Re: [slim] Why is AAC the default

2010-01-14 Thread bpa

This was reported in bug 15271 as in SBS systems which cannot transcode
such as ReadyNAS this behaviour resulted in non playable stream due to
another bug 13955 ( https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=13955
).

The change fixing bug 15271 ( https://bugs.slimdevices.com
/show_bug.cgi?id=15271 ) is supposed to make SBS only ask for AAC when
the player can play AAC natively.

Are you up to date ?

Not that impressed, another programmable IR remote. I think a Harmony

an RF link. They will be as good as their programming library..

Compared with the interactive remote facilities of iPeng, absolutely no
competition in my opinion.

I could only suggest testing the TV's digital outs into a known good
digital input (most likely on your AVR/receiver). May just be a setting
to pass the audio to digital outs.

FYI: Something to be aware of, many HDTV's limit digital audio outs to
only 2 ch, particularly with HDMI input.

Re: [slim] Connecting TV to transporter's digital inputs help?

2010-01-14 Thread peachmelba

The Transporter only accepts 2 channel PCM, not the 5.1 Dolby that TVs
and DVD players typically output by default. If you send it Dolby, all
you'll hear is a faint hiss and crackle. Some TVs (my Samsung, for
example) don't have an option to convert to linear PCM, but every DVD
player I've ever had does.

Set the DVD player to use PCM, as distinct from bitstream or
Dolby/DTS, and also set it to downmix to stereo. Generally this is
not the default. Some even have the digital out disabled by default.

I use my Transporter's digital inputs with a DVD player and PVR so it
does work. It used to sometimes not, due to a firmware bug; you'd have
to cycle into standby to get it going sometimes. This was fixed last
year sometime, but my reading of the server release notes (the
Transporter firmware version, moronically, is linked to the server
version) is that the bug reappeared and has been squashed again. I'd try
updating the firmware before assuming there's any kind of hardware fault
- it looks like a very well built piece of equipment to me.

I bought my Transporter retail here in Australia, so Logitech must have
some kind of servicing arrangements.

Re: [slim] Napster Bit Rate

2010-01-14 Thread andyg

There's a lot of different formats Napster uses.

WMA DRM (to-go subscription). These are 192k I believe.
DRM-free MP3 purchases (128k or 256k depending on the album)
WMA streaming (128k)

We only use the 128k WMA streaming format and as far as I can see they
are all at 128k. The following chart shows the formats Napster provides
for streaming:

Code:

  Codec Container Bitrates Protocol
Windows Media Audio v9 (WMA) WMA 20, 32, 128 Kbps MMS
  MP3 FLV 32, 128 Kbps RTSP / RTMP

Re: [slim] Napster Bit Rate

This is where I'm confused by Napster as their customer support told me
just yesterday...
At this time, the majority of tracks that are streamed from the Napster
service are offered at a bit rate of 192Kbps. Tracks that are not
available at 192Kbps are streamed at 128Kbps. We are working on
upgrading all of our tracks to a higher bit rate, but unfortunately
there is no estimated time table for every track offered in the Napster
 service.

Andy, your comment that the 128kbps track-info on my SBC is
hard-written means it cannot be used to check the streaming rate. Is it
possible that the higher rate is available but just not requested by
Sbox?

I've asked them to please specify a track that they know to be streamed
at 192kbps so that I can check it. So far no response.

Anyone know how I can check the actual stream rate when using the
Napster web interface or software?

Don't know what to say about Live365. If you want help troubleshooting

what plugins are installed, whether you have the same problems with

Frank,

thanks for a great utility, upgarded this morning from 1.5ish which I
hadn't got fully working and successfully emailed the QuickRef to my
phone.

Few hours later, that prevented me buying a copy of an album I already
had, so I'm donating you the cost of that album.

Interestingly, in past posts you didn't intend to support
AlbumArtistSort, since it is an 'unofficial' tag, but is supported by
SBS.
This seems to work at the moment for me:-

Album = West Side Stoy
Compilation = 1
AlbumArtist = Leonard Bernstein
AlbumArtistSort =  OST

sorts as OST in the midst of all my other soundtracks where
AlbumArtist = Various - OST and AlbumArtistSort - OST. I
suspect that this is because SBS has translated AlbumArtistSort into an
internal field that you are using.

Anyway, happy it works.

Re: [slim] Network configuration question

2010-01-14 Thread cburke

 So, a few questions:
 - Does having 2x NICS on a single device each assigned unique IPs in
the same subnet create an issue and can it be overcome? I'd like to
overcome it because making one of my PCs the gateway forces meto have it
on anytime another device needs access.
 - If I'm forced to use Internet connection sharing with one PC on the
network connected to the router, how do I best configure this?

 Thx

Question 1: Yes it causes issues - primarily because the PC doesn't
know which interface to use when sending packets out because both
interfaces are within the same IP subnet. Different IP stacks handle
this differently and there is no standard. (Some sent it our the first
one, some load-balance it, some refuse to let you assign a second
interface in the same subnet...etc). It's generally considered an
invalid configuration. This is likely why your initial attempt didn't
work out.

Your best bet is put everything on one flat network (e.g. plug
everything into 192.168.168 and stop using the 2nd interfaces on the PCs
all together). Then use your DSL router as your default gateway. There
is really no need to be using two NICs (if you're doing it for bandwidth
reasons). Even the highest quality audio streams are minuscule compared
to a gigabit of bandwidth. For example a 256kbps stream would only use
about .03% of a gigabit of bandwidth (that's .03% not 3%!).

Re: [slim] Would truly love an Audible.com app to be available on Squeezebox

2010-01-14 Thread cburke

I am generally anti-DRM. That said, I'm also a 9 year audible subscriber
and an avid audio book listener (both from Audible and my local library)
and I think there are two sides to the story.

First I want to point out that audio books are not quite the same as
music. This is because the primary format of a book is, well, a book.
The audio version is a secondary format and one which brings in
additional revenue to be sure, but isn't the main focus of the
publisher. Audio versions of books are optional, audio versions of music
are required :-)

After years of hating DRM, it was my library which finally made me see
the other side of the argument (not that I prefer DRM'd content even
now).

They have an online system via MediaMall which allows you to
check-out audio books from their library (for free with your library
card number). They are typically in DRM'd WMA format and only play for 4
weeks. I initially thought this was crazy and weird - but when I spoke
with someone at the library about this they explained that this system
allows them to buy a number of virtual copies of an audio book and the
enforce a virtual checkout and return process. Overall, this led to
the audio book publishers being able to sell virtual copies of their
audiobooks without worying about losing revenue (because they act just
like the CD sets they sell). By the end of the first year, the audiobook
selection was easily 50 times the size it was before this. So this is a
case where I am emphatically pro-DRM because I know for sure this
content would not be available free from my library without it.

Since audio versions of books are not compulsory, I don't think the all
same (music/movie) DRM arguments apply (at least in the same way).

thanks for a great utility, upgarded this morning from 1.5ish which I
hadn't got fully working and successfully emailed the QuickRef to my

 Album = West Side Stoy
 Compilation = 1
 AlbumArtist = Leonard Bernstein
 AlbumArtistSort =  OST

sorts as OST in the midst of all my other soundtracks where
AlbumArtist = Various - OST and AlbumArtistSort - OST. I
suspect that this is because SBS has translated AlbumArtistSort into an
internal field that you are using.

 Anyway, happy it works.

 Mitch

Hi Mitch,

Thank you very much for your donation! Really appreciate it.

ACC v2.1 - although not intended to be supported at first - does
support the ArtistSort feature (lets say that it took some time for me
to see the light ;-). In the advanced option screen you can turn this
option on or off.

On the other hand you (as a publisher) could just calculate each copy of
an audio book just like a rented one. I also own hundreds if audio books
and I can safely say that I rarely listen to one more than once.
And it's not as if the data on my harddisc does impose any
manufacturing costs on them as it is for a real book.

[slim] Logitech brain-dead-edness

2010-01-14 Thread byKnight

So I wanted to pick up an extra remote. I've bought squeezeboxes and
accessories online before from the company web site.

But I couldn't find accessories for sale on the Squeezebox web site any
more. Then I see the sticky post above that, since December, accessories
are not available at the web site any more with an expression that they
hope to have them available soon.

Another disconnect with the Joe Customer.

I've got a minor problem when running ACC (v2.1). The output is allways

starting capitals on or off. I can fix it afterwards with a text editor
but like to see the starting capitals. Does anybody know how to fix it?
Thanks in advance. By the way: Great appliction!

be solved. I'll put it on my bugfix list. Thx for the report!

Re: [slim] Would truly love an Audible.com app to be available on Squeezebox

2010-01-14 Thread toby10

I have no problem with DRM if I am *knowingly* renting it, as in your
library scenerio (a great idea BTW).
Just like my Napster account, I have no problem with DRM when I am
*knowingly* renting their content via streaming from their server.
But if I *buy* it, then I want to own it and have unencumbered access
to that purchase on any platform I wish to use it.

I'm all for copywright protection when implemented in a sane and common
sense way. Like when I buy or rent a DVD, I can play that DVD on any
DVD player on the planet (NTSC vs PAL formats aside). But DRM is not
universally standardized which limits which MP3 player I can use.

If the DVD standard were like DRM: You rent/buy a Warner Bros movie,
pop your popcorn and dim the lights, insert your DVD into your Sony DVD
player, and you get a message on your TV sorry, your Sony DVD player
can only play movies from Sony Studios. So if there are 12 studios we
need to buy 12 different DVD players? That's insane! That's DRM! ;)

I appreciate the passion you both have for the Squeezes! I, too, feel
exactly the same way...I have never listened to so much beautiful music
with such continuous awesome fidelity. I am so impressed with these
players. I also have some great radio stations in my favorites
collection and stations that will broadcast athletic events that
otherwise would be unavailable in my town. I enjoy the variety of music
sent to me via last.fm.comIt is interesting to hear what is
recommended to me after much scrobbling. If I like the music I can
simply save the album/track to Rhapsody. These are the only 2
subscriptions I have. I also use Pandora. So, I really love the Squeezes
and I recommend them to all my friends. Most of them don't seem to get
my excitement. Good to see that you, Havoc and Letten, feel the same. I
would like to see this POSITIVE thread go on and on and hear others
POSITIVE opinions!

Re: [slim] SB3 Your Player Was Not Found

2010-01-14 Thread kphinney

I'd recommend running the server on the PC along with the files -- you
can still access all of the functions (and the same web interface) from
the laptop by going to the PC's ip address followed by :9000 (i.e.
192.168.1.100:9000).

Actually, just about any web enabled device can access the server this
way (iPhone, some cells, netbooks, other PCs in the house, etc.)

This cuts down on the networking issues associated with internal
dynamic addresses, and perhaps any latency issues. While I'm not sure
if that will alleviate any of your current issues, it will certainly
make lower the potential for issues. Likewise, you'll only need one PC
operative to access your music.

Back to your current issue:
When I asked if you could access the SServer via the web interface it'd
be helpful if you could attempt to access it via another computer in the
house. This will show us if the IP address is okay or if any type of
firewall has accidentally blocked comms.

other critical items shortly like Radio alarms)? It may also take care
of this bug, but I'm not sure it's been backported.

We only run the release on VortexBox because we are worried about bugs
in the nightly builds. Remember 1000s of users use VortexBox and many of
them are non technical. If there is a bug it might not be easy for them
to work around it.

The problem with AAC is resolved in 7.5 and will not be back ported as
far as I can tell. We are starting to use our own build of SBS for
VortexBox. It will be based in 7.4.1 but have a few patches such as this
one.

far as I can tell. We are starting to use our own build of SBS for
VortexBox. It will be based in 7.4.1 but have a few patches such as this
 one.

I'd use 7.4.2 for this.
7.4.2 is a pure bugfix collection and contains no new functionality.
It's much more stable than 7.4.1.
It's not a beta nightly build like the 7.5.0 ones which are under
active development.

Re: [slim] L5 remote for iPod/iPhone

I've already invested hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars in
universal remotes over the years (Prontos, Harmony, etc.) so I will
certainly invest another 50 bucks to check this one out as I already
have the iPod Touch. It is certainly not a mature product now but one
that has potential.

[slim] Best audio format for streaming wifi

2010-01-14 Thread H Rusak

I am about to rip my entire cd collection (1000+) and am wondering which
format to use. I was planning on using iTunes to rip cds and then
stream over wifi to squeezebox touch (when released). I am thinking it
best to use WAV (as opposed to Apple Lossless), but are there issues
with streaming WAV size files (given that Squeezebox is limited to G).
Is there a better solution?

FLAC has clear advantages as a solution:
1. Decent compression level to help streaming bandwidth
2. Compression is LOSLESS
3. Native support in SB players
4. Supports full range of tags (unlike WAV)
5. Free and not tied to proprietary company

Disadvantage for your plan is the iTunes does not rip to FLAC. However
several other well designed and supported prograns do such as EAC and
DbPoweramp.

Many, many people here on the forum use FLAC so support for any
quesitons is plentiful.

Re: [slim] Logitech brain-dead-edness

2010-01-14 Thread Mnyb

I wonder if I'm really should post this...

Transporter is still a current product you can order it, but not the
remote as spare ?

What if you broken or misplaced your remote and needs to factory or
xilink reset the machine = brick ?

Same applies to a recently sold SB Classic ,but you would not lose the
same ammount of $$$ .

I think this tread is almost done now , it's sufficiently rubbed in now
that the spare part sales does not work.

And the OP got 50% answer, he got a link to the spare site .

Remains for Logitech to explain why you cant get a remote on that site
?

Maybe an email directly to sales, they probably can work something out
anyway , despite the efforts by the rest of logitech. There is some very
nice people in that organization.

Matt Parry helped me once, when the cradles for controller was not
available in Europe (they are now took almost a year to get there).
I think he has fixed boom mounting brackets for non us people to ?
Another item thats is completely mia for the moment.

mpa...@slimdevices.com hopefully he don't mind me posting the adress.

itunes BLOWS.

FLAC is good but afaik it only reduces filesize to ~60% of original wav
size.

if you need better, i use 256kbps mp3 which is about 7 to 1 compression
ratio.

My server (version 7.4) is connected to iTunes, on Mac Snow Leopard.

afaik you can't, sort of... its a ridiculous limitation of SBS
software.

if SBS scans in an AA tag, it'll sort by that, period. no dynamic
ability to sort, browse, etc, differently on the fly.

now, if you use TPE2 for AA tags, you can tell it to treat TPE2 as a
band tag, not an AA tag. this will require a full clear and rescan and
mean you need to turn off itunes integration if you use that. p.i.t.a.

want to browse by AA again? same thing in reverse. p.i.t.a.

Question: Is third party plugins/applets important for your Squeezebox

- I won't buy any more Squeezebox products unless support for third
  party development is prioritized
- I won't buy any more Squeezebox products unless the third party
plugins I rely on is supported
- I use third party plugins but I would still consider buying more
  Squeezebox products without them
- I don't use third party plugins so they aren't important to my
