Hi Erland -

I do use static playlists but I don't listen to them much anymore since
I discovered your Dynamic and SQL Playlist plugins (and when I do play
them I play them with the Dynamic Plugin). They've changed how I listen
to my music. What would make Dynamic Playlists unbeatable would be if I
could do an "add" to a DP that I had currently playing. Let's say that I
had searched for and was dynamically playing say The Who but then that
gave me the urge for say Led Zep. I'd like to be able to search and
optionally add to (not replace) the existing Dynamic playlist. Of
course, this would work the exact same way as described if I had started
with a genre and wanted to add in another genre. Now that would be
awesome.

Thanks for asking -
Tom

[slim] Volume control number changes, volume does not.

2012-04-30 Thread PDXMike

Hello

New to the community. I have three SQ3s v3 linked to a vortexbox-based
server. Two are wireless, one is wired only.

I've recently moved my wired SQ3 to a new location and hooked up some
headphones to it. It had previously been feeding a preamp as a line
level input, so I had the volume set on max. When I tried it with the
headphones, I found that the remote volume controls changes the volume
setting on the player, but the actual volume stays the same. In other
words, the apparent volume setting displayed will change up and down
from muted to 100 and will stay at whatever setting I choose, but the
actual volume remains the same - loud.

Does this sound like a hardware failure, some mysterious setting I don't
know about, or ??? The remote works fine with my other players, so I'm
pretty sure it's the player.

The other thing I've noticed is that every time I log in and out of
mysqueezebox.com it updates the firmware. Is that normal behavior?

THX in advance for any feedback

BTW, I really love my SQ3s with the vortexbox server. Even my wife can
figure out how to use it ;)

You to make sure I understand you.

Are you saying that you create multiple playlist files ?
Or are you saying that you duplicate and rename music files so you have
multiple copies of the same file in different folders in the music
folder ?

I completely agree, if they have limited resources they really need to
put some focus on making it easy for third party developers to enhance
the product and so they can do everything Logitech doesn't have
resources to do themselves. The issue is more widespread than just the
Jive interface, it's a general API issue where offering a third party
API often isn't a priority. However, to give them some credit, they have
done some things on the server side with the "onebrowser" API and new
scanner API introduced in 7.6 which was a step in the right direction
for third party add-ons.

I have over a hundred static playlists in my library.

I listen mostly to classical music. When I rip music, I 'dismantle' the
CD contents and store each piece in a separate folder that contains all
the movements for that piece played by that performer. I then store
these folders sorted first by composer, then by type of piece [sonatas,
concertos, symphonies, etc], then by specific piece, finally by specific
performance. Some folders have multiple subfolders [an opera with each
act] some have 30 or more tracks, some have only one track. Thus when
I use the Squeezebox, I never select individual tracks but only folders.

For my favorite CDs, I sometimes create a static playlist that
're-assembles' the CD by including all the pieces from the CD in their
original order. Most of my static playlists are of this sort, and I
never change them. But sometimes I assemble a 'concert' for an evening
by including the performances I want in the order I want, and this
becomes a static playlist. Some of these I keep for long periods, some
only for a few months, some get changed occcasionally by adding new
pieces or including a different performer.

In answer to your question, the key problem with pushing forward
development of "the experience" is the pitiful lack of opening up the
Jive interface to Third party developers. Simple stuff like putting a
dynamic button on the now playing screen and when pressed run some
plugin code, all the new stuff that makes the Touch interesting is all
closed shop.

Without any movement on feature requests like;
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15067
(Requested in 2009!) development is stuck in the "classic" world.

A few years back there were dozens of developers and now you can count
the number of active developers on one hand. You see comments in the
Dev forums that they have no interest in feature enhancements unless
they have 1+ votes, so hence the few dev votes will never get
anything implemented to make life easier and throw out new ideas,
inspire new devs and so forth.

In my opinion Logitech have lost direction and just to top it off, it
looks like they are on yet another rebranding exercise to change the
product name again... geez keep up the good work guys :s

1. Any of those listed are fine, but a computer or tablet would be
preferred.
2. Automatically select 100 tracks that match some criteria, including
something like MIP's/Spicefly Sugar Cube's music-type (ie, something
more "musical" than user-supplied genres, ratings, last-played, etc).
And it has to be easy to edit after the initial playlist is generated.
3. Initially as generated by MIP/Spicefly - like program (or even not
nearly as good, such as Apple Genius), then drag-and-drop tracks to
re-order
4. That it's too hard to reorder tracks in existing playlists
5. Computer, tablet, or smartphone
6. All of the above. The most important is removing tracks, followed by
reordering and adding.

1. Probably around 50. Almost all of them were initially created with
MIP or SQL/Dynamic Playlists, then lightly edited (remove the inevitable
tracks that don't fit, maybe change the ordering a little), and saved.
2. I usually make them for a party or event, but don't delete them
afterwards. There are only a few that I've played a 2nd or 3rd time (or
more), but I'm a pack-rat so I don't delete them.
3. It is rare for me to go back and change a playlist.
4. Just one example that I made a few weeks ago and then replayed last
night when we had some people over for dinner on the deck outside. It
was a MIP-generated list that used "Soukoura" (Ali Farka Touré and Ry
Cooder) as the "seed track". If I think about I'll post the playlist
later when I'm home. Would mostly use as background music when
entertaining.

I agree with improving the touch's USB and SD card slot. I have problems
with the scanning and trying to use the internal server. You should be
able to copy folders from the LMS server computer to an SD card and it
should work without waiting forever for the scan to complete.

Whitebear provides a UPnP/DLNA open system front end to LMS/SBS
proprietary back end. And yes, of course Whitebear talks to LMS/SBS (it
uses the "CLI" interface)

The Squeezeboxes are independent devices on the network. The Control
Point sends UPnP/DLNA player commands to Whitebear, which in turn sends
CLI commands to LMS/SBS, which in turn sends low level proprietray
commands to the players. If the command is "play this Url" then the
Squeezebox may contact the remote server and download and play that
track.

NogNeetMachinaal wrote:

Unfortunately the UPnP/DLNA standard has no functionality for
synchronised playing. (Except trivially the Control Point can send the
same Play To command to more than one player...)

Yes. Although UPnP advertisements are sent on all interfaces and there
is no function to disable that. And UPnP/DLNA transcoding works by the
server (Whitebear) "offerring" multiple formats, and the client
selecting its preferred choice from those offers; so the configuration
just determines which formats are offerred in which order.

About the only thing that might be of interest to me is a Touch 2.
Something with a bit bigger screen, maybe a bit more robust at being
it's own server, and the ability to display on a TV or monitor. The way
I think it could make great strides for the simplification of use, is a
self contained system that one could just plug in a USB drive and be up
and going. Granted it should be open enough that tweakers or people
that want more options could expand upon. But it seems that some that
I've talked to get intimidated and confused by the whole separate server
idea and are just used to how easy it is to just play stuff from
iTunes/pods. So that's my suggestion, a robust self contained system
that could be pretty plug and play.

Everything reasonable is in the pipeline, it's just a matter of when. I
don't think I will need to directly support those plugins, but when we
have context menu on the now playing screen they should "just work" to

Re: [slim] What is missing from your Squeezebox experience ?

2012-04-30 Thread sherington

The most annoying thing - and this not unique to Sqeezebox in any way -
is that iTunes beats it hands-down in the creation and use of playlists.
The Squeezebox implementation is based on the assumption, I assume, that
Squeezebox users don't really need such a simple interface - they can
cope with more technical methods.

IMHO this is the one single thing that iTunes does really well, and
should be emulated asap. Without this really quite simple approach, the
system will forever be tagged with the "only useable by techies & nerds"
label and sales will be hugely restricted for ever. And on that note,
the "techies & nerds" (of which I am one - been in IT since c1975)
should not come back and say this is daft - I know how to create and
deploy playlists, but stand someone in front of your SB/Touch or
whatever and tell them to create and deploy a playlist & they simply
cannot do it without detailed instructions and detailed explanations.
Not good enough - I have only ever come across one relatively elderly
person who could not immediately suss it out on iTunes/iPod etc etc but
they all have one. My 85yr old Pa uses his squeezebox daily because I
have set up his playlists for him. He should have been able to do it
himself. My wife cannot do it & my 15yr old daughter claims not to have
the time to investigate.

I ONLY use iTunes for setting up & feeding the one iPod in the house
that Rockbox doesn't support & generally hate it since it comes with so
much Apple FUD, arrogance & "stuff" that I really don't want or need
(like the iTunes store), but the playlist execution is the one critical
thing that made it universally useable by the masses pre-the iTunes
store.

I prefer to manage the favorites in LMS (because the search function is

The scenario I am envisaging is the typical party: people come over,
drink, get bored of your finely selected music and then say, let me DJ
for a while. They basically have a stock iPhone. If I were in the Apple
ecosystem, I'd just have an Apple router plugged into my stereo. It's
not for me as the SB owner, since I use IPeng.

My situation is that I have a couple of laptops, which are not always at
home (and are not always on), but which have some music which is not on
the main server (at least yet). But I sometimes want to be able to play
the music off the said laptop. I don't want to run anything extra on the
laptops (I guess it's ok if there is a DLNA media library being served
by them). Currently (since it's a Windows network) all the music is
accessible to every other machine as part of the Homegroup, so file
sharing between the server and these machines is enabled. It would be
nice to be able to somehow easily play that music, even if it did
require a scan at some point before, but not every time the machine is
connected (and it's ok if the library is then somewhat out of date).

I think I would actually prefer to drill down to the music on the
laptops separately, rather than have everything integrated together, or
at least to ahve that option. More importantly, the music should not be
listed in the SB menus if the laptops are not on the network.

An example from yesterday. I ripped the "More Moondog" CD published by
WEA France in 1991. I had one of the CD databases return 1991 as the
release date. For me this is wrong. Release info is Prestige 1956,
remastered 1991. Further, this CD is a (hidden) combo: LP "The Story of
Moondog", Prestige 1957 has sneaked in as "bonus tracks" on this CD.
So with the help of discogs I have split the CD in 2, set the
appropriate dates, and grabbed the original LP artwork (google image
helps here, too)

My tags are not in a mess. The music industry was: CDs were expected to
hold 60 minutes of music, so we end up with many nondescript
compilations, combos, or CDs where there are more "bonus tracks" than
there were tracks on the original recording.
With the SB we are in the digital realm so I can fix this kind of
situation, and finally understand what I am listening to.

Another recent example. Miles Davis' soundtrack "Ascenseur pour
l'échafaud" on CD includes a ton of studio alternate takes, following
each master take. Listening to this CD was a bizarre experience… Finally
I compared the original LP tracklist and the CD reissue's, split the
files in 2, as "original LP" + "bonus studio takes". And for the first
time I could enjoy the LP thoroughly.

Resolved: This fixed the issue. Not sure how it occurred in the first
place though. Maybe there is a loose contact in one of my RCAs going
from the DAC to preamp? I have swapped the RCA for my SACD player with
the one on the DAC (same brand/type) and I'll see how everything goes.

Thanks all for a great forum and fantastic support (as usual).

At a basic level, the LMS/SBS DLNA plug-in does the same thing as
Whitebear; but IMHO the plug-in is not compatible with some Control
Points and Renderers, and it lacks features too. But if the LMS/SBS DLNA
plug-in works for you please use it; whereas if it doesn't, disable the
plug-in and use Whitebear instead.

To my knowledge, LMS is DLNA compliant. Right?
Suppose I would have a TV that is also DLNA compliant and is equiped
with control point software, than the combi (LMS & TV) would bring me
browsing and playing sound and video. Right?
With this use-case scenario in mind and assuming that I'm overlooking
something: what is the value of Whitebear?

well just to be clear, what i proposed COULD be used by server, as its
output dir could be scanned by server, (since you can tell server where
to look for playlists). so, i guess i don't know why its better to do
in server? i don't think anything good can be done in server.

i don't know what u mean when u say "upnp media managers" but i would
suggest a simple scanner that works off whatever tags it finds, one file
per row.

i think i laid out what i'm looking for pretty extensively, so those are
my needs. i hope thats useful to you.

Completely agree, but it needs to be tied to some kind of media manager
which can provide lists of available tracks, albums and artists. If you
don't tie it to a media manager you will have to implement a scanner
yourself in the app. Implementing an internal scanner is certainly one
way to do it, I just fear that it will result in a lot more work than
basing it on a media manager that exists already. UPnP media managers is
certainly a solution but their issue is that there seems to be a lot of
incompatibilities between different UPnP media servers so you can't
really be sure it works with all just because you have tested it with
one specific.

My personal intention, if I would do something, would be to try to
improve the situation for people that like to use Squeezebox devices,
there are plenty of other developers and forums in the world that focus
on non Squeezebox users, so let's focus on the users that want to use
Squeezeboxes in this forum.

However, at the moment, I'm more interested in what the actual needs are
instead of discussing if it's suitable to develop as a plugin or not.
After we know the needs, it's possible to decide exactly how it's best
to implement it.

i don't think what i proposed could be done in server, nor do i think
people who don't use server want to install it just to use such an app.

sometimes folks here need to remember, most people don't own squeeze
anything. i think an app like this does not need to be tied to server.

i think the server UI sucks for just about anything. but my point was
that if you are going to do something, do something that could work for
any app, not just server. thats far more useful. to me playlists are
mainly about what is or is not in them. order is a secondary concern,
since any decent app can randomize a playlist. if a static order needs
to be maintained, a proposed app should respect that, but leave that
setting of the order to other apps to do, just respect it when done.

The reason I started this thread was to investigate what would be needed
to make something that works good for Squeezebox.
I don't really use static playlists myself much, so I need information
from people that actually use them to better understand the needs.
Personally I mostly use smart playlists (through SQL Playlist/Dynamic
Playlist) as I like to focus on listening to music rather than spending
the time maintaining playlists, but I could see scenarios, like parties
or special events, where the exact tracks and order of them could be
important and due to this static playlists would be needed.

Still, I'm skeptical if it's possible to implement it as a plugin as I
think it requires a rich user interface to really work and I'm not sure
the SBS/LMS web interface is suitable for this kind of usage.

These are features which should be in LMS [next] and/or Squeezebox
[next], I think. It would allow visitors to play something from their
iThingy the've brought with them on my system directly, without complex
reconfiguring/rescanning. It als would allow me to send audio from my

I'm just asking because AirPlay is a bit tricky from a legal standpoint
unless you like to pay license fees to Apple, so if we know exactly
which apps you are looking for support in there might be other solutions
that are easier to accomplish that fulfills the need.

Are we talking about computers where SBS/LMS can't be installed ?
In that case, do you have any preference how the library should be made
availablable ?
Are we talking about
* iTunes libraries
* machines which expose a network disk on the network
* machines which have a UPnP server installed ?
(Which would be most important for you personally)

Today, you can install SBS/LMS on the temporary machine and just switch
on the Squeezebox which SBS/LMS it is connected to, but I suspect you
are looking for a solution that doesn't require you to switch SBS/LMS on
the Squeezebox ?

Do you want to browse these temporary library separately or are you
expecting them to be fully integrated in the standard browse menus so
its albums appear in the same list as the albums from the permanent
library ?

Finally, what kind of temporary machines are we talking about ?
Computers within the family or something else ?
Is the need to easily be able to access, browse and play music on all
laptop's within the family that are currently connected to the network ?

Re: [slim] How do you want to create/manage playlists ?

2012-04-30 Thread MrSinatra

Erland,

this is awesome. for years i haven't used playlists b/c no one makes an
app that makes playlists the way i want. the closest thing for me is
"smartviews" in winamp, but thats not perfect or suited really for
specific purposes or occassions. smartviews are more of a library
manager.

as a former radio dj, i have long fantasized over what a perfect
playlist app would be.

erland wrote:

i'd use a computer.

> criteria (genre, ratings, ...)
> - Something else

i think the app would need to scan the music to catalog it for
manipulation. this assumes a user already has good tags.

smartviews let me use criteria. what i would want is basically a graph
paper like grid, kinda like a spread sheet. on the left would be album
artists, then indented just a tad would be album names, then indented
just a tad more would be track titles. so like this:

Beatles
_Help
__Ticket to ride
__Yesterday
_Abbey Road
__Here comes the Sun
Cars
_Candy O
__Dangerous Type

and so on...

then, on the right would be a series of columns, with empty checkboxes.
one column per named playlist. so if u have 11 columns, u have 11
playlists. then, if u put a check in the songtitle row for that column,
the playlist is automatically rewritten to include it, and vice versa.
if you put it on the album row, all the titles on the album are
included. and on the albumartists row, all the titles on all albums are
included. also, a "special" column should exist that if you checked the
row in that column, it adds that to ALL playlists.

in addition, on a per column basis, i should then be able to specify
whatever criteria. so i could say "any new music in this file path or
subfolder should automatically be checked" or "any new music with this
genre should automatically be checked" etc.

each column would have its own unique color and the playlist names would
be listed in a fixed row at the top (like in excel, so u can see em even
when scrolling) where they bend kind of, like at an angle, think 2
o'clock, to read.

this is not important to me as i would simply load and then randomize my
playlists. however, if people wanted to play things in a strict order,
then an option in this playlist creating app would be to not overwrite
the order the playlist is in. that way, i could use this proposed app
to create and select the songs, load them into winamp in AA, album,
track # order, rearrange them in winamp, save in winamp, and then the
proposed app would respect that ordering, but still allow to add or
remove items.

i almost always use the SBS random mix functions. anything else with

to me, its all about adding or deleting tracks from a playlist, and or
automating a playlist. i can envision columns where a playlist is made
based on last access date, or rating, or combos of criterias, like
smartviews, but its
