Re: [slim] New Boom on the Horizon?
I can only talk for myself but IMHO the Radio and the Touch is the best Squeezeboxes I've ever had. The Duet(including Controller) is the only disappointment I've seen recently. - Classic is great but a bit boring with the monochrome display after you've seen Touch/Radio - Duet was a disappointment for me but that's mainly because I want a central display - Transporter was probably excellent but a bit expensive for my taste considering the equipment I would be connecting it to. - Boom is great but a bit boring with the monochrome display after you've seen Touch/Radio - Radio is excellent besides the buggy alarm handling - Touch is the best Squeezebox I've ever seen (I'm not using the built-in server which clearly have some issues yet). We should also remember that all these Squeezeboxes was created while Slim Devices people was in charge and took the decisions. It's going to be more interesting to see where Logitech plans to go after this when all the old Slim Devices managers are gone. I suspect we are going to see more mass market related devices, with more focus on simplicity and less focus on audio quality, but that's just my personal guess. There are some possible new hardware versions that would make sense because they could be supported with minimal software changes: - Boom with color touch display - Receiver based on SqueezeOS - Controller with touch display (but I doubt they will do this as it will be extremely hard to compete with iPhone/iPad/Android hardware) However, personally I suspect Logitech will focus on selling existing products a while longer, the old devices shouldn't cost them too much in maintenance so there isn't any reason to get rid of them as long as they are able to sell the units they produce. It's easy to complain on Logitech but to be honest, can anyone mention one product from a competitor that beats the price/performance/features of the Squeezebox products, assuming you care about good audio quality ? -- erland Erland Isaksson ('My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info)) (Developer of 'many plugins/applets' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/User:Erland). And the SB3 had this feature removed the SB3 only has the setting: "You can fix the volume control at 100% if you are using the volume control on your amplifier to control loudness or need perfect digital passthrough. This affects both digital and analog volume." Older SB3 firmware had the option to fix digital out while still using the analog volume . On 5. I disagree, slightly. Never version are very stable for me, but the old ones was to. I have no big problems with sbs(I see things in the 7.6 beta, but it's the purpose of beta). A problem is that upgrading sometimes takes a completely clean install to function, just upgrading is not always cutting it (hence i slightly disagree). On 2. I simply don't understand the receiver has digital out and the Touch ?? Receiver is by far the cheapest thing they ever produced it has digital out. Touch is giving you 24/96 digital out at price that is a fraction off what a transporter costes you. So under logitechs flag digital out has gotten cheaper and better, you are wrong on this. Digital out on boom or radio would not make sense, they are standalone players with their own speakers not meant to plug in to your stereo, you want digital out on your car stereo to ? -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 and assorted amps SiriuS, Classe' Primare and Dynadio speakers, Contour 4 Contour Center, and Contour 1.3SE for the rear ch. While I as an employee have not always been happy with what decisions were taken, your list of criticism isn't fair. And it's a very personal list of issues too. Let's look at it another way: > 1. Unnecessarily changed the devices to linux computers to increase > complexity that their company's programmers can't handle. - users were asking for more codec support on the device - users were asking for artwork display - users were asking for a simple streaming solution - ... A change was needed because users wanted a lot which the old platform couldn't do any more. It's probably not the changes _you_ wanted, but a large part of our customer base did. > 2. Dropped the important digital out on most of their products except > top of the line. Consumers ended up with not much choices. What's your bottom of the line? Radio or the now dropped Classic? There are different products: with or without speakers. Those without speakers have digital out. Those with speakers don't. It's a different use case with different features. Not much choices? There used to be two products (Classic, Transporter). Today there are five (Transporter, Duet, Radio, Touch, Boom). > 3. In this age of global village, Logitech dropped support to display > international character sets. It's unfortunate that support for _some_ international characters was dropped. But others were added at the same time. And it's for sure not dropping all of them. > 4. Discontinued useful functions when their programmer cannot solve > their own problem. eg. Re: [slim] New Boom on the Horizon?
As a user, I was very disappointed with the product line in the last couple of years. My feeling is that Logitech is destroying the very good slimdevices line in the last few years. To we end users, we just want a device with good audio quality, simple user interface and reliable software. The old classic dump squeezeboxes just did the job well. What Logictech did was: 1. Unnecessarily changed the devices to linux computers to increase complexity that their company's programmers can't handle. 2. Dropped the important digital out on most of their products except top of the line. Consumers ended up with not much choices. 3. In this age of global village, Logitech dropped support to display international character sets. (need users to do their own mods to fix) 4. Discontinued useful functions when their programmer cannot solve their own problem. eg. Remote number keys for favorites; constant digital out level while having variable analogue out, etc. 5. Newer software even less stable than older version. I was a happy user when I bought my first squeezebox feeling the product was so much better than competition. My recent purchases ended up with a lot of time spent on finding workarounds. -- Honva Honva's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14948 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81045 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] New Boom on the Horizon?
The past few years have been tumultuous. Product completion and release delays, supply disruptions (which are still ongoing), etc. I wonder what the after-the-fact internal conclusions and action points are, if any? Or, are we looking at orphans, products lacking champions within the grand scheme of things at Logitech? On the embedded linux comment, people who have expertise and experience in such matters tell me that most companies are agnostic concerning which embedded OS's to use in products. Decisions are made based on many factors, including cost and timing considerations. "Cost" can involve many things, including development resources, specialized needs of the software, costs of tools and licenses, etc. Embedded linux can often be the right choice, and oftentimes not. If there were people who worked for nothing to make free construction-grade lumber available for construction, many houses would be build using it. It wouldn't have to be better than other choices if it were free, because "good enough" is often all that is needed. -- Goodsounds Goodsounds's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81045 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I regularly rip using the multi-encoder facility of dbpoweramp, making one flac file and one mp3 file (for use on portable devices). As far as I can tell, there is no barrier to using the multi-encoder to rip to two separate flac files in separate places. I don't know whether this would appreciably slow the process, though it might. There doesn't seem to be a significant slow-down with the dual format (flac and mp3) process. As others have pointed out, though, if you are going to have to do some tweaking of the tags or artwork, you will then have to do the tweaks twice -- if you do the tweaking after each rip, then you just need to copy the flac files to your external drive. The problem then is to set up a system for incrementally copying the new files to your external drive. I find Second Copy to work very well (http://www.secondcopy.com/). It allows scheduled or manual backups, using a variety of settings. I use it for several purposes -- the two main ones being copying changed files in my master folder (on an external drive that is permanently connected to my main computer) to my music server on the network, and copying the music files to a set of external hard drives that are rotated out to a safety deposit box at my bank. In effect I have three complete copies of my music -- 1. My main music folder to which all new music is ripped, and occasional lossy downloads stored; 2. the hard drive on my dedicated music server (a FitPC2); 3. the backup drives stored in the safety deposit box at the bank. If my house burns down, I'll still have the latter, and will lose only the most recently ripped music. I rotate them out of the safety deposit box every couple of months. Re: [slim] Playlist Move Up/Down Buttons?
I just played around with it and the behavior depends on whether or not you have album art shown in the playlist. It may even depend on the title format that you use, but I didn't spend too much time with it. I tested 7.5.2 in Firefox 3.6.8 and Google Chrome 5.0.375.125 beta. With artwork shown, in both browsers I can grab anywhere within the item, including links, to drag the item. With artwork hidden, if I grab within the track title link or album name link then the item won't drag. Firefox displays a circle/slash mouse icon. In Chrome the mouse icon switches from a hand to an arrow. So yeah, it can be a little tricky. -- JJZolx JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81043 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Let's make the Squeezebox to the ultimate music discovery device!
1. HOW DO YOU FIND MUSIC IN YOUR OWN LIBRARY ? About 50% of the time, I know what album I want, and get there via Artist/Album. If it's a "various artists" compilation thing, I go directly to it by Album. Perhaps 40% I use a playlist. Most of my playlists are created with a specific mood and/or genre in mind, so I can pick one that suits me pretty easily. On rare occasion I use the standard Random play by genre. Even more rarely, I use the Search, if I want to find all the different recordings of a particular song or something like that. The other 10% or so of my listening time is not from my own library, but from the Internet; almost all of my "outside" listening is from XM or Pandora. I have Duets and a Boom, and I also use SoftSqueeze on occasion, usually with wireless headphones when I'm not near any sort of receiver. I use the Controllers to control the Duet Receivers and SoftSqueeze, and sometimes for the Boom, but usually when I'm using the Boom it's near enough that I can use the front panel or the IR remote. It's very rare for me to use a browser to control my Squeezeboxen. If I'm sitting at a computer anyway, I am more likely to use J. River to play music directly on the PC, say in my office. To browse, select and play on the SB devices, the Controller is a much better way for me to go. I don't use any custom add-ons for browsing, and haven't felt a need for them. I know my library pretty well, and can find what I want very quickly using the standard My Music browse features. (My library is just over 1000 albums. I can see where a much larger library might necessitate other search/browse options.) 2. HOW DO YOU USUALLY FIND NEW MUSIC YOU LIKE TO GET BUT CURRENTLY DON'T HAVE IN YOUR LIBRARY ? I discover new music primarily from three sources: Stuff I hear on Pandora or XM, and recommendations from friends. On rare occasion I might listen to samples from an album recommended by Amazon. I don't listen to broadcast, commercial radio stations, either over the air or on the Net. My wish list of albums I haven't yet got generally numbers around 250, so there's not much danger of running out of ideas for new music for awhile. I've pretty much always heard at least a track or two before I buy an album. This doesn't always guarantee I'll like the entire album once I get it, but I can usually be sure I'll like at least some of it. 3. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE ABLE TO FIND MUSIC IN YOUR OWN LIBRARY IN THE FUTURE ? I'm very satisfied with the standard browse/search/select funtionality in the existing Controller and Boom interfaces, so I haven't really felt like I'm missing anything. If I happened to read a suggestion for a new method that I thought I might find useful, I'd express an interest, but since I have never even felt the need to install any custom search/browse add-on, I must be pretty happy with the way it works out of the box. 4. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO FIND NEW MUSIC YOU LIKE TO BUY/GET IN THE FUTURE ? Having such a large backlog of music I still don't have, I'm not hurting for new sources of music. 5. WHAT KIND OF TAGGING/MANAGEMENT DO YOU DO ON NEW MUSIC YOU ADD TO YOUR LIBRARY TO MAKE IT EASIER TO FIND STUFF LATER ON ? When I rip a CD, I always check the tags dbPoweramp grabbed. About 98% of the time, I have to fix spelling, punctuation, genre or something. I'm very meticulous and fussy about my tags. I've never found a need to use any non-standard tags or anything that SBS doesn't currently handle. I suppose the only area that I think could use improvement is in the classical stuff, but I can't imagine that ever getting a wide enough user base to make it much of a priority. Folder structure is important only to me, obviously not to SBS (well, apart from the all-under-one-master-folder restriction, which has never been a problem for me). I organize the folders in a fairly standard way (MainFolder/FileType/Artist/Album), to make it easier for me to find a particular album or song from outside of SBS. I do keep my FLAC (vast majority of my library) separate from MP3 stuff, and I also keep a parallel library of all the FLACs converted to MP3 for use in portables and so forth. I don't do ratings; I know what I like, and if I don't like it, it probably isn't in my library anyway. 6. DO YOU SYNCHRONIZE THE DATA IN SBS WITH SOME OTHER APPLICATION TO MAKE IT EASIER TO FIND INTERESTING MUSIC ? Don't use statistics or ratings. I do use J. River as a player on PCs, and it uses the same library that SBS does. It keeps in sync via its normal scans. I also use it pretty much exclusively to create and maintain playlists, which I then export as M3Us, run through a text editor macro to convert the path structure, and save into the SBS playlist directory. Then I just do a rescan of the playlists in SBS. -- Dogberry2 Dogberry2's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18883 View this thread: http://forums.slimd

I also downloaded an App called WOL and it also fails to wake up the server. The WOL tool is configured to send 5 wake up packets every 5 seconds, but it does not do anything either. My laptop is connected via WiFi to the same router. I use Fusion WOL to send the WOL packets to my server and it works just fine. I would be nice if I didn't need to use my laptop to wake up the server or use the IR remote to put the server to sleep. One more thing... is there a way to clear the current playlist? I would like to add several tracks/albums while there are no tracks playing (Blank Playlist) But... it would also be nice if there was an option to clear the playlist "except" for the currently playing track. -- tamanaco tamanaco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4620 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69352 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

That has not been my experience. My Radio has worked since very early in the beta process. Granted, I have never been tempted to use it as a clock radio with alarms, so I have skipped a lot of pain that others see. From what tea leaves I can see, the Radio was rushed when the Touch missed the Christmas sales cycle. Not a lot of news that it was not a smooth effort. But I have zero problems with mine. > Touch's development was a freaking nightmare. That's > all. That is your opinion and your words. The Touch as a SlimDevice came together fairly quickly. The UI was rough, but the basics worked from early on. It was the damn TinySBS that has been a schedule killer. Not a lot of news here, embedded systems are a lot harder than normal computer/consumer applications. I will argue that if they left the "server reads from USB disks and thumb drives" off the advertising copy, they could have had a successful product nearly a year earlier. I personally have zero interest in TinySBS. It does not solve any problems that I have. Again, whether or not it is called a "SqueezeOS platform", all modern devices like the Touch have an embedded Linux in them. Its how its done for low volume stuff, which included these days 40 inch TVs, that sell far more units than any SqueezeBox ever will. There are bathroom scales with Bluetooth or WiFi, they have embedded Linux in them. Perhaps they had too many features on the checklist, perhaps the engineers were bad, or the engineering management was bad, that is water over the damn. If there is a follow-on product, its going to be built using a touch screen and an embedded Linux base. The smart phone industry (do I need to mention that the most popular smartphone has a linux embedded system in it) has driven the market to demand touch screens. And the volumes seen in smartphones have driven the prices for touchscreens down to levels that could not have been imagined when the Touch was first created. I wonder if the the great deals at logitech.com (via coupon codes) and Amazon on the Boom are a reflection of the need to "move product" to make way for a replacement. If they need to provide that steep of a monitary incentive to sell product, it seems like they need to have something new and compelling. This makes sense for the Boom, but I wonder why coupon codes keep popping up for fantastic deals on the Touch. Thanks Ralph. I made more progress last night and was able to get pandora to work with SS when I changed the MAC. I think I need to make a batch file with the new MAC address, is that correct? Otherwise I need to start from a command line every time I start windows. Is there another way to save the squeezeslave.exe with a different MAC address? If anyone knows, they aren't going to reveal it on these forums. Logitech usually don't comment unreleased products. A new upgraded Boom is a logical step and Logitech would probably be able to release one without any major software changes compared to the Radio. However, it would still be a surprise to me if they released any new Squeezebox hardware during the next month. Re: [slim] Let's make the Squeezebox to the ultimate music discovery device!
1. HOW DO YOU FIND MUSIC IN YOUR OWN LIBRARY ? Usually My Music > Albums (which are sorted by Artist / Year / Albums, so it's a lot like browsing by artist), and sometimes My Music > New Music. - most of the time I use the SBC, but sometimes also web ui and player menus (be it Boom's front panel, Touch's touchscreen, or IR remote). - I don't use ratings, play counts, history at all, and don't really have any interest in doing so - I use MusicIP _a_lot_ - I do use album art when selecting, mostly because it's faster - Yes, often I search/browse by artist and want to find something related to that 2. HOW DO YOU USUALLY FIND NEW MUSIC YOU LIKE TO GET BUT CURRENTLY DON'T HAVE IN YOUR LIBRARY ? - friends, music press, Internet radio, Pandora, Napster, Last.fm - Artist stations, similar artists, etc. - I use Napster and Amazon web sites. I also often read up on artists at allmusic.com - I use both SBs and computer to search for music. - When possible I "preview" music on Napster, on my main systems, for days or weeks before purchasing. In this case "preview" means playing the whole album, not only clips. I buy the CD when it's something I think I'll want to keep, at true CD quality. 3. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE ABLE TO FIND MUSIC IN YOUR OWN LIBRARY IN THE FUTURE ? I don't use search much in my own library. It's only 6k tracks, and I know most of what I have. What I've forgotten I usually rediscover via MusicIP random playlists. What browsing functionality is missing today? A "similar artists" or "similar music" type function that pulls up a list of suitable albums and artists. Something like MusicIP that generates a browse list instead of a playlist. That would be great! 4. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO FIND NEW MUSIC YOU LIKE TO BUY/GET IN THE FUTURE ? Through SB, computer, reading reviews in newspapers and magazines, friends' recommendations. On SB, it would be great to have a similar artists type function that would work both within my library and outside my library. I think Pandora (seed it with something from your library), Napster automix, last.fm, and probably Rhapsody do this pretty well (though each slightly different), so for SBS it would require doing something better. 5. WHAT KIND OF TAGGING/MANAGEMENT DO YOU DO ON NEW MUSIC YOU ADD TO YOUR LIBRARY TO MAKE IT EASIER TO FIND STUFF LATER ON ? The tags I add are "handled" by standard SBS, but they aren't part of standard browsing. Such as COMPOSER, though I don't think I'd use that much. - I almost never use BMF, but folder structure is important to me for overall file management. - I don't use Custom Scan. I don't manually add ratings because they would change too much over time, it's too much work, and it's not very helpful to me at all. 6. DO YOU SYNCHRONIZE THE DATA IN SBS WITH SOME OTHER APPLICATION TO MAKE IT EASIER TO FIND INTERESTING MUSIC ? I don't use any play statistics. I do use MusicIP fingerprints extensively. -- aubuti Nothing high-end, but music anywhere I want it, and it's '100% wind powered' (http://www.cleancurrents.com/). Very well put, that is -exactly- my experience too. I find my Synology extremely reliable so my wife, children and guests can happily choose and play music to their hearts content, and I don't need to worry. It is a doddle to set up and run and is minimal maintenance. Since I installed the 7.5.0 update I have not had to touch the Synology at all. It has run 24/7, cool, quiet and almost invisible. In that time I have added about 30 albums and run 10 rescans. We use Napster, BBC iPlayer and other internet radio without a hitch. For the casual and non-techie user it is the easiest installation of SBS to maintain. Normally I would not recommend SqueezeBox stuff because of SBS and MySB issues, but if they bought a Synology NAS to go with the player then I would be happy to set it up for them, knowing that there would be no major issues to deal with. -- TheLastMan Matt *SqueezeBoxes:* SB Duet (Controller + two receivers) *Server:* Synology Diskstation 107+ NAS (with firmware 2.3-1157) running Squeezebox Server 7.5.0 on Synology Package Manager *Network:* Netgear DG834GT ADSL modem/router, 2 x Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 as access points *Livingroom:* Receiver into Naim 42/110 amp, B&W CM2 speakers *Kitchen:* Receiver into Denon DM37 mini-system, B&W 686 speakers *Study:* Linn LP12, Naim 72/Hi-cap/Headline. Re: [slim] Which NAS?
I feel some nuance is in order. The TO starts his post by asking what NAS would suite his needs. Simply implying a NAS is unsuitable to run SBS is just not true. In my opinion it's ok to post alternatives that could better suite his situation. But at the same time, we must realize not everybody who owns a Squeezebox is a computer-enthousiast that knows how to build his own server and install, configure and maintain a linux-distro on it himself. Or like myself, have the time at hand and feel like Googling for a few hours in order to solve a problem that might arise over time. I'm perfectly happy with the Synology DS210+ I have now. It's probably slower than most dual-atom systems out there, not as flexible either. But it suits my needs perfectly; it's fast enough to run SBS in a way that it lives up to my expectations, it's power-consumption is low, it's reliable so that my girlfriend doesn't encounter problems during everyday use and that I don't have to go through embarracing moments when a demonstration to friends goes up in smoke when showing off my fancy music-system and the server is posing problems, Synology takes care of preparing updates that offer new features and for me as a linux-nono I can install them without worrying about having to fiddle with the configuration the entire afternoon. So yes, there are alternatives that are faster, there are alternatives that use even less power, there are alternatives that are more flexible in the future. But at the same time, for most people, a NAS that offers the ability to install SBS on it is probably a very nice solution that will life up to their expectations just perfectly. -- hvb83 hvb83's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39615 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80747 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Non-LAN IP address used by SBs?
Hi, Could someone please explain an observation I mode both with a SB Duet and SB Radio regarding the IP addresses used? In the extended settings, there is an entry providing diagnostic informationen. I can see, amongst other things, the IP address of the SB, the DNS server's IP address, and the gateway's IP address. These values are the ones provided by my local DHCP server. But then there is also a submenu entry providing information about the selected player. Under IP it lists my internet router's "outside" IP address, the one assigned by my provider. What are the SBs using that IP adddress for? Does that interfere with my router's NAT functionality?
