I've done that many times (including yesterday) ... surprisingly little
interest.

The Sonos forum and community is a strange and often unwelcoming
phenomenon! There is a substantial number of 'fanboys' who will attack
anyone who has even constructive criticism to offer. A gentle hint I
made yesterday about 'other ways to use Sonos devices' was promptly put
down as 'nonsense' by one of these characters.

In the current threads about the 'legacy' issue I am quite amazed by the
amount of $$$ some people have spent on their systems - quite a number
are threatening to sell their equipment and move off to other equally
overpriced and proprietary closed systems as a solution.

The music is the same but the delivery mechanism for Internet-accessible
music has been changing ... e.g. more https, higher bit rate services,
other protocols (eg hls).
LMS is able to hide much of that for our devices but Sonos works in a
different way.
I could believe that their old devices are somewhere near the limit of
their capability but my guess is that it is becoming hard for them to
write software that works across the entire range (where old kit has
different chips) plus the extra time it takes to test everything against
the full set of hardware increases their costs.

Their communication of this on top of the bricking of kit to get a
discount on upgrade does seem very poor.

I don't think so. Spotty doesn't touch the system's audio output. If you

[slim] Spotty errors on desktop / RDP?

2020-01-22 Thread FredFredrickson

I use RDP a lot on the squeezebox server. Every time I log in there's a
dozen or so errors on my screen related to spotty. Music seems to play
just fine, so if something is crashing it appears to relaunch just fine
with no ill effects. I usually just click "ok" through all the errors
and ignore them.

Any ideas? Does it have anything to do with redirected audio because of
RDP?

Either way, thanks so much for keeping spotty up to date. I use it
daily.

My library is a mix of CD rips and Flacs made from Vinyl with the odd
download. I like to have complete artist collections.

I listen most days for 7+ hours but have two forms of listening.
During the day I usually start off choosing an album from New Music and
then let LastMix/DSTM do its stuff. This is sometimes background music
and sometimes I listen seriously.
During the evening my listening is totally serious and I generally

Thanks. No, I confess, I'm like the mouse who suggests tying a bell to
the cat in an old fable. I'm willing to suggest action, but not to
undertake it myself. I think you understand how Logitech operates better
than anyone else, so if you are confident that there will be enough
advance warning of a shutdown, I accept that.

I do want to emphasize that I am NOT as concerned about technical issues
as with social and informational aspects. If we should find one morning
that mysqueezebox.com has been shut down and the slimdevices sites are
no longer accessible, it is true that LMS installations will still work
and all services that do not depend on msb.com will continue to work.
But the community of users may be scattered and crucial information may
be lost.

Note that I say these things "may" happen, not that they certainly will
happen.

Thanks for that. I should have thought of the internet archive. That may
be a valuable resource. However, so far my attempts to access any
content there have failed. I'm probably doing something wrong, but I
wonder if it's working for anyone else.

I do not intend to lose any sleep over this, but I hope we are not
setting ourselves up to be blindsided.

I have been using a Squeezebox Touch for 8 years and have been hearing
fears of it becoming obsolete for many years. I figured I would have had
to replace it by now due to lack of support. But now I am enjoying it
more than I ever have due to new plugins that continue to appear from
developers keeping the LMS updated to current trends.
I especially like the Qobuz and Radio Paradise plugins developed by

Agree with the assessment bpa made about worrying later and enjoying the

Re: [slim] Tidal missing search results + more

2020-01-22 Thread Michael Herger

I wrote Tidal to ask that they provide updated APIs to Logitech, here's
what they said (ie. nothing):

...

We simply provide an API access and the content so that you are able to
stream.

We do not have control of how Logitech uses the API and content.

Which doesn't provider an answer to your question, does it? Of course
they can't tell what we're doing with what they provide. But they didn't
say whether they could provide updated information.

Unfortunately my recent communication with them has gone silent. Despite
asking back for some clarification on the rate limiting question I
haven't received any response any more in two weeks :-(.

This topic appears every few years - people agonise over "what if" and
often nothing stops.
People worried that players would die - then Pi's appeared and now also
SqueezeAMP
People worried about no new plugins/development as many "veteran"
developers withdrew - new guys stepped up.

It is likely some warning will be given so worry then and enjoy music
now.

Nicely put - thanks bpa!

Chances are any solution you think of today will be out of date if

individuals or communities - so something commercial would be
necessary.

People worried that players would die - then Pi's appeared and now also
SqueezeAMP
People worried about no new plugins/development as many "veteran"
developers withdrew - new guys stepped up.

It is likely some warning will be given so worry then and enjoy music
now.

Re: [slim] IMPORTANT: Stop forwarding your LMS ports to the internet!

2020-01-22 Thread echable

Can confirm this is a real issue - I ignored the warnings because I
couldn't find any decent instructions on how to set up a VPN tunnel (and
not knowledgeable about the difference between a commercial VPN
provider, such as www.privateinternetaccess.com, which was the only type
of VPN I knew about, and confused it with the type of VPN server you
need for LMS, on your router for example, I am now using an Asus router
with Merlin firmware VPN server, that you need to set up to access LMS
remotely and securely). Setting up the VPN server takes five clicks on
the router and then you download the OpenVPN Connect Android app on the
remote device you wish to use - export an .ovpn configuration file from
your router interface - import this into the Android device - and you're
done. When I had port forwarding on I got hacked after about a month -
woke up at 5am to the sounds of some sweet Cuban music :) - shut down
everything - set up the VPN approach next day.
