C) What > happens when an album has, say, one track by a guest artist on which > the main artist doesn't appear? Then it gets marked as a compilation > anyway. I understand there is no Track Artist tag but there appears to be a track artist entry in the DB and it is the only way to talk about the actual ARTIST tag without the ambiguity that goes with the server grouping ALBUMARTIST (and the variations of the tag; BAND, ALBUM ARTIST, etc). A) As for identifying the song artists, why should it not be able to do that? It is already doing that by identifying compilations based on the artists NOT being the same on an album. It shouldn't slow down scanning substantially, and even if it slows it down is it going to render the software useless? I don't scan that often. Doubling the scanning time wouldn't kill the usability of the server/device. B) Why should I care if no software does it? There's a thing called innovation. Heck, if it wasn't for innovation, we wouldn't have our Squeezeboxes at all. C)I wasn't being absolute... I was throwing out an idea. The logic could easily dismiss an album being a compilation if an artist was present on 90% of the tracks or 80% of the tracks. I don't know what the answer would be. Ultimately, a user would still have the option of over-riding the settings to their liking. As it is, in my own system, I had to set the ALBUMARTIST tags to VARIOUS ARTISTS for all my compilations because my previous software(s) didn't have the sophistication to know what a compilation was or a COMPILATION tag, and in fact I didn't know what a COMPILATION tag was until I had to troubleshoot my own problems with the Squeezebox software and Various Artists tags (thanks to people like yourself and others on this forum). I can respect your points of view, and if I had started my tagging efforts with this software and this system only, I'd probably have adopted them. But I haven't, and I am not going to change it to fit something that really doesn't have one right answer anyway. The ambiguity we have has made for a fuzzy situation, but it is what allows us to do what we want with our music and tags. -- emalvick emalvick's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35382 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92049 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] SBS vs LMS vs SSOTS
One server software, but five different names. That's quite easy: ;-) - SliMP3 Server, initially - SlimServer ("SS"), from release 5.0.0 to release 6.5.4 - SqueezeCenter ("SC"), from release 7.0.0 to release 7.3.3 - Squeezebox Server ("SBS"), from release 7.4.0 to release 7.6.1 - Logitech Media Server ("LMS"), starting from release 7.7.0 SSOTS was historically for "SlimServer On TurboStation" (and followed SSODS, SlimServer On DiskStation), but - although its name hasn't changed - it's followed the server software's evolution. SSODS/SSOTS is a third-party distribution of the server software that's been specifically designed to run on some NAS boxes. Latest SSODS/SSOTS release is 4.14, and supports Squeezebox Server 7.6.1. There's no (official) release available for LMS, yet. -- sebp 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/sebp) sebp's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11768 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92077 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Thank you Slim Devices.
I've stated it in other threads, but it's true that my Duet and Boom have changed the way I listen to music. Music has always been important to me, but just having local stations and a few CD's kept me from having it on all the time and, more importantly, exposing myself to more depth and breadth of music of all types. Now music surrounds me all the time, with services and stations that constantly expose me to new music and genres. Who'd have believed a few years ago that I could go to sleep listening to traditional Scandinavian music and wake up to Latin Pop direct from Mexico City? Re: [slim] Transporter Display - bit depth and frequency
Although it'll make things look better, the MusicInfoScreen plugin isn't mandatory. All you need is to define a new title format from the web UI (Settings > Interface), calling the SAMPLESIZE (bit depth) and SAMPLERATE (frequency) keywords. Something like this, for example: TITLE [SAMPLESIZE/SAMPLERATE] Then, just select it as the default title format for your player (Settings > Player > Basic Settings, from the web UI). Note that SAMPLERATE appears as Hz, not kHz (i.e. 44100, not 44.1) -- sebp 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/sebp) sebp's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11768 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92083 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Squeezeslave: 1.0 released
First. Love SqueezeSlave. Great work! I found myself looking for something like this because of hi-rez support. I was encouraged to see a wasapi version but upon using it, all my hi-rez material and SACD rips were down-sampled to 44.1khz. Of course, further reading shows that the limitation is within the original code of squeezeslave(correct me if I'm wrong). I use SPDIF output on my computer to an external DAC and the DAC displays what the sample rate is locked in at. My question is, isn't the point of a wasapi build to "passthrough" the audio file as is? If I launch XBMC and play the music file (using ffdshow codec, WASAPI SPDIF output within XMBC), the music same music files lock in at the correct sample sizes (ie 88khz, 176khz...etc). Is it possible to implement SqueezeSlave in a similar passthrough manner? Even the SqueezeBox hardware themselves are limited through SPDIF. The Touch maxes out at 96/24 and all other players before the Touch downsample hi-rez material to 48/24,16 or 44/24,16 . I was hoping SqueezeSlave would break the barrier. I have a Touch, 2 duets and a classic and have quite a few SACDs recently ripped that are sampled at 176/24 and 192/24. If SqueezeSlave can be implemented the way XMBC passes audio, I'll sell all my players and donate the profits to your team. I'm guessing many people would be willing to pay for a version like this because it would provide something Logitech does not currently provide. And yes, I could use XBMC but I'd have to organize multiple sets of playlists and VortexBox is not an option for me because I'm not ready to wipe out my existing media computer for a new OS :) -- donny619 donny619's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=52001 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83362 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I leave this blank UNLESS I want the comp album to be credited to a certain artist. For example, I want my Gram Parsons Tribute Album to show up under the artist listing for Gram Parsons, so I add "Gram Parsons" as album artist. I want the album to show up under a generic artist name rather than the specific name (Neil Young as AA even though "Neil Young & Crazy Horse" as Track Artist. First of all, I'm glad to have found this Community. Have been reading for hours and days, before I bought my SB products, and now that I have them I still keep reading and learning. (You'll note I wrote "SB product*s*"). You see, just a few days ago I bought a new Touch. Connected to my vacuum tubed power amps, DIY dac and Vandersteen 2C speakers, it blew me away. What's more, it was on sale for $50 off!! Then just a day later, I saw the same store had the SBRadio on sale also for $50 off. Took it home (for the bedroom). Sync'd them up and now the "cat" is grooving to 500+ jazz stations, not to mention his personal library, yeah man!! I always have to have good, swingin' music flowing through the house. Used to have XM satellite. It was OK until the merger with Sirius, after which it went down the tubes for my tastes. Cancelled the subs and dumped all my Sat-Rad gear. So to end this unabashed fan letter, I'm so happy to have discovered Logitech SB. I love it. It's changed my musical life! I'm sure the people from Logitech look in here sometimes. Internet Radio usage would essentially be down too cut & paste basic URLS's from other programs into your Favorites. -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91090 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Good Squeezebox alternative?
As a result of my quest for an alternative system to Squeezebox I'm going to buy a Touch. The store where I usually buy these thing have them for 239 Euro. They are currently sold out though. I guess this is due to the holiday season. I sold one of my SB3's when I bought the Sonos ZP90. But now that I've sold the Sonos player I'm going to complete my system again with a Touch. For me there is still no Squeezebox alternative out there. As to your question about listening to radio streams without mysqueezebox.com, yes that is possible. You can use a local server instead, or you can use TinySBS inside the Touch. Many radio stations have an URL for audio streaming and don't require a plugin. -- Pascal Hibon 2 x SB3, 1 x SB Boom and 1 x SB Radio - all wireless ReadyNAS NVX running SBS iPeng on iPod Touch. Re: [slim] Good Squeezebox alternative?
The discussion is getting hot ;-) There was quite simple question: what can be used as an alternative to my duet? Receiving an offer for Apple TV (second generation) with price tag below 100 Euro (Touch costs still 250+) I see it would be hard to keep the battle Again, I am happy with my Logitech setup, just worry about its future. if mysb.com will be off will my whole system be able to listen radio? -- AndreE == Duet: 2 Controllers + 4 Receivers and 1 Touch Intel Atom 330 Linux Server wired Ethernet to 1Gb Switch --> Router --> DSL --> net... and happy Family ! Re: [slim] Good Squeezebox alternative?
That is just one of the many advantages of Squeezebox; no matter how one wants to use it, it is supported by the system. Users have the option to use a computer (PC / laptop) to control the system. But users who don't want to use a computer (PC / laptop) to control the system have many options too (iPones, iPads, Android devices and even Blackberry). Same thing goes for the local server: users have the choise not to have a local server, or run the local server on a NAS, PC, laptop etc. The Squeezebox system is able to integrate into your existing environment very easy and adapt itself to your way of working. -- Pascal Hibon 2 x SB3, 1 x SB Boom and 1 x SB Radio - all wireless ReadyNAS NVX running SBS iPeng on iPod Touch.
