Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] new features on iPad: SqueezePad 1.8.0 hits the store!

2011-08-20 Thread bluegaspode

SqueezePad 1.8.1 has been released to the AppStore.

It fixes two bugs, that only very few users realized at all:

- SqueezePad tried to render big artwork in the context menu, this has
been removed
- a small number of people upgrading to 1.8.0 might have faced a crash
when opening the player window. This only happened when users had an
advanced networking setup where the server autodetection did not work.

[slim] Possible to have different music for different players?

2011-08-20 Thread ITemplate

Hi,

As subject says. I wan't to get my oldest son a player like the radio.
And this is where my troubles start. I don't want some of my music to
be visible on his player. Is it possible to differentiate like that? Or
perhaps some third party plugin for this?

[slim] No sound from players

2011-08-20 Thread paul44birch

Help. I have yet again been promted to update the firmware which I have
done, but i was unable to connect, so I did a fresh reinstall from
mysqueezebox.com. The good news is that all my missing playlists have
returned (they were lost with the last update!) but i cannot get any
sound from any of my players (radio, transporter, squeezeplay). I can
access my music and see the track, however when i press play it says
now playing but no sound. Whats interesting is that the tracking bar
does not seem to be moving so its as if the track has not actually
started.

This is a new one for me so any help appreciated.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...

2011-08-20 Thread undret

bluegaspode;650736 Wrote:
Yes Controller commands first go to the server, which sends them back
 (if needed) to the player.
So there is just an indirect connection between SqueezeCommander and
 SqueezePlayer.
So it might be that the 'pause' command can get lost on the way back or
forth. But this is a really small packet so a slow network (working)
connection shouldn't be a big problem.

As said: I rather think that SqueezePlayer only accepts a 'pause' when
it's in the playing state (as buffering right now is implemented as an
(automatic) pause - so I guess an explicit pause is just ignored).

Yes. Have you reproduced?

After a few more tests, I think that the problem appears if the buffer
goes empty while playback regardless of why. Then as soon as a piece of
data is written on it, that piece is immediately consumed for playback
leaving the buffer empty again. And there it seems to be stuck in that
loop showing buffering/playing one second each approx with small
percentages shown.
When playing I copied large files across the WLAN to put load on it,
and then the player kept stuttering in the loop even though network
capacity later had returned.

Even in HSPA, there can be small periods with low throughput. If that
is enough for the player to empty its buffer, there we go again. Stuck
there even though network is improved.

It was now a while ago, but I have seen it also when I connect to an
internet radio station where the data from the stream initially appears
low. That happened mostly with shoutcast streams.

If I am on a mobile network, then if I press | or | it sometimes
happen as well.

If the buffer is allowed to fill up slightly more before playing, then
that might help (in addition to what you write in your comment)? Or
what do you think? Or if the user could do some configuration of a
threshold value here if this is device-dependent.

It is very hard to give exact instructions to reproduce since it all
depends on network conditions. And probably on my device as well.

Thanks!

I use a Verbatim drive at 1 or 2 TB ,mainly because there is not much

Imho many name brands comes loaded with CD player emulaters and other
bizzare software that gets auto installed etc , a total nuisance the
main purpose is to place a brand logo at your desktop and tray not to

So a great idea is to buy enclosures at the PC shop, an empty box with

I don't know who doing the best HD at the moment WD or Samsung or

OK

So if you use eSata you can have the same performance but with added
clutter .

Can eSata be mounted as easy as an USB drive if you for whatever reason
want to remove it ? no risk of data coruption.

Re: [slim] What External Harddrive(s) used 4 CD storage

2011-08-20 Thread slate

For my work office setup, which is software only (SBS+SqueezeSlave), I
use a 250 GB WD Passport (USB2).
Used that setup for the last 2½ years; but today I have bought a 1 GB
Passport (USB3) as space was running low.

I choose the Passport as it fit 2 parameters:
1. small 2½
2. as it does not need an external powersupply.

Years ago I bought a cabinet with external PSU for 3,5 IDE harddrives.
Granted 2½ years ago it would have been cheaper to buy a big IDE drive
and use that; but it is noisy and have a lumb of a PSU.

2011-08-20 Thread Mnyb

OK I here i disagree sligthly :) I'm a bit ludite here i like 3,5
enclosures with a lump of PSU just don't trust any laptop derived
tech.

And to op. Yes running your own server is superior to use tan USB drive
directly to the PC .

SBS will probably perform much better regardless of drive, at least
compared to use directly to the Touch it's not that critical anymore.

There are other criteria here .

Quality ? don't have extensive insights the computer pros's on this
forum have much more knowledge than me .

And aesthetics nice looking and no external psu is important for some
people.

But the general consensus is to use a good backup strategy so you are
looking for 2 drives one to use and =one for backup(s) .

This is a fact eventually all hard-drives fail or something else fails
and corrupt the data, given enough time this will happen.

If you spent 100's of hours tagging and ripping you don't want that.

Look at the remote's LED through a digital camera. You should see the
LED glow on the camera's screen when you press a button. If it doesn't
glow, try wiggling the batteries the LED see if it does. Chances
are it's just a duff connection on either the battery terminals or the
LED itself. Both easily rectified with basic soldering skills.

2011-08-20 Thread Gingernut63

@sander

If the MonkeySqueeze script installed then the user guide should have
installed as well??

Go to the mmip file monkeysqueezev150110814.mmip and change the
extension to .zip. Extract the contents to a folder using your
preferred compression program (winrar, winzip etc ...). In the folder
you will find the MonkeySqueeze_UserGuide.pdf. Place it in C:\Program
Files\MediaMonkey\Scripts\Auto so it can be accessed via the button on
the settings page.

Note: The default location for MediaMonkey in a 32 bit PC is C:\Program
Files\MediaMonkey in a 64 bit PC it is C:\Program Files
(x86)\MediaMonkey.

When you look at the music database management in MediaMonkey and
compare it with Squeezebox Server you will find it is light years in
front and it gives you a lot of options and flexibility. Try the
following site for tagging but be careful as some of it may relate only
to version 4 currently under beta testing.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...

2011-08-20 Thread bluegaspode

regardless of buffering techniques: if the (average) download rate is
too slow for the content to be streamed one will get into the
playing/buffering cycle in any case.
I think it wouldn't matter if the cycle is each second or every 5
seconds. It annoys the user and one just cannot stream if the bandwidth
is not high enough.
No fancy technique will circumvent it.

With buffer sizes one can only manage to accomodate for short
variations of bandwidth.
Right now SqueezePlayer uses the following buffer sizes:
- audiobuffer: 1,7MB (44100 * 2 /*channel*/* 2 /*bytes*/* 10
/*seconds*/ )
- download-buffer: 1MB (this will be 1min of 128kB/sec mp3)

So when buffers are filled, SqueezePad can play up to 1minute of
128kB/sec mp3 when the bandwidth goes down. 1 minute !

On Android one cannot use larger buffers, as Apps are very restricted
by the OS regarding memory allocations.
But actually these are really huge buffers already: if something does
not play with these buffers, then the bandwidth is just not high enough
or there are insane variations in the download speed.

After a few more tests, I think that the problem appears if the buffer
goes empty while playback regardless of why. Then as soon as a piece of
data is written on it, that piece is immediately consumed for playback
 leaving the buffer empty again.

When SqueezePlayer faces a buffer underrun, it typically waits for
391680 bytes in the audiobuffer to be filled again (this is 2 seconds
with 2channel 44kHz). For FLAC files it even waits 100 bytes
(5seconds at 44kHz).

IF the stream is downloading fast enough this should be enough of a
headstart, to allow for robust streaming. If not - well - as said - not
technique will help then in my opinion.

I think this could be what you're looking for.

Essentially you can customise the menus to limit what the kids can get
to, and then use the MultiLibrary plugin to limit them to a subset of
 the library.

Since I design systems, I'm wondering how you would separate the music.
Is there a split in the directory tree or would it be based-on artist or
what ?

I haven't used MultiLibrary yet but I believe you define library
delineators based on the directory structure. I'd guess that with
CustomBrowse you could probably also do it on a tag basis.
