You can get two way control using this software interface. A few
VortexBox users are using it successfully with their Russound systems.

Yes, I remember that. In the entry level sessions about optimization
they always tell you you could use shouldRasterize only to later tell
you in the expert sessions that often it's not a good idea  Last
year they had almost no expert sessions, though (because they also
crammed a lot of Mac stuff into the event).

But seriously: I didn't think about that flip page animationthat it
would have such an impact. I mean: shouldRasterize is REALLY bad, it has
so many side effects, worth the effort to optimize animations without
it. In the end, not even shadows work well with it (which was the
original reason for me to get rid of it again in most cases) although
they gain a lot of performance.

Well I have a huge screen which flips to the settings page. On iPad1
even with shouldRasterize this is not always smooth. It was also
recommended to use this option in some developer videos from Apple some
year ago.

And finally: SqueezePad DID use shadows in the past, so one of the good
old screenshots:

Hehe - I heard that when you enter the settings screen and leave it
again, at least the fonts in the top left corner are rendered in high
resolution.

Normally the fonts do scale automatically - that is - if you don't use
some animation tricks I used which needs to be told to use twice the
resolution.
An update was sent to Apple on Saturday 2am for the fonts.

Everything else will be done when my iPad arrived (expected date:
today).
But I'm still at home and don't know if my wife was able to catch the
postman.

Maybe they are also some tricks in iOS for upscaling low resolution
artwork to make them somewhat look better.

Yea the guy I sold my LP's to had a business on hobby level he had
about 10ki of vinyl in his garage (he brother had areal record store
somewhere else where it all went eventually ) .

So apparently every one has bette midler "the rose" some rod stewart
ABBA (ar least in sweden ) private dancer with Tina Turner and some
Swedish stuff that "every one " had .

He basically had a list in his head of 30-40 LP he always find when
buying a collection :) .

But this modern times have loosened up what is "old" or hot and who's
actually buying it . I mean 20 years ago you could probably guess some
ones age within 5 years from looking at 50 of his LP's .

The backlog of recorded music has increased exponentially and music
industry is dying they say I have never in my life had so much to
choose from

That's definitely a closer call. My feeling is no, but it's not as
strong a feeling. Because they CD and LP version are not really the
same. If you told me you sold the vinyl, or had two copies on CD and
sold one, I'd say that's fine. I'm speaking to the ethics of the

[slim] suggestion for desktop speakers

2012-03-19 Thread Nando1970

Hi

I am considering to buy a pair of desktop speakers to replace the
Tannoy in my signature.

After having praised the active Audioengine 5(+) for year, recently
Steve Guttenberg has written a very positive review for the active
Emotiva Pro airmotiv 4

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13645_3-57367525-47/emotivas-astonishing-desktop-speaker/

I could get them for about €380, but since I don't necessarily
need active speakers I was wandering if I could get some better passive
speakers.

The passive speakers I am considering are:
- Audioengine P4, at €234 (+ €45 for DS2 Desktop Speaker
Stands)
- Wharfedale Diamond 10.2, at €310
- JohnBlue JB3, at €360.00

any opinion and/or suggestion?

My old chestnuts (LPs and CDs) are now mostly recorded and stored as
FLACs as are my wife's CDs. Having completed that project my wife now
wants her LPs in digital format. However she didn't look after her LPs
as well as I did mine, to put it mildly!

They are in invariably appalling condition - totally unrecordable. It
looks like after using them to eat her dinner off she the cleaned them
with sandpaper. So I have no choice but to replace with CDs or
downloads.

As they are also "old people's chestnuts" too, I could probably
download them all free if I wanted to. However I am a law abiding
citizen and will probably just pick them up as second hand CDs where I
can.

If you open the web interface and goto Settings/Information, you will

Generally it shouldn't matter if you have Squeezebox Server/Logitech
Media Server on a NAS or computer, I'm running it on a computer and for

I just guessed that it might be the reason you didn't use it... I wrote

Generally SqueezePad looks OK on iPad 3, except for some reason the
fonts are not scaled which I thought iOS did automatically.

I've noticed a problem with our own app that will probably affect
everyone, and that is that the ultra-high-res cover art really abuses
the server and can cause large amounts of memory to be used upscaling
artwork to sizes around 1500px or higher. We will need to make some
changes to avoid any upscaling and have this scaling done client-side.

The only issue I have noticed so far is the main menu fonts on the left
side menu look a little bit pixelated, probably due to the upscaling of
the fonts for the higher resolution display. Low resolution artwork
(400x400) also looks pretty bad due to the upscaling. Looks like I
will have to start looking for higher resoultion cover art !

it may be worth the time and effort to sell a complete collection , not
one disc at the time .

On the other hand your not going to get much . Popular selections are
available free online .

Not so popular "old peoples music" :) is often sold whole sale when
someone dies and it is often the same old chestnuts from everyone so
also low in price.

I sold my complete LP collection I did not get much for it , in
hindsight I should have kept it even if I don't use it.

I keep my CD's as collectibles

I've been pondering this very question myself. What would make sense to
me (although probably not the RIAA) is:

You should be able to legally download a digital version of the same
physical version that you already own, i.e. a rip of the vinyl if you
own the vinyl. You have in fact already paid the performer, the
songwriter, etc. for their work. In that scenario, the person who did
the rip is merely saving you the time of ripping it yourself.

However, that download would have to be through a method that is NOT
peer-to-peer file sharing, because peer-to-peer means that you'd be
re-sharing it with others who do not necessarily have any rights to
possess the music.

If the version you download is a remaster, i.e. a different master than
the one you own, payment for the work of the remastering engineer is the
missing piece. As far as I know, remastering engineers do not get paid a
royalty per copy, just a flat fee for doing the job. So the loss of
revenue for the engineer would be indirect rather than direct, and the
record company would be more reluctant to produce and offer remasters
in the future.

I saw in the iPhone app when you scan by using "browse folder" to find
new stuff this is or was never added to the new music list on the

That is no different from just buying the CD and then selling it
without ever having ripped it, which is perfectly legal.

You don't own the music, you own the carrier. The point of all this
legislation is to prevent people from listening to music without
royalties going to the record company, musician and their
representatives.

In the UK in the past it was technically illegal to make a copy of an
LP on cassette tape. However recently it was made legal to rip a CD for
personal use on a portable player. This was a concession to the fact
that one person is unlikely to want to listen to the CD and MP3 rip
simultaneously.

However you are (technically) in breach of this if you have a copy on
your portable player AND a copy on a server to be played on a
Squeezebox which could be listened to by others while you are listening
to the same recording on your iPod somewhere else.

Is it legal to own a ripped copy of an album having sold the original
carrier? The answer in most jurisdictions is no, this is because you
are essentially allowing one recording to be used by two people at the
same time and (crucially) in different places with only one of them
having paid a royalty.

This is something that could be propagated ad infinitum if each new
owner of a CD rips it and sells it on. Theoretically one CD sale, and
one royalty payment to the musician, could result in numerous ripped
copies of the music.

In practice the "buy CD, rip it, sell CD" strategy is unlikely to lead
you to be prosecuted unless you make a business out of it in some way.
At best this strategy will just reduce the cost of ownership as few
CDs, if any, will be sold at a profit.

To sell a CD you would be paying for:
- ebay listing
- packaging
- postage
In the UK that lot will cost you around £2.50.

The worst is that in order to guarantee a sale you would probably need
to significantly under-cut the "market" price, otherwise a recording
might not sell and you would need to re-list it at further cost.

You might consider this worthwhile for a rare and expensive recording.
But as decent second hand copies of most CDs can be bought for £3-£5
few would find it worth the time and aggravation.

Server version 7.7.2 latest nightly. I will try a complete rescan but
it is something I try to avoid on a Goflex Net because it takes hours.
Just seems strange that all my devices see the Artist but not the

I have a CAV6.6 house amp. At one point I set up IR for control but now
just my phone's app for control. It's on my list but since the 6.6 is
no longer being made, I pushed it to the bottom of the list.

Re: [slim] Android Controller App

I've just added a new artist to my library and it does not appear in the
Artist list under My Music when using the App. It appears on my
Radio,Touch and Controller and also in the web UI but not on my phone.
If I search for the artist the app can find it and display albums by
the artist. I don't know if this is new behaviour for the latest update
of the app or if any other Artists are missing, I only noticed it when I
was checking that the "new and changed" scan had completed correctly.
Has anyone else noticed this problem?

[slim] Android tablet app for logitech boom

2012-03-19 Thread bj999

Hi,

For 2 weeks now I have the Asus Transformer Prime Tablet (android).
I’d like to use it to manage my different Logitech players: boom, duet
and WLAN radio.
I found an android app in googles play/app store. When I installed it I
had an issue that my duet + controller did not work anymore and my
squeezecenter software on my NAS (ReadyNAS) stopped working.
I’m not sure if that happened by coincidence.

The android app asked me for my mySqueezbox.com user/password. Usually,
I do not use mySqueezebox but the Logitech server on my NAS.

Question:
. can I use the Logitech android app to manage my players with my NAS
only?
. may there be another Logitech android app to steer my players similar
to the “SqueezePlay” software?

Thanks for any guidance.
Cheers, bj.
