Re: [slim] SB3 Your Player Was Not Found

2010-01-18 Thread Actuary

well, it worked. (I would've tried it sooner but why in the world
would that make a difference, it's always worked fine like this :) )

I put SServer on the desktop with the music. At first it said Can't
Find Player but once I went to the player and stepped thru the process
of connecting it (again) to the network, they found each other.
And thanks for the tip about :9000, I did not know how simple that
was.

So, I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth; but this sorta
thing always happens to me with regards to technology.
1. I can't get it to work
2. I do a bunch of stuff
3. It works
4. I have no idea why it didn't work before.
5. I move on.

lol.

well, thanks again!

Yes, I did that and it works ... sort of. Just connect the SPDIF coax
output to the video input on the transmitter, and vice versa on the
receiver. The problem was that the audio dropped out whenever I walked
through the room and crossed the transmission path. That's why I finally
ditched the video transmitter and bought a wireless squeezebox.

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2010-01-18 Thread sbirsen

Hello

I have been using slimcontrol 1.00 for over a week now on a HD2, and I
think it is truely brilliant. My previous HD was a bit slow (maybe the
cache was on the SD card, I can't remember), but now the fact that I can
browse my music library makes it a brilliant tool.

I just have one question which I couldnt find anywhere in the manual
and on forums - apologies if this was brought up and discussed before.

When browsing with my HD2, for some folders the tracks subfolders are
only displayed partially, for example only until the letter E. The rest
is not visible. Is there a track limit per folder that slimcontrol can
handle ?

I tried deleting the slimcontrol cache and restarting the software. I
also deleted the music library on the squeezebox server and let it
rescan the whole library without success, to ensure that the contents of
the affected folders are visible via squeezebox server.

Cheers

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2010-01-18 Thread Locuth

Hi there

There is no upper limit on the number of folders/tracks.
Deleting the cache would have been my first guess too.

If the folder list is (reproduciably) truncated at the same folder or
track I'd say it's caused by some error at that track/folder.

How large is the truncated folder actually?
Is the root directory truncated or some sub directory?
If it's the root, you could send me your cache-file (or inspect it
yourself)
It's in the cache directory /SlimCtrl/GUUID/SC_fld#.dat.

Alternatively I could check what's going on by connecting to your
server from my place.
That's the fastest way to find and debug the error.

Cheers
Sebastian

Yes, good post.

I have an SB3 and a Boom, running SqueezeCenter on a RedHat server and
I'm very happy with it. I haven't moved to 7.4 because 7.3.3 is stable

I've also just finished converting my music (CD, MD and cassette) to

You're always going to see negative comments, that will never change.
Even when a product is the best of its class, or like the Squeezebox
line, simply the best. There are still problems with the software,
different people have different issues for different reasons. You're
always going to see it.

But there's nothing else out there that compares. No Sonos, no
Sooloos, not anything. It doesn't matter how much you're willing to
spend, you're not going to find better or more useful audio playing
software than Squeezebox Server, all things considered.

2010-01-18 Thread DaveKen

Hi Guys,
Apologies but this may be a long post.
Fascinated by the possible change in Touch order status, I thought I'd
check mine. On the relevant web page I was informed No Orders were
found when copy and pasting the order no. from Logitech's e-mail order
confirmation.
Quickly on to the phone (I'm in the UK) I was soon talking to a young
lady in USA (judging by ringing tone), who also told me she couldn't
find the order and was I sure about it. When told that I was reading it
from Logitech's confirmatory e-mail she put me on hold whist she spoke
to her supervisor. Acouple of minutes later she was back asking me for
my e-mail address and again put me on hold whilst she spoke to her
supervisor. A couple of minutes later she was back to confirm that the
order was found and that in was in process (not proGRESS) and read out
my delivery address for confirmation. I then asked what that meant
exactly and could she advise me of when it was likely to be shipped.
Again put on hold whilst she spoke to the supervisor and this time she
was away a lot longer. She returned to tell me that the supervisor was
not available, but would respond by e-mail or phone (I chose e-mail)
within 24 hours and gave me a reference no. for the call.
I'll keep you posted - keep your fingers crossed, the situation MAY
be changing.

I went ahead and got the Sony BDP-N460. I've had it about a week now,
and I really like it so far.

I'm using my Squeezebox Classic as a wireless bridge, so I only needed
a 4ft patch cable. Now Squeezebox gives me my music and helps me stream
video!

I haven't really tried Amazon yet (other than a sample HD trailer--it
looked really good). The quality of Netflix depends upon the
source--some streams are HD (e.g,. 30 Rock, Lost, some movies), while
some are comparable to the source DVDs (e.g., Murder, She Wrote--don't
laugh--I'm a huge fan).

Very little stuttering or buffering so far. I'm pretty pleased.

That's what I would like to understand, too.
iPeng doesn't talk to the player directly. It tells the server to which
the player is _currently_ connected to connect it to the new server and
the actual switch is then initiated by the server (the current one).

I have no idea what the server does, then.

I can reproduce cases in which the switch doesn't work (e.g. when I use
an ambiguous URL when connecting from over the internet but then usually
the plkayer stays connected to the original server.

It works for me, too (500Gb ReadyNAS Duo and an SB3 - hoping to expand
with a few more zones at some point!).

I agree with garym that the web interface is quite slow (although I
have an additional wireless (N) hop from the NAS to the router via an
ethernet bridge - not ideal, but I want it out of sight and out of
mind).

I tend to control the SB3 via the IR interface (using a Harmony 885
controller) or iPeng on my iTouch (which can also be a little slow, but
not as slow as the web interface). Although, to be honest, I didn't buy
the NAS specifically to host the server - I bought it as part of my
backup solution, and the serving was an added bonus. I'm happy with it.

[slim] Coverjuke - Album cover flow GUI works with SB

2010-01-18 Thread Fleury

I've grown increasingly dissatisfied with most of my music players, and
with the slow and buggy behavior of SC (using SC 7.3.1 currently). All
of them seem to get in the way of that pure and simple process of just
selecting something and playing it. Itunes is a mess, any program that
alters your files or adds new ones (invisible no less) is DOA for
serious music buffs. Winamp may be the best alternative, but (like
Itunes) it has grown increasingly bloated with each subsequent version.
And SC's web interface is just too S-L-O-W for big collections (48,000+
tracks in 3,550+ folders).

Moose filled the bill for a while, but the lack of an embedded player
in Moose or SC always meant one more buggy step to deal with. By the
time Moose or SC and softsqueeze or squeezeplay etc. were all up and
running and paged to the CD or track I wanted to hear, minutes would
have passed, along with the mood or opportunity to listen. Not to
mention the hours required for a rescan every few dozen CD's.

Coverjuke to the rescue! You'll find this little gem at Sourceforge:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/coverjuke/

It is a simple and fast XP/Vista emulation of Apple's glitzy cover flow
software. It gives you instant access to all your music folders, using
the folder.jpg etc. to quickly spin through your tunes. (And yes, I know
about the SB Album Flow applet, but those of us living without
controller units can only admire it from afar).

The cover slider can be dragged by the mouse, or arrow keys etc. can be
used to flip through the cover art. Find what you want give it the old
double click and you're tapping your toes to the tunes. Right click and
there are the filenames, you can select single tracks, even build a
playlist with Ctrl double clicks. It has a winamp plugin, or you can
point the prefs in the direction of your preferred external player, but
if you want simplicity the embedded player is instant and effective.
Nice package, and the price is right. There are no advanced music
management features, though it has a limited folder search function.
There are also several nice skins available - I like the black Vista
skin myself...

So how do you get it to work with your SB? Install the WaveInput
plugin, and go to the entry in your Favorites. (waveinput is the last
alpha entry in my favorites list so it's easy to get to by scrolling up
instead of down.) Now the SB is receiving the sound card output and
whatever you hear on the PC (for better or worse) is piped through the
SB (no way to synch, of course, and no track info on the display, which
I assume is due to using the plugin). Find the SC plugin and setup info
at:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/WaveInput_plugin

It takes a minute to initially load Coverjuke or to rescan for a big
collection, but it's WAY faster than SC or even Moose, and once it's up
you can hop around your collection at the speed of light. Try it!

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2010-01-18 Thread sbirsen

Hallo Locuth

What you said made me think, so I moved the last folders that
slimcontrol could read out of the directory. After some back and forth,
it turns out the reason slimcontrol was stopping to read was because of
this track name (don't judge me, I like the song :) :

GaryBarlow_-_OpenRoad_-_8_-_OpenRoad.wma

When I move this track out of the folder the whole folder is read to
the end as normal.

Now I don't know slimcontrol had problems because the track is wma, or
because of the underscores in the filename, or because it was a
protected file. When I changed the track name to

GaryBarlow - OpenRoad.wma

it failed again.

I still have the original file, please let me know if you need any info
further than what I have posted below :
Codec: Windows Media Audio 9
Duration: 4:21.999
Bitrate: 128.016 kbps
File Size: 4,522,597
WM Version: 9.00.00.3250
Seekable: Yes
Stridable: No
Broadcast: No
Protected: Yes
Trusted: Yes
Contains: Audio

Many thanks for pointing me in the right direction !

[slim] FLAC problems / Squeezebox 2

2010-01-18 Thread ajc79

Hello all,

I've recently re-ripped my music collection as FLAC instead of WMA.
Since doing this, i'm having problems with streaming music to my
Squeezebox 2.

The tracks will occasionally stop playing, the track timer bar just
pauses and the audio stops. Pressing play again starts the track playing
from the start. It happens on various FLAC files, and it didn't occur
before with WMA.

So far i've:

Done a network test on the Squeezebox and this is 100% for all tests
except 5000kbps, which stays at about 90%. Wifi signal is 90%, ping
times under 1ms.

I also connected the Squeezebox via cat5 rather than Wifi - the problem
still occurs

Re-applied firmware 130 to the Squeezebox - the problem still occurs

Checked the integrity of the FLAC files using 'flac -t' at the command
line (they were OK)

The server running Squeezebox Server (Version: 7.4.1) is a small
Windows Home Server, which doesn't have any obvious problems in
Performance Monitor and otherwise functions OK. It's not running any
other disk-intensive processes and has just been defragged.

I've read a couple of things about checking the amount of buffer the
squeezebox has, but I couldn't find these options - perhaps they were
only available in earlier versions of the software?

The only thing I have left to try is setting a static IP rather than
DHCP, but i'd be surprised if this fixes it.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Thanks in advance..

Re: [slim] Love My Squeezebox! What's The Equivalent For Video?

Nice little boxes for playing video.
ROKU is primarily for Netflix or Amazon steaming. Very easy to set up
and use.
WD TV Live is great for playing content off of a USB hard drive or your
network. Supports most audio and video formats. Has HDMI, ethernet,
optical audio, component and composite connections. Also works fairly
well for Netflix or Hulu if you use Playon on a PC on the network.

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2010-01-18 Thread Locuth

Hi again

I have an idea...

Please send me the original wma-file.
Plus, I'd like to have the full path to that track (on your server)
That is - from the server's point of view.

For example: if the track is
C:/Stuff/MyMusic/AlbumA/Track.wma

And you have set the SQCenter music directory to
C:/Stuff/MyMusic

The full path from the server's point of view would be:
/AlbumA/Track.wma

Edit: my email is sb AT sciatec DOT de

Pat, I wouldn't have disagreed a few months ago. But since the
product's pushed back, and there are substantive changes that have
relevance for all the players, I was hoping we're not all now
effectively waiting on the T as a chokepoint. Maybe it's not that big
of a deal to release a later version of software with the hardware.

Hopefully Andy can give us some insight here.

Re: [slim] No Squeezebox Server Found

2010-01-18 Thread RDK

Problem mostly solved! It seems my wife (or someone; not me)
reconnected the router wrong and had a second router (used for a
wireless phone that I don't use) looped through it. Not sure exactly
what the issue was, but it apparently prevented the SB and the computer
from connecting along the proper IP address. I had no idea the devices
were even connected.

But while they now connect, there still appears to be some issues as
the connection now cuts off after several minutes. It never did that
before either.

I just compiled squeezeslave for my PS3 running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic)

get the following errors upon starting squeezeslave and establishing the
connection to the XP PC running Squeezebox Server 7.4.1

Expression 'ret' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line:

Expression 'AlsaOpen( hostApi, parameters, streamDir, pcm )' failed in

Any thoughts?

[slim] Squeezebox v3 support

2010-01-18 Thread jonblauch

Does logitech support the v3 squeezebox? Searching their site, I can
find not reference to the product. They obviously want to sell the new
stuff, but I am a bit confused on the progression here. Did SlimDevices
get bought by Logitech and they are just ignoring these legacy
products?
Hoping someone can enlighten me - thanks.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox v3 support

2010-01-18 Thread mkozlows

Almost all of what the SB1/2/3 do is done through software; there's
really not much to the hardware (hence the Slim in Slim Devices).
So follow the Squeezebox Server threads, and you'll see what there is to
see.

Basically, they're not really doing anything that's specific to the old
units -- you're not going to get a new visualizer from Logitech, I don't
think -- but the new capabilities they introduce work on all forms of
Squeezeboxen whenever possible with hardware. And of course you could
get a Controller for your SB3 if you want fancy handheld GUI.
