I hate to admit, its not just your kids. I've taken to playing on Echo
for convenience instead of my good system. Siri and Google just SUUUCK
but Alexa has magic juju beans somewhere because it just works. I'm
listening to more music in my kitchen now on an Echo Show because we can
change genres in 2nds from across the room and the sound isn't...bad.

Re: [slim] New Logitech Squeezebox 2020 Edition

2020-01-06 Thread dmcdayton

I mean, Squeezebox is a unicorn. Most electronics have a product life
cycle of 3-5 years, at best. These things are still providing value and
doing things no other devices can do (at least not as easily/elegantly)
10 years down the road. For the life of me I can't understand why
Logitech would buy, then bury, SlimDevices. I would love to know what
the founders think about it. What a waste.

I would bet good money that Amazon will simply yawn, roll over and put a
digital out on their Echo Show devices next year with bit perfect
streaming and half these services will be rolling up their tent in 3
years. Its sad, there is a real need for a Swiss Army knife of streamers
like SB to keep the streaming playing field even.

RIP Squeezebox. RIP.

Agree with your sentiment. I haven't found anything that is better all
around than the SB Radios. Logitech was way ahead of Sonos, and then
just stepped aside and gave Sonos *YEARS* to attempt to catch up. Give
me a stereo radio with Alexa built in or another voice control option,
and I'd upgrade every Radio in my house. My kids can't be bothered to
use radio controls -- they'll walk downstairs to the tiniest speaker in
our house and ask Alexa to play a song.

I'd add that it should have an integrated LMS server installed with
great defaults because that kind of target audience today would probably
be for households that own ONE squeezebox, as opposed to me with my...
10 or so...

Here's my wishlist for the new year:

- Wish Michael and the contributors here all the best. I don't expect
any profound reversal from Logitech, but I would be happy to be
surprised.
- Hope the SB community continues to grow in new places -- I've recently
gotten into home automation using hass.io -- squeezeboxes work fantastic
in this, and I bet a lot of home automation nuts who are putting
raspberry pis in every room for bluetooth presence detection would be
interested in being able to send audio messages to any room via
squeezebox hassio integration -- there's probably a growing demand for a
raspberry pi distro build customized for home automation... (maybe when
I finish all those other projects... I'll think about this)
- Wish there was a squeezepad app for my iPhone - I have all the others,
but I just really like squeezepad on my ipad as a control surface
- Wish we had a working SiriusXM app
- Wish there were more SB Radio-like hardware options for PiCorePlayer
that had knobs and buttons so I wouldn't have to design and build my own

[slim] New Logitech Squeezebox 2020 Edition

2020-01-06 Thread dmcdayton

I heard a rumor that Logitech product management has now recognized
that:
-In 2020, 80% of the music business will be streaming content
-That their SlimDevices Squeezebox line may have been 10 years ahead of
its time.
-That there still isn't a product on the market that streams as easy or
as well as the original SB3 Classic and Squeezebox Touch, even 10 years
later.
-That even now, years past purchase, they have a large, loyal, dedicated
fan base with a hunger for a new product.
-That the vast majority of stereo owners would love to move to streaming
but don't need a new receiver or amp, just something to deliver the
music.

I also heard they are contemplating a simple update to Squeezebox Touch
2020:
-Same physical design with upgraded DAC, WIFI and Screen
-Build a focus on streaming first and easy setup, with full integration
of Apple Music, Google Play, Spotify, Qobuz, Tidal, Amazon
Music/HD/Ultra HD and others through mysqueezebox.com
-Full support for all streaming formats, bitrates and resolutions
-Bitperfect output via digital outs up to 24/192 for those with external
DACs.
-Robust integration with Alexa, Siri and Google assistants
-Updated Optional LMS with Roon like features for hard core audio folks
managing large local libraries

That's what I heard anyway. And by heard, I mean, that's what I day
dreamed about this afternoon while looking at CES 2020 highlights.

Come on Logitech, get back in the game. You could still be the standard
bearer of the streaming age.

Last I knew, the Chromecast bridge was not capable of synchronizing with
other players. If that's still true, it could be a strike against that
option. But if synchronizing players is not important it should be
perfectly satisfactory.

Can't say I have seen those issues but I hard wire all devices like this
(WiFi for something fixed is just a pain) so that may mean I have not
seen the network issues.

Menus popping up? Nope, only the usual poorly setup HDMI CEC stuff on
TV's casing issues, but that is common to any amp that tries to support
it. I just turn it off. No odd menus jumping up. To be honest, once you
have it setup I suspect you will just turn off most of the OSD stuff in
day to day use ;).

Also use a Harmony setup so I may not be your most common user but I
have been very happy with it for the ££'s.

You might want to check if the user running LMS has write permissions on
the NAS share mounted on your odroid.
If yes, there's the possibility to put malicious files on it to attack

Thank you all for your quick, high-quality replies :)

Nothing seems to have been done with the plugins or anything else, the
only thing was that the music started by itself.

I have already set up an OpenVPN setup through which I can from e.g. my
mobile phone access LMS through its home network local IP address.

However, I don't understand how to get that to work without having port
forwarding set up on the router. If I simply type the LMS server's IP
address into a web browser address bar, e.g 192.168.1.100, nothing shows
up. I need to have the port forwarding rule set up on the router for LMS
to show up, and to type 192.168.1.100:9000 to get into LMS. Or have I
misunderstood something here ?

I've read all the instructions/warnings regarding remote access etc.

I just don't understand how I can get LMS to show up in a browser
without having port forwarded in the router. If I delete the port
forwardings now, and am on my home network, how would I access LMS ?
Because simply typing the internal IP address to the machine LMS is on
does not take me to LMS unless I have port forwards set up ?

Thank you again :)

Appreciate this is an old'ish post but the Sony STR-DN1080 is fine as a
DLNA player or renderer. Used both with LMS quite a bit in the past.
It's also got ChromeCast built in so works well with the great

Do make sure you have the latest firmware loaded on the AMP if you plan
to use ChromeCast via Ethernet as it had a few gremlins in older
versions but stabilised nicely.

What Paul said.

Really check the 3rd party plugin. I know that some install my
ImageViewer top basically expose all your file system through LMS,
giving "visitors" access to all your photos etc. Check all installed 3rd
party plugins and make sure you really enabled them. Ask here if in doubt.

A plugin installed by an attacker could do anything the user running LMS
is allowed to do. That's why LMS refuses to be run as root by default.

Re: [slim] Hacked! What can the hacker do ?

2020-01-06 Thread bpa

LMS runs as a normal program - Perl is an interpreted language which
means code can be changed dynamically so very hard to protect once
accessed.

As Paul has mentioned custom plugins are one way but there are many
other ways (e.g. "play" an OPML URL with a custom parser) depending on
the skill of the hacker) .

Many methods can be used to "infect" the LMS host system and then use it
as a backdoor to access any system on your network which can then be
modified/destroyed, monitor personal use or even use your systems to

Re: [slim] Hacked! What can the hacker do ?

2020-01-06 Thread Paul Webster

I think that so far no-one has reported anything happening outside of
LMS.
However, if someone was being really malicious they could install a
custom plug in and then that plug in could do anything.
This is why there is a big warning telling people not to do port
forwarding to LMS.

[slim] Hacked! What can the hacker do ?

2020-01-06 Thread echable

5am last night my LMS on an Odroid XU4 started playback, I assume it was
because a hacker through port forwarding hacking has accessed my LMS.

The LMS's music source is an NFS mounted drive on a Synology NAS.

No files appear to have been deleted or anything on the NAS. I have shut
down and not yet restarted the XU4.

What can a hacker do through LMS ? Can they only do LMS operations, e.g.
starting playback, messing with plugins or whatever ?

Or, if LMS is hacked, can they gain access and do damage to the system
LMS is on, or on the NAS system the mounted music source drive is on ?

Would really like someone competent to clarify this for me. If the
security vulnerabilities that allow LMS to be relatively easily hacked
are simply limited to messing around with the LMS installation and
services itself, I'm not too worried. Or can a hacker through LMS do
broader damage to one's network ? Delete files for example ?

I hope my question is clear, would very much appreciate help with this
question. Thank you very much! :)
