[slim] Daily Squeezecenter crash

2010-04-11 Thread cliveb

This has been happening for ages, and it doesn't seem to affect the
normal running of the system, but I thought I'd finally try and figure
out what's going on...

I'm running Squeezecenter 7.3.2 on an Ubuntu machine. Every day (well,
every 24hours and 3mins to be exact - you could set your watch by it),
there's a segfault in squeezecenter-server. In fact there's a sequence
of 7 segfaults, one every 30 seconds. Then they stop, only to repeat
the next day. I note that the elapsed time for 7 failures 30 seconds
apart is 3 mins, so presumbly whatever it is that causes the segfaults
gets rescheduled for the next day after the 7 failures - hence the fact
it happens every 24 hours and 3 mins.

Clearly Squeezecenter (or perhaps a plugin?) is trying to do something
once a day, and gives up after 7 failures. I have Software Updates and
Library Rescanning switched OFF. Two questions:

1. What debug flags can I set to try and get more info about what's
happening?
2. How do I actually switch on the appropriate debug settings on an
Ubuntu installation?

Finally: please don't suggest that I upgrade to a newer version of
Squeezebox Server - the system is working fine (apart from this one
weirdness) and I'm not inclined to go through the hassle of updating on
the offchance it will fix this one tiny glitch.

'Swipe-right' is your friend:

Try swipe-left/righ also in the 'current playlist' in the main player

You might also like:

[slim] Squeezebox Classic - Internet Radio Problem

2010-04-11 Thread Brian L

I am using ver. 7.5.0 of the server software and have 2 Squeezebox
Classics (both using firmware 130) and my server is running Mac OS X.

I now longer have Internet Radio displayed in my home menu (on the
Squeezebox) but in the web admin interface it is displayed as an option
which has been selected for viewing in the home menu.

This means that I cannot browse internet radio stations through
RadioTime (or similar).

Has the affected anyone else? Can anyone help with a solution please?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't use the alarm feature, but your post prompted me to take a look
at the alarm settings. Although there were no alarms listed, the option
All Alarms was set to ON for two of my players (and OFF for the other
one). I've set them all to OFF, and we'll see what happens...

One other thing I forgot to mention in my initial posting is that I
don't use SqueezeNetwork. (As far as I'm aware I don't even have an
account, although it's possible I did create one a few years ago). The
SqueezeNetwork options are set to Integration=Disabled and Report
Statistics=No, so I don't think it's likely to be SqueezeCenter trying
to talk to SqueezeNetwork.

Re: [slim] Itunes Duplicates/triplicates being created - help

2010-04-11 Thread usch

Is the iTunes XML file on the network drive at all? For all I know,
iTunes always creates it in your user profile, no matter where the
actual music library is.

But generally I would recommend to use either iTunes integration or the
SB library scanner, but not both at the same time (i.e. leave the Music
Folder field in the server settings blank if you use iTunes
integration). Otherwise it is quite likely that tracks are imported
twice.

The switch should be automatic they think. So when on local server
everything you do goes trough the server,as the server can do all
webradio things too if correctly setup (no need to switch to mysb.com
when you have a server)

If the server is off and you choose webradio related stuff it shows a
message and switches to mysb.com

When on mysb.com and choosing my music it should switch over to your
local server.

For Boom: quick press of KNOB

Re: [slim] Problems rescanning library--mySQL corruption?

2010-04-11 Thread evencoil

I spoke too soon--more problems. Not sure why it worked previously but
after another full rescan (which I do nightly) it stopped working so I
went back to troubleshooting.

I did the following:
1. Removed all mp3s I've added since the problem began.
2. Completely remove squeezecenter, all preferences and plugins
including manually deleting folders and files that weren't handled by
apt.
3. Completely removed mysql
4. Rebooted
5. Installed the latest stable version of Squeezecenter and along with
it mySQL 5.0.51.

On the freshly loaded SC I also did not include a playlist directory.
Result:

Code:

  Directory Scan (12356 of 38157) Complete 00:25:20
  /media/500GB/music/collection/Iggy Pop/The Idiot/02. Nightclubbing.mp3
Music scan terminated unexpectedly (Directory Scan)
  Total Time: 00:25:20 (Sunday, April 11, 2010 / 7:46 AM)

And in server.log:

Yeah, it's there, but it is quite a long list.
Once you add this to your Home Menu you should be able to bypass the

Probably need to interrupt the connecting to SBS spinning circle by

Yes, but that works only if you haven't done anything else since you
started the station.

If you access any other menu or even press only the Home button, there
is no way back.

Correct, N still not needed.
I can stream full WAV's to three wireless SB players using a G router
without a hiccup.

I think where N might be a benefit to G devices (like SB players) is if
you have spotty G WiFi (interference, long distance to players, etc..).
But if your G WiFi is strong and doesn't suffer from such issues then
you would never know the difference between G or N.

Ah, ok. We need the whole menu back, not only Save to favorites. :)
There used to be technical information, too, like the station's URL and

I wonder when they sneaked that change in. I've been using 7.5 beta for

I completely agree! The new RadioTime context menu is neat, I like
it's additions. But lacking the most basic of station info (like you
said, bitrate and format) is just plain silly.

Even the choose a stream is neat, where you may be offered like four
different streams (at different bitrates) to choose from.
But this is POINTLESS information if I do not know which of those
streams I am currently connected too.

My suggested options:
1. put the More Info tab back
2. put stream info (bitrate format) as the first two context menu
items, then offer me You may like etc..
3. when I hit Choose a stream but a bullet or short note next to the
stream I am currently playing

Any one of the above would solve the issue, I'd prefer both 2 3
myself.

BTW: This change only affects RadioTime streams, all other streams are
just as before offering bitrate format info.

IMHO: I think a connect to SBS Home Menu option should be offered as
well, when connected to MySB.
I know you can do so by selecting My Music or Switch Libraries, but I

Re: [slim] 802.11N Wireless Support

2010-04-11 Thread Pat Farrell
bertdoozer wrote:
BTW: There is zero need for 11n for audio wireless.
Pat even if you are steaming your music in FLAC 24bit at 192KHz?

Yes, even if.

And of course, there is no real reason to use 192khz, since there is no
information there. Ill agree that 88.2 or 94 x 24 can be better than
44.1/16, but only can be not is.

The detailed data rates for RedBook (uncompressed PCM, aka 44.1/16) are
172 Kbytes/second. So it is easy to see that to make CD audio, you need
at about 1.5 Megabits per second.

If you go to 88.2kHz, you double it to ~3 megabits/second. Go to /24 and
multiply by 1.5, to ~4.5 megabits/sec. Raw, flac will compress RedBook
by about 50%, taking you back to ~2.2 mbs.

Since 802.11g delivers more than 50mbs, you have tons of room, and if
you insist, can double it again, since twice ~2.2 is still ~4.5. The
numbers are slightly bigger if you change from 172.4 to 192kHz, but not
enough to make a serious difference.

The bigger issue question is is there any signal up there and so far,
for nearly all studied cases, the answer is no. A fair amount of even
88.2 kHz recordings are just made from the 44.1 masters, so there is not
much, if any, signal above 22.1 kHz. The actual bits may be different,
as recordings sold to audiophiles tend to suffer less from Loudness
Wars, and may be mastered more carefully. But its not like the expensive
professional microphones out there have any ability to capture signals
much over 20kHz.

One also has to understand the realities of making a new product in the
SlimDevices space. The Touch was released to manufacturing last Summer.
Its design was finalized before the 11n spec was finalized. For a mass
market product like all of the SqueezeBoxen, its not really a matter of
when the spec part is finished, but rather its when do the chip makers
ramp up production so that the support chips are in large enough volume
to be inexpensive. Its one thing for early adopter geeks to want to by
the first 802.11n router, its another thing for LogiTech to order half a
million chips.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions (guesses?)

I was hoping that what needs to be done is to switch on the appropriate
debug logging. What I'm unclear about is how that is done. Do I just do
it via the Squeezecenter web interface (Settings Advanced Logging)?
And if so, which ones would people suggest might be worth switching on?
Does Squeezecenter need to be restarted after changing a log level?

Mind you, they are all set to error anyway, and presumably a segfault
is at least an error - but I see nothing in the logs corresponding to
the times of the segfaults. My guess is that the segfault just kills
the process, and it never gets a chance to write a log entry.

It's obvious from dmesg that whatever is crashing has a different
process ID each time. Anyone here know what daily procedures
Squeezecenter performs that it does by forking? That would at least
narrow it down.

Maybe enough will donate you can get your own ReadyNAS (just for
 research purposes, of course).

Small chance. With the current donations made I can by myself a couple
of CD's.

Somebody is working on getting Android on it now.
I've visited and called many O2 shops in London in the last days and
the Joggler was sold-out in all of them. :-(

I almost gave up, but today I've visited the O2 shop in Kensington High
Street and they had some in stock! I bought 2 of them and will try
Ubuntu/Android as soon as I'm back in Germany.

[slim] FS: SlimDevices Squeezebox3

2010-04-11 Thread boerner

I wasn't sure if posting a link to an eBay auction was okay, so please
feel free to remove this post if it is not permitted.

That being said, I am selling my Squeezebox 3 unit on eBay in
anticipation of upgrading to a Touch. The unit is in good condition and
is only branded by SlimDevices.

I am only posting this because I have seen some other posts from people
looking for a version 3/Classic unit.

Thanks

I've scoured the board(s) for any signs of blown capacitors and can't

and that still works cause it will interrupt the repeating start up
sequence if I press any buttons on the remote.

One thing I did notice as the sequence perpetually runs, sometimes
right before the logos cross the screen the Toslink gets
brighter...sometimes it goes out for a split second. Interesting that
its not behaving exactly the same every time. Any clues from that?

 Thanks.

 Todd

Have you been able to try another power supply like Dan has? If you can
put a meter on the power connection inside while the board is on and
report back the voltage, that would be helpful. The power supply will
read higher when not under load, so measuring it while unplugged from
the squeezebox would be irrelevant.

See if the voltage varies while starting up, or is low.

Re: [slim] 802.11N Wireless Support

2010-04-11 Thread dsdreamer

toby10;533258 Wrote:
 Correct, N still not needed.
I can stream full WAV's to three wireless SB players using a G router
 without a hiccup.

I think where N might be a benefit to G devices (like SB players) is if
you have spotty G WiFi (interference, long distance to players, etc..).
But if your G WiFi is strong and doesn't suffer from such issues then
you would never know the difference between G or N.

The ability of .11n to work reliably over long distances and use
spatial diversity to overcome interference is a very material point.
Additionally, dual band operation provides a significant boost to the
number of free channels you can use to escape the overcrowded 2.4GHz
band. Consider how many posts have been made to this forum on issues of
drop-outs and stuttering that turned out to be wireless related.

In my opinion, .11n is not needed for speed but it is needed for
robustness.

Or, I should say use of .11n is -one- way to obtain robustness. Another
approach would be to use technologies like SMSC's KLEER or Sonos'
proprietary SonosNet, which use various technical approaches that are
better suited to the QoS requirements of an audio link than is standard
wireless LAN in an overcrowded ISM band. I realize there are reasons
for being ideologically opposed to using proprietary networking.

These days, the best standardized technology for that would be
dual-band 802.11n with at least 2 spatial streams, even though it is
extreme overkill in terms of bandwidth for audio applications.
Fortunately, we get to reuse that network for many other things as well
(video streaming, downloading the latest Ubuntu 10.04 ISO images to our
laptops etc etc).

A final point on market adoption: 802.11n represented more than 19
percent of all WLAN access point shipments in the first three quarters
of 2009. Those early adopter geeks seem to have quite some purchasing
power...

But a lot of those 11n routers sold can't do the cool stuff. Only some
do 5gHz, only a subset of those do bonding between 2.4gHz and 5gHz, etc.

What people really want is to have WiFi be flawless. Which is a great
goal. And in a few years, when all the chips do both bands, bonding, etc
for $0.05 each, it will be part of the product line for Logitech and
everyone else.

Those early adopter geeks seem to have quite some purchasing
 power...

Geeks use having the latest and greatest as a proxy for another measurement.

Re: [slim] 802.11N Wireless Support

2010-04-11 Thread Wigster

On the other hand, there is a penalty associated with mixing g and n
clients on an n router: whenever it is communicating with the g client
it drops down to g for all the n clients too. If you are actually
streaming audio, this will mean that most of the time your network as a
whole is operating on a g standard.

You can avoid it by having two radios in your router of course, and
connecting all the g devices to one of them.

Re: [slim] I preferred the devices slim!

2010-04-11 Thread BlueScreenJunky

I couldn't agree more : I really like the simple devices with VFD
displays easily readable from a distance.
I have a SB3 and a SB Boom and use an android phone w/ squeezecommander
to control them, or the IR remote of course (and an harmony remote in
the living room). I'm perfectly happy with them and I have absolutely
no intention of moving to Radio or Touch... If I ever need a new
Squeezebox I'll probably try to find a second hand Classic :-/

I really wish logitech could make a squeezebox 4 : An updated SB3 with
a faster CPU to support 192Khz, more memory with more built-in codecs,
auto uplink, wifi n, maybe smoother scrolling of the titles and so
on...
