It looks very promising for the bohemian accommodations I now have
while on assignment. I have a few questions and a request before I
decide to purchase though:

Your recommend using the Slimdevices link for LAME set up. Terribly,
they recommend iTunes-LAME. I don't let iTunes anywhere near my FLAC
collection. What other options do you know of? (This one is a deal
breaker since my 700GB FLAC collection is staying as-is and at present
is only accessed by Squeezeserver -> Transporter.)

Second, can this app be ported to an iPhone 4 running 4.x in the future
and will it necessitate a second purchase or will that particular
upgrade simply add iPhone compatibility?

Best,
K

[slim] SB3 no longer connects

2010-09-01 Thread downtime

I have two Squeezebox 3's. I've had a silver one for three years and
bought a black one recently. Both have been working well.

The new one no longer connects to the server or mysqueezebox. I've done
a factory reset and a hard reset without any luck.

I can go through the setup menus until Select a music source.
Regardless of whether I choose mysqueezebox.com or the squeezebox
server, when I then press the right arrow, the screen goes black and
that's it.

It can't be the modem, router, or server because the other Squeezebox
works fine. But just to be sure, I've reset them all. The old one
connects and the new one doesn't (but it used to).

Any ideas?

Thanks.

The Apple TV does use/consume the Airplay streams.

I believe you can only stream from iOS4 devices and iTunes, but I'm not
sure whether the API will allow apps such as spotify to stream as well.
I'd be pretty surprised but it could happen.

Another note is that they are licensing Airplay to speaker/dock
manufacturers so that you can push the music to them too.

It doesn't seem that different to AirTunes or Microsoft "send to
device"/media center, its just got that ease of use/polish/mainstream
that Apple brings.

Something like this, but open source/pluggable and able to push to
squeezeboxen would be ideal for me.

As for it bringing Logitech sales I fear the opposite could just as
easily be the case.

Though not a big fan of the Transporter, I'd say that it looks like a
much better proposition than the Marantz. The key thing is the

Sorry for replying to my own message...

I've downloaded the source zip file.

I also downloaded and installed something called ActivePerl.

I strongly suspect that the downloads have to come together now to make

perl.exe file and it rather unhelpfully gave me an empty dos box. Tips
would be very handy right now...

I have to agree - I'm losing faith in pretty much all of them when they
turn to Digital Audio and NMP's in particular. Even those who are quite
cogent when talking about analogue gear and even fairly scientific in
their approach completely fall to pieces and start rambling inanely
when faced with NMP's or anything with a computer anywhere near it.

If I was really cynical, I'd suspect a conspiracy to spread NMP FUD
through the community. I just find it bizarre that NONE of them can get
to grips with the rudiments of the technology involved - let alone
communicate accurately with their audience.
I'm not picking any individuals out here because they ALL do it!.

I can just about tolerate their endless - and seemingly boundless -
praise for vinyl, despite them all knowing that all these super new
pressings they are spending a fortune on have all been cut from digital
masters (ADC'd from the masters or remixed from the multi-tracks -
they've all been digitized en route). I can tolerate it because
cutting/pressing the vinyl can create a sound that many people like.
Accurate - no. Nice sounding - yes.

But when they get on to the sound of Sata cables... on an TCP/IP based
interface... oh dear.

What next? Disk Drives, m-boards, routers, ethernet cable...?

And as for the pearl of wisdom that goes "All digital signals are
intrinsically analogue..." so must be subject to all the paranoia that
goes with looking after the analogue signal (cables etc).

Well "no sh*t, Sherlock" - You've just missed the entire point. In the
TRUE digital domain of computer interfaces (ie NOT the nightmare that
is s/pdif) it doesn't matter, because as with most things to do with
computers, they either work reliably or they don't. There isn't a
middle ground where they can be made to deliver "better information".
There is NO subjectivity here. Computers are 100% deterministic. They
either work or they don't. Period.

AAARGH!

Click two checkboxes in the same row/column.

I see there's a problem because there always should be one master.
Perhaps the masters could be the columns and the slaves the rows.

I don't really use syncing a lot, but that's probably partly because the

Assigned should be fine. My reasoning behind it is to have consistent
volume level. When I put my son to sleep, I want to know where the
volume level is rather than winging it every time. It doesn't have to
be a dB level A simple 0 to 100% should suffice.

Something similar to the Duet controller volume button.

The fact that he does not understand that makes me completely lose
faith in Malcolm Steward as a reviewer as he clearly does not
understand hi-fi, let alone computers!

I think a lot of hi-fi journalists are technically incompetent and very
"suggestible". Sound quality is so subjective and open to psychological
bias that a clear understanding of the technical aspects of sound
reproduction is essential in order to be aware of what is likely, and
unlikely, to affect sound quality - and to what extent.

The main point of course is "rubbish in, rubbish out". Each stage in
the music reproduction chain can only add distortion, not information.
A friend recently commented how much better "Squeezebox" music sounded
through the speakers in my living room compared to my kitchen ones (the
Receivers were synched and we were walking back and forth between the
rooms). What he failed to appreciate is that the kitchen ones are on
the end of a £450 all-in-one CD/Tuner system and the living-room ones
are powered by a quite awesome pre/power amplifier whose current
equivalent costs over £3,000 (and is a bargain at that price).

Having since listened to both pairs of speakers on the end of the Naim
amps I would say they sound very similar. But then I might be biased!

That's more like it, in fact the T20 model looks to be just the ticket

Re: [slim] Net::UDAP - SqueezeBox Receiver configuration tool

2010-09-01 Thread digital_davem

Hi

I posted this on the udap mailing list but repeated here in case it
didn't get through

---

Hi

I expect you are fed up with the same old ignorant newbie questions but
I am at a lost as to what else to do.

I have just purchased the receiver only part of the Duet with a view to
controlling it with my ipod touch. I understand this is possible with
apps like the ipenq. I also understand that the official handset is
required for setting up a new squeezebox receiver but that the
net::udap utilility was created to emulate the handset and allow you to
do it from your PC without the controller handset.

So. here's where I'm at:

1. I have broadband through O2, using a re-branded Thomson
ethernet/wireless router/adsl box.

2. I have a PC running Windows Vista and Ubuntu linux connected to the
router using a cable.

3. I have installed the Squeezecentre v7 software on the PC (under
windows)

4. I downloaded and installed this UDAP windows executable:
slim2lirc.myown.mailcan.com/udap_shell_1_0_0.exe

5. I connected the SBR to the O2 router using a cable

6. I used a browser on the PC to open the router admin page and check
it could see the SBR. It does, althought the status field says
"Inactive" (the status field for the connection to my PC says
"Active").

7. I checked the light on the SBR. It is slowly flashing red about once
every 7 or 8 secs

8. I ran the UDAP executable program on my PC. It opened a command line
with the prompt Udap>.

9. I typed "discover" at the prompt

10. A bunch of messages appeared on the screen (about a dozen lines)
saying something to the effect that the program expected something to
be returned with a length of 6 characters but was getting 0 length
responses.

11. Prompt re-appears

12. I typed "list"

13. Some underlined headings appeared on the screen but no further
information

14. I'm completely stuck.

As you may have gathered, I am not TCP/IP networking savvy nor a
programmer. I have tried to follow any forum posts or references I can
google but most of the instructions, advice, tips and examples are
somewhat over my head. I have dabbled with some rudimentary javascript
and asp classic before but mainly I am a html/css coder and I have an
IT team at work to deal with all the technical stuff, so although this
Squeezebox stuff sounded straight forward enough at first sight, I very
quickly got in above my head.

I would prefer not to have to buy the handset, so if someone could hold
my hand I would be extremely grateful.

Thanks very much

Dave

Doh! Why didn't I check whether the plugin was up to date?

(I guess because I use it every day for live streaming and that was
working fine.)

Anyway, now sorted. Thanks!

I have an other idea (a few years ago actually) for a different syncing
interface that might be worth considering, suppose we have 4 players,
named P1 to P4. You could create a matrix of checkboxes like this.

http://slim2lirc.myown.mailcan.com/syncmatrix.html

To create a sync between player 1 and 3, just place a checkmark in
column P1 and row P3. This is actually redundant, since every button is
duplicated. You could leave out the top right half and put the labels
underneath, ending up with a triangle of checkboxes. A bit like a break
out box, really.

Long player names will be a bit of a problem, though...

Could be a quick way to sync/unsync things. Dragging an dropping is
always a bit of a hassle IMHO.

Regards,
Peter

These Creative speakers always get good reviews ...

Look good and are in your price bracket. Haven't heard them myself,
but if you like them might snap up a pair!

Like many US brands sold in the UK, Bose are over-priced. Generally
for US products the exchange rate is $1.00 = £1.00 when comparing the
US price with the UK one. So the Bose speakers are £100 rather than the
£66 that the true exchange rate of $1 = £0.66 would imply, and which
would be competitive with similar speakers from other manufacturers.

Mind you they are *much* better looking than Logitech speakers (to my
eyes at least) so I might top-up my daughters funds so she can buy them
if she prefers them to the Logitech. She does not want a sub-woofer so I
am comparing them to the' Logitech Z520 '
or what!) which I can pick up for about £68.

I have given up on the iPod dock with Aux input as an alternative, as
anything decent is about twice her budget and probably not as good
sounding. She only has an 8GB iPod, all her music is on the SBS server
anyway, and she likes to surf Napster. So she tends to iPeng rather
than iPod when listening at home. Having her do that in her own room
rather than on the livingroom hi-fi will be worth a little extra
funding!

As an aside, my main PC is still connected to a pair of Altec Lansing
active speakers from a 1976 vintage Gateway PC, the only bit of it I
still own. They are great sounding, albeit plug-ugly. Pity Altec
Lansing don't sell anything like it still (at least in the UK). They
only seem to make tiny and tinny speakers at £30 or 5.1 multimedia
sets.
