Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox Replacement - Would you be interested?

2013-02-14 Thread dustinsterk

This looks doable, normally the I2S and S/PDIF signals are referenced to
an internal PLL, but there is a register that bypasses the PLL with a
clock from an external pin. There are two of these external clocks, one
of which connects to the EDM connecttor. On the wand carrier board that
clock is not connected to anything so it looks like we can use it to
feed in the external oscilator clock.

The only problem with this is that it is not clear where the bypass
happens, it's not shown in the block diagram. It could either be a
bypass of just the PLL, in which case we need to set the PLL dividers to
1 (normally the PLL runs at 630MHz), OR it might be injected after the
dividers, in which case we don't care about the divider values.

We still need a pin to control the external clock mux. There is nothing
specific for this in the audio subsystem, it is going to have to a GPIO,
of which there are plenty. I just have to choose one which is active in
the IO mux mode we will be running in. (of which I don't know yet). This
is the one unclear issue preventing me from starting a board layout
right now. I think I can figure this out from finding a specific
signal that IS being used, find out what pin its physically on and then
determine which IO mux mode has to be in play for that function to be on
the pin. With the mux mode I can then choose a GPIO that is active in
 that mode.

In any case it looks like there is a way to get an external clock into
the chip and it is on the EDM connector. So I think the wandboard is
good to go as a base hardware platform.

Hey John,
Any update with things? I have been checking the Wandboard forums
everyday but have not seem who the US distributor will be. I will be
purchasing one of these as soon as this is released.

Thanks!

I like the look of it and had a bit of a read. It's pricey and I think
it might be flawed. In the bumph I read it talked about a single optical
connection to TV and nothing about HDMI which means you are going to be
reliant on your TV passing digital sound out from connected devices eg
Satelitte box, blu-ray etc. That's not a common feature is it? Or have I
misread the bumph I have seen?

Interesting... I'm sure one of its selling points was that you could
play music even when your TV is off. I'm not sure how that would work
even *if* you have a TV with digital passthrough.

Re: [slim] Sonos PlayBar...

2013-02-14 Thread d6jg

It can play music with TV off - that is not in doubt.
They say that to get sound from the TV (and connected devices) you just
need one optical connection. That implies that TVs have digital
passthrough and doesn't have one of those asterix that point to small
print that says if your TV supports it.
My bedroom HD TV doesn't even have an optical out only a coax digital
out.
Is it normal for current TVs to have digital audio passthrough?

Guessing with TV off it has WiFi all by itself for Sonos playback. Like
their Sonos speaker boxes.

Why would you need HDMI out from TV? All you will get from TV audio is
2ch and (at best) 5.1ch digital lossy audio. The bar is to be used in
place of a full surround and/or to boost the TV's weak speakers. Though
you could still do full surround from a source (like sat/cable box) to
an AVR when you wanted it.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Squeezeslave: 1.2 released

2013-02-14 Thread Octootje

On OSX I am trying to avoid the -o option because sometimes I have
devices plugged in, and sometimes not. Of course my USB soundcard is
always present.

However the -n option doesn't work. It defaults to the built-in output.

$ ./squeezeslave -L Generic USB Audio Device
Output devices:
* 2: (Core Audio) Built-in Output (3/13)
3: (Core Audio) HDMI (1/3)
4: (Core Audio) Generic USB Audio Device(2/13)

$ ./squeezeslave -h
squeezeslave 1.3-390 Dec 28 2012 15:32:43
compile flags: osx portaudio:1885 debug signals interactive daemon
renice zones
buffer sizes: decoder 2097152 output 2822400 bytes

I tried to specify the device name in several ways, including all
lowercase and also Generic\ USB\ Audio\ Device to no avail. It still
doesn't match.
It doesn't look like it supports substrings either.
Any suggestions?

Re: [slim] Sonos PlayBar...

2013-02-14 Thread d6jg

Read the specs here
http://www.sonos.com/shop/products/playbar
It will stream music via wi fi like any other Sonos and is also designed
to upgrade the audio of an HD TV via an optical cable.
The blurb then goes on to say that with the one connection to the TV it
will play the audio from a Sat box (or similar) connected to your TV.
How?
My recent Samsung Smart TV doesn't output external source analogue sound
through its optical out.

[slim] Puzzled about iPlayer problem

2013-02-14 Thread steve4586

My SB3 has not been working for some BBC stations for listen again.
Radio4, Radio4Extra and 6Music only show empty when trying to browse
programs. Listen live works ok on all stations. I've checked the xml
from the BBC and radio 4 looks ok. As my Touch is working fine with
iPlayer for these (all) stations, this is looking like an SB3 problem.

I am running 7.7.2 (just upgraded), updated the firmware on both the SB3
and Touch and did a factory reset on the SB3. I've tried to remove the
iPlayer app from the SB3, but there is no option for this - it doesn't
appear in the App Gallery to uninstall and then reinstall.

Any help with this would be very appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

For SB3 you need the BBCiPlayer plugin on your LMS. So you need to look
at the Settings/plugin page on your LMS web interface.

What version of the BBCiPlayer plugin have you installed ?

Just checked and its working fine for me - SB3 and 7.7.2. The iplayer
app is installed on LMS not the SB3 - not sure if it can be separately
installed on a Touch. Mine only looks at LMS and doesn't use the built

Re: [slim] No competition for Sonos! :-(

2013-02-14 Thread Squeezemenicely

I bought a Sonos connect to test the system - and see if I should change
over to them.

I must admit I really like it. Even with Squeezeplug, my SB system
sometimes drove me nuts, being slow and unresponsive. Troubles with the
server.

In a perfect world Sonos would not have the 65k limit, but I guess I can
work around it.

The Sonos is just so stable and fast. Also at the moment I can get very
good money for my SBs, which would make the migration easy. I just do
not want to loose my investment and Sonos looks like it he to stay.

The apps are great, even if not as cool as iPeng, but maybe there will
be an iSonos app someday.

I want to get more streamers and buying more SBs just does not feel
right at the moment.

Still got time to test, but it looks like Sonos finally got me...

I wouldn't count on getting a lot of third party apps for Sonos, they
are really closed regarding these kind of things.

There is the http://sonopad.com/ app from bluegaspode which could be an
option if you like SqueezePad for Squeezebox, but except for this I
suspect you will have to rely on whatever app Sonos provides
themselves.

I think Sonos can be great, but you have to accept that you are limited
to the functionality Sonos provides themselves, they don't have the
third party development community and never will unless they completely
change how they interact with third party developers.

So, if you just want something stable, Sonos is probably a good choice,
if you want something that continuously offers you new way to explore
the music you want to wait and see what the market comes up with during
the next year or so. Someone is likely going to try to fill parts of the
hole Logitech has left behind, there are too many customers who are
willing to pay for functionality in this market segment for it to just
disappear.

I'm in the middle of my incredibly busy week right now, so I have not
been able to do anything recently. Monday is a holiday so i can probably
start putting together the layout of the Gen0.5 board.

The size of the module is going to dictate the size of the board, there
is going to be a lot of empty space on Gen0.5. Gen1 gets more
interesting, more stuff and it has to be the carrier for both the
wandboard module and the wifi module. Its kind of looking like a 4x3
inch board now.
