Re: [slim] Now the Squeezebox is dead, what would your next system be? And why?
Well for me the question is not 'what will your next system be' but 'what will your first system be'? I had been planning on setting up a system with a couple of Squeezebox Touches, and getting a secondhand Mac Mini to run LMS on. That's after previously considering a Sonos setup but disliking the price and the lack of UI on the Sonos kit. Now I'm wondering about either: - Airport Expresses instead of the Squeezebox Touches, and one or two iPod touches with the Apple Remote app to control playback from iTunes on the Mini or - iPod touches running iPeng and sitting more-or-less permanently in docks, playing from LMS on the Mini Right now there are refurb iPod Touches on the UK Apple Store for £129, so the combo of Airport Express + iPod, or iPod + (say) Pure i20 dock, is about the same price as the Squeezebox Touch. Im not bothered about online streaming services except iPlayer, and I can do that with the app on the iPod. My music library is going to be in ALAC and I'm not worried about anything other than 16/44.1kHz files. I can see pluses and minuses to both my options above compared to the Squeezebox Touch plan, but how will they compare for synchronisation, and is the quality of the Airport Express audio out significantly worse than the Squeezebox Touch? nekomatic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=57325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96191 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] The Squeezebox Classic firmware 134 or 137
Hello, I'm currently running Squeezebox Server Version 7.5.6 and have 2 SB Radios, a Boom and a Squeezebox Classic connected to it. The Squeezebox Classic in on firmware 134, and when I connected it to MySqueezebox.com it was upgraded to firmware 137. Does anyone know the changes between firmware 134 and 137 and whether it is safe to run firmware 137 with Server 7.5.6? Thanks in advance. nmizel's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=997 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96480 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] The Squeezebox Classic firmware 134 or 137
I think it's just one firmware revision between 134 (LMS 7.5.6) and 137 (LMS 7.6.0, which came right after your 7.5.6). Likely just the new Rhapsody change is about all that is different between the two. But you will now be bugged to update/downgrade every time you switch servers (LMS and MySB). Why not just update to the latest LMS 7.7.2 and avoid the annoyance of update/downgrade? Or, don't switch to MySB? toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96480 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

This is the most official I've found: http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Squeezebox-Players/Logitech-UE-Smart-Radio/td-p/884530 Doesn't really say much except for that they plan to continue supporting Squeezeboxes and continue making it provide you access to a rich world of music. If you read between the lines one interpretation which matches what mherger has said is that they don't have any plans to shutdown mysqueezebox.com in the near future. My personal interpretation is that there isn't any need to worry for the next year or two while significant amount of devices are still under warranty period. I don't think it's likely that mysqueezebox.com will be running 2020 and still be compatible with the firmware in a Squeezebox Classic, but that's just my very personal guess. Regarding Squeezebox, there wasn't any official announcement before the shutdown, but honestly people have been talking about Logitech shutting down Squeezebox for the last 1-2 years on this forum, so even if it came as a surprise I think it's something we have all feared for quite some time. erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96371 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] A Perl question
I want to write a daemon that launches long-lived processes (it's a backup robot.) I can't have the daemon stand there waiting on the children, backgrounding the system processes is necessary. The background processes have an unfortunate tendency to lock-up. So the daemon needs to be able to check on progress, kill hung tasks and hopefully rollback#8230; I started using non-blocking fork/exec and reaping zombies with SIG CHILD. I don't seem to be able to add SIG ALRM to the mix (I tried w/ alarm and ualarm), because some of my code currently uses sleep(). Since I might like a good sleep from time to time, I started looking at Proc::Background and it seems to offer a solution. Cleaner than a fork/exec sub, easy to get status from the objects so I could poll them instead of using alarms. (Performance is not an issue, reliability is.) So this is my question: what would you use to perform something similar to fork/exec, with timeout/kill handling ? (The final code will run in a Net:: Daemon loop, FWIW) Thanks for any hint! epoch1970's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16711 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96486 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I've never used CUETools, so I'm not sure what options it gives you for processing batches of files. I'd install it and give it a try. Your SB's detect the track titles because Logitech Media Server (LMS) can use and read cuesheets. Cuesheets provide metadata so a player knows which tracks exist at which spots in the single large file you have for each album. Your phone doesn't understand that format; it requires that each track be its own file. azinck3's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3967 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96483 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

For future ripping I sugests dBpower amp ( or a correctly configured EAC that don't give cue + one large file while ripping ). What format are you ripping to,with WMP ? WAV mp3 wma ? WMP does not rip to FLAC and is not a secure ripper . And WMP's WAV rips do not have any file tags ,so for using with squeezeboxes they migth be cumbersome ( not showing up under artist or album and not be searchable ). Suppose if you are ripping to mp3 or wma you get proper tags . You old cue + one big file rips what are they FLAC or mp3 .
