[slim] Players powering up randomly
I have four players in a synched group - SB3, Touch, Boom and Radio. I often find that after starting one of them playing, one of the other players starts playing as well, even though all are set to 'Power off/on separately' in the synch settings. It is very difficult to diagnose any sort of pattern to this behaviour, because I'm not always aware when one of the players starts up by itself - the Touch and SB3 only make a sound if their respective amps are powered up, and the Radio is upstairs in a bedroom with its volume set quite low. Usually it is some time after starting up a player that I will wonder into another room and notice that another player is on too. However, to try and troubleshoot this I've started checking the other players when I start one up, assuming I remember to do so. What I think I've noticed is that the Radio is the most likely to come on when another player starts, and it does so as soon as that other player starts. If I then turn the Radio off, it seems to stay off regardless of what I do to the other players within the next few minutes. But if I come back to one of the other players later on and select a new playlist, change the volume etc, there's a good chance that the Radio will come back on. It's as though there is a 'reset' period. At first I wondered whether iPeng was the culprit, since that is my main method of controlling all my players, but after seeing my Radio power up by itself when turning on the Touch from its touch screen I think I can let iPeng off the hook. Has anyone else seen this behaviour? Setup: LMS 7.7.0 (although this was happening in 7.5.something too) OS X 10.6.8 on a Mac Mini All players connected wirelessly to an Airport Extreme router, server wired iPeng 1.4.3 running on iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1 -- chill chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91831 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I left my Touch connected only to it's own TinySC server for one week, never connecting it to LMS or MySB. It has maintained the correct time so far (7 days). Now there are two aspects of my usage that may differ from yours which might possibly explain why I am getting accurate Touch clock usage (to the minute, did not bother with seconds). 1. Touch is streaming from the internet via My Apps most of the time, therefore utilizing MySB.com in the background 2. I use Erlands Daylight Clock as it's clock/screensaver (a very cool screensaver I might add ;)) It could be that because of either or both 1 2 the Touch is doing a sort of check in with the online servers (MySB and/or www.die.net which is part of Erlands screensaver) therefore maintaining accurate time? Dunno for sure, just thought this might help further diagnose your Touch clock drift issue, possibly even resolve it with Erlands screensaver. Re: [slim] Time is off
I speculate that problem is for tiny lms users only and that it fails to check the clock with mysb.com during these circumstances . And there are users who don't network thier network music player :) (Intended use is networked with internet conection) Most computers and computer like things don't have a real rtc, it's all derived from the cpu clock. And often depends on check with time servers. Quality is probaly varied so Toby's Touch may keep it's time better than mine for example. But then again I don't get why logitech reinvents the wheel and does not use the standard ntp solution ? Is there a purpose behind keeping the server and player at the exect time base, for example alarms ? [slim] Scanner issues
I have noticed that many people are flumaxed by the scanning process as was I. It proved unpredictable and often is a great source of frustration and fury for many users often leading to abandoning Squeeze altogether. I have been using Squeezeserver since Slimserver 6.x. For a long time now I have battled to scan my music into Squeeze. I have approx 100 000 tracks and the scan would take (if it completed) more than 6 hours and would be completely unpredictable. I run on windows WIN7: Home Premium I had previously thought that one of the following was the problem: 1. Rogue UTF8/16 Ecoding 2. A Rogue track ripped on unix box/ Itunes Mac 3. Some funny char in a Tag of sorts 4. An illegal char in Filename. I finally had some time on my hands and decided to try and resolve the issue once and for all. I came across a huge directories of unsorted music buried deep in my collection. 1. There were 8000 tracks. All had the same AlbumArtist and had the same Album 1.1 It seemd that LMS (Slim/Squeeze/Logitech Media Server) tried to create an a single album out of this folder. It seemd to get stuck in this directory for hours. 2. To resolve, I used MusicIp to update Album and Artist and with MP3Tag I updated album artist and created ordered subfolders off the Directory structure. This fixed the scan. It now takes a predictable 120 minutes to do a complete scan on my old Server. I am posting this to: 1. Inform user who are having problems scanning. You may need to sort out your rogue directories first 2. Inform developers to perhaps try and code around this issue or look at it seriously in order to help new users and speed up scanning in this type of instance. Re: [slim] Thank you Slim Devices.
Agreed. Ive been around since SB2/3 and slimserver 6. Best money I've ever spent on any electronics. It has literally transformered how I can listen to music. I'd still be happy even if things hadn't changed since then. The fact that it has evolved with Internet music streaming.for freeis a bonus. Simply the best value for three hundred pounds nearly 8 years later!! To put it in perspective..every PC I owned at the time has long since died, or been superceeded.
