Controller works with Touch too, so you can have both ;) thats one nice
thing with sbs architechture all controllers works for all players as
everything goes via the server anyway .

controller= squeezebox controller, iPad iPhone android web-UI etc

player= all hardware squeexeboxes ever done + all software squeezeboxes

I guess someone has to go against the grain here. I run a Duet on a
older Sony amp to some old ADS L810 speakers and the sound is
excellent! Once set up I've found that the Duet is rock solid and I run
it WiFi. The controller is responsive and it's great to have total
control of the music without having to go to the stereo or the PC. I've
been running the Duet for over 2 years and the most trouble I've had has
been with the recent upgrade to Win7 SP1 along with SBS 7.5.3 which I
did get ironed out (from what I read it sounds like the Duet wasn't
alone with Win7 SP1 and 7.5.3 SBS). I've never had a stutter or skip,
it just plays. I also just bought a 2nd Duet for the basement stereo.
I'll admit that the Touch has some better specs, but the convenience of
the controller with the Duet is the winner for me.

1.1.1 only has one change to fix an issue with the NP screen not updating after
switching to a different player on the same server.

Do you see the German version of the market page or EN? It seems Mickey only

Yes, iPeng for iPad. I often have "New Music" open, but the crash was
so random, I hadn't notice whether it crashed while I was at "New
Music".

I'm using iOS 4.3.1 and Squeezebox server 7.5.2. But the crashes
happened with older versions of iOS and SBS as well.

As for Playback, I was using it on iPhone iOS 4.3.1, same SBS 7.5.2. I
was just playing 16/44.1 CD rips in FLAC.

Ah, I didn't realize you need to double click to switch song on the
Playlist screen saver page.

The SqueezeBox Radio, nice as it is, is just not a substitute for a
good stereo table radio. B*s* has proven that over and over for many
years running.

At the other end of the spectrum, one could do themselves quite well
with the purchase a Touch and high quality amp and great speakers. But
realistically, so many customers just don't have the interest,
knowledge or bank account to go there.

Bottom line: A stereo all-in-one table player, such as a Boom II, would
be a very compelling product for a great many customers. I hope it
shows up soon. I need to purchase some more.

Re: [slim] newbie multi zone question

2011-04-06 Thread kswanson

I'm running squeezebox server and Windows Home Server on my desktop. I
converted my flac files on my NAS to Apple lossless in iTunes and set
up iTunes only because I wanted to be able to load my iPod with Apple
lossless to be able to use in my car audio system. My NAS is still
flac. So I have SB server on my desktop and iTunes aren't really
necessary from what I'm understanding in order to get my music files to
my larger system. It is 5.1 but I'm using a Meridian system so I would
go 2 channel via SPDIF from whatever into my processor I think. Then I
could use an iPad for control? In that case the SB Touch downstairs
connected via ethernet (wall adaptor) is the best way to go?

Re: [slim] Duet or Touch

Touch all the way. The sound quality is better than the Duet and it is
less finicky to set up. If you're gunshy about EOL, you should know
that the Duet Receiver will be the next to go, as after the Boom it
will be the last SB based on the ip3k platform.

For controlling the Touch there is the touchscreen and the included IR
remote. You can also add a separate Duet Controller, or better yet, an
iPhone/iPad/iPod with iPeng app, or an Android phone with appropriate
app.

So you guys are mind readers too :-)

I do have a couple rooms without players and the only reason I don't
get additional players now is I have a feeling there are some newer
model(s) coming out soon with the Boom apparently being EOL.

I do have a Duet that needs a sound system and I'm looking for
something (considering Onkyo HT-S9300THX). The room the Duet will be
located in has easy access to a switch so it will be hard wired.

Re: [slim] newbie multi zone question

2011-04-06 Thread tcutting

Where are you running Squeezeboxserver?
With Squeezebox system, multi zone usually means adding additional
squeezeboxes. Assuming your "larger system downstairs" is a good audio
2-channel system, best bet would be to add a Touch down there. You
would then have 2 Touch'es, each can connect to your Squeezeboxserver
either via wired ethernet (preferred for reliability reasons) or wifi.
The Touch supports playback of 24/96 lossless files (FLAC for sure, not
sure if Apple lossless is supported "natively" by the Touch, but if you
are running your Squeezeboxserver on a reasonable PC (not your NAS), the
Squeezeboxserver can support transcoding from Apple lossless to FLAC if
needed).
You probably want a copy of ALL your music files available to your
Squeezeboxserver - this could be on a drive local to the
Squeezeboxserver PC, or I suppose could be available through your NAS.

[slim] Duet or Touch

2011-04-06 Thread bitstopjoe

Since I sent my Boom back to Logitech, and they no longer make it, I
have a choice of waiting for the Booms replacement ( could be MONTHS)
or take a Touch or a Duet in its place. From what I have seen online I
am leaning towards the Touch because of the USB and SD card input.
Since I am Boomless I started hooking up some old audo equipment and
like how it sounds. Not top of the line like I used to have 30 or so
years ago, but plesant enough ( Mirage SM-2.5 speakers which I had to
re-foam the woofers first).
So that is why I am thinking of not waiting for the BoomII, or
whatever it is called ( son of Boom? :)

So any ideas to help me lean in the right direction? I mean since I
now have some audio it makes no sense for a Boom II, right??

Have experienced issue with this app on one of my setup once running
sbs offline playing my local music collection. My transporter is not
found and app says there is no Wi-Fi ...and player not found.
Notice this transporter never saw mysqueezebox.com, as I have no web
access from this location.

Is it necessary to add that it works flawless with my iTouch running
iPeng, even Logitech Controller can see this player. For me it's a
bug...

for me:

1. IPAD running either iPENGHD or SqueezePad (I have both and like
both). And the IPAD is a great web surfing device.

2. Small laptop, running SqueezePlay or just the SbS GUI for
controlling other SB Players. Obviously can do lots of other things
too. I mostly use this at the kitchen table rather than on the couch.

3. iPeng on my iPHONE. Useful because always in my pocket and the iPAD
is not.

I strongly second that. Standard confirmation dialog on Android should
look like this:
"Bla bla bla"
[Ok] [Cancel]

Also, when the controller app can't connect to a network, it cannot be
closed by hitting back button (it just scans for network again). You
have to force close to exit.

Re: [slim] Reliable radio alarm clock

2011-04-06 Thread bluegaspode

Some clarifications about Boom and Radio alarm:

- both have an internal timer for the next alarm, so go off, when your
server fails to send a signal at alarm time
- only the Radio actively (and very aggressively) checks, whether a
stream is playing. So while a Boom might get a signal from the
(working) server 'please play this stream', it will fail the alarm, if
the stream does not properly connnect (or stops inbetween).
The Radio checks every 10 seconds if there is an active stream and will
sound the fallback alarm. Only a 'silent' stream makes the Radio think
everything is fine, while there is still no sound from the speaker.

Also the Radio will sound the fallback alarm when it lost connection to
the server. This is because it does not trust the server anymore once it
has lost the connection.
Typically a server sends a 'right now nothing is playing' signal when
it is restarting (as it doesn't know that there is still some alarm
after a restart), thus silencing a maybe still running alarm on a
Boom.

So if something is flaky - the Radio will sound the fallback alarm
quite often (which in turn might also annoy people).
Boom does not sound the fallback alarm as often - but in reality has
less measures to prevent you from not waking up.

Last common problem with alarms: These fallback mechanism ONLY work,
when the Radio or Boom does know about the next alarm.
Many people find it convenient to change alarm time via the
web-interface, iPhone/Android/iPad remotes, whatever. When doing this,
you will never know, if the alarm arrived on the Radio/or Boom.
Typically this doesn't give problem - at alarm time the server triggers
the alarm anyway. But on the rare occasions when the server is not
sending the signal due to problem, the Radio/Boom never knew the time
when a backup alarm should sound - and won't wake you up.

So to have a reliable (fallback) alarm, one needs to setup alarm time
directly on the Radio (as then one would realize if the Radio/Boom
probably does not have a connection to the server).

Dang, I shouldn't have said anything! This morning, for the first time
in the year and some I've had it, the Boom alarm didn't go off. I was
listening when I went to bed, so it had connection since the last alarm
cycle. But when I woke up it had all the lights on as it does when it's
lost connection, but the alarm icon wasn't on and the alarm hadn't
sounded.

As usual, when I turned on my Duet Controller, as soon as it booted up
to the menu the Boom reset correctly, with just the Power button lit,
the alarm icon on and tomorrow's alarm scheduled. Oh well, thank
goodness for cats who know when it's time for breakfast!
