It was not overpriced. It is worth every penny. Design, build quality,
components, and sound quality all top. So the price is OK.

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?

2015-10-09 Thread CommanderROR

That's actually a perfect plan!!!

I just set up Squeeze2Upnp, and it works perfectly with my AMP, meaning
I son't need the Pi in the lounge anymore...if it works with the
Chromecast Audio as well, then that means I can keep LMS, but still use
the Chromecast devices to stream from LMS (webradio and Qobuz for
example) and still cast from Chrome or Android with apps like "Play
Music". This is pretty much
perfect!
The Squeeze2Upnp Plugin was something I always ignored so far since I
saw little advantage in using it, now I know better. I handles HighRes
streams from Qobuz fine btw., so no trouble there either.

Is the Chromecast Audio fully compatible with DLNA! Or does it need some
workarounds or anything?

Funny that. I've never had any reliability problems with any version of
SlimServer/SqueezeCenter/LMS. I've run various incarnations on FreeBSD,
Win2000, Ubuntu and Fedora. It always just worked. So I can't understand
where you get your idea of "rickety" from.

Or perhaps you're speaking in terms of the development and support
effort required. I guess that's possible, but I don't have any inside
knowledge of what their software guys had to deal with.

Seems to me that what Logitech actually did was see that there might be
money to be made from the streaming audio market, and so took a punt on
buying a semi-mature technology to try and enter that marketplace. It
only cost what for them was petty cash.

Unfortunately they never understood the Slim Devices vision so had no
idea where to take things. Everyone seems to think that in hardware
terms the Touch was the crowning glory, but it was the beginning of the
end - a "non-slim Slim Device", as it were. By trying to put some of the
intelligence into the player, they completely missed the point of how
the ecosystem was supposed to work. Luckily for customers who did
understand the system, they could ignore the cut-down server they tried
to put on the Touch and just use it as a player. But it was presented to
the mass market as an all-in-one solution, and that just didn't work.

What Logitech should have done is release some sort of LMS appliance so
they could sell a turnkey server and stick with genuinely slim players.
If they couldn't even figure out how to do that, they could have bought
Vortexbox for much less than they paid for Slim Devices.

Perhaps something would still be alive, but it wouldn't be much like the
Squeezebox system we know and love.

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?

2015-10-09 Thread poing

Chromecast Audio has a nice price, presumably because Google is setting
the price based on a mixed calculation (you don't just generate revenue
by purchasing the hardware, but also by using more Google services).

IMO, the way to exploit the cheap hardware is by hacking it. Google
Cast's strength is it's polish and ease-of-use. But I presume it lacks
many of the advanced features I like about the Squeeze ecosystem.

Does the Chromecast Audio, when used in conjunction with Squeeze2Upnp,
support (i) tight synchronization, (ii) ReplayGain, (iii) gapless
playback, etc.? If it doesn't, I don't find the device all that
exciting.

Although, you know what would be really cool? Squeezelite running on a
rooted Chromecast Audio!

Unlikely since users have not been able to root existing Chromecasts
with recent firmware. It seems only Chromecast with old not-upadted

i could use a touch for the same purpose, but the transporter looks so

average seems about right, and it sounds fabulous via its analog outputs

I really hope it's possible to do that. Google just confirmed that you

If it is possible though, it would make installing Players for LMS a

AFAICT Chromecast doe not run Linux they run a version of ChromeOS so
there is a no SDK. This make would make it difficult to port
Squeezelite. The other choice would require somebody to port Linux to
Chromecast hardware - another non trivial task when there is no
documentation on the h/w.

If Chromecast could be rooted or have Linux ported onto it - it would
have been done already for the existing Chromecast.

I don't think Google will support Chromecast Audo as a DLNA renderer as
it is not part of the architecture - audio shoudl be cast by a DLNA
renderer running on an Android system/tv/phone or similar.

As a test last year - I've ported Squeezelite as a Chrome Native Client
(i.e. runs natively under Chrome) which can then cast audio easily but
Chrome only supports 48/44.1 16bit.

wrt Chromecast capabilities - IIRC Google said in a recent PR they hoped
to do synced audio from multiple chromecasts next year.

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?

2015-10-09 Thread CommanderROR

I believe the most realistic route would not be to modify the
Chromecast, but to teach LMS (or rather a LMS Plugin) the Cast Protocol.
Pretty much like BubbleUpnp that can send data to pretty much
everything, including Chromecast devices. Problem is, that's on Android,
no idea how "open" the Cast protocol is, and whether it can be applied
in a useful form from LMS...

The Chrome browser can also cast and that is why I tested porting a
Squeezelite player as a Chrome Native native client (i.e. it runs within
a Chrome web page tab and same cleint runs on Windows, OSX and Linux -
also on Chromebook) - the downside was that the Chrome Audio is limited
to 44.1/48.

Google "cast" docs can be found here but they are mainly centered around
sending audio to a Google Chromecast.
https://developers.google.com/cast/docs/reference/

Personally I think Chromecast Audio is dead end for LMS - too much
reverse engineering is needed to get a basic solution which can be
undone at a stroke by Google. A Pi packaged with a DAC running
PicoPlayer is a more maintainable long term solution but it is not a
ready neat package for non technical end users.

@bpa

You're probably right, I saw a project on Github that is apparently
working on Protocol V2, but not sure how stable or useful that is. I
thought for a moment, that BubbleUpnp Server might help, but I'm not
entirely sure how it works, and whether it would serve this purpose at
all.

Well anyway, it can't hurt to look into it, if it turns out to be
impossible (which is likely), then so be it... ;)

The charm of Chromecast is, that you could use it for LMS and also with
various streaming apps on Chrome/Android/iOS. 2in1 basically... :D

Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?

2015-10-09 Thread markbrauer

I'm new to this "casting" stuff as of yesterday but I'm learning fast.

As I reported earlier, I have experimented running cast capable apps,
Spotify and LocalCast, with good success. But then I noticed that my
Android phone has an overall casting control. I turned it on and the
cast icon appears in the notification area at the top of the screen.
Figuring I had nothing to loose I fired up Squeeze Player and
Orangesqueeze, selected my phone as the player, and sure enough my LMS
library is available for casting and control. Just like a "real"
Squeezebox. And the Triode Spotify app works too.

It seems that the music is actually being cast from the Squeeze Player
app on the phone and not from LMS running on my network. I close
OrangeSqueeze and the music continues. I turn off Squeeze Player and the
music stops. Turn it back on and it starts again. If I lose WiFi on the
phone the music stops. So it's definitely being channeled through the
phone. With the LocalCast app, once you start the stream from the phone
you can shut down the app, leave WiFi coverage, or shut the phone off
and the music keeps streaming from the network server.

I have no idea how routing the data through the phone affects the bit
rate delivered to the DAC . Those with knowledge of the inner workings
of the Squeezebox system may be able to shed light on this. All I can
say is that playing music this way, the sound quality of the digital-out
of the Chromecast seems on par with the digital-out of the Touch.

My phone is a Nexus 5 that just updated to Android 6. I installed the
Google Cast app to set up the Chromecast and I suspect that is where the
phone's seemingly innate casting ability came from. Not sure if all
Androids have this capability.

I still intend to experiment with squeeze2upnp to get the Chromecast to
be even more like a "real" Squeezebox.
