature Wish - LastFM/Artwork

2009-12-08 Thread lrossouw

Album artwork in Last.fm is basically Amazon artwork. There are tools
that help automate the process of assigning Amazon artwork to files.

Photos of artists on last.fm is what you're after I think? Erland's
custom scan plugin can be setup to download pictures for artists in your
collection from last.fm

If you use his custom browse plugin as well these should be displayed
on the web interface when browsing to the artist. Don't think they are
displayed anywhere else, but it may be possible to change the interface
to show the artist picture on compilations or where no album art is
available for example... But I don't have skills to do that. So part of
what you need is already done.

I think there is a bug in SBS where if the URL in an ASX playlist is not
WMA - it causes the unable to play message. I've seen it with MP3 and
now it seems AAC+ as well.

lrossouw,

what OS is your SBS on ?
What OS was Squeezplay running if not the same PC ?

If it is Windows - it inludes WMA transcoding by default unlike Linux
and OSX.

I realise who Sean is. I am also a complete cynic that believes that
even if its just firmware there is no way Sean is going to tell me, as
its obvious from a business point of view these should not be in public
hands and releasing this information would open up a potential back
door.

I'm terms of of your doesn't have the guts I've ted in my previous
posts that it looks to me (a) the unit is visually identical inside
(except for the CF Card in the place of the WiFi) to a production unit
(based on comparisons with lots of highres online guides from all the
audio modders. (b) The rolling demo actually includes lots of audio -
its not just a rolling text demo so there is functional audio hardware
in this (c) I can actually get it to connect to my Squeeze Server etc.
and browse tracks etc. (d) This is a also a Logitech branded demo unit
not a Slim devices (if that makes any difference in terms of demo
hardware versions)

Hacking the CF Card is obviously a dead end (it looks to just contain
the demo) but it would be at least be fun to get it to scroll something
else.

I also realise I'm now probably posting in the wrong section - the
hardware mod section seems to have people more willing to seriously hack
the hardware and swap bits out (upgraded wifi cards etc.)
