Re: [slim] Can SqueezePlay control an UPnP client ?

2011-12-12 Thread bluegaspode

No,

- your library will be available to other UPNP devices.
- your Squeezeboxes also will turn up as UPNP renderers so can be
remote controlled with other remotes (with a lot of missing features).

but no remote controlling of other devices (as far as I know)

I now have 2 Touch in use one complete duet and one SB3 in storage and
one unopend Touch in it's box just in case.

One Radio and the only ip3k player in use is Boom, here I agree no
current player can replace boom.

SB3 is a design classic but I prefer the Touch .

using iPad, in my kitchen I can use the Touch with ir if I must, I can
read the display there.

2011-12-12 Thread Goodsounds

Don't get too sentimental about your SB3s if you haven't heard the
superior sound of a Touch through your sound system. If you're using an
external DAC, then I guess it's mostly a UI matter and not so
substantive a difference.

I'm still using my SB3s in other rooms, but I'll happily replace them
when they die (assuming there are Touches on the market to buy at that
time).

Unfortunately does not work, as Google "forgot" to provide NDK (native
development kit support) for GTV :(

http://code.google.com/intl/de-DE/tv/android/docs/gtv_android_features.html#NDK

Which is definitely stupid, as most games use NDK as well to be
portable among different platforms. I do use the native development kit
for fast FLAC decoding in SqueezePlayer.

PS: Please don't tell me that honeycomb does support FLAC - yes it
sorta does but only for its own MediaPlayer. Developers that need to
implement their own streaming cannot make any use of it.

So let's wait another two years until Google provides the next
firmware, then we can have hope again ...

Yeah, the VFD display players are looking outdated and would have long

Yes, just add each of the songs into the Now Playing list, then save it
with a name if you want to re-use the playlist later. Ufortunately,
it's kind of annoying if you use replay gain because most of the
Rhapsody songs will play much louder than the local ones.

Interesting. I definitely come at this from a specific perspective (my
own, haha) and since I have a small music collection (<300 albums) I've
never had trouble using the jump-to-letter keypad entry scrolling
system on the VFD-based SB's. LazySearch also solved that problem well
in a different way. But I can see how it could be more frustrating with
a really large collection.

For me, the always-on nature, instant response, and legibility of the
VFDs is the big win. I don't want to have to wander over to the stereo
to control the Touch. And when I do want to control or browse with a
screen like that I'd prefer do it from my laptop, iPad*, or
smartphone*.

* I don't currently have these devices, but if I wanted a Touch-like
interface I'd buy one of them.

Disagree in part, the Duet sucked originally but got there in the end,
its now a very stable product.

The Touch is the only product that makes it easy to use a large music
collection, being able to spin through albums etc is brilliant compared
to scrolling line by line on a SB3!

[slim] How to create a playlist with some local library songs, some Rhapsody songs?

2011-12-12 Thread t-chok

Is it possible to create a playlist that is composed of some local
library songs along with some Rhapsody songs? (i.e., the Rhapsody
songs would be streamed, not ones that I've purchased and downloaded).
Perhaps this is obvious, but I can't figure it out

I have a SB3 and a Touch, and I usually use Rhapsody via my PC's SBS,
not via MySb.com

Thanks a lot for any advice!

Could you make it so that the button under the d-pad would simulate a
finger touching (a click essentially) and simultaneously swiping with
another finger? I do this all of the time on a laptop where you select
something and you need to drag it. You hold down the "mouse" button
with your thumb and drag using your pointer or middle finger.

Perhaps this is the idea that you have that requires a lot of recoding.

I didn't even notice I needed to swipe lists! I use the D-pad and the

2011-12-12 Thread FredFredrickson

I use my duet daily. I also use my touch daily. The radio is a great
player to have during the summer for patio bbq, but during the winter
the thing just sits there.

I have nothing to say but good things regarding the receivers. The
controller is a little clunky for anything beyond random-mix or
skipping tracks. I wish I had grabbed more receivers when they were
cheap (and available). Right now I'm set for every room in the house,
but when I move to a bigger place, I'm not sure what I'll do!

Please logitech! Don't kill squeezebox!

Heh... I'm shocked... ;-) I haven't tried it in a while, but last time I
did, it was slower than most of the phones and pods I have to test with...
But admittedly they seem to have improved performance in recent firmware
builds of the revue. Today it doesn't seem that poor any more.

But how do you navigate? I mean... this app is written for a touch screen.
How do you swipe lists? This was basically the deal breaker for us: we
would have had to re-write large parts to make better use of the d-pad on
the keyboard etc.

But then you have a full keyboard, probably better rely on the search than
on scrolling. Hm... interesting :-).

[slim] Listen to z100 of MSB.com on SB3

2011-12-12 Thread yeomanspc

Trying to listen to NY z100 on SB3 conected to MSB.com. Located in NY.
Always used to work, and does if I listen through my server (7.62 and
7.71). I know z100 is location dependent (must be in US - and I am).
When I tune in through MSB.com it tries to connect and then just sits
there.

URL on my server is
http://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s29453&formats=aac,ogg,mp3,wmpro,wma,wmvoice&partnerId=16&serial=840681f98ea82a5ffa8a2c3d735b18e0
I wondered if radiotime is sending incompatible stream to SB3, but SBS
is able to transform it for the SB3. Any way to change?

Re: [slim] OMG Awesome set up with googletv

2011-12-12 Thread FredFredrickson

It's so incredibly easy I'll walk you through it!

Step 1. Settings. Go to the apps list, and chose the settings for
applications > Check the box "unknown sources"

This will allow third party apps.

(the rest is copy pasta)

Open the Google Chrome web browser on your GTV and navigate to:
https://www.dropbox.com/

2. Click “Log In” at the top right corner of that webpage

3. Sign in using the following credentials:

login: gtvmar...@gmail.com
password: GTV2011

There is an APK in the main directory for logitech squeezebox remote.

5. At this time, you can select any of the applications listed to
install. Once the file is downloaded, long press the Home button on
your GTV remote and head over to “Notifications”. From there you can
click on the file you just downloaded and you will be greeted with
installer prompt. Simply select “install” and then agree to the
disclaimer about the system access that application will have access
to. Now you are ready to launch that application by selecting “Open”
or you can select “Done” and rest assured, that application will now be
available in your app drawer.

[slim] OMG Awesome set up with googletv

2011-12-12 Thread FredFredrickson

I'm a squeezebox purist. I hate having pandora on my TV and Roku,
because I know it's not my music library and it's not synchronized with
my kitchen and bedroom.

So last night, my logitech revue updated to Honeycomb, and I managed to
sideload a few APKs that are not in the google market. One of them was
the Logitech Squeezebox App.

OH MY GOD. Logitech! Put this app in the google marketplace for
googletv. It works FANTASTICALLY on the big screen.

Nothing makes me happier than the fact that I can now use the tv with
friends and family at my christmas party next week. And when we listen
to pandora, rhapsody, or my own library, it'll all be nice and
synchronized.

Re: [slim] Just 5 years and a bit less than 2 month Logitech has acquired Slim Devices

2011-12-12 Thread ajkidle

The Duet was my first Squeezebox -- and so while I can understand the
bad name it has earned (somewhat rightfully, I admit) I am very
grateful for that product line as it introduced me to the world of SB.
It's easy to bash the Duet now, but keep in mind that it was launched
only 6 months after the first iPhone was released, and certainly was
out before the AppStore existed. Without getting sidetracked into a
love/hate Apple thread, there is no denying that the iPhone has been
tremendously disruptive. The SBC might look redundant or even silly
today, but in a pre-iPhone world I think it makes perfect sense that
Slim/Logi pursued a portable controller.

I missed out on the pre-Logitech days, but I can say that it feels
different now than it did in early 2008 when I started paying
attention. The team is so much smaller now and new product development
seems to have stalled. Although Andy's comments of late give me hope
that there could be a revival upon us...

Anyone heard what Sean or Dean are up to these days? It's unfortunate
to not see them on these boards anymore. Figure this must have been
something they loved as much (and probably more) than the rest of us
here--sad that they no longer seem to be a part of this community.

What happens if you just use Internet Radio or a different service App?
Does it still insist on switching to MySB.com? If yes then something
is wrong with your setup.

Tried just stopping then restarting LMS on your NAS? Any other program

I presume your NAS and LMS are indeed running when you select MOG?

Yes, it got a lot better. I was a beta tester and it was virtually
unusable for the first year or so (fair enough, it was a beta after
all). It slowly improved to the point where now it works reasonably
reliably, but even when everything works perfectly I still can't bear
the amount of time it takes to wake the thing up and navigate through
the interface. It makes even just seeing what's currently playing a
chore.

Re: [slim] Just 5 years and a bit less than 2 month Logitech has acquired Slim Devices

2011-12-12 Thread yeomanspc

To be fair to Logitech, it must be hard to please everyone - even I find
that one week I have one opinion on what kind of player / message they
should push, and then that changes a few weeks later. People claim the
duet is a disaster and I am inclined to agree except that since I got
an ipad and installed ipeng, suddenly I'm thinking that receivers
hidden away are actually quite good and maybe Logitech should be
pushing that more as a way to grow out of the main music room and into
the rest of the house (isn't that similar to Sonos?). If they want
hardware volumes, it's easier to sell an extra 2 or 3 players to
existing customers rather than attract new customers. The controller
was (and remains) the weakness in the Duet combo. The touch is ok but
it's not going to spread beyond 1 or 2 per house unless the price
drops. The VFD devices were my preference till I started with ipeng,
but now I'm tempted to churn my SB2's for receivers (if only I could
find them at reasonable price).

Is it me, or have Logitech meandered on strategy? Suddenly they appear
to be thinning the range down - either we are about to see the lot drop
off a cliff, or some new boxes and direction have to come after
Christmas (maybe at CES?).

The duet definitely had some growing pains. I wasn't exactly an early
adoptor and I had a lot of trouble setting it up. 6 months or so
later, my brother (much less techy than me) bought one and had no
trouble at all. So it did get better. At the time, it was really
cool. By today's standards, the display is pretty low rez and the
controller is a bit bulky, but it certainly works well. The changes
they made to the controller's UI with the 7.x releases was a big
improvement too!

It's hard to say how things would have turned out if SD was never
acquired by Logitech. I like that Logitech broadened availablity
through a large variety of retailers. I don't like that Logitech is
now struggling and the Squeezebox line isn't exactly their core
competency.

If Logitech didn't buy SD, we still would have seen the Boom - that was
probably already in flight prior to the purchase. Perhaps the duet and
radio would have been skipped and we would have jumped right to the
Touch.

I'm very glad to hear of your good experience. When I mentioned
"reliability" I didn't really mean that the hardware was failing more
often, just that the frequency of software glitches seemed to increase
with these products as compared to the earlier products. They feel
more buggy to me (I particularly loathe the Duet controller) and are
thus less "reliable" at delivering easy access to my music. A lot of
this is due to the fact that they're trying to do a bit more and thus
there are more opportunities for bugs. I should also add that I still
think these are far-and-away the best media streamers available. It's
just that a lot of the "magic" is gone compared to the slimp3 days.

jazzcat;676234 Wrote:

Agreed 100%. I still love these products passionately (and I'd really
love a return to a VFD-based lineup!).

Re: [slim] Just 5 years and a bit less than 2 month Logitech has acquired Slim Devices

2011-12-12 Thread jazzcat

As a newcomer to the SB, I knew nothing about the era of Slim Devices
before Logitech. I will say this however

I'm not "overwhelmed and frustrated by the relative complexity of the
device", nor do I find it "a little fussy". I think it works very
intuitively. The ol' jazzcat had no trouble with set-up or operation. I
never had to call Logitech for help. (I do think they should provide the
"Features Manual" in print or disc with the unit. The "quick start"
guide is too basic.)

"As the devices got less "Slim" it seems reliability went
down"while my Touch and Radio are brand new and just starting their
working lives, I don't expect them to be unreliable (and certainly not
like the Aluratek IR I had that was a short-lived, piece of garbage.)
My Touch and Radio worked right out of the box, first time, no "bugs",
no hassles. I'm proud to show these products to my friends. They are as
well-built as any thing in the marketplace.

"It's a tough product to sell to the mass-market". Maybe true,
especially when the "mass-market" has a large proportion of dumbed-down
consumers. If Logitech wants to continue selling SB's, they need to do a
lot more marketing. At the store where I bought mine, the boxes were
buried on a dusty lower shelf. The salesperson I asked for help wasn't
even sure where they were located in the store.

So, as a person who just discovered these Logitech products, I can
offer nothing but praise and thanks to the company that made them. I
hope Logitech continues to market and support the SB product line.

[slim] Best/easist way to add cover art to my existing collection?

2011-12-12 Thread NeilF

Is there an automated way to go through my hundreds of albums (help in a
folder tree structure in FLAC format) and add cover art (folder.jpg?)
into each folder?

I use Media Monkey to organise my tracks, is there a way for it
automatically fo it? If not, something else?

Thanks...

[slim] Rhapsody art and song info gets offset by 1

2011-12-12 Thread rgro

The past few weeks, I've notice that at least 50% of the time when
playing a Rhapsody playlist, the album art and song info will, at some
random point in the playlist, get exactly one song behind what's
actually playing. The music keeps playing just fine, but it's slightly
annoying to have the art and info not go with the music.

I haven't found any way to fix this other than to start the playlist
over from the first song---not particularly useful when this happens
halfway through a 6 hour playlist.

Anybody else seen this and/or have a way to deal with it?

Thanks for your answers.

I hope this is mysb related issue. Opened ticket but is not solved
yet.

Indeed I can't see my SBT on MySB.com.

I'll check my credentials once back home but I am pretty sure they are
the same at both locations. Probably someone registered to MySB from
the online shop where I bought my SBT.

I was wondering if registering both SBS and SBT to MySB was not the
cause but it seems not according to your answer. I know there is an
optional SBS plugin allowing SBT to access MySB through SBS, maybe this
would solve the issue, but is it supported by SC?

Cheers.

Re: [slim] Just 5 years and a bit less than 2 month Logitech has acquired Slim Devices

2011-12-12 Thread Soulkeeper

I agree that the Duet was a mistake. The Touch and the Radio seem to
work very well. (I've got a Duet too, and I'm satisfied with it, but
from a support perspective, it's got to be a disaster.)

Re: [slim] Just 5 years and a bit less than 2 month Logitech has acquired Slim Devices

2011-12-12 Thread azinck3

Personally I think the Touch, Radio, and Duet were all mistakes. I
consider the Boom the last of the "true" Squeezeboxen. All the
LCD-screen devices are hard to read, sluggish to operate, and introduce
a level of interface fussiness that was wonderfully missing in all the
VFD-based Squeezeboxes. Not only that, but as the devices got less
"Slim" it seems reliability went down. It's a tough product to sell to
the mass-market. It's fantastically capable, but we all know it's a
little fussy. I think it's probably been a tech support nightmare for
them. So now they're trying to market things like the Radio to the
mass-market who may not buy it because they compare it against other
internet radios which are cheaper, but even if they do buy it may then
be overwhelmed and frustrated by the relative complexity of the device
and some of the bugs that exist as a result of the software supporting
such a large and diverse ecosystem. I don't think it's sustainable.

It's hard to know what would have happened if Logitech hadn't come
along. Time and technology continues to march on, and things like
iPhones and iPads have certainly changed the landscape irreversibly.
Slim Devices may have made many of the same missteps regardless of
whether or not Logitech ever acquired them. But that said, there was a
certain "special-ness" around Slim Devices that has slowly evaporated
ever since they were acquired. This was partially the result of a
series of product introductions that were a meaningful departure from
the previous paradigm (and were, as I argue above, weaker products).
Not only that, but we all love a certain feeling of "exclusivity"; the
Slim Devices name provided that, Logitech doesn't (especially important
since a large portion of the Slim Devices fan-base consisted of
"audiophiles"). Those things, combined with the fact that the
community was now being asked to contribute code and effort back to a
huge multinational company meant that overall community enthusiasm and
developer support for the products waned.

And that's the crux of it. Aside from any individual mis-steps that
may have been made, Logitech was never set up to be able to foster the
kind of enthusiast community that drove Slim Devices to success in the
first place. They tried, and they did some things right (keeping Sean
and Dean and Andy and others on for a while) but customer service
struggled and I suspect this niche product could never drive enough
sales for them to justify the level of involvement required.

I got mine on Friday. But clicking through to the website, it shows the

And, of course, no more Boom at Logitech, which I might actually be

Re: [slim] Can't Squeezebox Server to do a re-scan

2011-12-12 Thread Stoker

Don't know whether there was just something wrong with my install or
what but when I deleted the files in the cache directory (I stopped SBS
first, deleted the contents of the cache directory and then re-started
SBS)I could no longer get the web interface to respond and my
Squeezebox couldn't connect either. I tried re-booting the server
machine as well as several re-starts all to no avail.

In the end I just un-installed SBS and installed the latest version,
and everything seems to be working now!

Cheers

Because the Touch will light up your whole bedroom with it's display. In

IMHO, of course ;)

[slim] Lost all my apps...MSB down?

Starting late yesterday afternoon I lost access to all my apps
(Rhapsody, Pandora, SiriusXM). Local music and internet radio still
plays fine. I tried logging on to MSB and the site won't open.

I'm running SMS 7.6 on MacOSX. I've cycled my players on and off and
reset my router.

Any suggestions?
