I'm just asking because I'm seriously interested to hear why people select Squeezebox over Sonos, if you compare their specifications they are fairly similar and everyone more or less knows that Sonos just works while it usually takes a bit of time until you have configured the Squeezebox system to behave this way. The Squeezebox is rumored on these forum to have higher audio quality but no one seems to have compared them in a blind test, which is the only way to know for sure. My local HiFi reseller strongly recommended Sonos for its higher audio quality but I personally don't trust them because they probably have a higher margin on Sonos so that's why they want to sell them instead of Squeezebox Touch. I tried to do a comparison myself based on the specifications a few days back in this post: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=646795#post646795 (But I have no real world experience of Sonos, so I'm not sure if I'm correct) For me... 1. [slim] Welcome to Squeezebox Server message in mp3-stream
When I stream music via VLC and switch on the MSN Now playing option, Messenger only picks up the Welcome to Squeezebox server message that obviously and for qurious reasons comes with the stream. In the VLC configuration of metadata artist and title are displayed together and correctly in the Now playing field while the annoying Welcome-text is shown in the Title field. Unfortunately Messenger only shows the latter. Hopefully Messenger switch to the adequate meta if the Welcome-message is disabled. One snag for me is how their software handles the artwork. If you look at their QA it is clear that album art stored with the name 'cover' within the album folder will not be recognised (the artwork name needs to be the same as the album name). My 2 penneth... Been a SB fan for 3+ years. I can't recall what lead me to SB or indeed why I wanted to listen to streamed music. I remember, I think seeing the Roku soundbridge and thinking it would be cool but on further research serendipity brought me to the SB system. I have SB3, two booms and a radio. All players connected by wifi and all on the same floor (bungalow). Use FLAC on a dedicated atom powered pc running XP pro and my system is rock solid, no drop outs or rebuffering for years now. I install updates to SBS when suggested and it just works, sync on the booms and the SB3 and the whole place just rocks (much to the annoyance of my Mrs) I don't run any plugins other than lazy search. Ok, did some further googling and found the accurate HTTP.pm file with the icy-name line. Commented it out and restarted the server. But - gah! - VLC still displays the title-info. No longer the Welcome-message but the stream URL. Suppose this is a quirky way of communication between the server and VLC and between VLC and the Now playing-option in MSN. VLC clearly got it right in its Now playing-field with correct artist and song info so why doesn't the Messenger just pick that info up and leave the title info to the rest...?
