Like I said in a previous post, I sometimes use ping -a to see what an
IP address is used for, I do not remember them all.

But let's drop the why, I have found the solution how to.

You say "You can have more than one name mapped to a given IP address
in DNS" but that is not the case here.
I have multiple devices and all devices have different IP addresses,
but by default they use the same hostname, thus, only the last switched
on device as a reverse-lookup entry.

But, my simple way of thinking, I use the latest SBS software which is
aware of SB3 and SB Radio, gives me an option with both devices and
this option does not work the same on SB3 and SB Radio, I find that
odd.

Did that, in fact, most devices in my LAN have a reservation, but the
DHCP server is set to register DHCP hosts in DNS (because of many
devices).

First of all, it's not just a pretty looking table, it's a correct
table.
If all SB devices register themselves with the same name, then my
reverse lookup table is incomplete, because more devies with the same
name can only be registered once in the reverse lookup table.

Second, if this is of no concern, then why does it work with the SB3
and not a newer device ?

Well, with many IP addresses in my LAN, ping -a x.x.x.x gives me a
hostname so I know what certain IP addresses are used for (I do not
remember them all).
But what I mean is that I find it odd that I can change the hostname on
the SBS website for SB3 devices and not for SB Radio devices, for DNS
registration.

When I remove the DNS entries, change the DHCP reservation for my SB3,
option 12, hostname sb3, reboot the SB3, it registers itself as
squeezebox.mydomain.local.
So that doesn't work.

When I change SB3's name in the SBS webinterface into SB3, the
squeezebox registers itself as sb3.mydomain.local.
This works, yes, but not for the Squeebox Radio.

Not blaming the SB3, but I am blaming the SB Radio.

In SBS and in mysqueezebox.com both player have different names, still
they both register in DNS as squeezebox.mydomain.local.

Yes it does.
The hostname is the first bit of a DNS entry.
hostname.domain.extension.

Example :
An Active Directory environment with domain name mydomain.local.
A computer is named pc1.
That computer will register itself in DNS with it's hostname pc1 and
will then be known as pc1.mydomain.local.

My DNS server is a Windows 2003 machine running Microsoft DNS service.

[slim] How do I define the hostname ?

2011-04-04 Thread ASS-Ware

I have a Squeezebox Classic v3 and a Squeezebox Radio, both get their IP
address from my local DHCP server and register themselves in my local
DNS server, but they both register themselves with
squeezebox.mydomain.local.
How do I change the hostname they use to register in DNS ?

The Squeezebox Classic has the name Squeezebox, the Squeezebox Radio
had the name SqueezeboxRadio, so it looks like it does not use it's
name as set in the web interface.

We hope you are enjoying your Squeezebox or Transporter. At Logitech,
our first priority is you — our customer. We want to make sure your

Take the survey now!

Thank you. We look forward to hearing from you.

Re: [slim] squeezebox hostname via dhcp?

2008-08-31 Thread ASS-Ware

I have done some further testing and I have come to a conclusion.
Here is what I have :
Squeezebox 3
SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 11206 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252
Perl Version: 5.8.8 MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
MySQL Version: 5.0.22-community-nt
DNS and DHCP run on Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2

I have enabled the host option on the DHCP reservation for the MAC
address of the squeezebox and have set the hostname to "Squeezebox".
I have enabled the property "Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records
for DHCP clients that do not request updates (for example, clients
running Windows NT 4.0)".
I have set the name of the squeezebox to MySlimDevice in SlimServer.

I have run through the configuration on the network settings again, the
squeezebox asks for an IP address and the DHCP server registers the
Squeezebox in DNS with the hostname myslimdevice.

So it is the name you give your squeezebox in the SlimServer software.
Well, at least in my case it is.

Hope this helps.

I guess I was wrong, I have looked a bit further and I think I know
what you mean now.
In the options of a scope or reservation you can set the hostname.
This may be usefull for reservations only I think, as the same hostname
for a whole scope doesn't sound workable to me ...

Yes, but that is not the same as giving out a hostname.
If, for instance, we are talking about Windows Server 2003 DHCP and
DNS, then DHCP can update DNS with the hostname of the device and the
IP data, but the device needs to have a hostname then ;-)

Works as well, edited the file and it displays the right name in the

Excuse me for my English ... :-(

Btw.
I have removed http://www.garnierstreamingmedia.com/asx/skyradio.asp
and added mms://81.173.4.30/Skyradio, because
http://www.garnierstreamingmedia.com/asx/skyradio.asp initially starts
with mms://81.173.1.203/skyradio/spots/HCSALSAVERS3.mp3 and
mms://81.173.4.30/Skyradio is the second option, but
mms://81.173.1.203/skyradio/spots/HCSALSAVERS3.mp3 is interrupted very
often.

It works, I am happy, my girlfriend is happy and I thank you again.

It works perfectly.
I have added it to my favourites too, but there I see the mms:// link,
will it be possible to change that into another text ?

I have downloaded the MyPicks-0.6-6.5.zip, placed the contents in the
\Program Files\SlimServer\server\Plugins folder and restarted
slimserver sofwtare.
Now I see an extra option in the webpage of slimservers, called "My
Picks".
When I click in that, I have a few buttons, so what do I do from here ?

Here's what I did.

- Start internet explorer and go to http://localhost:9000/
- Clicked on Tune In URL
- Paste "http://www.garnierstreamingmedia.com/asx/skyradio.asp";
- Click Tune In
- Walked to my squeezebox
- Pressed play and it started to play ... for 5 seconds, then it
reboots and keeps rebooting after playing 5 seconds when I press play.

Maybe because people that know what they are doing, setting wpa2 for

[slim] In random, my SB3 plays only a few songs

2007-02-24 Thread ASS-Ware

Hi All,

My girlfriend likes random (as in music hehehehe).
She selects an album (with the remote) and presses play, song 1
starts.
Then she selects other albums and presses +.
After selecting the albums, she presses the shuffle until it says
"Shuffle by song".
When I look at the SB interface with my PC, I see that the list is
shuffeled.
After about 5-10 songs, the SB stops playing as if it's at the end of
the list.
Why is this ?

Device is SB3, SlimServer Version: 6.5.0 - 9916 - Windows XP - EN -
cp1252, Perl Version: 5.8.7 MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
MySQL Version: 5.0.22-community-nt, Player Firmware Version: 64.

They sit in cars, they hack wifi networks and download illegal stuff
like child pornography.
And it's downloaded from your internet connection, so you are the one
they come to once it's discovered.

The thing is, once somebody hacks your wifi, that person is in your
network and can try to access all computers in your network, and even
worse, use your internet connection for attacks to other networks on
the web and you are the one to blame if it's discovered as they use
your connection.
And what about somebody hacking your wifi and thus being part of your
network and then download child pornography ?
If discovered, they come to your door !!!
That happened not far from my village.

It's got nothing to do with an internet connection, it's the wifi
connection to your personal network, which can be hacked and then they
can access your computer(s).
Internet or no internet is not important.
